In ytsejam 1037, Edd Ballinger asked about a DT comp. You're right, :75 is
NOT enough time. I made a compilation tape to listen to in the car. It had to
be a :110. Any shorter length was too short. Track listing as follows.

    side one: side two
the ytse jam under a glass
    moon
    afterlife 6:00
    take the time Surrounded
    (marquee cd)
(demo version on silent man single) the mirror
to live forever (tokyo vid) lie
(my favorite JP solo) a change of seasons
    (1995 ep)
a fortune in lies (tokyo vid) (I don't have the
subcon version yet, so this pull me under
                                                   might change)
    metropolis pt. I
    wait for sleep

I worked on the length of the tape for over an hour, and I couldn't get it
    any shorter than this.

Someone said something about operation mindcrime as the concept album of the
90's, Since this record/cd was released in 1988, I don't know if it would
qualify as a 90's record. Although, as for the 80's, it definitely ranks as
one of if not the best.

*This is in answer to the question "Who is Cassandra?"

    James Garrett, excellent comment:
<<There is a Cassandra in Greek mythology. She was given the power of prophecy
by the god Apollo, but when she wouldn't do him, he told everybody not to
believe her even though she was always right.>>

Lisa Gaunt, don't feel silly--this is where I got my post from!
<< I feel kind of silly using my first post on the 'Jam to discuss
Cassandra, but hey, I'm an English major with a soft spot for Greek and
Roman writings and Virgil in particular. :)
So, anyway, I remember Cassandra from the first part of _The
    Oresteia_: Agamemnon, by Aeschylus.>>

I posted something on this topic many months ago (I think I am the post
that everyone has been referring to--the one that was mentioned before).
I am a Classics major, so I love these kind of topics. Here is the
    original post of mine:

<<This is going to be an answer to the question. It is VERY interesting
and kind-of long, but read on please. This could open a great debate and
what not. As a Classics major, this is very interesting to me, and
    hopefully to you!

In Ytsejam #821, Chris Caminiti wrote:

<<Anyway, does anyone know who Petrucci is referring to in the
line "Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" in Voices? Is it biblical or
literature-ical? I didn't know if it was some reference to a famous book
    I didn't know about. . . I'm still young, you know ;)>>

I was wondering if anyone was going to ask this question! There was a
thread just recently going around about the interpretation of A Mind
Beside Itself. I have heard the name Cassandra before, so I looked it up.
I came up with something very interesting, but I just never really got
around to it. Now that someone has asked, I will tell all you Y-Jammers
    what I have found.

Cassandra is the name of a "slave" girl that Agamemnon (ancient Greek
literature) brought back from the Trojan War. I read this story called
the Oresteria by Aeschylus. It is the story of the return, betrayal, and
death of Agamemnon. The story continues with the death of Clytaemnestra
and Aegisthus by the hand of Orestes. He killed them for their
deceitfulness and murder of his father, Agamemnon. The story continues
    on, but . . .

Anyway, Cassandra is able to see the future because it is said that Apollo
"lives" inside her. So she is able to see both the near death of
Agamemnon and herself. She goes in to try and warn Agamemnon, but is
killed by either Clytaemnestra or Aegisthus (it is unclear in the book).
These are the lines in the book that Cassandra gives before she dies.

(talking to a leader who is trying to get her to flee from her own death)

Cassandra: No escape, my friends, not now.

Leader: But the last hour should be savored.

****Cassandra: My time has come. Little to gain from flight.

Leader: You're brave, believe me, full of a gallant heart.

Cassandra: Only the wretched go with praise like that.

Cassandra was going to stay and try to save Agamemnon when no one else
would--even at the cost of her own life.

What does this mean for the song?

Someone during this thread gave the idea that it was about someone trying
to deal with another lover beside his WIFE. (Sorry I don't remember who
this was.) I think it has something to deal with a crises in the mind of
    someone.

I think it is interesting. In the beginning of the song it is ". . . HE
used to say to me . . ." Then the song goes on a few lines later, ". . .
SHE used to say to me . . ." I think this person with the old thread may
have been correct. There is a love [marriage] of these two people.
However, the man in the relationship is either 1) having an affair 2)
thinking of having an affair 3) going to leave his wife 4) or is
contemplating killing his wife or 5) a combination of any of these. The
rest of the song is his trying to decide what to do--thinking in his mind.
However, it is driving him crazy--the pick up in the feeling of the song
    coincides.

Know when he says "Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting" he thinks that he
is going run from the death of his wife (maybe it even was that he had
someone try to kill his lover and now what he had done is driving him
crazy). All he wants is his sanity back.

I think that in the end he finds out that he must decide himself--he is on
his own. He knows there is no one--no "Messiah" to help him.

The fade into The Silent Man is the continuation of his thoughts. Now he
has come either to a decision or has completely lost his mind. What does
The Silent Man mean? I'm not sure. I think the man just decides to
wallow in his own actions and misery.

Well, I hope this answered your question--and then some. Sorry for the
length, but I just started and just kept on going. But it was
    interesting--RIGHT?

    Thanks for stickin' around!

    Later,

    Nypsie

P.S. I wonder if John is even into ancient Greek/Roman Literature?>>

Thanks for the time, and sorry for the length.

    A couple questions..

    1) Which is better, _Lost in the Sky_ or _The Dance of Eternity_, as far
       quality goes?

    2) I've seen this question posed before but don't recall a response.. How
do you pronounce 'ytsejam'? I find myself saying y-t-s-e-jam,
because, the way it looks like it'd be pronounced 'itseejam' or
'itsuhjam' and both of those sound pretty gay.

Anyways, I have Acoustic Dreams disc #195 reserved and still haven't
received it. I feel sorry for you guys in the 400's.. :)

Hey, what's the deal with this? A previous post said that we should send
$10 to "Mike" at El-N-Gee and he'd send us the tickets. Is that still
the case or do we have to go through Strawberrie's? Anybody know?

Either way, I'll be there! And I'd also be interested in meeting with
fellow 'jammers beforehand. I live in Mass., so pick a meeting place
that's somewhat easy to find (I know Northern CT real well, but I'll get
    lost below Hartford!)

To all you Canadian ytse-jammers: Send in requests to the Power 30 for Dream
Theater! Their e-mail address is "power30@muchmusic.com". This is easy, if
we flood them with enough requests, they'll HAVE to play at least SOME Dream
Theater (maybe even on a semi-regular basis)! Send multiple requests! They DO read them all, I've sent 2 requests in the past (with some additional critisism for not playing good, talented bands), and they've replied to both of them.

Heck, even if you're in the US and don't get Much Music, e-mail them anyway, pretending you do. Say where you're from too, and give a little information
about yourself - they want that (to give Teresa Roncon something to actually
read, I guess), and the chances are better that they'll be more likely play
requests from someone outside of Canada so they can brag about how many US
vieweres they have (well, it's possible anyway).

I've seen them play Lie twice in the past half a year or so, and even managed to catch PMU, but that's it. I suppose the TSM video (if they'd have it) wouldn't exactly be Power 30 material, nor would "Another Day" I guess, but bug them to play TTT or CiAW ... even though the edited versions of TTT, PMU, and even Lie (without that amazing second solo) suck compared to the full length versions (I think PMU really loses it's effect without that long intro, especially since the intro to PMU was the first DT song I heard, and that was what really got me hooked), that's the only way we can popularize DT up here!

And believe me, DT is apparantly not that popular here! I've gone into several music stores and checked their top x charts, and not seen ACOS on there at all, whereas other jammers have seen it as high as 5. I suppose it all depends on what store you go to.

(Oh, BTW, to any other Toronto 'jammers: if any you have a white "Awake" t-shirt, go to U of T Scarborough campus, and take the York Mills bus in the morning, please e-mail me, 'cause I saw you, but was getting off the bus at the time and was late as it is, so didn't have time to stop and say anything - it's the first time I've seen anyone with a DT shirt though, other than at the Queensryche show)

    1) Rush 2) Metallica 3) Fates Warning 4) Queensryche 5) Scorpions (at least they used to be...)

    6) too much stuff to list. (btw, *do* check out Cynic, if you can get past the death-metal vocals, which I don't think are all that bad because they fit in with the music well).

As much as I hate to admit it, I like the single off their new album. If I see it used, I might just give it a listen (I never thought I'd be saying this !>|>

    NYC Shows:

Is Ticketmaster selling tickets for the show at the Malibu (28th)? I browsed their web page and failed to find any info. I do have the Malibu number that someone posted. Can I get tickets over the phone directly, or should we just chance getting tickets at the door? I might be enlisting the help of some NYC 'jammers for directions as I've never been to NYC, and we might be driving from upstate, but I'm not sure yet...

What the hell? Quit your band for a week or so! We can't be the only ones coming out from the left side of the country for the Dec. shows!

You wanna know about Eric Johnson? Well, he is usually touring. He has a very busy schedule. He was working on an album for the last two years but due to disputes with the record label, it will never be released. Seems they wanted him to release it and he didn't have it "perfected" yet. So they dropped his contract. I don't know if he plans on trying to get another contract. Last I heard he was pretty upset about the whole deal and swore off the record making. He is still making new songs but looks as if the only way you will ever hear them is if you go and see him in concert. Who knows, maybe he will open his own recording company. Wouldn't be the first time an artist did that.

    Fellow Jammers,

I've heard a lot about this ACOS guitar tablature project. I think it's cool that there is a group of jammers that are willing to take the time (no pun intended) to sit down and trancribe a musical piece of this power. I'm interested in creating a corresponding tab "book" for us basses. I've noticed that the DT tablatures on the net exclude other's and my favorite instrument. I propose that a group of bassists (bassers?) get together and put down some nice tabs, breaking it up into sections like the guitarists have been doing. I know that John Myung uses a 6-string bass now, and I only have a 4-string, so anybody with 5 or 6 string bass that could help would be greatly appreciated. I'm not as good as I'd like to be at transcribing. I'm working on "Crimson Sunrise" right now. When I get a substantial part of it done, I'd like some people to look through it. So if there are any bass players out there that are interested, please e-mail me or reply here on the ytse-jam. -Jeff

    HEy all... "first time caller"....

i'm glad that I'm finally getting ytsejam. However, the last few issues I got seems to be screwing up my terminal typeset - it switches from vt100 to some unknown... anybody out there know why?????

As for 5 fave groups (besides DT)...

1.) Rush 2.) Living Colour 3.) Kings X 4.) Kansas (old, not new) 5.) Alice In Chains

And as for guitarists, well (in no order here)

-Jerry Cantrell -Joe Satriani -John Petrucci -Vernon Reid -Eddie Van Halen

But, you know, Dream Theater is talented EVERYWHERE. How about some candidates for other musicians?

    For example, on bass...

-Les Claypool -Geddy Lee -John Myung (of course) -John Pattiucci (sp?) -Victor Wooten

    How about percussion?

-Bill Bruford -William Calhoun -Neal Peart -Mike Portnoy (duh) -Dave Weckl

Admittedly, keys aren't as broad a subject, but there is serious talent to be found...

-Chick Corea -Bruce Hornsby (he can play, folks) -Keith Emerson -Kevin Moore -Rick Wakeman

I know, I know, where is Derek... well, until I hear him eitehr play or write with DT, I will reserve judgement. He does a good job on ACOS, but that stuff was written by Kevin, n'est pas?

AS for vocals... You know, I don't really listen to music for "vocals" Yes, I love LaBrie's voice. I also like the vocals of Corey Glover, Layne Stayley, and Jon Anderson. But, outside of that...

One more thing... would anyone know where I can get my hands on written music and/or tab for Space Dye Vest? I love that song!

Thanks! John Yuan E-mail:joyst2@pitt.edu "And if I claim to be a wise man, it surely means that I don't know..." -Kansas, "Carry On Wayward Son"

On oct. 7, I saw Page/Plant show in Mountain View, CA. Excellent show! Much better than the 5/20 San Jose show. They played only Led Zeppelin songs, no covers or solo stuff whatsoever. The reason I bring it up is because Blind Melon opened up. I haven't seen such a shitty band since I saw David Lee Roth in July 94. These guys aren't even good enough to listen to DT, let alone judge their music. Did you ever notice Blnd Melon and Bowel Movement have the seme initials. Just a coincidence? You be the judge.

Speaking of DT, am I the only that thinks that James' voice sounds a little like the singer in Stryper: Michael Sweet? I'm not saying they're an identical match; but I do think there's a definite similarity.

These are just my opinions. They are not gospel. Opposing views are welcomed, flames are not.

    Attention Boston area ytsejammers:

KITARO is playing at Symphony Hall on Thursday, Oct. 19th!! Anyone interested? Skadz? Buck? Marc? Brent? Allen? Unfortunately, I have recently dipped way into the BayBank reserve credit and find myself wondering how the hell I'm going to pay it off, let alone shell out some more cash to see a show (even if it's Kitaro).

    Top five non-DT bands:

Pantera (BALLS!) Fates Steve Morse Band Rush Testament (back when they had Alex, anyway)

That thing with "Rage against the damn machine head" (or something like that) was friggin' hilarious! (I liked it, anyway...)

Allright -- enough with meaningless post #213!!

    Later, 'jammers!

ok...i posted my fave bands a few days or so ago, but now we're talking guitarists? wow...

i close my eyes and here goes....

    1) randy rhoads- the reason i picked up the guitar (anyone seen the remastered ozzy albums recently? picked up "diary") 2) jimi- the reason i play today. 3) david gilmour- reason #2 4) satch- i thought he was fading, but his new album suggests otherwise. 4a) vai- they might as well go together. 5) zappa- probably one of the stranger ones 6) chris degarmo- perhaps best songwriter on the list 7) john petrucci- he'd be here somewhere 8) prince- underrated b/c of his weirdness, but man, can he play 9) david rhodes (peter gabriel)- brilliant 10) zakk wylde- indirectly taught me how to squeal

while we're at itm how about some drummers

    1) neil peart- not only can he play, but he writes too!! bonus! 2) portnoy- frightens me when i see/hear him. 3) bruford- innovation 4) will calhoun (living colour)- see #1 5) manu katche- best feel. perhaps best taste. 6) carl palmer- brutal 7) chester thompson- zappa ace in the 70s. 8) roger taylor- a singer as well. 9) mitch mitchell 10) colaiuta- zappa, sting. kicks ass wherever he goes.

so there...more fuel to this fire. see ya/ david

Did I see a poll? I'm sure I did.. Gottabeapartgottabeapart..

Never mind my ramblings, I just woke up. Here are my top 5 non-DT bands, which I assume are somewhat heavier than people expect from a Dream Theater fan.. (of course, if put on the list, DT would be number 1)

    1. Sentenced 2. Cradle of Filth 3. Pantera 4. Carcass 5. Amorphis or Life of Agony or Manowar.. I dunno.

By the way, the ACOS EP is gradually dropping off the Finnish top 40 album chart.. I guess it'll still hang in there for a week or two but the peak has been passed.. I still love every second of the EP (even the steam train effect :)) though.

Yet another entry into the top 5 non-DT bands/artists:

    1) Frank Zappa--most versatile, most prolific, most influential 2) Rush-- when 2112 came out, no other band could touch them 3) Queensryche--I just like them 4) King Diamond--I can't get over the CD "Them," one of the better concept albums 5) Metallica

HM: Pink Floyd, Kansas, Jethro Tull, Led Zepplin, Chick Corea, Spyro Gyra, Alan Holdsworth, Bartok, Living Color, Iron Maiden, the list goes on. Next week the top 5 may change.

Have we just jumped back in time?

All of a sudden, everyone is posting lists of their favourite bands.

This happened a few months ago, and I thought (hoped) that once everyone had got it out of their system, then they wouldn't feel the need to start all over again.

These posts are all the same anyway. 99% of these lists consist of Steve Vai, Rush, Pink Floyd, etc.

Anyway, the new Iron Maiden album is absolutely crap. It is by far the worst CD I have ever bought. And I'm a dedicated Maiden fan.

In Ytsejam 1038 Brandon asked: >This question is directed at musicians, but open to everyone, so you can >skip it if you want. I was wondering what kind of setups each of you >played and how you came about playing them.

Well, it's not much, and I'm not in a band, but I still am a guitarist.

Guitars: Squire Strat 92 (black w/white pickguard and humbucker) Ovation Ultra 89 (grey/green acoustic/electric)

Amp: Marshall Lead 30watt solid state amp (my footstool ;)

Effects: BOSS MT-2 Metal Zone (distortion pedal.. this rules!) DOD Stereo Chorus (I only have one amp, but it sounds good) Cry Baby Wah Pedal (same as John I think ;) Horizon Guitar Tuner (my ear sucks!)

It's all cheap crap (cept for the Ovation :) but it's what I have. I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years now... Getting better all the time. Come to #guitar on IRC, I'm "kylania".
