    First:
I wanted to be part of Ytsejam 1000!!!

    Second:
Do you think Elton John has heard the DT version of his song? And if so, I
wonder what he thought of it. I mean we all like it and of course the
    original is great too.

    Third:
If I become a Wisconsin dub site for Subconscious, will I toast my cassette
deck? And what do I need to do?

    Fourth:
My favorite part (not that you all care) of ACOS is the transition at 18:36.
    It just plain rocks.

    Fifth and final:
Does anyone think that the piano part around 11:30 sound like a Joe Jackson
song? It reminds me of "Steppin' out"

That's all! Keep rockin and call your local college station or community
station (like mine, 89.9 WORT, Madison) and order them to play DT. I played
    "Funeral" tonight! :-)

    Later

I was doing a metal show in College when WDADU came out, I didn't play it
too much then, but I remember it being described to me as ELP meets
Metallica. When I graduated, the WDADU disk came with me (original Mechanic
release) :-) I also have the Status Seeker radio promo.

The first 150 Acoustic Dreams CDs are packed and ready to ship...
I'll be getting these out with all possible frequency, starting today. (I
hope this lands in Ytsejam #1000!!! Happy Birthday Jam!)

I really think everyone's going to be surprised by this one. I
was when I picked them up, and I created the damn things! :) The sound
work they did worked out well, and George Fan's fantastic cover is far
and away the best illustrative work I've ever put on a CD. And finally,
the printers got it right when I requested dark colors and deep, rich
    hues.

When you all start getting your CD's, let's see some reviews!! If
it's positive, great! If it's negative, I still want you to post it,
because only by hearing what's wrong with my projects can I ever hope to
    do it right next time.

            Merry Christmas! :)

Well, my first impressions certainly weren't good. I'm giving it a few
listens to see if it's really all that bad.

To those who are interested, he plays with Nathan East (bass), Manu
Katche (drums), and Andy Fairweather on, believe it or not, rhythm
guitar. Joe seems to have gone for a much more minimalist, jazzy sort of
approach. It's very different from The Extremist or Flying in a Blue
Dream. There are very few of Satch's characteristic soaring melodic
lines, and his sound, in general, just feels weedy and thin, and his
    playing uninspiring.

Maybe I'm being harsh; I'll listen a few more times yet before I make up
my mind. Oh he also uses that "microphone" off "the phone call" again..

This time from my AOL account, simply because I don't have time to go to the
    computer lab right now.

Courtesy of Babs and Air Dance's scanner, I now have photos of a bunch of you
from the YtseCon! I don't know which of them are printable, but I would like
to put a couple in the fanzine. However, I don't want someone to get mad at
me for putting their face in a public forum, so I will list the names of the
people I have below. If you have a problem with being published, PLEASE
contact me here at AOL, since I only check my school account a couple times a
week. Right now I will *only* be distributing .jpgs to the people who are
the subjects of those specific photos (if they want to see if they're having
a bad hair moment or whatever), since I don't know if Babs wants them to be
    publicly available.

    Babs

    Mike Kizer
    Tim Adams/girlfriend Lynn

    Ted Knickerbocker
    Andy Keegan
    Jim Coleberg
    David Kuznick
    Bill Buckley

Mike Bahr stated that AD is now in shipping! Joy!

Richie Rivera stated that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
I agree. Perhaps Mr. Fickett isn't into DT so he might not find ACOS
very interesting. There are even Jammers here who are not impressed by it.
(For the record, I am impressed, but then again, that is my opinion.)

Matt Sirois has in his signature file:
"Mi lengua, mi lengua...se sale de mi boca." -Vai (no clue what it means!)
Forgive my very *broken* Italian translation but I think it says:
"My tongue, my tongue....the spice (salt in this case) of my mouth"
Any Italian Jammers out there tells us what it really means???

Anton Max and Zach Gemmill are going to make me go out and buy Perfect
    Symmetry!!!!!! :D

Someone posted about the John P posters. I called the place in Pa. and
the guy told me that they are all out of the giant posters and the other
one (I think the one with the RGs) is $5. BTW, when put on hold while on
the phone, the radio station that was on was none other than WPST, the one
that the world famous Hairball interns at.... :)

I think I was John Nguyen who posted about someone being so beautiful and
him being so busy.... Man, you gotta be really busy to post something wrongly
and have it read by 1000 people.... :D (Don't worry, been there, done that! :D)
The only thing is, the person that was meant to get that message ended up with
    something about DT!!!!!!

Greg Cole mentioned that November 15 might be something that has special
meaning to Mike Portnoy. Afterall, the cover art is Mike's idea. The
speculation that November 15 might be a *special* anniversary to Mike
could very well be true. I can understand Mike's feelings. My real mother
gets flowers three times every year: mother's day, her birthday and the day
she was killed in an automobile accident, December 20th.

Who needs this crap on the Ytsejam?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!

Flames are legit, but outright, unfounded insults are not. If I disagree
with someone, I try to let them know, but I try to be civil.

Now if Bafu Vai never posted transcriptions of various, obviously
difficult passages, both instrumental and vocal, or if he never said
anything intelligent, then a flame, not a sophomoric insults would be in
order. Obviously, whoever the guy was didn't see the humor in the new
"Mercy Fuck" lyrics. Maybe this guy should really fess up, and admit
that he's not really a DT fan and should go back to watching eMpTyV.

I was eventually able to find The Dream Theater in Monterey. It is actually on the opposite corner to #701 Lighthouse Avenue at Lighthouse/Prescott, backing on to the road behind a TAI KWON DO Academy and a Surf shop. It was closed as it was am, but it looks really great. 'Recycled Records', opposite had I&W, AWAKE and ACOS (new of course) as they know the connection. Patricia

Hi from Germany again (guess what: it's pissing down again)

I've just gone through the last 7 Jams (yes, I was off work last week), and having had a little time to think, and being inspired/provoked by some of the new stuff, here are a few comments and thoughts that may interest a few of you.

    1. The "I really miss Kevin, Derek is nowhere near as good" crew: this one is for you. As several people have already said, Kev has gone and we are just going to have to stick with it. Now, let's go back into history a bit. Does andbody out there remember when Rick Wakeman left Yes? (Just after the Topographic Oceans tour for you youngsters) I thought it was the end of the world - for me at the time, Yes were simply the best band around, they had just toured with the best and most demanding album they had ever done, and the Wankman just ups and leaves. Nobody could imagine him ever being replaced. Then comes the press release that Patrick Moraz (who I know from his previous work with Refugee, aka The Nice part 2) is the new man. Some relief, some disbelief, lots of "I'll really miss Rick, Patrick is nowhere near as good". Along comes the album Relayer and - wow! Still definitely Yes, but with some new directions and elements. I'll admit I missed Rick's Mellotron playing, but the new stuff sure made up for it. He also made a good job of the old stuff on stage. What I'm trying to say is give Derek (and the rest of the band) a chance, and be open for new influences from Derek.

    2. The "I much prefer the live version of ACoS to the studio version" crew: this one is for you. Have any of you ever seen the roof of the Sistine chapel in Rome? All in all an amazing piece of art, you might agree. Have any of you ever seen some of the original cartoons that Michelangelo drew up before he started work on the real thing? They too are NOW accepted as masterpieces in their own right. I somehow find it difficult to imagine the Pope looking up at the finished painting saying "Very good, but I prefered the colour of God's beard in the first sketches, and there were more angels, I'm sure...".

OK, I think that's about all from me for today. Feel free to criticise me if you want (you can even agree with me if you feel really kind), this is, after all, a discusion forum (one of the many features of the Jam).

    stay safe and happy listening

Not that you could understand them through James' horrible diction, but here are the _correct_ lyrics:

The roses in the window box have tilted to one side everything about this house was born to grow and die oh it doesn't seem a year ago to this very day I said "I'm sorry honey if I don't change the pace, I can't face another day"

and love lies bleeding in my hands oh it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock n roll and you were just a fan but my guitar couldn't hold you so I split the band love lies bleeding in my hands

I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you and all those burning hoops of fire that you and I passed through you're a bluebird on a telegraph line I hope your happy now but if the winds of change comes down your way girl you'll make it back somehow

and love lies bleeding in my hands oh it kills me to think of you with another man I was playing rock n roll and you were just a fan but my guitar couldn't hold you so I split the band love lies bleeding in my hands

I think I may have implied that the production on Inside Out is bad. I don't think it is. Certainly not as bad as, say, When Dream and Day Unite. But it doesn't capture their live power at all.

I think it may also have something to do with Ray's singing. When I saw them in Pittsburgh he used his higher range a lot more than he does on the album (even on the IO songs)...I think maybe they wanted to start toning it down so that in a few years when he doesn't have that range, they'll have a pretty solid repertoire of songs that don't require it. But for now, he's still belting it out live.

Well I'm just back from holiday, only reading ytse 595, plenty to go, why have you all been so busy ? Maybe someone has pointed out, that the John P's solo is also not quite note for note, but 'nothing really matters' . I am a long time Queen fan, hence the notice of Freddie's incorrect spelling. I was at Ronnie Scotts and it is wonderful to hear it all again. Patricia

Hey all you jammers who did not like my letter responding to Bafu's (supposedly) sarcastic lyrics to ACOS,

Yeah, maybe I misunderstood him, maybe they were sarcastic, but I can't stand to see DT lyrics altered in the least bit, even if it is sarcastically. I didn't mean to disturb the peace on this mailing list but it does need some life. I AM one of the BIGGEST DT fans and I've probably been followng DT longer than most of the people on this list. I SAW CHARLIE in concert and that's more than I can say for a lot of DT fans I know.

EXCUSE ME for not owning a computer more recently, I would have been on this mailing list a long time ago.

    THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!!

    Jammers---

in response to a question posted: no, i don't think Ibanez makes a line on 7-string axes anymore. However, you might want to check out Samick. They make custom stuff, and have a line, but availability is the question. Chances are, if you own a guitar, it was probably made in the Samick factory anyways - they make Fender Squire, Fender Basses, Washburn, low-line Gibson and Martin, and just about everything else... 25,000 guitars a month.

BTW... i've gotta get my 2 cents in... its MERCIFUL, dammit!!!

Also. i read the review of ACoS in the University of Michigan paper, and i was content with the fact that they had something good to say. The alternative scene is still happening up here, and flannel/courduroy imparement runs rampant. However, the Restroom Poets and the Brothers Grimm are doing their best to change that.

i actually like the snare sound on ACoS... its as if its tuned high or something. But what really made me cream my jeans was the artwork. i agree - the little dude on the cover DOES look like Mike at age 7.

Jammers--- let's not trash talk our fellow Ytsejammers. I know Bafu thinks everyone is entitled to HIS opinion, but at least I got a good laugh for today.

BTW - James LaBrie covered those tunes better that anyone in the entire universe could have done. To go from Journy to Genesis with such precision and his killer tone made me cry. My girlfriend never liked DT until she heard "In the Flesh" - now she wants to borrow all my CD's!!!

Be warned: there is no DT content in this message. Since I know that there are several Lillian Axe fans on this list, I was just curious if anyone has heard the demo tapes for The Bridge and Near Life Experience (Ron Taylor and Stevie Blaze's respective side projects). I just got my The Bridge tape in the mail and it blew me away. Very pop-oriented but with incredible harmonies. If you want any info on how to order either of the tapes, e-mail me privately. I haven't heard Near Life Experience yet, but I ordered it. Fans of Lillian Axe should definitely consider ordering these tapes.

Hey all, Ok, here's a recap on my jamming-history. I'd been on a crappy unix shell account from my school for a while, just observing the jam, now that I finally have a slip connection it makes it a little easier to participate. Anyways, I'm 14 years old, a Freshman in highschool, and live in Lexington, Ma. I somewhat got into DT in '92 (I was only 11 at the time =) when I bought a cassette copy of Images and Words. I was obviously too young (hey I'm no genious, but pretty close like most of the people who listen to this band) to get into the whole, progressive aspect, of the album. So I just listened to PMU and TTT which I'd heard on the radio. In the end of '94 I was shopping for a CD with some extra cash, so I bought Awake. I quickly got into it, and sucked up all the DT material I could find at my local record stores. So in the future, expect my (somewhat) opinionated responses to the jam... |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| | Adam Cook Dream Theater*Queensryche*Rush* | | acook@tiac.net Metallica*Fates Warning Red-Sox gotta beat | | Ibanez S470*ADA MP-1*Fender HOT*Zoom 1012* Indian Scum!! =) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------
