NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: RUSH - CYGNUS
    UPDATE for 9/30/1995

NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
NOTE: I have sent out ALL CDS ordered through TODAY! If you mailed it and
I have received your mail, your CD is going, going, gone! On its
way to you. So guessing approximately, anything sent up until
Friday is probably enroute to you. Also, a scant few CDs turn up
lost or delayed from time to time, I will endeavor to solve that
problem ASAP if you let me know!

Hi all! It's time to update y'all on the CD project. I have finally
received my shipment of the Rush CYGNUS CD, a CD with an incredible sound
board show from the mystical Hemispheres tour, on it. And I guess I will go
ahead and take orders for it... if you like, you can email a reservation
before you send your check or MO. Here's the info:

            Rush "CYGNUS"
Recorded at: TCC Arena (Convention Center Arena)
            Location: Tucson, Arizona
            Date: November 20, 1978
Source: 2nd gen of original soundboard reel,
transferred to 48kHz DAT and mastered to CD
            Quality: See notes below.

            Track Listing:
            Anthem
            A Passage to Bangkok
            By-Tor & the Snow Dog
                    I. At the Tobes of Hades
                    II. Across the Styx
                    III. Of the Battle
            Xanadu
            Something for Nothing
            The Trees
Cygnus X-1 Book One: The Voyage
            Cygnus X-1 Book Two: Hemispheres
                    I. Prelude
                    II. Apollo
                    III. Dionysus
                    IV. Armageddon
                    V. Cygnus
                    VI. The Sphere
            Circumstances
            A Farewell to Kings

            Running time 72:52

I did a pre-order project like this for the Dream Theater mailing list
a few months back and it worked out very, very well. Any of you who want a
reference or voucher for me, direct your question at any DT fan who is on
the Ytsejam list, and I'll let their judgment be the Word.

            How to order:

(PLEASE ALLOW 3 to 4 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.)
-A lot of you might have forgotten about this. Since I'm
caught up to today's orders for mailing, it's not likely to
            take quite this long anymore.

Send a cashier's check or money order (made out to me) to:
                    Michael Bahr
                    Limelight Music
                    3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
                    Chandler, AZ 85224

Note: I'm just a humble fan with a project going, not a store
or CD warehouse... the dealers and mailorder places can give
way better prices on other common boots so I don't have or
sell any of them. Limelight is what I put on my business license
so that I could pay sales tax, thus nobody would ask how I was
getting all this money to deposit and why I'd dump thousands
at a time into CD production. :)

            The price is as follows:
                    $25 US - base
free - postage within the USA
                    $1 - postage to Canada
$2 - postage to anywhere else

So it would cost $25 to send it to Humble, Texas... $26 to
send it to Lakeside Park... and $27 to Geleen, Holland.

There are around 70 copies left... get 'em while they exist! :)

A note on quality. It has come to my attention that a lot of people
were expecting quality comparable to Rush's live releases (ATWAS, ESL, ASOH)
or comparable live albums of the 1970s. No bootleg can compare to these.
Even the best of them, Rush's Oakland '92 performance, a digital soundboard,
sounds flat and hollow compared to the three live albums. Cygnus is no
exception to this: it does _not_ measure up to the three live albums. But!!
I will stake this claim here and now and defend it until the day I die: The
sound quality of Cygnus is superior to 99% of all Rush bootleg recordings.
Since I own over 1000 Rush shows on tape, I can make this claim with some
degree of accuracy. :) It's a legit soundboard taken on an analog reel,
manually, in 1978. Those factors weigh in when considering the quality. There
are also three dropouts on the master tape that I cleaned up as best I could,
usually by fading into them. Be aware of these things when you order... so far
people have usually been happy with it (all the boot collectors are having a
field day with the comparable quality) but those who were expecting quality
like that of the 3 live albums have been disappointed, every single one of
    them. And that's no fun.

Now then, back to ordering via cashier's check or MO.

Why use a cashier's check or MO? Besides the fact that they can't
bounce, they are traceable both ways. You know that if you don't eventually
get a CD or a refund, I'll be in deep shit. :) It's really the safest way to
buy, as I myself have been burned in net dealings before, I do my best to
alleviate those fears where my projects are concerned. Actually, I don't mind
personal checks really... I just recommend the MO or CC because it leaves that
paper trail and is totally safe, and if I _didn't_ recommend MO or CC, you'd
all have reason to believe it was a scam of some sort. So while a personal
check is OK with me, understand that a MO/CC is the best way to buy.

PLEASE! When you send the money order, TELL ME that you're ordering
the Cygnus CD. Most of you are already doing this, I just wanted to make sure
you all knew, as I am still working on Acoustic Dreams, as well as
taking the early pre-orders for the next Dream Theater CD. Also, be sure to
include your email address. It's quite hard to get ahold of you if something
    goes awry, without it. :)

A note on the CD LABEL: It does not say the word "Rush" anywhere on it
but all the songs are labelled correctly (Anthem, The Trees, Hemispheres,
etc.) and it says "Cygnus" rather prominently. Dont let this nuance of
labelling throw you off. A lot of you are already familiar with this, but
before the Italian Cd companies started legally making boots in 1991, all
boots produced in the USA could not bear the band's name on their labels.
Look at Rush boots like "Through any Window" and "Nassau '82".. on the record
labels they have fake band names and song names. I just put the real song
names and "Cygnus" and left Rush off, since I didn't want to complicate things
any more than they already were. It _IS_ the Rush show from 11/20/78 and it
is already well known here on the net, if a bit scarce.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or call me
at (602) 777-0501, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm Pacific time. I'm sorry
that I don't have an answering machine (as this is my home line, it's mainly
available to all of you as a courtesy) but if I'm there, we'll chat. I do
have classes these days so I may or may not be there. I do have work and
school like the rest of you, after all. I *WILL* answer it if I'm there,
that much I will definitely promise you. If you miss me entirely and want
*me* to call *you*, I will do so if you leave your number in email. Please
understand that it will probably be brief as I'm a starving student with a
    phone bill. :)

    Thanks all!

Wow! I am excited about the new Fates Warning! I love "Inside Out" but
I was a little disappointed by it (except for "Monument" which must have
been written by God). After 'Parallels', I expected the band to take a
left turn and try to re-invent them selves. It did not happen with
"Inside Out". I think of "Inside Out" as the b-side to "Parallels" (with
    the obvious exception of "Monument").
Ever notice how the lyrical metaphors of "Life In Still Water" and "Pale
Fire" are different metaphors for the same thing: Stagnation.
Reading the lyrics to "Leave The Past Behind", "Life In Still Water", "The
Eleventh Hour", and "The Road Goes On Forever", it seemed that a left
turn was eminent. It seems like it will finally happen.
Damn, I am psyched about the new FW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Greetings o, Ytse-Jamming ones,
Anyone watch Strange Luck on Friday? IMO that's a great show.
Especially the part near the end where the innocent guy was in the electric
chair and the other two guys were trying to get there in time to stop the
execution, and in the background Live's "Lightning Crashes" was playing.
Does anyone besides me think that that was an amazing sequence?
As for DT, they still kick as much ass as they did yesterday. Bye.

    Hey all,

Just thought I'd post this again, and again, an aga.......anyway,
DT is coming to Connecticut on December 27th. Here is the
    scoop so far:
The club is in New London CT and it's called the El-N-Gee. I
stopped at the club yesterday afternoon when they were closed
and spoke to the owner. I kinda volunteered my services to do
all the flyers for the show and help him with the ticket sales. I
have a lot of DT artwork on my machine so this will be no
problem (remember the ytsecon??). I showed him the "Thank
you" in the ACOS sleeve and he was mildly impressed. Then I
showed him the pictures from the Ytsecon and he began to
understand that I was serious. Well, he said he'd put me on the
guest list and he'd reserve me some tickets if I thought anyone
on the jam was interested in coming. He told me his club could
hold about 500 people.....yea right, if we all shower that day we
might not mind being shoulder to shoulder......anyway, he yelled
at his ticket man and told him to call Monday and put the tickets
on sale. I#ll keep you all posted as to when they actually go on
sale and if I can hold a block of tickets for the Jammers. He
said the price would be $10.
The club is approximately an hour from Providence, RI and
about 2 hours from Boston, MA. I#ll keep you all posetd....

Ibanez does not make 7-strings any more, last time I checked. They're
only available used. The JP signature model is a sixer, and furthermore,
the only songs on Awake which do use the 7 are CIAW, Mirror, and Lie. I'm
    pretty sure about that.

    Greetings and Salutations,
I figured it was time to post the story of how I got into DT.

Once upon a time, in a land that's not too terribly far away, I read
Modern Drummer magazine. In that magazine, there were a couple of Mapex
Drums ads bragging about how this Mike Portnoy guy used there equipment. I
didn't pay much attention. Then, a couple of issues later, Mike Portnoy got
voted the best drumming performance of the year for Awake. I had to see
what all the buzz was about, so I went and picked up a copy of Awake. As
soon as I picked up my jaw off of the ground I went right back to the music
store and got Images and Words. Well, there it is. See Ya.

Helloooo jammers! I figure I've lurked here for long enough and it's
time to post. My roommate got me turned on to DT right after I&W came
    out and now I'm addicted.
My roomie picked up "Mind Control" a few weeks ago, a boot with
mostly stuff from the Japan tour and 2 tracks from a London show. It's
sweet--lots of great improv material. I was checking out the insert and
there's an order form listing other recordings--one of 'em is called
"Lords of Sound", a 2 CD set from a '93 show. Does anyone have this? Do
you reccommend it? please mail 'n' let me know.
BTW--ACoS continues to rule. A kid in my dorm who, until
recently listened exclusively to Rush (the band, not the large
Conservative guy), just picked up ACoS on the advice of folks in a Rush
newsgroup. I think we have another recruit... Keep jammin'!

Hello all. I am actually someone who is already on the jam, but because "I"
wish to keep my real identity anonymous, I shall use another account. You
will have to excuse me on that account, but I have my own reasons.

I have something I'd really like to share with you all, about an experience I
had last night (9/30-10/1). I don't know why I'm doing this, and you may
think it's all rubbish, but that's ok. I guess I just wanted to get this out
of me once and for all.

Last night, my girlfriend and friends did something perhaps bad; we took in
some shrooms. I decided that I was going to bring some cd's to listen to on
my "journey." I pulled out some Tori Amos, Yes' "Fragile", and a couple of
others. The last I put in (and actually became the first and only cd I
listened to all night) was ACOS. You have to picture it- it's pitch black
outside in this nature preserve in the back of my school, and we're all just
tripping face and looking at the millions of stars. Very surreal. ACOS was
fun to listen to- it didn't necessarily give me some drug-induced revelations
about the world, but it was good listening.

Some time later, after it had pretty much worn off of me, I was trying to
deal with my girlfriend, who was still going strong (it was her first time).
And she wished me to tell her stories, so I began to ramble on as best as I
could about King Lear and Titus Andronicus (how's that for opposite sides of
the spectrum?), and then she bade me to tell her a "happy story." So I began
to tell her about a boy who was growing up so young and innocent, and he
would look at the world with those callow eyes, and he would jst get pummeled
by everybody and everything in life- he had someone special in his life, and
one day, she looked him in the eye and said "I love you", and then "goodbye."

Now, are we getting somewhere? Do you all perhaps see where this is going?

Yes, my interpretation of the song may be quite "inaccurate", but I'm, afraid
that may be irrelevant at this juncture. The story continues.

I went on telling my how even after "she" left, "he" (our protagonist)was
determined to build himself back up again. Gradually, it beacme a reality,
and finally, he was back at the top again with someone special in his life
again, and towards the end, he would sit back and think happily that although
his life was ending (or perhaps just beginning), some other fledging was
about to take the long path which we can call "life."

As I was telling this story to my girlfriend, something else on a much more
REAL scale began to dawn upon me. All my life I was searching for "her", the
person who meant the most to me. When I was a little younger, I thought I had
found her, but once I was away at college, during that time when one
discovers his or her true friends, she basically told me "I love you,
goodbye."Her being out of my life was perhaps the most difficult thing I had
to go through (ironically, SHE goes to my school as well- a twist of fate, I
guess). And yet, I knew I had to move on, and grow up. Somehow, somewhere
along the line, I found someone who has evolved into the exact perosn I was
looking for since God knows when, and she was lying next to me holding me
tightly. To have this concept dawn upon me was so incredible. At this point,
it wasn't the drugs talking for me, it really was my pure emotions.I swear to
God, it was the greatest feeling I've ever had- no drug can nor ever will do
    that to me.

I am fully aware of the fact that my sense of accuracy is questionable, but
do you knwo what? That's ok with me. Firstly, we are all open to our own
interpretations of music (although I actually concur with the recent opinion
posted back about how ACOS is more like a "rebellion against religion", as
I'll call it), and secondly, it's just nor all that relevant. I'd just like
to say that ACOS (directly or indirectly I'm uncertain) did something HUGE to
me. Thank you all, and if Mr. Portnoy happens to catch this, THANK YOU!.
Please do not reply to me personally, as i will terminate this ASAP. Put it
    on the jam. Thanks.

    Hi,
At about 1:08 in UaGM when Mike P.'s got the sixteenth's going on
the bass drums and hittin' the snare on two and four, that thing just takes
off! But when he switches the snare hits to one and three it just kind of
ruins the whole effect. Agree? Disagree? Possible new thread?

This may be a bit off topic, but I just saw Gary Hoey's new CD at
Best Buy yesterday. He's on Surfdog Records now (probably his own label) and
the new CD is simply self-titled (Gary Hoey). Gone are his rhythm section from
the his first two albums, now replaced by Nick South on bass and Frankie Banali
on drums. Tony Franklin returns on the first track "High-Top Bop" and
additional keyboards were done by Lori Weinhouse.

This is still a guitar instrumental album, so fans of the genre that
Joe Satriani popularized should definitely check it out. I am listening to it
for the first time right now, sorry I can't review it yet. But I like what I
    hear so far.

A response to a bunch of things by a bunch of different people:

    1) A lot of people got into DT through PMU because thats the song that has
gotten the most radio play (I would assume so at least...). PMU is a very
good semi-radio-friendly song. Personally, i like _Metropolis_ much
better, but I is a much different song, maybe a little too different for
someone who isnt into that type of thing.

    2) Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I bought the same ACoS as the rest of ya.
Listening to LaBrie sing Zep hurts. I also really like Queen, and I don't
really like James singing that either. In SOME places, I think James does
a little better than Elton John, but overall, I think Elton has more
emotion. James has almost nothing in his voice for the Genesis, and Roger
Waters just does so well on PF's _In The Flesh?_ that James can't touch
it. Give me James singing _Surrounded_, _To Live Forever_, _Voices_,
ect and he's incredible, but the covers... no.

    4) I know Jason Fickett, and I think that for the most part, he has great
music taste. He likes alot of quality music, and is open to hearing new
stuff. He doesnt quite have the respect for DT that I do, but... Anyways,
I don't see what is wrong with his review. Yes, I did just say that. He
didn't like the CD, so he gave it a bad review. If someone gave me
something I didn't like to review, I would have no credibility if I gave
a glowing review. I probably would try to point out some of the good
points, but if i didn't like it, I wouldn't say that I did.
What would be the point of writing Fickett saying that you love ACoS?
You're not gonna change a thing. The 1000+ people on this list personally
wrote me saying that they love how James sings on the covers, and how I'm
not a real DT fan, or a real James LaBrie fan because I don't, I wouldn't
bow to the pressure and develop a love for how James sings there.

    5) I love Dream Theater. Really.

    6) I borrowed (thanks Fernando) _Structural Damage_ by the Steve Morse Band
(Dixie Dregs guitarist) amd it's pretty cool...

well, I recently finished reading all the Posts From the Summer
(all 2700 of them, approx...)( you may think I'm mad,
    and you're probably Right
but at least I won't be trying to start a Thread Concerning Hair...)
(not in the Near Future, at least...)

happily, I chanced to Pick Up my copy of ACoS
even Without the help of Fellow Ytsejammers to tell me when It came out
and, even more happily, thus missed the Opportunity to be Driven Mad
by all those Pre-Release Reviews... :)

now, (here's the part where it gets Long)
    my views on ACoS...

on my First Listen, I was Disappointed.

that Marching Snare (or Piccolo Snare, or Tin Can, or Whatever)
hit me First Off and I thought it was because of the poorness of
my stereo System...I found out I was mistaken...
I still don't know what to Make of it --
it really Sticks Out (good? bad?)
I think I'm used to it Now
and I notice that it just Demands airdrumming... :)
(actually, one thing my bro and I noticed on LiT was that Most of the Time
it was Impossible to tell whether or not he was Actually Using a snare...
and Maybe that's why this Thing is there)

I distinctly heard Sherinian miss his Cues and come in Late in several
places although I admit that those Places are no longer So Obvious to me

The slowness of James' singing Really Bothered me...
I'm used to it now, though I still do Think that a certain Intensity has
    been Lost

Derek's Clean Piano Sound really rankles me...it just doesn't Rock
and reminds me rather of a Barroom Piano...or something

I *really* miss the Excluded Verses, esp the 'I stood outside...' bit
but I do agree that it No Longer Fits within the Context of the song

I think that's enough Slag for one post
    now for the Good Stuff...

the intro is Good and Appropriate

I'm gratified to be able to hear Myung a Bit More Easily
(sounds as though they Thinned his Tone)
and I have a Question for bassists:
is that a Tapping Pattern under 'the snow has now fallen - ff' or what?
    it sure sounds Bloody Good

I love the three Sections (in pt.IV) where the instruments take turns
Doubling the Drums (though Derek's sound is Odd right there...)

I like the way James speaks the "preparing for the flight - ff' passage
(and yes, I do miss [and sing] the "Please Don't Go!")

big Sigh of Relief that 'mercy fornification' was not included
(even Bigger one, that 'massive act of fornification' wasn't :) )

    now about the Covers...

the Sound Quality is Astounding on these...

I love LLB/FfaF...hard to choose between That and the Original
(I don't think my mom noticed it wasn't Elton John when I played it for her)

PS is pretty good...I Actually Heard it on KISW in Seattle
(granted it was on Metal Shop at 1:30ish on a Sunday... :P )

    the Zep medley is incredible...
out of Curiosity I listened to the Original Studio Versions
and DT absolutly Crushes, Stomps All Over, and Buries the originals...
(and I mean that in the Nicest Possible Way, all you ZepHeads...)
it started out as my Least Fave and is now one of my Most Faved

    The Big Medley is sweet...
the only Sour Part for me is BoRhap
because it is not done So Well.
Derek comes in Late, *with* the Wrong Piano Sound, and then...
well, Petrucci just doesn't do Brian's solo Justice...sorry guys...

aside from that, the BM is Great and Beautiful

    and I gotta go
my next post will probably dissect the Album Art, so Be Prepared!

    Gotta do it.

    > Hey Bafu,
    > Webster's Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary defines inequity as
    > 1: INJUSTICE, UNFAIRNESS 2: an instance of injustice or unfairness.
    > You need a new dictionary bud. Not a flame. Just picking up the

    > Bracken

    Hey Bracken,

Let me begin by re-stating what my p.s. began with. "For those who
remember," ie if you weren't around the Ytsejams when I deciphered all the
lyrics to ACOS and corrected a lot of crazy things people had written in,
you probably won't understand why I included that p.s. in the first place.

I am aware "inequity" is a real word. That's how I translated James'
singing from the live shows I had to work with. However, a lot of people
e-mailed me directly after "the big translation" to tell me (1) I couldn't
speak English, (2) I needed to get a new dictionary, (3) "inequity" isn't
a real word, (4) please stop posting non-real phrases that don't exist
because you're cluttering up the jams with bullshit, etc.

I was being sarcastic in my p.s. by displaying to those Angry Ones the
actual lyrics and re-stating what they had all said to me, thus adding,
with a big smile on my face, and without words, that Mike Portnoy seems to
agree with me after all. :)
