To John Nguyen: You're attending a Mike Portnoy drum clinic? I don't
suppose it would be possible for you to, I don't know, accidentally drop a
microphone into your sock or something? I'd LOVE to hear a bootleg of a
clinic given by Portnoy. Does anyone know if this sort of thing is ever
done? I'm sure the drummers on this list would appreciate it ytse much if
someone could get MP's instruction/performance on tape or some other
    recorded media.

And I think it was Paul Cashman (?) who was going to a JP clinic? I'd
still like to know if you think you could tape it, and I am aware of how
Petrucci feels towards bootlegs of all sorts. (and if it wasn't Paul who
said they were going, this goes out to whoever it was)

Hey, folks! I just joined the YJ, and must say it's a pretty diverse
crowd on here. Myself, I come from a mostly metal/hard rock and
prog rock background. I've been into Rush and Yes for years now and
still have a soft spot for the older heavy stuff (Zep, Sabbath, Maiden,
Kiss, Scorps, real VH, AC/DC, Priest, Who, Hendrix, Max Webster).
Currently, i am bigtime into lotsa Rush, pre-Rabin Yes, Satch, Floyd,
DT of course, and hey -- Jazz! If there are any other jazz lovers out
there, it would be cool to hear from you. I find jazz is the key
ingredient that brings rock over to prog, and prog fans are really
missing something if they're not checking it out. Mind you, not all
jazz is to my taste, but if you can find out the sub-genres of jazz
that relate more closely to your rock interests, then you'll hear a
whole new world of music. I find the DiMeola and Corea stuff to be
really close to Yes, Tull or Crimson. And guys like Getz and Miles
Davis really pushed that envelope. Listen to this stuff and you'll
see the roots of prog, and the roots of DT even! Later...

    Dear all,

about the fav. solo thingy, well for me it HAS to be the solo during
To Live Forever, It has about three different moods to it and the melodies
    thru' out are beautiful.

This only just beats the second place which is the jam at the end of the
(apparently) weak song Innocence Faded. I think this soing is great but
VERY Rush, in fact blatant Rush, but still that solo - man!!! I get goose
    bumps just before it starts!!!!!

OK I got the point that it was spanish. Sorry, but the Romance languages
are all very similar. As for the salt thing, as you know, sometimes you
can't translate things word for word. Sale is Italian for salt. From what
I could see, salt is a spice. Spices tend to be bitey. Therefore I took a
stab at it meaning that my tongue is spice of my mouth then you could take
that a little further with saying that my tongue is the blame for some of
the spicier (racier) things I say. Get it now?

I might have a actice imagination but this is what I inferred as to what it
    could mean.

And YOU are the welcome one. ;-)

For the few of you who can't hear it, and I don't know why you can't, the pedal tone on the intro IS a b. From what I believe, it is not JUST the e tuned down to a b. Going down to a b with an e string would not enable the string to be tight enough to have the tone it does on ACOS, let alone ANY tone that I would want to have. I believe that it is not just a b string replaced for the e string. It is either a seven etring acoutstic or a six string with the bottom siw stirngs of a seven stirngs, ie B E A D G B. The more I think about it, the more the latter of the two seems reasonable. Any conflicting ideas that make sense? Please post, and I will see if I am wrong. I'd rather hear some agreeing, though. Thanks ... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well, it is definitely there. in fact the open E isnt even used until well into the riff. it starts out on low B, then B octave above, then E octave about the open E, then G above that.

look at my transcription. i think he must have played it tuned like a 7 string for all the open strings to ring the way they do.

also, live he played this on the 7-string ibanez (including the intro), right? that is why i figured he carried that tuning over to the acoustic for the recording. it is not just a "drop B", every string is dropped down a 4th.

i suggest you grab a guitar, hit the open E, and keep hitting it during that intro. you will find that there is alot of stuff happening below that :)

Maybe someone out there can help me. Sorry that I'm ignorant to this, but would someone please tell me where the words Mercy Fuck appear in a DT piece, and on what recording it appears? I thought that it would be in ACOS on tDoE, but I can't seem to hear it. Am I deaf, or is it not in this particular redition of the piece? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Btw, I think it is kind of funny how some people criticizize the snare sound on ACOS (which is a nice tight CRACK) yet no one seems to mind the terrible tom sound on this recording(in comparison to DT's earlier recordings), especially the higher toms. I think Maxwell House could make toms with more resonace and depth... but hey that's just me...

First things first: Does anyone know what happened to Steve Bauer? I met him one afternoon when I was in Rochester for a week back in June, and he took some of my blanks to make some copies for me. I haven't heard from him since I got back, and that was four months ago. I'd check privately, but I don't have his email address on hand anymore; it got lost when I ditched Prodigy. I'm not going to go into "public skewer mode" yet - I want to check and see if anything happend to him, first.

    Secondly...

<<Sorry if this is old news to you all (prolly is) but I've only been around 14 years...BTW, does that make me the youngest on here? anybody younger???>>

There's nothing wrong with being "only" 14. You have to start *somewhere*. I was 12 when I first started listening to metal, which necessitated me hanging out with the older folks in junior high and high school, and for the most part they tolerated me, but ignored me. I wouldn't worry about it too much, though; no one's going to make a big deal about it.

Thirdly... (oh, stop groaning - how often do I do this, compared to other people?)

<<I was wondering (this has probably been done before) what music/bands everyone was into BEFORE they first heard DT?>>

Power metal, mostly - the bands in my .sig are more "new" favorites, with the exception of Queensryche - you could usually find me listening to them, Savatage, Armored Saint, Fates Warning, stuff like that.

<<P.S. If you ever get the chance to play Doom on an Imax system, don't miss it (monsters bigger than you) :-)>>

::shrieking:: The Ultimate Doom is one of the two games I have on my 'puter in my dorm (higher memory problem, so I'm limited in space), but it gets boring after a while. I could always take off God Mode, but... nah. <G>

    And lastly... ::cheering::

    << THE KILLING HAND (OJ)>>

Ahhhh - another parody! Can I print this in the next newsletter too? <G>

Okay, I think I'll go to class now.

Unrepentantally yours (eeeew, and that from a journalism major!),

    Jaime

    0) Congrats to Ytsejam for surpassing #1000, and thanks to the band for commemorating this with our very own EP. :) :)

    1) Michael Kizer, I sent a DT letter to you at your non-AOL (preferred) address, and got a note back saying it had not been delivered for two days and would be re-queued for two days. Please let me know if you got it.

    2) After seeing some messages posted to Ytsejam from younger teenaged fans, I wanted to say....WAY TA GO! Just when I'd thrown up my hands in despair, certain that all DT fans are over age 17 or so, you give me reason to hope. :) I have a fair number of friends who are 14-18, and I'm happy that they at least like DT (after being exposed to DT incessantly by me :)), and some have become fans.

    3) The guitarist from the local band Wigged, who played at the Wreck Room last night, had something to show me (upon seeing my AWAKE tour shirt).... He'd just purchased the Petrucci Ibanez 6-string. "Sweet!"

    4) John Petrucci guitar clinic, Ken Stanton Music, Marietta GA, this coming Sunday at 7pm, $10. Just in case people missed my earlier post.

Aw c'mon guys. You've never heard of a 7-string acoustic guitar? I don't know if JP uses one or not, but if YOU want one you can come to Minneapolis and have a guy named Steve Kakos build you one for $3000.

    >The quote "mi lengua...." is from the Steve Vai album, "Passion and Warfare". >At the time, Steve was in Whitesnake and he wanted the guys to appear on the >album in one way or another. The quote went like: "Mi lengua, mi lengua, se sale de mi boca." It translates to: "My tongue, my tongue gets out/comes out of my mouth". I'm surprised that with this many Ytsejammer there must be some Hispanics who'd care to translate but none did...

I am responding to the letter about Moore's lyrics and his leaving the band i Ytsejam 1005. I believe that the loss of Kevin Moore is something that we all are going to have to get over, although I will admit that I liked his lyrical work. If there is one thing that I hope even more, it has to be that I hope that their work stays CLEAN!! Dream Theater is one of the very few bands that has the decency to withdraw from cursing like mad and from singing about nothing but death and drugs! I personally, alot of the time, find value in some of their lyrics. If there is one thing that I hope does not change with the loss of Moore is the decency in their songs. There, I said it. If you don't like it, flame me, but...I stand by my morals.

    Dream Theater Crazy, Chris

P.S. I need more responses to the survey in Ytsejam 1005. I need more!!!!

P.S.S. Now, wasn't that nice and concise.

I am curious if anyone recalls ever seeing DT use bass pedals in concert. Have seen them three times and dont recall seeing them, myself. And, I dont think that DT has ever used them on disk, but I am not positive. I personally have always liked bass pedals because they really fill out the overall sound, adding a lot high energy punch to the impact of those climatic moments.

Specifically, there are a few moments in ACoS where the song seems to cry out for their use. Are bass pedals just too old fashioned ?? I remember (very old) Genesis using them on songs like Entangled and Supper's Ready and they really added a lot.

See everyone in New London !!!!
