    Well, in an article from Guitar Shop, JP said he uses a really old Gibson
    accoustic that plays horrible, but sounds incredible (as you can hear from
    the record). He also says he uses really huge strings (.13's?) to make it
    sound big. So most likely he tuned down the gibson accoustic, or maybe pitch
    shifted it...

    Uhm, lesse, that solo is cool. UaGM solo kicks, the one in pt 5 of ACOS I
    love, cause it's got so much soul and shows that JP is not your typical
    shredder. And of course, the Subconcious ACOS, pt 6 solo is what I feel his
    best work ever live...

    Did I read that right? The Marquee has closed down!? I thought that was
    THE club for up and coming bands in England. I seem to remember hearing
    about a lot of bands getting started there, including The Who, Yes, and
    Marillion.

    That's all that goes on at my HS, and I think it's because it's all the kids
    are exposed to. I think there are two reasons for this...
    1. Kids my age have to be accepted by everybody else, so they do what
    everybody else is doing. And big evil corporations like MTV capitalize on
    this. Is it just me or every time I flip by that channel they're either
    playing TLC, Silverchair, or Bush?? Ugh
    2. Radio Stations do the same thing, if they never play different bands how
    are different bands going to be heard? No wonder this musical industry never
    goes anywhere... and I get insulted for liking DT around campus sometimes
    because they're different (musical predjudice anyone?). Also people say
    James Labrie on my T-shirt looks like Fabio =) oh well, I guess you can't win.

    Sorry if this is old news to you all (prolly is) but I've only been around
    14 years...BTW, does that make me the youngest on here? anybody younger???

    Sad to hear some jammer's thoughts on the new album as I bought

             I listened to the Zeppelin medley in my local CD shop, and it was
             so
             squeaky clean that it lost the human groove and the swing of John
             Bonham,
             especially Achilles, which felt like studio musicians reading
             charts with

             I've been a DT fan for a couple of years now and I'm highly not
             impressed
             by the EP. Change of Seasons is nice, although a little flowery
             in places.
             What's the point of recording covers if they sound exactly or
             almost
             exactly the same as the original. I can see ripping one out in
             concert
             just to keep people grooving, but why release covers if they're
             the
             same? The only bit that I really got into was the Journey thing

             that was only because they do it a little different - more guitar,
             etc.

    Please don't post long messages. I really can't be bothered to read them.

    I much prefer witty one-liners, or short messages with a point, which us
    'jammers seem to be good at, than the awful neverending note-by-note analyses
    of every single song, which are also regrettably common on the list.

    I know that if I don't like it then I don't have to read it. If it's more than
    about 30 lines or so (including paragraph breaks), then I ALWAYS skip it
    (unless it's from Mike Bahr).

    So if you want people to actually read your posts, why not make them readable
    and concise, instead of wittering on for hours?

    well, it was just easier to notate it that way since it is tuned the same
    as a 7 string. it probably is just a regular six with fat strings tuned
    down a perfect 4th so that it is the same tuning as the bottom 6 of a 7 string.
    since he never plays anything on the top couple of strings until the electric
    comes in (the part that i didnt include, since my guitar was tuned down :) )

    that open low B really adds some ominous mood, doesnt it? :)

    this weekend i will be working on tabbing out more, i will probably be skipping
    little parts that are too hard (like that insane part where the keys, bass, and
    guitar are all playing contrapuntal lines in either 16ths or 32nd note triplets,i cant tell which it is) :)

    For being a journalism grad. I sure have a lot of typos in my notes (see
    concurrence with Rich Rivera this issue!!)

    Also....FINALLY picked up WDADU. Thanks to all those in the Ch-town area who
    helped me locate a copy. Found it at the BEST BUY on North and Sheffield (near
    Goose Isl.). Also picked up LATM. My main thought on WDADU is Charlie wasn't
    nearly as bad as I expected, nor as I had heard him to be on Subcon., etc.
    Still like LaBrie better. Can anyone e-mail me directly with explanations of
    the DT "symbol?" I just can't seem to figure it out and it's been 13 months

    I agree with Rich Rivera.....This Fickett guy and his ACOS review wasn't a
    review at all. He gave one nod to DT's musical ability and then just ripped on
    the entire genre the way I rip on NIN, Green Day, Liz Phair, etc. The big
    difference is I am not in the business of reviewing recordings. If he was at a
    bar with is buds (most likely those in the alternative mainstream), there's no
    problem (in general, of course, if I heard him, I'd kcik his ass :)). But he
    displays nary a bit of professional journalism nor the musical tolerance
    needed to accomplish his goal of being a credile critic.

    P.S.--I was a print journalism studanet at the Univ. of Ill., did and still do
    extensive radio work and am a media relations professional....this is given to
    try and solidify MY credibility.

    I don't know why anyone is giving sooooo much credit to LaBrie for being able
    to change delivery styles from one tune to the next in the Big Medley. He's
    not making any abrupt changes, the rest of the band is. If you've ever done a
    medley, especially one with songs that are fairly close together style-wide
    (as opposed to singing along with the overture to a Sondheim musical), what
    james is doing ain't that hard. MHO...LATER-

    Hey, Jammers! I have been here on the list since last year (not counting summer, though, but my account is free!). Sometimes I feel like a bit of an outsider, so I don't post much. I do make exceptions, however, when the subject is guitars. In response to the seven-string acoustic thread: IMO, it's simply a standard six-string acoustic with the low E detuned to B. Why? 1. I've never heard anything about any company making an instrument such as this, custom or otherwise, and I consider myself pretty well "in tune" (ha, ha) with the subject. Any innovation like this one would certainly make it into the guitar mags (e.g. Nuno Bettencourt's custom Washburn doubleneck). 2. He doesn't need all six strings to play the first part of the riff in question, so that the detuning of the low E is easily facilitated. 3. I think that when the higher-register stuff comes in (sorry, I have no index reference) it is probably on another track. In this way, JP could easily pull of that whole section. There is no way that that tone is from a processed electric, so this is my only explanation. I could be wrong, though... Oh, and here's how I got into DT (if anyone is interested): I first heard them along with the bulk of society when PMU was on eMpTyV (sorry to steal that from its creator, whomever you are, but it's really cool!!) My girlfriend at the time (shudder!) liked the song, so I of course hated it without listening. She liked all sorts of alternative music, which I really don't care for AT ALL, so I immediately passed judgement on a band that I have now realized to be the greatest musical entity on the face of the earth! I later heard all of I&W when a guy in my band borrowed the CD from a friend in his dorm. WOW!! I kick myself for not being open enough to listening sooner. I can now say that I will love DT 'til the day I die! I was even lucky enough to work on their crew as a local lighting tech when they came here to Minneapolis!     Hmm, back to dream theater! I think ACOS was FAR too short, maybe DT should strive for the 74 minute song (to fit a CD) or maybe a symphony with 3 parts and a coda :) .. haha i'm just kidding of course.

    And for all you folks who think that the acoustic riff at the beginning of ACoS is not represented throughout the song, you're very very wrong. Just listen carefully, and you will hear the same chord changes underlying some of Kevin James's vocals. Maybe not the EXACT same riff, but close enough. it's the same idea as PMU, where the distorted guitar follows the intro clean guitar to some degree.

    well its my first time writing to the list so i hope i'm coming through. anyway, Strings and Things here in Memphis has the IBanez John Petrucci model on sale. and my friend Bill who works there can get it to me for $1199!! thats a deal. i hogged that guitar for an hour and a half jammin on it, i really dig it. espacially the pickup selector and the wide range of tones you can get from it. its really warm for a "shred" guitar. well i was wondering if any of you know exactly how many were made this year. or any other kind of interesting info on it.

    I was in a guitar contest recently and thought I'd share my attempts to spread the "word" of DT. I played the solo to UaGM, but no one except my friends commented. I'd bet a lot of money there was no one else in the crowd that recognized it...sigh...

    I don't think people should get pissed off about changing lyrics although I'm not aware of what happened exactly. I always change lyrics usually to make them funny and have sexual connotations, while making the changes as minimal as possible.

    For example, "Gabe Tang comes to early..." instead of "Morning comes too early" in Another Day. I changed one word but the meaning changes dramatically! E-mail me for more examples!

    For a first time listener, I'd recomment the early stuff. _Close to the Edge_ is one of the best albums ever, but if you're not a fan of side long epics, this might be bad start. _Fragile_ is almost as good, and the tunes are a little more broken up.

    Right now I seem to be listening quite a bit to _Relayer_. "Sound Chaser" is great!
