hi all,
just found out that Joe's got official web site now it's at
http://www.satriani.com
it's kinda cool but they are still working on most of the stuff. the
bad thing is he is not touring the U.S. for at least the next two months
and the site does not say anything about U.S. dates.
as for DT....the guitarists wve picked up ACOS does JP do this when
every one is doing that cromatic crazeness??

This subject came up some time ago. Cassandra was the daughter
of King Priam of Troy. I did a few searches of the Greek classics
archived at MIT, searching for both "Cassandra" and "fleeting"
but failed to find the exact phrase. I believe someone else
posted the source, or at least why the phrase came to be. It
probably came from some classic poem alluding to the stories of
Troy. I believe I've heard the phrase before DT's reference, but
I'm not sure. Hmm. I guess that didn't help too much.

I have yet to read through YJ #1027, so sorry if some of this stuff has
already been commented on.
To Michael Bradley:
I identified that opening, drawn-out holler in "Bombay Vindaloo" a while
back. If you watch the Simpsons you will know who I'm talking about when I
say it is BARNEY!! Really, just imagine his inebriated self at a Dream
Theater concert, only screaming instead of belching.
Also, I have a comment on what you wrote about Scarred. Yes, the song is
drum-complex, and that could definitely be a reason it was not played on
the Awake tour. But...
Has anyone ever thought of that poor guy who had to learn mountains of
material mere months (many much m's) before Dream Theater started their
grand tour? His name was Derek Sherinian. He learned at an inhuman pace,
unless he was so much of a fan of DT's work BEFORE getting into the band
that he could already play all of Kevin's material.
Perhaps "Scarred" was asking a little too much of our friend Derek. He DID
learn a TON of stuff in so short a time, and I respect him for that
achievement. I think the main reason "Scarred" wasn't on the tour was
because they could only cram so much music into Derek in so short a time,
so there might have been a "What's one song? Besides, if we skip this one,
it will give ALL of us a break considering how long and complex it is."
attitude among the band members. They avoid pushing too much on him, and
at the same time don't have to play through it every night.
Ok, I take that one part back, one song is A LOT because obviously every
fan in the world noticed, but you have to give Derek a pat on the back for
learning the eight songs he did from "Awake." This reminds me of all the
Ytsejammers who complained about Derek missing some of his cues and
whatnot during the Awake tour. Give me a break! Give HIM a break!
----------
To Mike Rappazzo:
It was I who paralleled "The Silent Man" with the Oedipus Rex story. I
will try to re-post what I wrote so long ago, if I can find it. Wow,
someone noticed AND remembered something I wrote...
----------
To All: (random comments regarding my posting about "Slow Motion")
1. I received quite a few e-mails inquiring about it.
2. Yes, it is a real song despite the fact that all Ytsejammers do not
have a bootleg of it and it isn't on a discography anywhere.
3. Has anyone else ever heard of this song?
4. I will post the tab of "Petrucci's Ladder" soon. This is a definite
scale, and of course I made up that name. I name lots of licks and
techniques because it helps me to better remember them, as opposed to
calling something "Paul Gilbert 1.4"
5. To those I wrote back to, I take back what I said because my brain was
not functioning. Pay no attention to what I wrote. Your e-mails woke me up
to something I had completely forgotten.
6. I will have more to post in a few days if I vehemently address what I'm
thinking *right* *now*. And I WILL get on it right now because the 'Jams
have been good to me. I have this peculiar feeling that a few folks will
be ytse, ytse interested. Yes, I'll post alllll about it... This silenzio
will be broken...

I saw DT do Bombay Vindaloo in Dallas the second time I saw them (it was
outdoors at Dallas City Limits a club in Dallas of course. I've seen DT
two other times here in Dallas (indoors) but they didn't cover Bombay
Vindaloo on those occasions.

Except for PMU I agree with you on all the above Matt.
2.)
To Mike Bahr:
Thanks for looking up John 3:16, and posting it in the Y-Jam. I hope
you weren't the only one who looked it up. James Garrett probably did
if he couldn't remember it by heart.
3.)
Did you guys/girls catch the post of the interview with J. Labrie? I
not telling you I told you so, that's not appropriate. But I did state
in a previous Y-jam about using profanity in the studio and how DT was
an intellectual band with a progressive bent and that I thought they
were above that. I'm was blessed/blown away to here James's comments on
why they changed mercy f... to sympathy. How bout the rest of you>. If
you missed it (the interview with James) write me and I'll send it to
you. It is not complete but it has enough for me.

Aaahhhhh... Nice long 'Jams...
----------
To Robert Quezada:
I second the motion. I appreciate Mike Bahr's statements. Not that I mind
reading anyone's long posts nor do I mind writing them, because this is
still a 30,000-60,000-characters-per-digest mailing list that takes me a
long time to read, so one long post doesn't make any difference to me. If
you get it as a digest, you read through it with all the other opinions in
this ocean and swim on. If you get the posts one by one, you can zap the
big ones as as they enter your mailbox. Either way I don't see why it's
such a big deal.
----------
To Warren:
I found your "asshole" post to be about as disturbing as the first time I
listened to "Good Friends And A Bottle Of Pills" by Pantera. Perhaps you
meant for it to relate to the song with all your talk of headaches and
Tylenol... (yes I laughed)
----------
To Mike Bahr:
You see, the thing about my humor is that I usually weave it into what I
happen to be saying at the time. You, oh Jesty One, have opted for a
served-on-a-silver-platter routine. That last joke was, to quote good old
Ross Perot, "HI-larious!" but I am going to assume you have erased the
word "subtle" from your Ytsejam Guide To Normal Humorous Postings. :)
(hmmm...who said he was normal in the first place?)
----------
On Outdoor Places:
Were some of you talking about that huge outdoor stage surrounded by
gigantic walls of orange and tan rock? I've seen it in many videos, namely
Firehouse's "All She Wrote." What's the name of it?
----------
On the Petrucci-Clinic postings: (no, I wasn't there)
CHOPIN'S FUCKING ETUDE #2???!!!!! Did I ever mention how every time I hear
John Petrucci play something I haven't heard him play before I am
absolutely blown away?! Really, the solo of "To Live Forever" hit me after
Awake, then it was a recording of "Barfbag," then it was the Live In Tokyo
Video's extended solo to "To Live Forever," then it was "Moon Bubbles,"
then it was a solo-spot from a 1987 instrumental show, etc. Now this guy
is playing CHOPIN?!?!
I can believe it, but I can't imagine it. Okay, I can try to imagine it,
but gracious me...
----------
To WildKoba:
HAHA!! "Miracle" and "Sleeper!" Too perfect! Write that to Michael Kizer
and ask for a special-request late mail-in. Petrucci would surely get a
kick out of it. As for his wife, it sounds like she's got enough kicks to
worry about.

Graham--
What are you thinking? How can you even accuse DT of selling out. Do
you think that Portnoy and Petrucci book all their gigs? They have a record
company and a management company. If both these people don't feel that UK
shows will be profitable, then they won't let DT do them. I don't think DT is
large enough to pressure the record company into letting them do what they
want.
If you're angry, then all the UK DT fans need to let East/West Records
know how they feel and that they will pay to see their favorite band. Don't
bash the band for something that is out of their hands.

True, Brian took a stab at The Crimson Sunrise in Jam #1000, but not all
of what he posted was correct. In one instance, there is an interval of
a tritone which Brian transcribed as a Perfect 4th!
The ACOS TAB Project seems like a novel idea, but I think you'll have to
take into account inaccuracies from untrained ears. Not a particular
slam on anyone, but if most of the guitar TAB i've seen posted to the net
to date is any indication of people's general transcription skills, well,
I suggest you wait until the sheet music comes out. ;')

2. What is this Acoustic Dreams CD? What is on it and can I still get it?

Message-ID: <m0t3kVd-00006AC@donews.cts.com>
The more I listen to the studio version of ACOS, the more I realize
why I've always liked Dream Theater. I'll admit to being a bit taken
back by the difference between it and the one on SUBCON, but I was
thinking maybe that is one reason why Petrucci hates boots. To him
it is not a perfect product until it is done in the studio. To get
used to an unfinished product probably upsets him. The result is
dissatisfaction with what they do or could have done, when the studio
version is *exactly* what they wanted done having time to think about
it. I'm not against boots, but without a boot of ACOS, I never would
have been taken back.
The part I really miss is the neoclassical part near the end of
SUBCON. Maybe they took it out to put it in another song on the
upcoming album--maybe Metropolis II? When has DT ever backed away
from such a cool riff?! They must not have included it for a good
reason such as this.
THANK YOU DREAM THEATER FOR GIVING US THIS TREASURE!!

Just for the record, short songs aren't necessarily bad. If you don't
believe me, check out _As The World_ by Echolyn or _Octopus_ by Gentle
Giant. With the exception of the last tune on the Echolyn, all the tunes
are about 5 minutes or less. They're all very well done, and pack a lot of
progressiveness into a short time!

Message-ID: <199510131841.LAA07121@atlas.earthlink.net>
There is a Cassandra in Greek mythology. She was given the power of prophecy
by the god Apollo, but when she wouldn't do him, he told everybody not to
believe her even though she was always right. She and Agamemnon were killed
by Clytemnestra and Aegisthus. Her name is usually used to mean any prophet
of doom, like those poeple who say the world is going to end next week. Then
again, maybe it's just some old girlfriend.
"Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" becomes a pretty cool line. Most of the
song before, he is talking about some sort of personal doom. But then he
says that maybe he is just being like Cassandra, telling of a doom that is
not going to take place. The ironic part is that the original Cassandra was
always right.
I hope this helps.

In ytsejam 1028 Graham Borland mentioned the lack of Dream Theater shows in the
UK, claiming that they had already sold out.
Back in March this year there were plans to do a full UK tour, which was
reduced to one show at the London Forum (which as you might guess, was amazing
(incidentally was this the only gig that had John Petrucci's guitar tech.
working the wah pedal during one of his solos, enabling John to roam around the
stage?)) (sorry about all the brackets). From what I've read in the fanzine
Images and Words, they had problems with promoters, which meant that they
couldn't do any other dates without making a massive loss, and that, rather than
refusing to do small venues, was the reason for only doing one gig. Any other
'jammers have more info on this?
Yours dreaming acoustically,
Martin Hayter

Well, based on the praise O.T. got from people on this list, I went
and picked up "Strangitude". Man, this is some cool stuff... I will
definately have to check out some other titles of theirs, is their
latest CD "Abouressense" (or something like that) and is it in the
same vain as "Strangitude"?
I also picked up the new Satriani CD... Yes it is a little different
that his earlier stuff (slightly more laid back and jazzy, I guess),
but it is definately Satch and his soulful playing... but I guess I'm
biased because I have always liked his stuff since his "first"
self-titled CD. 8^)

Message-ID: <m0t3lBe-00007ZC@donews.cts.com>
I was a bit concerned to hear there may be different Petrucci guitars
floating around so I called Ibanez and this is what they told me.
*None* of the JPM100s are made in America. This guy told me they are
all made in Japan. The deal is that they are selling 100 in the
states and another 100 outside the states. So if what this guy
told me is correct, even if you got hold of a Japanese version it
would not matter since it is the same as the US version.
Any of you who deal with Ibanez, maybe you can verify this.
Play on,

Subject: The ACOS TAB Project (repost)
Message-ID: <m0t3mYL-00008CC@donews.cts.com>
Here is the complete TAB for ACOS....
I wish! Seriously, if a couple of us guitarists would do a little
work, we could TAB the whole thing out easily. Here is what I suggest.
Interested persons let me know.
The ACOS TAB Project
--------------------
Brian Cox has already started transcribing the beginning of ACOS as
posted in YtseJam #1000. I have worked out some of Carpe Diem. I propose
that interested guitarists would be assigned a particular section of the
song to transcribe. If there are more than 7 interested, we can assign
more to each section or hardest sections or split up each section. Imagine
how quickly we can tab this thing out. Afterwards, we email each of our
transcriptions to others for checking. After debate and corrections, we
have a near perfect transcription (maybe even send it to Petrucci?).
The final TAB will be available for everyone.
Interested? Email Brandon Vaughn at edleader@uwf.cc.uwf.edu for info.

This is in reference to to the person that asked about bands that have
self-titled albums and songs, whether they were on the same album or another
album. I can think of three bands, besides what has already been mentioned,
that include a self-titled song on a self-titled album.
Damn Yankees: with the great Ted Nugent and Tommy Shaw (Styx) on
guitars.
RTZ: former Boston members Brad Delp and Barry Goudreau have a song
called 'Return To Zero', which is what RTZ stands for. (the
song rocks, good album!)
Bad Company: Seems kind of obvious after you think about it!!
Keith
(the only person on this list that doesn't seem to have some kind of
sig.!!!!!)
PS: Please, if anyone has it, give me some ticket info for the DT show in CT.

* We have officially broken the '100' mark, with 120 letters so far... way
* to go!
* Once I compile all of these, I will probably make an ASCII version
* available to everybody on the Jam, if that's cool with the people who
* sent in submissions (let me know)...
Note: This Friday (Oct. 13) is the submission deadline so if you
want to be included in this project hurry and send them in... I
will try to include "late" letters as well, but I need to get this
thing done so definately, positively no more submissions after
Monday (Oct. 16).... maybe. 8^)
* BTW, I keep sending this message because I want to be sure that
* everyone has a chance to send in a message...
I will now begin accepting personal messages to be included in the
thank you letter that we will send to DT for putting out ACOS (and for
thanking us in the liner notes :).. So go ahead and type up your
message to DT and send them to ME PERSONALLY (not the list), I will
compile all of them into a booklet format, print them and send them to
DT's management (more details as I get close to finishing it). Send
your submissions to:
mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com
put 'DTTYL' in the subject so I don't miss your email
and include your name, city, state, country and email address...
I would like to put a DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS, let's say
Oct 13th... that gives everyone a couple of weeks to do it.
Also, if someone has the DT logo or other artwork in a format that I
can use (PC/Windows) please let me know... this should preferably be
black and white line art type stuff or true type fonts...
Any questions, comments, suggestions, etc. send 'em my way...
