A cool ass X-mas CD to check out would be, WINTER SOLISTICE 2, and ENYA's
version of Silent Night. Both are perfect for getting into that ever so
popular mood.

A little snipet of info: I work at a fast-food joint, and the day before
Thanksgiving I brought my CD player to work with some of my favs. About
20 minute before closing I popped in ACOS. This man around 27-30 years
old came up and asked if this was our "normal" music. I said no it was
my personal CD. He said that "we" should play more music like it, it
makes people feel good. Just though I'd share that.

When I saw "Road to the Promised Land" I was dumbfounded. It was by far
the best concert that I've seen, except for the fact that their really
weren't that many RYCHE fans their. They were standing around
complaining about this and that, but that's O.K. w/ me it gave me a
chance to get to the front!! Many of them told my friends and I to "calm
down!", when you're watching one of you're favorite bands kick much ass
how can you not want to bang your head and pump your fist. Sorry my opinion.

I'm surprised most people on here don't like WDADU as much as the other
DT albums. The first time I heard it I liked it a lot more than when I
heard I&W for the first time. Personally I think this album would be
better than I&W if it had the same production and James singing. Maybe
its cause I like heavier stuff, DT is the lightest group I listen to. Had
DT made any comments whether they like WDADU or anything?

Also is Alex Skolnick (whatever) in Savatage?

Argh. Sorry about that last email -- I sent it out before
I meant to (obviously).

Anyway, I wanted to say that there are many, many covers
of classical pieces out there. Someone already mentioned that
Mastermind does a few classical covers: the "Lone Ranger" part of
the William Tell Overture by Rossini. And Wagner's "Ride of the
Valkyres".
Emerson Lake and Palmer also do quite a few covers, including
"Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky, "Fanfare for the Common
Man" and "Hoedown" by Copland, "Introductory Fanfare" by Mancini,
"Enemy God Dances with the Black Spirits" by Prokofiev, and more...
Emerson Lake and Powell did a cool cover of "Mars the Bringer
of War" by Holst. Anekdoten also did a superb live cover of that piece.
"Cans and Brahams" by Yes (Wakeman); Renaissance has some
classical pieces mixed in with their music, but they tend not to
attribute it. Renaissance has a classical feel to them in general,
so if you like classical covers you may like all of their music.
Anglagard doesn't have any classical covers, but their music
has a lot of classical influence -- it is very complex, uses a lot of
dynamics and variation of rhythms and time signatures. Cool stuff.
There are many more, but those are all I can come up with
off the top of my head...

No, Van Halen hasn't used a rhythm guitarist on the road. Sammy plays guitar
on his solo songs and acoustic on Finish What Ya Started. Other than that,
Eddie is the only guitarist in the band. This is a shame. I saw Sammy twice
as a solo artist; one time in 1978 on the same bill with Van Halen. Sammy
shreds on the guitar. He can hold his own with Eddie just fine. It's too bad
no one gets to hear it anymore.

Have a good one.

I couldn't help but notice the Devin Townsend/James LaBrie argument, and I'd li
ke to throw my two cents in. Now it might sound like I'm arguing against James
, however I'm just defending Devin. It seems that on Awake, James was trying f
or a raspier, or "heavier" vocal sound. I must say that his "heavy" sound leav
es a little to be desired, but he's not known for that. I kinda like his vibra
to-laden high notes, even though this is what makes people call him "80s soundi
ng". Anyone that has heard Vai's "Sex and Religion" knows that Devin has the
range, and also the sensitivity, and definitely the heaviness. But, I don't th
ink that he could entirely be himself in DT, because it seems that he likes to
go completely insane at times, and I can't really see that in DT. But then, wh
y put such a restriction on them. The ideal thing would be for a DT ep with gu
ests, or maybe form a "supergroup" like Temple of the Dog. How's this for the
lineup: MIke Portnoy on drums, Steve Vai and John Petrucci on guitar (holy sev
en-string), Geddy Lee on bass, Jens Johansen on keys, and Devin Townsend on voc
als. I'm probably dreaming, but it would be interesting to hear. Well, I stra
yed from the argument a bit, but I don't think that we should argue about repla
cing band members because someone says they sound like 80s metal. It is this s
ound that got them a platinum album, and legions of devoted fans like us. If a
change is necessary, I'm sure the members of DT would make the right choice in
new personnel. They pretty good with Derek.

I totally agree and you didn't come off too strong. Zach, you must be
joking. Take out the keys and DT is a whole other band! Keys are where it's
at. I love that. And keyboardists can play lines in one hand, chords in the

OTOH, anyone who thinks that someone is a jazz player just because that
person attended one year at the Berklee College of Music doesn't know what
he's talking about.

OK. Sorry to be so harsh Steve. No offense intended but I guess I have to
set the record straight ONCE AGAIN. Berklee College of Music has it's
root's in jazz. But more specifically, in popular music. When Berklee was
started in the '40's, jazz was the popular music. Today Berklee has one of
the most up-to-date music computing facilities and recording studios in the
country (world?). When I was there 5 years ago, the curicullum was very
jazz oriented. As a bassist, I had to be able to walk a line through
changes (at sight), read music and hold my own in a jazz ensemble.
Guitarists would have to play chord solos. Guess how many rock guitarists
had a solo written out _by their teacher_ that they would learn for their
test? All of them? Berklee has tons and tons of rock players. On any day,
you can hear rock music being played. They would have jazz concerts and
rock concerts in the cafeteria. The rock concerts drew the most people and
held the audience the longest. Walk through the halls of the dorms and
you'll hear rock more than anything.

Berklee is a fine school. You CAN learn a lot. Just going isn't any
guarantee that you WILL learn anything, though. Certainly, it is no
guarantee that you will learn any one particular genre, most especially
jazz. Like I said, you're either a jazz player or you're not. Knowing who
Miles Davis is and knowing what a Lydian scale is doesn't make you jazz
player.

Please. This is just a general attitude but do not take someone's
"credentials" at face value. Attending a particular school means nothing.
Esp. for a musician. Wait until you hear him play. If DT did a jazz song
and it was really good then we'd have some basis for rating them as jazz
players. I just can't see Portnoy sitting behind a kit with one small bass
drum, a snare, hi-hat and ride and that's it though :).

Thanks for your time

>along with the tunes! I haven't liked JM's sound at all except for some

Yeah, John, how DARE you expend your musicality at the expense of us
not being able to play your parts. After all, every single one of us are going
to play ALL of yours songs in a band, and it makes it ESPECIALLY hard on us
when you try to do something new like using a seven string guitar. What's
next, more finger-picking or even, no!....., finger-tapping?!?!
Seriously, though, I don't think that the first thing JP thinks of when
writing is 'Gee, I hope everyone can play this song,' otherwise he wouldn't
play things like the quintuplet sixteenths in Erotomania or just about any solo
that he plays. I think that it's rediculous that people don't want him to use
something new. I guess it should upset drummers when Mike buys a new set or a
new piece. IIIIIII don't think so.........am I the only one who thinks this?

To repeat once more, the Dec. 27 show at the El 'n Gee is SOLD OUT.
Hope to see you guys there! Later!

Hey! I resemble that remark! Accents are in the ear of the beholder anyhow.

I pronounce it "Yit-see-jam" but I don't care to get thread started again,
so just ignore everything I just said...

Here are my ideas for the new album: As far as harmonies go, I LOVE 'EM! My favorite vocal part probably on any DT album is from "Innocence" off ACOS-you know, "Innocence carressing me..." I'd like to see more of that. A Derek song? I really don't like him at all, and will he even be in the band when the new album is recorded? Those of you who saw the HBB about a year ago with James and Mike recall that he was just replacing Kevin temporarily until they find the time to look for right man for the job. And another member? NO WAY! The band is great with 5. later--------------Brian

As to what John Kotzian said about flooding the MTV mailbox with letters, LET'S DO IT! Just set the date and make a list of people who will send the letters (put me down as #1!) I mean, I don't want prog to get overly commercialized, but right now MTV SUCKS! Look at the nominees for the best Metal/Hard Rock song this year: Green Day, Meat Puppets, and White Zombie (for More Human Than Human, a song alll the hip-hop people in my school know-after all, its been on The Grind). Come On. Lets let them know we're out there! later-------------------Brian

Hey all,

I'm new to this list and its my firsr post as well. Some of you might know me from the megadeth mailing list as well or even from the megadiner(ddv.com 6969) I've been a Dream Theater fan for a while now, always loved that progressive side to music but I am an even bigger fan of John Myung's bass playing. Yes, i play bass. Can anyone tell me what kind of basses Myung uses. I know his amp, which is a beautiful peice of work btw and its too bad his bass is so damn low in the mix, I swear I was listening to Judas Priest cd.

Dream Theatre has one thing going for them, they don't add layers and layers of tracks onto their cd's. What you hear on the cd is what you get, its quite nice to hear that.

Also, I just picked up Fates Warning "No Exit" and It totally kicks ass. That has to be one of the heaviest and most progressive cd's I have ever heard. I love the epic style song, you can't beat those. It's right up there with Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner and then again, its up there with any Iron Maiden song. I should mention that I am a BIG Iron Maiden fan, steve harris is also one of my biggest influences and its one of John Myungs as well. Are there any bass tab for DT songs? or at the lines to hard to write out. Can anyone tell me anything about Joe Dibaise and the amazing drummer that is playing on the Exit cd. I have yet to check out Chasing time. I also saw the new video for Fates Warning, too bad I can't remember what its called but it was really good.

ahhh, a new mailing list to conquer

Well, everybody seems to be arguing over James and if he's a good singer and crap like that. Personally, I have no problems with him at all and I don't see what the big deal is. You got me thinking though, who would be a decent replacemen? The AC/DC guy? Peter Brady? Barry White? Julio Iglesias? I got it, Willie Nelson? How about Steve Tyler("Pull me ak-ak-ak-ak-under!")? Maybe Garth Brooks("if you take the doggone time, yeeha!"). The Gza? Mama Cass(I guess that's not possible)? Lou Reed? Debbie Gibson? Barbara Streisand(she'd cost too much). Micheal Jackson("You can make a fortune in lies eee-heee!"). I'm rambling on now, aren't I? Ok, I'm done. Later.

Hey Zach, Are you nuts? The keys in DT's music make it that much fuller. I'm sure even JP thinks so. There is so much more that you can do with keys- stuff that your "ordinary rock band" couldn't do without 'em. BTW, I'm *not* a keyboard/piano player...I just happen to like DT's mix of guitars and keys. And your comment about Awake is kinda stupid. Awake is *full* of keyboards!! I never could tell why people were complaining (when it first came out) about the lack of keys. Sure, IAW had a more bright sounding keyboard than Awake, but Awake is still full of keys. I'm *not* a keyboardist (or that much of a musician), but I can tell that the beginnings of 6:00 and Eroto are keyboards. Why is there so much surprise when JP says "no, that's keyboard" at a clinic? It sounds like keyboard to me. Distorted, and many times you have to listen for it, but it's still as much there as it was on IAW...

They're from a town not far from where I live ( and I know some jammer comes directly from that town , and I'm pretty sure he knows the members personaly. Sorry I forgot the dudes name). They are truly a great band. The best around this part of my county I would say, but I think they lack in originality.

May I ask you, Stephane , where you come from? I'm sure it's close to the border (am I right :))
