I just recently picked up a copy of the Gallery Gazette. (a newspaper that
a local record store puts out). There was a review of the new ep in there
and I figured I would share it with all of you:

"A Change of Seasons": This monolithic piece takes up one whole
side of the tape. This is Dream Theater's Opus, a phenomenal work that is a
mainstay of their live shows. I suppose they got tired of people
bootlegging copies of this song, so they went into the studio to it some
justice, and to give their fans what they want. If you've never heard of
Dream Theater and consider yourself a progressive rock Aficionado then, bud,
you should be flogged. These guys create arrangements that Yes and King
    Crimson would get envious over!
"Funeral for a Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding": Awesome cover.
"Perfect Strangers": Again, awesome cover of a Deep Purple classic.
"Led Zeppelin Medley": Jimmy Page should feel honored.
"Big Medley": Any Band that can squeeze Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen,
Journey, and PHIL COLLINS!! in one continuous live recording is ok in my book.
For fans of Dream Theater this is a must get for their totallly cool
version of "A Change of Seasons." For those of you who are new to the band,
check out the live cover side first. I'm sure you'll be amazed.

I thought everyone would like to read this.

One last thing...does anyone know if they plan on realeasing the whole
    "Uncovered" show at anytime???

    Fellow Jammers,
Hi everyone! First I would like to say thanks to all the kind souls
who wrote and told me the proper way to subscribe. Then, a very wacky
    hello to Brian Wherry.
But, here's the important part of this letter: I heard John Petrucci
has guitar clinics every now in then. Where's his next one? How much does
    it cost?
How did I get into DT? Well, my friend brought over a bunch of tapes one
day, because he was into heavy metal and all I basically listened to was
Rush and Spyro Gyra.(Yes, the jazz band) So I heard DT and I was like
,"these guys are O.K." And that was that. Until about 8 mos. later , I
realized that he had left the DT tape on my shelf. I had just gotten my
driver's license, and I needed some tunes so I grabbed it. Well, as I was
cruising along I said to myself," Hey,these guys sorta sound like Rush"(It
was I&W) So I turned It up alittle more. Then, UAGM started playing, and I
started to drive faster and faster. So fast in fact, that I went off the
road and smashed my dad's car! That's how I got into DT! (Does UAGM make
anyone else feel like they need to break the sound barrier?)
    Later!

    Hey jammers,
Well, I've read most of the stories on how everyone got into DT.
But it seems that most of you only heard DT for the first time in
the IAW era, when Pull me Under and Take the Time got some airplay.
Isn't there anyone who knew DT when WDADU was released, or maybe
even before that? I myself got into techno metal with Tony MacAlpine
and other instrumetal, then Queensryche's O:M and then Crimson
Glory. That was all in the late 80's (remember the MTV show Metal
Hammer with the Bailey brothers?). Aren't there any more hardcore
    techno-metal freaks out there?
    Later!

    Wietze.

    Hello,

I have just subcribed to this list. I haven't gotten any mail yet, is there much traffic and am I in digest mode from the start ?

Just a short introduction : My name is Pim van Loon and I live in Holland. I like all kinds of music, but when it comes to symfo/prog. rock Dream theater and landmarq are my favourites.

What doe you think of the new album ? It has just been released here this week, it entered the album top 50 at 41 That's verry good, even for a more commercial band, so yes they are populair in Holland.

    WOW I LOVE IT!!!

oh btw did any of you think that maybe the little kid IS the old man, hmmmm scary thought!, I was also thinking that the part after "....goodbye" IS AMAZING!!, the sirens and all that shit.....wow i think that no band causes some much emotion in the listener (I tremble when I hear the winter noises).

BTW, does anybody have "InstuMental" is a DT CD that has the demo's for I&W (No vocals whatsoever), and it has John Petrucci Guitar Player "player of the month" entry, it super-fast acoustic playing.

    Hi there!

I've been a reader of the Ytsejam list for quite a while now. The thing that is different in it is that it's interesting, unlike the Rush list that I was previously subscribed to. I really like Rush, but somehow the banter was too inane. No flames, please, it's just MHO. You should have seen them going on for weeks about "Christ what have you done" versus "Christ, what have you done"... :) I would like some of you guitarists and musical experts to get your heads together and make a kind of "FAQ" for the musical side to Dream Theater. I play guitar myself but can't even say that I am "not that good" because, actually, I can only play death metal (then again, who can't?). I *can* also play grunge, but I never do because it's no challenge. But I am digressing. What I would very much like to see is a list of all official DT releases with songs listed and the CD playing times at which interesting things happen. You guys often mention 7/8th and god knows what other time signatures. What I'd really like to see is a list along these lines:

01'40" Myung plays a really cool myxolidian bit in 42/3rd time sig here 02'00" The whole time sig changes 03'42" Pettruci changes between phrygian and godknowswhat here 42'01" Mike Portnoy plays 7/8ths on the cymbals and 3/4th on the bass drum...at the same time!

See what I mean? I'd like to get some kind of list that I can display on my computer's screen and then listen to the songs. I mean, someone said once that Kevin did some really subtle stuff on "Metropolis" but I never actually discovered it... I think having such a list at our hands would make some of us (among which me) appreciate the band even more. After all, DT is a very technical band and no doubt some of you 'Jammers know what they do, too. And please, possibly, also make some sort of "glossary" where needed. Not all of us have studied music theory! And I vote for some of the Mike Bahr CDs to be included (notably the different version of "A Change of Seasons" on "The Dance of Eternity").

Oh yeah: To the guy who was puzzled about "A Change of Seasons" not being on his copy of "Dance of Eternity": It's because it's "Dance of Eternity" and not "The Dance of Eternity". By the way, people on this list *always* refer (with DoE) to the wrong one of the two. It should be TDoE.

Speaking of these abbreviations: I think the list is so big it wouldn't matter much if we're write out the abbreviations. I'd like to read the stuff normal. I mean, WDADU and TWHTSTS are OK and unique, but the shorter ones are a PITB (Pain In The Butt).

Mike Bahr: Hope your system will be up and running soon. I for one sent US$ 75 to you not too long ago and I am waiting desperately for the stuff I ordered ("Cygnus", "Acoustic Dreams" and more...).

A non-DT note: Any of you heard the new Joe Satriani, called "Joe Satriani"? Anyone also think it's a bit of a let-down?

And about people who wonder if the Ronnie Scotts stuff will be released on video: It will. I've got it first-hand from Warner Brothers. I can only vouch it for Europe, though. I know nothing of release dates in Japan or the US. It will be released in December.

About the discography: Is there already a DT bootleg discography more recent than January 1995?

    So far my...er...2 US$.

NOT my first post (probably my third), but the first that is likely to start a controversy....

    First, a few trivial items:

    magellan@u.washington.edu writes:

    >p.s. for those who remember: > >"In my den of inequity" ??? >Geez, I guess Dream Theater is as stupid as I am. Everyone knows >"inequity" isn't a real word. These guys can't speak English, they need >dictionaries, etc. :)

Not a flame, just a correction. "Inequity" is not a word, but "iniquity" is, and "den of iniquity" is a common phrase. Do the lyrics actually say "inequity"? Must have missed that...

    He also states:

    >The live stuff was cool too, even though I've never heard (of) any of it.

Wow! Must be nice to be so young. However, if you have never heard the incredible music of Kansas, old Genesis, and (at times) Elton John, you, my friend, have not lived life to its fullest.

    nuprin@wichita.fn.net writes:

    >Do you have any idea how sexy you are or how busy I am....? >Be cool...

Uhm, gee, thanks, I think. But please control yourself. I'm cool.

Now for the fun part - my obligatory ACoS comment:

Am I the only one who is NOT blown away by ACoS? I had not heard it until I got the Subconscious CD, but even now, after at least a dozen listens, it does NOT "rUleZ". From any other band, it would rule, but from DT? Mediocre.

What is the problem? I prefer more tightly composed songs. ACoS tends to wander and has little focus - at least to these ears. It is growing on me, but I'm having to force myself to listen to it - this was not the case with sons written in the same era: PMU, TTT, LTL, Met-P1.

And now, for the most blasphemous statement ever made on the 'Jam:

I prefer listening to the cover songs rather than ACoS

    1. The first "mercy fuck" obviously symbolizes the little poeple who make up the bureaucracies of America. The second "mercy fuck" refers to the fuck woman gives a man (or the other way around) when she feels sorry for him. In fact each instance of "mercy fuck" has a different meaning. This goes to prove Derrida's (don't worry, the only poeple who give a shit about this guy teach English at your local university) theory of freeplay--that words have so many meanings that we can't really be sure of what they mean in the first place. In other words, none of us are really reading the Jam, we all are just trapped inside language, isolated from all else.

    >You know, I think they printed the lyrics wrong in "A Change Of Seasons." >Let me know if you disagree, but on "V. Another World," it sounds to me >like James is singing this: > >"I'm sick of all you mercy fucks, > holding me at bay. >And I don't need your mercy fuck > to get me through the day. >Mercies fuck and so can I, > hold on boy, no time to cry. >Mercy these fucks, I'm climbing down, > I won't let them push me away. > >Oh come let us adore him, > Mercy and then fuck him, >No matter what, don't let him be, > Let's feed upon his mercy fuck, >Now it's time for them to deal with me." > >Well, have I met the requirements now? Have I done my part to fill the >Ytsejams Quota for saying those words? > > >Bafu Vai > > > But seriously. . . 2. The roses on ACOS, I think, are another plea for a little reality. The rose is traditionally a symbol of "eternal beauty," but the back cover shows a whithered and dead rose, pointing out that nothing lives forever, even the symbols of eternity.

I just heard on a NY pure rock station (104.3) that Dream Theater will have a concert at the Malibu Beach Club. This concert will be on December 28th. I didn't hear anything about the price, but who cares about the cost. I would go to a DT concert whatever the cost is. I hope to see all the NY/Long Island jammers at this concert. I'll see you all there!

Excerpts from mail.ytsejam: 2-Oct-95 Fates Warning by Victor Jason@dawn.joensu > I've been reading alot about FW. Can someone fill me in on it? What kinda > stuff izit? Progressive? Heavy? etc... > Thanx!

Sometimes progressive, sometimes heavy. Usually both. It's hard to give an overview since the band is constantly changing and no 2 albums sound that much alike... They're a lot different than DT...they have 2 guitar players and no keyboard player (although keys pop up from time to time) so they sound more like heavy metal band than DT does. But there's a lot more to it than that. Here's how the albums break down:

    1. Night on Brocken A little progressive, but not much. Pretty heavy in an Iron Maiden sort of way, i.e. crunch is there but takes a back seat to melody. John Arch has a weird voice. It may take some getting used to. This probably isn't the album to start with. A lot of people say it's just like Iron Maiden so why not just listen to Iron Maiden?

    2. The Spectre Within Heavier and more melodic. Progressive elements emerge more clearly, with complex vocal harmonies and longer, multi-part songs. There are a few excellent good tracks on this CD, especially Epitaph and the Apparition. Some keyboards appear in small doses, nothing like DT though. They're there mostly for atmosphere. Again, John Arch has a weird voice, but he does really cool things with it.

    3. Awaken the Guardian Arch goes insane with the vocals. His harmonies and melodies are *amazing.* It's still more "metal" than "progressive," and pretty heavy most of the time, but I don't think more beautiful melodies (vocal and guitar) have ever been packed into one album. Good acoustic stuff mixed in a lot of the time, too. A lot of great, great, great songs. Guardian, Exodus, Fata Morgana...Still, this probably isn't the one to start with unless you have an easy time adjusting to unusual voices. The lyrics are fantasy oriented, but with meanings applicable to real life.

    4. No Exit Arch is gone, replaced by Ray Alder. He might also take some getting used to, but like Arch he's a brilliant singer. This album is quite progressive, and also about as heavy as it gets. It includes the 22 minute progressive HEAVY metal epic, The Ivory Gate of Dreams. The lyrics are angry, defiant, and sometimes fatalistic and depressing. If your taste is heavy, than this may be the album to start with.

    5. Perfect Symmetry Someone messed up producing this one, I think, and as a result Ray's voice is very annoying at times. This is probably the most progressive album they've done. It's still heavy in places, but a lot less so than No Exit. It's also a new kind of heaviness, where Mark Zonder's drums (which are absolutely brilliant) do most of the heavy work with double bass and melodic hi-hat, and the guitars provide the tone by holding chords. That's not all they do, of course, but it's a style that starts to emerge here. The drums are the lead instrument in many places. This is hard to describe. It's a style I don't think I've heard anywhere else but from Fates...The highlight of the album for me is the very progressive At Fates Hands, featuring Kevin Moore on keys. This is as close to sounding like DT as FW comes. There's also some really nice acoustic work in Chasing Time. The lyrics have gotten very depressing.

    6. Parallels This is probably the most accesible album. Excellently produced...Ray's voice has none of the lisp that it did in PS. More commercial than anything they've done, and the song structures become very standard. Still very progressive though, in more subtle ways. Also very heavy in places (Point of View), in that new style of heaviness. On the surface it sounds a lot like Queensryche, but the similarity fades almost totally when you grow more familiar with it. The drums, again, are absolutely brilliant. Lyrics are still pretty depressing. Best song is probably the Eleventh Hour.

    7. Inside Out A lot like Parallels, except not as well-produced. Standard song stuctures, more commercialism, probably the least heavy of all the albums. Still excellent songwriting and subtle progressiveness, and some not-as-subtle progressiveness in the climax, Monument, a brilliant song in all respects. Lyrics are still depressing, but not quite as much. Overall, though, this album is more rock than metal, and not quite up to the standards of the previous 4. I think that may have something to do with the production, though, since these songs totally kicked ass when I saw them live.

    9. Chasing Time This is a compilation. Probably the best place to start...it'll give you a taste of everything.

    Hope this helps.

I have both of these. The sound quality on Majestic Harmonies is great -- better perhaps than even DoE, and that's saying something -- and it was a great show for KJ's voice as well. :)

Lords of Sound is good. I paid $42 for it and was delighted to find the guitar bit on the LiT video is also on there, fairly similar and about as long (maybe a bit shorter). Sound quality is very good, not quite as good as MH and there's a back-echo on the REALLY deep bass drum hits. Nice also to have "Status Seeker" on this as well.

DT playing some NE dates in December? Hmmm, time to call Elektra again..... It's not as if I can't get them a decent guarantee for an Atlanta show....I can. :)

Is there going to be a tour in the U.S, any time in 96? If so will it be anywhere in the New Orleans area?

It seems as if Mike Bahr isn't the only one who's been hexed; my day has been pretty well fucked to boot. The pertinent part of the string of disasters is that I accidentally spilled a little tea on the top of my monitor, and ZIP! It blanked right out. This is the point where I go stomping around my dorm, muttering curses that would make a born sailor blush. I've been gone for two hours; hopefully when I return, the workings inside will have dried out sufficiently and will show the screen again. If not - I'm screwed until it gets fixed. This system does NOT like sending mail to AOL for some warped reason, either, so if any of you whom I know there don't hear from me for a while - that's why.

I knew I should have stayed in bed this morning.

    My other purpose for posting:

I NEED CONTRIBUTIONS FOR ISSUE XI! Do I have to make like Mike Kizer <G> and post a note to every dang Jam to make sure everybody knows what the fanzine is and that I NEED SUBMISSIONS? I've only gotten one contribution so far, and a second in the works - and I need much more than that. Reviews of ACOS, of the last few shows DT played, of really awesome underground prog/power metal bands - please! .JPGs or any other picture files relating to DT would be wonderful, too. The band gets copies of each issue; this is your chance to let them know how you feel. Please? Pretty please? Pretty please with whipped cream around it and a... ah, well... never mind.
