Of course I have Believer's Dimensions. I bought my copy a day
after the album was released in August '93. The Trilogy of Knowledge
is indeed a brilliant piece of music, but the rest of the album is
not that great.

Dan,
Maybe you should give the KJ album another listen. At first I
didn't like it much either, but it grew on me and now it's one of my
favorite albums. BTW, what's wrong with 80's metal? Besides,
there's some 90's influence in there too.
When you listen to Torman Maxt, at first you will be disappointed
too. But like KJ, it has to grow on you. There's a lot of acoustic
guitar stuff here, but with some really great solos and I love the
singer's voice (remember an 80's speed band called Realm?)

Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that old debate again:)
c'mon we play instruments and every different instrument is unique. It will
be really unfair to the people who have been practicing 14 hours a day for
10 years to learn that their fav instrument sucks right? I play guitar but
I'm totally blown away seeing my buddy playing Moonlight Sonata even if he's
doing it while watching the notes. it's the music that counts and if you don't
like the guys who learned from tabs than you too don't get to watch vdos.
I spend five years learning listening through my crappy tape player before
I knew there was a thing called tab or guitar magazines and had to wait for
some friend or somebody coming from tthe States or England or wherever and
wish that they'ld remember to bring one of those magazines besides candy.
so shut the fuck up and listen and practice!

I was going to respond to Graham last week, then lost the thread.
Even though we did not get a full tour, we must remember that both
LATM and 'Ronnie Scotts' were in the UK. Fanzine readers were able
to get FREE tickets for Ronnie Scotts.
Also remember that Europe is not so far away. I went there twice
this year to see Dream Theater, driving back immediately both from
the Ghent(att. 1500) and Saarbruecken (1500) shows, getting to see
them 3 times. It is not too expensive if you take night time
ferries.
I think that AWAKE did not sell well enough in the UK for the
promoters to guarantee DT sufficient financial returns for
a UK tour. They can't do it for nothing !
wah pedal - the guitar tech certainly did it at Dusseldorf (5000).

Mainly a good reason is because there are so many packages that come
through the USPS. I work for the USPS in the West Windsor (NJ)
remote encoding center and I can tell you that a good amount of time
is dealt with mail from people who don't address mail correctly,
don't write legibly, or don't use the ZIP+4 which is used to speed up
mail sorting, etc.
Don't you EVER insult my IQ. Of course I'm pissed off. I'm sorry I
don't encode the mail any faster for it to please you, but I encode
an average of 1500 mailpieces per hour at over 12850 keystrokes
per hour. You probably couldn't even get that high. No one I
work with has gotten a faster speed than that.

When I attended the MindCrime tour (really the Empire tour) I got a seat
right next to the sound board. A woman was sitting on the platform with
the sound techs. She looked familiar to me but I couldn't place her. I
kept looking at her hoping something would click ... but it didn't.
Then about halfway through the show (needle lies?) I looked over and she
was gone.
Then when they did Mary, it came to me. The screens showed video
of this woman singing the duet with Jeff. It was obviously live video and
she was singing. It was most certainly Mary.
I read an interview with Scott about this much later and in that interview
he confirmed that it was indeed Mary. She toured with the band. Her real
name was mentioned but I don't remember what it was.
So Jeff's voice wasn't pitch altered. It was a real woman.
BTW - I went super-prompt-critical when I first heard the subject part
(what are you doing?) because I thought it sounded exactly like Mary.
It's not, but it's still neat...

Well, I guess the great Cynic has died :(. The guys will continue under
the name of PORTAL, and a female singer has been added. The band
will also get rid of the death grunt (at last !) and it won't be as metal as
it used to be. I read somewhere that their demo sounded like Sinead
O'Connor, so I guess Cynic is really dead !
What a sad mail, sorry for the lack of DT stuff.
By the way, I also like Watchtower, Savatage, Marillion (at least their
first few albums), Kansas, Saga, Counting Crows.......
Does anyone know what happened to the guys from Watchtower ?
I guess this is goodbye.....parting is such sweet sorrow....

Nice thread you're trying to start. This could be interesting and
enlightening.
I am a bassist, so here goes:
Carvin LB76 6-string bass (active electronics)
Carvin LB74 4-string (active and around 5 years old)
Carvin ProBass 500 watt head (again, 4 yrs. old)
Hartke XL410 (no tweeter) 4 x 10" cabinet
Hartke XL215 2 x 15" cabinet
Nade 201XL wireless system
That's it pretty simple, really. The head gives me a lot of different tones,
but you have to work at it to get them. The cabinets are great, but I almost
have to use them together. The four 10 distorts with too many low frequencies
at higher volumes and the two 15 has no top end at all.

I don't have the article here with me, but I vivdly remeber Blind Melon
bashing Dream Theater. For those of you that are familiar with Guitar for
the Practicing Musician, it was in the column titled "In the Listening
Room." GFTPM played them Pull Me Under and they totally hated it. Some of
the comments I remember was "These guys have big hair," "The guitarist has
a rig with a million lights on it when he plays," and "that playing is just
plain stupid." They also went on to bash Satraini. The song "Always With
Me" or something like that, they said it sounded like the theme from
Baywatch. They said some other nasty things too, which I can't remember.
As or my favorite bands/guitarists in no particular order (except for
number 1 on both lists):

Yes. Here's the Basic Kevin Moore Update for you:
Yes, Kevin has moved to Los Angeles permanently now after living in New
Mexico for a year.
Yes, Kevin has a crewcut now. No, I'm NOT kidding, I've seen it! :) He's
wearing little John Lennonesque glasses too! 8)
Yes, Kevin recorded several demos w/guitarist Rich Kern, but they aren't
working together anymore. (Last word was that Rich was moving to Seattle.)
No, Kevin doesn't have a record deal yet. Consequently, no, Kevin doesn't
have a CD coming out anytime soon. ;)
Yes, Kevin is still being managed by Round Table (DT's management), so any
autograph or fan club queries should be directed towards them.
Yes, Kevin is working w/Mark Zonder of Fates Warning on his new demos and
they have three songs completed so far.
No, Kevin has not joined Fates Warning, Mark is just playing drums on his
demos to give them a more professional sound. :) (I knew you were going to
ask that question. :)
Yes, Kevin sings all the lead vocals on his demos, and is playing bass/keys
as well.
Yes, there is a KM demo dubbing project in operation on this mailing list and
if you want more information, just e-mail me.

Kevin's a big Tori fan, so he just sampled her voice from "Song For Eric" and
used it on a couple of songs. The entire explanation of how this came about
is _really_ long & convoluted, and it may annoy some people on the list to
see it posted here yet again (including me <G>), so if anyone's _really_
interested in hearing it, just e-mail me & I'll forward it to you privately.
But no, if anyone was wondering, Kevin & Tori have never met or worked
together or anything like that, but Tori has heard Kevin's rendition of "Song
For Eric" and she loves it. :)

Well I won't go into detail, but bands in the Christian realm of 80s
metal like Stryper (who I actually like to some extent), Barren
Cross, Whitecross, Bloodgood, etc really get on my nerves nowadays.
It was so cheesy!!! I guess it kinda fit in with Poison, Warrant,
Winger, Motley Crue, AC/DC, etc of the "mainstream" side of that
genre...

I didn't hear much...It had Rex Carrol's guitar (one of the only good
parts of the album) which on some songs sounded sooooo 80s. Jimi
Bennet's vocals got on my nerves, but that's just my opinion. And
Rob and Tim are still stuck in the 80's...check out Oz and Tim's new
band SIN DIZZY, it's totally 80s rock...they're around the San
Bernardino area now (that's where I used to live...FYI)...

Yes, I have all of Tourniquet, Deliverance, Stryper, Believer,
Betrayal, Saviour Machine (great prog-art rock), Enslaved (not the
one from Norway), Bride (not really metal), Precious Death (GC and KX
influenced!!!), and Detritus...plus many other bands...
