    Hello!

I'm compiling a list of the people going to the CT show on the 27th
at the El-N-Gee. If you're going, send me your address, and I'll send you
details of any get togethers that happen before the show.
I went over my disc quota here at school, so a few of the addresses
I had got deleted. If you haven't gotten anything from me in a while and
you think you sent me your address before, e-mail me again just to be sure.
    Sorry about all that. :)

Once again: if you're going to the DT show on the 27th at the
El-N-Gee, e-mail me and I keep you all up to date on everything. And I
won't charge you anything! Imagine that. :)

Referring to recent posts (too lazy to look up who and when).

I, too, love the harmonies in ACOS...sends shivers down the old spine. I
still wish, though, that JP and MP would pitch in...it' not like they are
    busy doing anything else<G>

The only thing a rythmn guitarist with DT could do is stand around and spank
the monkey, choke his chicken, etc. and then get down on his knees and
worship Petrucci.. The keyboards more than just provide fill...they add
textures etc. not possible with just another guitar, no matter who is playing
    it.

As far as James LaBrie/ insulting audiences, the fucking idiot in the Japan
Pay Per View video was incoherent, (at least I couldn't understand him)...but
I think that James should have insulted him better in Japanese. Learn the
    language LaBrie...call 1-800-ABCDEFG.

To those lucky ones that are going to see DT in Late December.....be sure to
let us know about how the MIX sounded. Although the band was stellar here in
Portland, the PA mix blew chunks. I hope they have someone new to work the
soundboard. You guys be sure to buy and use DAT recorders and get the whole
show on tape...then send me free copies.

Today's informative as usual post from Mike Bahr was clever.. but not clever
enough to get past me. Mike, you claim that the Hairball credit on Acoustic
Dreams was in reference to someone who you know. First of all who the hell
else would live in Chandler AZ?
Second of all who would be such a stupid asshole as to choose Hairball as a
    name??

Should put 'that' to rest........Mike Portnoy...I mean Bahr.

HAIRBALL...so you said that DT used compression on ACOS for the acoustic
    portions.....sorry to burst your big-bubble-bubba-buddy-boy-but-being a
guitarist I can assure you that JP is playing a normal, full-sized
guitar....do you think we are Fucking Idiots or something??

    BAFU VAI lives.

I say I snagged another one, nope... make that two. What, is this
the third time this month? This is getting boring, I'd better stop
for a year or so. Sorry, whenever I sit down to type, I feel like
Bafu Vai is sitting on my right shoulder and there's the bear on
my left. (Anyone seen that skit on Conan? It's got to be the best
one they've ever come up with.)

Truthfully, though, perhaps the one component of a band that *can*
be unnecessary are the vocals. I remember sitting in with my friend
a few years back while he was mixing some tracks for his band
(Masquerade, a "Tesla ripoff," as he termed them, based around
Modesto) and I thought they sounded quite good before he started
    mixing the vox in.

Could someone PLEASE tell me where I can get a copy of the full version
of O Holy Night with James in the studio? I know there is a studio
version with Charlie and there is the version with just James and
John on guitar (this is on AD) but I have a tape of a radio show
and they play about 30 seconds of a studio version with James singing.
    It sounds incredible!!!

Please let me know if you have this on tape. I have a massive bootlist
if you wanna trade for a copy of it.

Since U.S. eMpTyV doesn't want to show too many rock videos anymore, does anyone out there think that we should ask if the record label could offer the videos on a VHS tape and maybe LaserDisc to the people who buy the album? Maybe they could include a reply card in the CD for us to return for a tape of the videos? Of course, the video won't be free, but maybe this way those of us in the US can see some videos of DT.

Either that or they could include on of those CD+ discs with digitized videos on a CD in Quicktime, AVI, or MPEG format so we could watch them on a PC/Mac and still listen to the music on the DT CD in a regular CD player. That would cut down on the amount of music on a disc if it only came with 1 CD. If they included 2 CDs (one with just the songs and the other with the videos), that would be better. They could make it a limited edition of 20,000 copies or even more if they wanted to.

    Just an idea...... rq

A long-winded reply to several people:

Zach: WHAT!?!?!? No keys in Dream Theater? Are you nuts? God, why don't we ditch Steve Howe from Yes? They can make it fine without him! Jeez, you must be a guitarist! Keys provide the perfect foil to JP's over-the-top playing, they keep him from going totally overboard. Dream Theater without keys just wouldn't be right.

To whomever suggested Trevor Rabin as 6th man of DT: I like the idea, no not only for what he would add as a guitarist, songwriter, and singer, but as a keyboardist as well. As you may know, Trevor had a significant hand in the keyboard parts of the Yes albums that he worked on, playing all of the non-organ stuff on "Talk". Check the opening piano riff on the Silent Spring section of Endless Dream, talk about some serious chops. His guitar style would be a d decent compliment to JP's, can you imagine them trading fours? His songwriting would, IMHO, add a significant new aspect to DT's sound, and would give them perhaps the necessary hit without dragging them into the Yes/Genesis neo-prog pop sellout crap. He could also add tremendous harmonies and leads to James' singing, though I don't hear their voices blending too well. The only fault is obviously ego. Trevor was the dominating force behind 80's Yes, even with Chris Squire and Jon Anderson in the group, and with JP being the apparent force behind DT, I think there would be a serious ego clash. And, when the 8 piece version of Yes did the Union tour, Trevor absolutely drowned out Steve Howe, a move that truly displayed what an arrogant fuck Trevor is. Steve Howe has far more credibility and stature as a guitar player and songwriter than Trevor has, So again, a great idea, but think it over. Another suggestion might be Shawn Lane, whose solo album released a few years ago on Shrapnel records displays what a true talent he is, on guitar, keyboards, and other stuff.

As for the new Jammer who made the idiotic move of trying to reignite the favorite band flame, if he put Blind Melon and Hole as two of his top five, it has to be a joke. After what happened the last time someone posted on BM, good Lord. I hope that dude is wearing fire proof clothing, because he is about to get flamed big time. "Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do," some Bible passage, but don't start flaming me for making a Christian reference, I was simply making a point.

One problem: Classic rock is not as bad as you make it out to be. I actually like Van Halen, Aerosmith, and Boston. Don't knock classic rock. Some Genesis is actually classified as classic rock, as well as Led Zeplin, and Deep Purple, both of which DT has covered.

And as to Trevor Raben going into DT, I don't know if that would work, because Raben wants to be Mr. front man. He'd want to sing, and do lead work. I don't think DT has the room for that. Let Raben start his own band and do his thing. I like Raben, but I saw an interview with him where he openly admitted that he is used to being the lead singer and that having to take a back seat to John Anderson was a tough pill to take, (maybe that's why he left Yes?) If he had to take a backseat to James vocally and JP guitarwise? Don't think that'll happen.

other brillint topics dt can write about for their upcoming album: a) a tune about how keyboardists suck and they wish they can do without derek (btw, not only am i a guitarist, i'm a pianist as well, but found it funny enough to mention)

    b) a bass solo, so jm can show off his new bass sound, ala bootsy collins.

    c) a song about what jp is naming is twins (i still go with miracle and sleeper)

    d) a recording of james' vocal warmups to prove that he can sing better than any 80s vocalists, including michael jackson.

    e) a song featuring marty friedman, with jp doing the rhythm

    f) a song to explain why they had "steel rein" open for them at the malibu in june (i hope they had GOOD reasons)

    g) mp's drum clinics!!

    h) a song dedicated to the most infamous ytsejammer of them all, bafuckin vaidiot!! (no, bafu, i'm not digging on you, seriously; just couldn't help it)

Of course DT should "funk out" if they so choose. If they have the ability to do funk with a metal bent then by all means let them push the envelope of their mix. Just remember, that on a world tour it's James and the band who are the foreigners . . . NOT the audience.

    Oh, Mike Bahr...!

I think I'll send you a copy of the updated Subconscious liner notes, too, as I will do to the ones who requested one the last days. ;-)

The lyrics of "Don't Look Past Me" are by Kevin Moore, not John Petrucci! This is 100% confirmed. Don't believe everything Mike Bahr writes, believe me ;-))

    HEY!

Where's your curiosity? No questions for a little Ytsecon-interview?

    Well...

    Mr Who wrote:

Oh, the Ytsejam list wants to replace the frontman once again. No flames intended! You are right, there are similarities, but it sounds like we are searching for yet another new vocalist. James LaBrie is an excellent singer, why do you all criticise him that much during the last Jams?

To sum up all posts about DT vocalists of the last Jams:

    a) They should do more harmonies in studio. b) They should do harmonies live at all. c) Charlie Dominici is absolute crap, he can't sing at all. d) Though James LaBrie is a lot better than Charlie Dominici, many people don't like DT because they think he sounds like 80s-metal-singers. e) He sounds generally too much like a metal singer. f) I don't like his attitude. g) I don't like a frontman who looks like Fabio...

They do a lot of harmonies in studio and they are doing fine. I agree they should try to support James live with some of these harmonies, but it's not as if the lack of harmonies would ruin the whole song or even show.

Charlie Dominici is a typical 80s-prog-singer, and since WDADU is classical 80s-prog he fits perfectly. Listen to early Fates Warning, then you know what I'm thinking of when I say 80s-prog. I'm glad they kicked Dominici after this album, they grew out of this 80s-prog category with IAW.

BTW, FW's John Arch had an audition with DT, remember? He doesn't sound like an 80s metal singer. Maybe he'd be a better choice for DT, so no one could say the singer sounds too much that way? If they would had taken him, then 95% of us wouldn't be on this list and the ones now complaining about 80s-metal-James would say "what a crappy prog singer!" instead.

YES! You're so absolutely right, I HAD to quote this!

To the ones who don't like James's raw voice: Remember that DT is still a prog-METAL band. If you don't like this, better keep on listening to Rush. Listen to The Mirror. It works only with a raw, angry voice. I love to hear someone with a classical trained voice sing that way. There are many vocalist who just scream and there are many who just sing clearly. It's a LOT more difficult to sing one moment with a really raw voice and in the next with a soft, smooth one. I'm glad James put more variety into his voice this way. I don't think many other vocalists could do that.

    Back again to Mr Who:

    >time", I feel the balance is just right. In fact, I feel that on "Awake" >the vocals dominate far too much when they appear. "Dont tell me you >wanted me, dont tell me you thought of me...." However I would like to

Listen to Lie and The Mirror once more. It's the same as for maybe Another Day, the vocals are very important, so they are automatically dominant, but on The Mirror/Lie the voice is very raw, and, last but not least, the production is a lot more lively.

    >go over the top and his vocals tend to dominate the song. "Voices" Is my >prime example of this. In songs like "Learning to live" or "Take the

Voices... umm... look at the song title ;-)

I think the voice on IAW (overproduced, not a bit lively) and especially on ACOS (flat and too mixed down) could be even a lot more dominant ;-) Taste differs...

Ok, attitude. He sometimes appears arrogant on stage because he takes the music very seriously. That's absolutely ok since he doesn't become a pathetic asshole like eg Axl Rose.

    Hi there,

Just few words to invite you to listen to the fantastic album of VANDEN PLAS, a band from Germany. "Color temple" is very impressive, in a style that mix metal, progressive, and FM. Some songs sound like DT or QUEENSRYCHE and their epic songs (like "Soul survive" or "When the wind blows") are simply astonishing.

I saw them live yesterday, and it kicked ass. Undoubtely the best show I have seen recently, since the last European DT Tour. Moreover, they are die hard DT fans, but don't try to copy them.

I listen to a lot of prog metal bands, and I would put VANDEN PLAS just after DT, before other excellents bands like IVANOHE or SHADOW GALLERY. Taste VANDEN PLAS, you won't be disappointed.

Still looking for DT traders, especially in Europe; but other traders are welcome, even if it is more difficult for the videos, in so far as we don't share the same standard.

The new Tori Amos (= a masterpiece) album is planned for January 22nd, with a single one month before. A European tour will follow (about 20 dates in UK in february/march). Bye,

Stephane Auzilleau Your Majesty, French Fan Club of DT

Yes, Sammy did play rhythm guitar on the Live W/O A Net tour. I also remember hearing about Eddie having to do some teaching for Sammy to get all the chords and solo patterns. LATER-
