    Hello everyone,

Just thought that I would see if anyone would be interested in a
complete (or as nearly complete as possible) list of bootlegs. I am in
the process of devloping a thorough list to include reviews, complete
track listings, etc. of all the bootlegs. If you would like to
contribute, please send info to me privately.

            Some points to include are:

            1. Venue
            2. Track listings
            3. Date of recording
            4. Type of recording (i.e. audience, soundboard)

And of course your own review of the discs.

Here are the boots that I know of(if you can add anything to this list,
    please do so):

    1. CONSCIOUSLY UNREAL
    2. LIVE IN LONG ISLAND PT.1 & 2
    3. SKYWAY OF NIGHTMARES
    4. HOME SWEET HOME
    5. CLASSIC LIVE
    6. SUBCONSCIOUS
    7. LORDS OF SOUND
    8. DANCE OF ETERNITY
    9. DREAM OUT LOUD
    10. DREAM IN PROGRESS
    11. WAKE UP
    12. A KICK INTO A DREAM
    13. ACOUSTIC DREAMS
    14. INSTRUMENTAL I & II
    15. DREAM THEATER VOL. 1 & 2
    16. TRAGEDY
    17. COMEDY
    18. LOST IN THE SKY
    19. MAJESTIC HARMONIES
    20. MIND CONTROL
    21. MILAN 93

I hope to hear from you bootleg collectors soon, as I am anxious
to get this project underway. Once I have the finished product, I will
post it for all of you to read on the JAM.

Anxiosly awaiting the arrival of AD.

    >anything Metallica did. Both CtE and the black album came out in 1992,
    >Metallica's in mid-August, not sure about the other.

to be honest, i think Countdown To Extinction was a damn fine album. and i
think it rules over Metallica's black album. i don't know, it seems
CtE was less of a departure for 'deth than the black album was for 'tallica.
i like the rawer, gritter guitar sound and down and dirty riffing and
soloing in the tunes on CtE, whereas metallica really went from the
crunchy metal sound on previous efforts to a pretty glossy production
on the black album. IMO, of course. but i went thru my phases of liking
both cds at one time; now i'm not so much into metallica, but i think
CtE was cool. i never bothered with 'deth's latest - i heard only one
song and it didnt turn me on, plus the opinions i got from some of my
friends (whose opinions i respect and share) were less than shining.

"selling out"? i don't think in terms of selling out or commercial; i
think more in terms of what i like. gee, what a concept, eh? i guess
few people can do this and just leave it at that, instead of blaming the
band for everything. hey, always be prepared to leave a band behind if
they start creating music that doesn't appeal to you. this is no love
relationship where you blame the other for what went wrong. these are
musicians who are following their dreams and creating music they like.
just live with it and continue to enjoy the music they did which you
    _do_ like. nuff said...

I was riding back to Richland from Seattle to see my family last
week, when I saw this guy who went to my high school and lived
on my floor in the dorms a couple of years ago. Anyway, we got
to talking and it turns out he has recently taken up the guitar and
is learning to play butt rock (you know, three chords 1-3-5, etc).
I knew from high school that he was a huge Rush cretin like me so
    I brought up Dream Theater.
"Who the fu?k are they?" asks Kevin
"Well, they're demonically skilled and they manage to write solid
songs. This CD in my player just came out and it's got
a 23 minute song on it.
    "Whoa."
"Do you want to hear it?"
    "Lay it on me, bub."

That freak used up all my battery power listening to ACoS, Awake,
and I&W. Well, making converts is, at the very least, worth its
    weight in batteries.

Bafu Vai -- did you get my mail about your Seattle ytsejammers
    dinner date idea?

To whoever was asking, my other 5 fav bands are:
Rush, Yes (before screwball Rabin), King Crimson, Frank Zappa, and
Genesis. Since others are giving honorable mentions, here are mine:
Bartok, Stravinsky, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever, Miles
Davis, Weather Report, Kansas, Dixie Dregs, John Coltrane, Dave Holland
Quartet, ELP, Chopin, Beethoven, Mahler, etc etc

topics. This being quite ambiguous, I must ask. what do we mean by related
topics? All forms of prog rock? What, what, what?

I heartily concur with this list (except Duarte, whom I've never
heard). To it I would add:

Steve Morse (really oughta check this guy out if you haven't)
Alex Degrassi (new age/jazz/country/blues/incredible solo acoustic
    stuff)
    Brian Mays
    Nuno Bettencourt (from Extreme)
Larry Coryell - This guy is stupendous live. Plays some serious
jazz/classical mind-blowing stuff. When I saw him live he played (on
acoustic through amps) Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. With a very slow
and deep flanger he played Bolero. I couldn't possibly describe
adequately how well he managed the Bolero melody with that flanger,
    but it came out amazing.

    Mike S.

PS - heck, always eager to discuss guitarists

For various reasons(musicians' mistakes, bad sounding instruments, noise)
"Live" albums/tracks are always touched up. Some are cleaned up a little.
Others are cleaned up tons. To my ear, LatM sounds hardly touched up(the
performance just sounds nice and raw. Also, you can hear many mistakes, which
is cool by the way). But the live tracks on ACOS do sound like they could have
been touched up a bit more than LatM, especially the vocals. But, again, this
isn't any different from what everyone else does for "Live" albums.

Hey, kids. Well, not being a guitar player, I'm not sure I could come up
with 5 favorites. But, as a bass player, I thought I'd list my 5
    favorites, not incl. JM:
    1) Geddy Lee
    2) Billy Sheehan
    3) John Paul Jones
    4) Chris Squire
    5) Mike Mills (R.E.M.), or Paul McCartney, depending on my mood

Others include John Entwistle, Les Claypool, and Frank Bello (Anthrax).

i don't think any of these bands suck, but...how could you place rush
and pantera as a tie?! just drop pantera gracefully off the list and
everything will be ok. no offence on liking pantera, but rush belongs
on that list - since you even considered putting them on there. hey,
if you "know" Dokken sucks, then why'dja puttem on yer top 5 list? i
don't mind some of their songs. they can be pretty decent at times.
old aerosmith is classic rockin music, but ever since they sobered up,
hey, i'm sorry, i can't appreciate the sober music (not that i'm an
    alchy or anything).

as an aside, it would be interesting to see what the prog bands these
days (including DT) think about the drug, booze thing. it may seem like
a lame thing to bring up, but i've read sooooo many interviews with
metal bands who claim they write their best stuff while all doped up.
somehow, i just don't wanna hear this. if they do, fine, just don't
tell me about it. but i wonder if DT has any particular views on all
that. BTW, i'm no bible-thumping type; i love beer MORE than the next

At Circuit City over the weekend, I was looking around inthe store and
found something fantastic. This is a brand-new store (it opened a week ago)
and as some of you may know, they have started carrying CD's. I was astounded
to find ACoS for nine bucks, I&W for twelve bucks, Awake for thirteen bucks,
and WDADU for seventeen bucks! I also stumbled upon LatM, which I will buy as
soon as go home again (this weekend --- I didn't get it because I had ordered it
from a store at school and today, they hadn't got it yet...I cancelled the
order! Ha!!! that'll teach them to be slow!) But, the main reason I'm
writing is to (cough!) brag (cough!) about what else I found in the store. I
couldn't believe it, but they had the Silent Man single from Germany! I love
it! It has the LP version of The Silent Man, A Take the Time demo (which I
believe to be more interesting than the LP version, IMO), and Eve. I love Eve
(the song, not the woman)!! It's not heavy in the least, and is the kind of
music that I like to listen to when I'm on a date or trying to sleep, or
listening to anytime (as with all of my Dream Theater stuff - 5 CD's now).

Sorry for the somewhat long post,
                                    Chris Crowder

P.S. does somebody know what's on the Lie single, and if they do, WHERE CAN I
GET ONE?!!!!!! Someone's got to know!

This was too good to pass up.

    1. Rush
    2. Kansas
    3. Fates Warning
    4. Alan Parsons Project
    5. Boston

Any other APP fans out there? I'd recommend their latest "Try anything
    once" to
anyone interested in something a little different.

I don't know about anybody else, but I've finally gotten over ACOS and can
    now listen to
my other DT albums again. I just cruised through Awake on the way to work
today. The more I listen to it the more it becomes my favorite DT album.
Lets hope that they top it with the
    next release in '96.

    Back to the shadows...

    Hey jammers,

Just a few things. I really disliked the fact that they didn't play all of
the Pink Floyd song 'In the Flesh' on ACOS. Also, it would be nice to hear
DT do a cover of 'Comfortably Numb'.

That said, and I know it wasn't much, probably just mindless drivel, I'd
like to know what Kevin Moore is doing at the moment. He has done some
awesome lyrics for DT in the past, so I was wondering if he was up to
    something. Does anyone know?

Er, also, how do I turn 'digest mode' off? I keep getting digests from
the listserver. The instructions have gone AWOL.

Is there an ftp site with the deeper understandings of DT's lyrics? I'd
like to see if I agree, that's all. ;)

    Thanks a lot,

    Paleface.

That's what I used to do... You can also pick up nifty little shareware

finally have both quoting and a .sig option via a small Mac program called

Unfortunately, I read it when it came out. Here's the transcription... someone with an FTP server that works (unlike this one) go ahead and smack it up to the archives with the oth4er interviews/articles. Hey guys! Let's get those articles more and more! Those of you who have seen the gopher at syrinx.umd.edu p2112 know how awesome it can get...

Anything in % borders is my commentary.

    >From Guitar for the Practicing Musician, January 1994 "Pull Me Under" Images And Words Dream Theater (ATCO/East-West)

Christopher: This could be metal at any moment--I'm just warning everybody. Rogers: Either that or it could build up into a power ballad. C: I feel like we might have to excuse ourselves here for a second. We might have to leave. % so get the fuck out! -ed % R: This is one of those guitar sounds that when he hits a note, about a million lights jump up on his guitar rig. C: Any minute now there is gonna be a squealy. R: Is this, like, Queensryche? C: If it is, let's turn it off right away because I hate that band. % blasphemy! fucking assholes % R: Hate it. This is the kind of music you listen to right when you start to get your pubic hairs. C: I can't even be fair to this music, I hate it so bad. I can't even sit through one song. I know I'm not being fair but I think it is complete garbage. That sort of guitar playing is just stupid. % it's better than anything you ever played, poser. % R: If I want to hear a metal band I really like old Black Sabbath and Soundgarden, heavy bands with brains. % I can't fucking stand to type what this guy is saying... it's so far gone from the truth. % If I were listening to an angry metal band I would be more into Rage Against the Machine % commercialism central % or Sugar. I like that Sugar record a lot, I like Sonic Youth a lot. % trendy shit % That's heavy, guitar based music that I listen to. C: Playing fast for the sake of fast is hideous. I hate that whole mentality of sitting around playing scales and cock-rock crap. % this is true, I don't think Christopher CAN play a scale, unlike the precision and attention to detail you hear from Petrucci, Christopher is sloppy and in a word, sucks. I can play better and I think I suck, compared to Petrucci. I figured out the riffs to "No Rain" in 3 minutes. No joke. % R: I heard some squealies. % some WHAT? % I don't really like that sound either. I'm not into those guitar sounds. When I hear that stuff I get feeling squeamish. Guitar: That was Dream Theater. C: We'll remember not to buy that record. I bet they have really nice hair... now I'm being mean. % no, now you're showing your ignorance. % R: This is just our opinion. There's a lot of people that like Dream Theater and that's fine. % got news for you... DT has more true fans than Bland Lemon will ever have. % They get off on it--good for them. They'll probably hate us, maybe they won't. % we do. % C: They probably do because we sound like we're playing sloppy. But that's alright, that's a different thing. % "we just suck, that's all." % We're just coming from a different space. R: In no way do we condemn this sort of music. These people have a right to exist. C: Just keep it the hell away from us.

[on to the other songs.] To give you an idea how fucked-up Blind Melon are, they liked: Medicated Goo - Traffic Midnight Rider - Almond Brothers

And they hated: Babe I'm Gonna Leave You - Sons of Mercury Omaha - Moby Grape Pull Me Under - Dream Theater Little Miss Can't Be Wrong - Spin Doctors Always With Me Always With You - Joe Satriani

In other words, they hated all the guitarists who are clearly better than they can ever hope to be.

But there's hope!! These letters to the editor appeared in the February 1994 issue with Alex Lifeson of Rush on the cover!!

"...I've had it! I'm sick of these stupid fucks writing that heavy metal is soulless, mindless bullshit..."

"...If you have something to say about another type of music, keep it to yourself."

    And in March 1994:

"Blind Lemon only wish they could compare to Queensryche and Dream Theater!"

"...John Petrucci's technical skill and rapturous melodies are things of beauty, things that Christopher and Rogers hate because they can't create such things themselves..."

    And so on.

    Blind Melon sucks.

    Dream Theater forever!

    To Martin Spain:

You have made some arrogant, ignorant and incorrect assumptions.

    1. Transcriptions are not the easy way out. Granted, TAB is no substition for ear-training, but even the most proficient sight-readers have trouble from time to time. And if you were a real drummer, you would know that drum scores and charts do exist.

    2. Drummers aren't better than guitar players. They're just different. While it may be easier to get started on guitar, both instruments take just as much hard work and time to master.

    3. Guitarists DO NOT have an easy time of it. Guitarists at all levels of proficiency still work hard, whether they are learning a piece from a transcription or by ear, to do the music justice.

    4. So what if you can play most of Portnoy's drum parts?!?!? Is the ability to play SOMEONE ELSE'S complex parts a measure of how good a musician you are? It only proves to me that you are a copy-cat artist. (I use the term artist loosely here). What are you trying to prove by boasting of having to do it the 'hard way' and figure the stuff out for yourself? It only causes me to suspect that you are boasting of percussive prowess to cover up the fact that you suffer from other inadequacies.

Martin Spain, you can take your attitude of yours and stuff it in an orifice of yours!
