Daniel T. wrote this in yj#1033
'I don't think that they sat down and
thought, "let's change our musical direction so we can sell 7+
    million albums."'

Actually, they did sit down and say that. I saw an interview with them on
eMpTyV when the album came out and they were touring with GnR. One of them
said that they wanted to write shorter songs with more direction that werent
just twelve different riffs thrown together. He said that they want to
appeal to a larger audience. Dont qoute me, cause that is not the actual qoute.

First of all million thanks to all who responded to my first post.

I'm just looking for some advice on places in NYC where I can find DT
CD's , finally get WDADU (I know i's pothetic) as well as shirts, patches
and similar stuff. THanx. Hope to see some of you in Malibu.

It's more north of Camden (somewhere between exit 8 and 9 in relation
to the NJ Turnpike). If your coming from Camden (which is at exit 4,
I believe), you can take the Turnpike to Route 33 East (Exit 7A -- I
believe). Take that to Route 537 East. Take Route 9 North and keep
going until you see Birch Hill on the southbound side (about 15
minutes after getting on Route 9). It's about 1/4 mile north of
the McDonald's in the Marlboro Plaza. If you pass the Route 18
    overpass, you've gone too far.

I'm sure this is not the only way to get there, but it should be
faster than going to exit 9 and then taking Route 18 South to the
    show -- especially from Camden.

My friend has threatened to kill me, so I've decided to do what I think
is best to save my life. Last week I posted about an idea we had for
everyone in the band as to who they would be if they were a character in a
movie. Forget what I said last time and read this:

    John Petrucci = Elliot Ness
    John Myung = Bruce Lee
Mike Portnoy = Indiana Jones (NOT a bad guy in a western
movie, this mistake is why I may die tomorrow)
    James LaBrie = Data

You may never hear from me again, so have fun with this while you can.
We still need a solid find for Kevin Moore or Derrick
    Iforgothowtospellhislastname. Please post your ideas.

Disclaimer: All content of this message regarding my death and my friends
intention to kill me is purely sarcastic. Please don't feel the need to
contact your local authorities. Have a nice day!

     Just a remark about Malmsteen:

He might be a puff. He might wear make-up rather excessively. He might be
getting a bit of a fat git. He might be coming across really arrogant. But
he *is* good. He used to be my #1 guitar player until I discovered Satriani,
Vai and, yes, Petrucci. When I interviewed Petrucci in February this year (I
think the interview might be on file in the 'Jam FTP site somewhere) he
mentioned that Malmsteen is very much appreciated by him. He also reckons
that Malmsteen plays with feeling. I can't judge this myself - I sometimes
tend to think that Malmsteen plays so fast just for the hell of it - but if
Petrucci says so I guess, well, it's gospel.

    Hi there,

I've got this question for any jammer who cares to read this. If you had to
make a 'best of' compilation for DT, what would you put on it? Let's say
that you to fit it all on one CD so that gives you about 75 minutes to play
    with!

Come to think of it, is it possible to fit the best of DT into 75 mins? :-)

Also, I've finally got hold of ACOS! It's not that widely available here in
the U.K. Anyway, WOW!!! The song gets better every fuckin time you listen
to it! It's all i've listened to over the weekend! (well except from Awake
once) I wasn't too sure about it on first listen but after a 2nd listen I
was addicted. In fact I'm listening to it at this very moment. In fact my
favourite solo in the song (& the world) is about to start (18:36). WOW!!!
That keyboard sound is soooo cool!!! The song just kicks ass at this point.
John P. & Derek playing together, God (sorry, Portnoy!) letting it rip with
the double bass pedals. It's absolutely fucking no doubt the best DT song
    so far. I love it!

And as to Portnoy's snare sound. Well I prefer a piccolo snare sound to a
more deep sound, but do think that some songs need a deep snare and on 1st
listening thought that it was out of place in ACOS. BUT, there are lots of
places in the song where the snare is just perfect.

Anyway, time to go. See ya,
                               Edd Ballinger.

    -Saviour Machine
    -Torman Maxt
    -Deliverance
    -Tourniquet
    -King James

These are all Christian prog rock/metal bands. It's a shame these
bands are not very well known. You can check some of these bands out
    at your local Christian bookstore.
    Later!

A bunch of folks have been recommending Operation:Mindcrime and - after
all - the label described it as "the" concept album of the 90s and/or
"The Wall" of the 90s. However, I think our friends on the list may be
betraying their musical roots when they recommend Mindcrime.

I am a recent DT devotee starting with I&W early this Summer, Awake late
Summer, and ACOS this past Saturday. On the other hand I got QR's Empire
in early 93(?) and Mindcrime that same Summer (and Promised Land upon
    release).

What I enjoy about DT especially the production on Awake and ACOS is the
    music and the concepts
immediately grab me similar to QR Empire. Operation:Mindcrime, however,
was decidedly more metallic, heavy and difficult to enjoy save one or two
tracks. An interview of DeGarmo bears this out. So if you're into sharp
harsh metallic sounds, Mindcrime is for you. However, IMHO, Empire and
arguably Promised Land are more similar in vein to the 3 recent DT releases.

If these comments appear ignorant it is because they are. I haven't
heard pre I&W DT or pre Op:Mc QR.

    Carry On.

Apparently, they were being interviewed in a guitar magazine (at least
the guitarists) and they named DT as a group that just relied on chops instead
of good writing and songs. I did not see the actual article, but I know it
exists because when DT was interviewed in the same magazine, the interviewer
brought it up. Petrucci, of course, was calm and refused to fight back saying
that he had no problem with their music because it had good melody and writing.
John wouldn't stoop to their level!! Yes!!
If anyone has a copy of this interview or whatever it was (the original
or the reply) why don't you post it?

Someone on the jam mentioned their favorite guitarists and included
Eric Johnson. GOOD CALL! Eric is amazing. I have seen him 3 times live,
but sad to say due to disputes, which he is very good at, you will most
likely never see another album by him. But I got another one for you.
Check out Chris Duarte. Has a blues, Jazz kind of style and his guitar
playing is phenominal. Turns out that one of Chris' biggest fans is Eric
Johnson so that should tell you something about him. He has an album out
called Texas Sugar Strat Blues. Well worth looking for. You may have to
special order it if you don't live in Texas but you WILL be hearing from
    this guy. I GUARANTEE IT!!

I have seen many great guitarists live and have a tough time
deciding who I think is best because of their styles. Here is the list I
can think of who I have seen.

    Alex Lifeson
    Eric Johnson
    Eddie Van Halen
    John Petrucci
    Chris Duarte
    Steve Howe

If you can think of anyone else that I should check out, please let
me know. Always interested in new music.

    Thanks,

    here are my faves

    1. Metallica
    2. Dream Theater
    3. Pink Floyd
    4. Iron Maiden ( they are the reason why I started to listen to Metal)
    5. The Beatles

    my five to guitarists

    Joe Satriani
    Steve Vai
    Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Jason Backer
    John Petrucci

actually this was really hard, because, I listen to a lot of stuff and like a
lot of stuff like Cranberrie's first album for instance. I just love it! but
I guess I cannot say stuff from just one album. for guitarists, haha, Malmsteen
is the reason I practiced so much, Joe Pass, Marty Friedman ( anybody herad
Caciophony?) , Paul Gilbert ( Racer X era), Vinnie Moore , Tony MacAlpine,
Albert Collins, Hendrix!, hell I even like Kirk Hammet:) So whats the use of
    making this list @!#%@

so I'll let you guys figure out the list while I go to class

I was wondering what the connection is between Tori Amos and Kevin Moore.

Why are there 2 Tori Amos songs on Kevin's Demos? What is the reasons
behind why they are on there? Can anyone give details?

My girlfriend is a big Tori Amos fan and had never heard Song For Eric.
Hence she has stolen my Kevin Moore demos!!!!!

I shall have to steal them back.

What can I say? When I listened to this monumental track from the CD I
was utterly blown away. I mean, I knew they did long songs but this is
amazing. I find myself wondering if the song was all recorded in one go,
or whether it was recorded in sections and spliced together at the end.
Does anyone know? If they recorded it in one take then they truly are the
kings of progressive metal (Although I'm not saying that they weren't before)
When I heard it for the first time I was like, when does it end? I love it!
In reply to Steve Borzilleri, I agree that Vai has no particular style,
although he excels at playing rock/metal, and Alien Love Secrets is his
best work yet. Plus Deen Castranovo's drumming is first class, too.

To the guy who appealed to all ytsedrummers, I'm glad I've finally found
someone else who's into DT and DOESN'T play guitar. I saw the video for
Another Day on MTV and instantly went out and bought I&W and spent the
following week going, er...HOW does Mike P do that? Then I bought the
Music in Progress vid, and all became clear. The drum solo is amazing,
and I'm proud to say that I can now play almost all of it! The thing is,
drummers aren't provided with an "easy way out"
in transcription books, so we have to work it out for ourselves by
listening and watching, and that is much harder than simply learning the
tab for JP's guitar parts. This conclusively proves that drummers are
    better than guitarists!

Thats enough for now. I'm outta here...

My favorites outside of DT (i.e. heavy play time for last few months):

    -Skid Row
    -Queensryche
    -Fates Warning
    -Earth, Wind and Fire
    -Warrant

My thoughts on Metallica: I am very wary of their new album. I couldn't
stand the black album (one or two grea tunes). I enjoy almost all of their
other tunes (MOP is still my fav!!). LATER-

GW: I was recently talking with Alex Skolnick about the same thing and he
was a little bit cheesed about the fact that some musicians criticize
    players who are technically proficient.

Petrucci: Was he tlaking about the Blind Melon guys?

GW: Yeah. They were making fun of you guys, and actually, Alex'a feeling
was "Well that's stupid, because it shouldn't be a bad thing to know how to
    play."

I couldn't find the article were that idiot actaully dared comment about
Dream Theater, but if I remmeber correctly, he said something to the effect
that Dream Theater are so obsessed with technique and complexity that their
music sucks. When I first read it, I was pretty pissed, but then I realized
that anyone stupid enough to say something so absolutely idiotic deserves
pity. In short: Blind Melon is a group of crunchy little wanna be grunge
idiots who have trouble playing even the simplest shit they write.

Well, maybe they're not that bad, but hell, they insulted Petrucci!

    Hi Everyone,

I recently bought the DT Japan '95 2cd show called Mind Control and
I am so impressed with it I thought I would write a short review
since I haven't heard much about it here.

In a few words, it is excellent. I don't think the sound quality could
be any better (I think it is BETTER than Dance of Eternity or Lost in
the Sky, or at least just as good). It is a soundboard DDD recording,
so it shouldn't be surprising that it sounds so good.
Now, the thing that stands out the most for me is the mix of the bass.
This is the way Myung is meant to be heard! You can hear every note
he plays and all the slapping textures, and it sounds excellent!
Also, even though the bass is loud, it isn't overpowering any of the
other instruments. Everything is clean and loud, from the low bass of
the drums (solid, not muddy), through the mids, and up to the highest
    of the symbals.

Now the performance: This show rocks! I've heard others say that Labrie
had an off night; I totally disagree. Labrie doesn't hold back at all,
and is as strong as ever. Now I like his vocals way better in Awake
as compared to I&Ws, so maybe this is why I like his vocals hear, but
the man is not afraid to scream, and this gives so much more emotional
power to songs like Lie and Voices. Anyway, the show sounds very
similar to the one I saw in Denver, and it is nice to have a perfect
    sounding version on CD.

The setlist is the standard one (no Perfect Strangers), and does include
the jazz extension to Take the Time and the Heavy Jam before The Mirror
(although it has changed since the Houston show - more keys and longer!).

Oh, the bonus tracks (Tears and Silent Man) are beautiful and the sound
quality couldn't be any better (sounds like a studio version to me).
I sure hope Acoustic Dreams sounds this good!

Anyway, I highly recommend this boot as the one boot to get from
the Awake tour. Simply put, I can't find any flaws.

    Cheers,
    Jim
