ok to all those from out of state or wherever going to see dt at the malibu,
here are some directions......
however you can, get to either the long island expressway (aka, "the longest
parking lot in the world", or 495), and go to the meadowbrook parkway south
(towards jones beach). if you'd like, you can take the grand central parkway
(which becomes the northern state parkway) to exit 31 (i think), which is
also the meadowbrook.
anyway, once you're on the mbrook, go south for awhile, and the last exit
before jones beach (there should be signs for the toll booths beforehand),
there's an exit for the loop parkway, which takes you to lido beach/long
beach/point lookout. take that. you should be heading west, cross a bridge,
and at the first light you get to, make a right. about a 1/4 mile down, there
will be another light, and if you look to your left, you will see a sign that
says "malibu - dec. 28- dream theater." make a left, and park, then go in,
and have a blast. there is PLENTY of parking.
there. now, if only someone could do the same for getting to el-n-gee's.....
last time dt played at malibu, there were still tickets the day before and
day of (got mine day before). i think it's $15 at the door. and yes, i heard
ticket master was selling them, too, but as i hear there's no info on it, who
knows.....
hope the directions help. thanks. david

Hi...just read YTSEJAM 1040 and thought of a couple not necessarily DT
questions. I had some questions and comments about some of the groups showing
up on peoples top 5 lists that I hope my fellow 'jammers can help me with.
Question one: How is Saga's album Generation 13? I have never listened
to Saga and I was wondering if this was a good one to start with. Who do
they sound similar to?
Question two: How is King Diamond's new Album the Spider's Lulliby? I loved
Them and anyone who wants a to pick up a great concept album really
should get that one. Excellent music, creative vocals, and a real fun
ride through the whole CD!
Comment one: Whomever said they didn't like new Kansas, have they
listened to the Freaks of Nature CD just released this year? I recommend it.
It really brings Kansas back to some of their roots with a hard 90's edge.
Good stuff, lots of violin again, only one or two songs that I consider duds.
Thanks!
Andy

Here's a question for you. If, say, when DT's new album comes out next
summer, I could get it for you for $8 + shipping, brand spanking new,
even if it might not be the day it comes out (mail, ya know?), would
you be interested?
I'm not really sure if that's a great estimate, but right now I've asked
on the net for advice on starting my own mail order company. If it is
feasible, I would like to start a prog-focused retail company, at the
lowest overhead possible.
Because I am not interested in making a profit, that cuts my prices enough
that I think I can do some good. What do you think? Utopia CDs?
Oh, and to make up for the fluffiness of that post, another fluffy post:
Our poll-taker does not have a valid internet address, but my fave non-DT
bands are Anglagard, Gentle Giant, Queensryche, Marillion, Phish in that
order--today.

Jammers, I finally got my copy of "Awake in Japan '95" the other day. It's awesome. One hour and 50 minutes of DT Live! Myung's fret work is amazing, especially during "metropolis". There is an added bonus of DT backstage after the show giving a very brief interview with a Japanese TV host. The concert was taped right after the earthquake hit in Japan and they give 15 seconds of silence for the victims and then go right into "Silent Man". The only bad thing about the tape is an annoying buzzing sound during the parts of the concert that are relatively quiet (between songs, etc.). However, while the band is playing the buzzing is not audible.

I've had two confirmed reports about this, so don't think I'd make something up like this. It's very sad to hear, considering Kevin MOore is one of my favorite musicians of all time.
I heard on a local college station that Kevin Moore has a rather advanced case of testicular cancer. I called up one of my friends who knows Kevin Moore's mother, and he confirmed it. "It's sadly true.." he told me. As far as details go, all I know is that he has an 85% chance of recovery. If no recovery ensues, who knows how long he'll last.
Maybe we should all round up a get well card for our favorite keyboardist?

I'll start with drummers, since they are near and dear to my own heart (ie. I play):
1. Tommy Lee (Motley Crue)- Perfect blend of technical ability, feel, showmanship, and above all, ATTITUDE. This guy is the ultimate rock drummer. When you've played on a set that rode ABOVE an arena crowd and then bungee jumped into the audience, what's left to do? Set yourself on fire? Too late. Nikki Sixx did that twelve years ago.
2. Mike Portnoy- Go figure.
3. Rikki Rockket (Poison)- Highly underrated. Rather simplistic, but an excellent use of grace notes. Also heavy on showmanship and attitude. Check out the intro "Native Tongue" from the album by the same name. He duets with Sheila E. (of Prince fame).
4. Terry Bozzio- Boldy going where no drummer has gone before. I have one of his new home videos and it is absolutely amazing. Only problem is that you need a set as big as Terry's to do that shit.
5. Ticco Torres (Bon Jovi)- Probably the most underrated drummer in the business. This guy creates drum parts that more than just fit the beat. They add to the song. Think about how different "I'll Be There For You" would be without him. And if you want chops, check out "Homebound Train" (New Jersey) and "Something To Believe In" (These Days).
Up And Coming: Mike M#@##$%, the new guy in Extreme.
Guitarists:
1. Eddie Van Halen- the master. 2. John P.- the heir apparent 3. Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme)- can't wait for the solo album. 4. Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi)- very fluid player. 5. Stevie Blaze (Lillian Axe)- cool classical influences.
Up And Coming: Blues Saraceno, new guy in Poison.
Bassists: 1. Billy Shehann(sp?) (Mr. Big)- no holds barred. 2. John M.- laid back. Let's the music stand on its own 3. David Bell- a former ytsejammer
Vocals:
1. Sebastian Bach (Skid Row)- The most dynamic voice ever. 2. Jani Lane (Warrant)- what personality. Very underrated. 3. Steven Tyler (Aerosmith)- The most unique voice out there. 4. Brett Michaels (Poison)- minimal range, but it's not the size of the boat.... 5. James Labrie- Need I say more?
Up And Coming: Whoever my vocalist will be in my band.

Hey there jammers - I just wanted to clear up some discussion I've heard about the instrumental, "Barfbag" that Dream Theater supposedly plays on LoS. I attended the National Guitar Summer Workshop two summer ago when - you guessed it - John Petrucci was a guest clinician (nahh, I didn't go to see him, though ;) . Anyways, he played "Barfbag" with a sequencer or DAT and explained that he wrote it on the barfbag on his honeymoon flight. It was a really cool, bluesy, fusiony, "petrucci" type song in C minor that lasted about 4 1/2 to 5 minutes. I don't believe the improv instrumental jam on the Lords CD is "Barfbag", or else it's a totally different version. The few of you who I distributed the Petrucci clinic video to last semester should be able to confirm/reject this. It's been a while since I've written, so I was just DYING to be able to say something. Now that you know this, you should all be able to sleep just a little bit easier tonight, and I can go to bed feeling like I accomplished a true good deed. Boy am I lonely . . .
P.S. I can finally play the Erotomania 5-tuplet crazy guitar thing up to speed. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.P.S. Thank God for metronomes =) |\ Chris | \ |\ \ Faith | \ \ Hope ## \ | Love ### \| ## | | ## ### ##

1. Rush 2. Blue Oyster Cult 3. Metallica 4. Dead Can Dance 5. Mutha's Day Out
Of course, this list betrays the fact that I know some of the bands listed above, or I've just met them and found them to be kind and personable. :) Queensryche didn't quite make the list because I was disappointed with PROMISED LAND, plus tickets for the show here were IMO way too high. A list of honorable mentions would be way too long but I'll toss in Anthrax (met 'em, too), Joe Satriani, Steve Morse/Kansas, Sisters of Mercy, Marillion, Echolyn, Fate's Warning and Type O Negative. Favorite 'current' band, new-to-me: Korn.

To whoever it was that criticized the idea of posting favorite bands other than DT: what do you care? There are plenty of messages on the Jam I'm not interested in. You know how I solve that frightful dilemma? I skip them. It isn't that hard. I have only been on the list for about a month and I imagine there are other people who are new as well, and interested in such information, even if it has been done before. Other than a few basic guidelines, I wasn't aware that there were any rules to what could and could not be posted and discussed. I was under the impression that we could talk about whatever we wanted. This is a DT mailing list, but (dare I say) there is more to live than DT (this is not a criticism of the band, simply a statement of perspective.) Well, now that I have that out of my system... Here are bands which, though not my favorite, are ones I enjoy listening to who are definitely not considered mainstream: Mindfunk, 24-7 Spyz, Kyuss, I Mother Earth, Souls At Zero, Royal Jelly, Michael Manring, Awful Truth, Atomic Opera, Mike Keneally (Zappa fans, check this out), Vinne Moore, plus many more. Personally, I find it quite interesting to see what other DT fans listen to. Especially those bands which are less obvious than Rush, Yes, etc.

Dear Fellow Ytsejammers,
I am very old to the board, but I do not post frequently. I find the poll of the 5 favorite bands to be a very interesting string and I thought I would respond. . . . . So Here Goes . . . . My 5 Favorite Bands not including Dream Theater are
1. Pink Floyd 2. Rush 3. Van Halen 4. Led Zeppelin 5. Metallica
I would also include one Joe Satriani in that list, but I was unsure if this was the type of artist desired in the list, so I left him out. Just a note on his new album, I purchased it when it was released and I was a little bit disapointed with the album. If you bought it or if you have anything to say about it, E-Mail me at

Also, any Kansas fans out there. I just bought there Greatest Hits album and I am incredibly impressed with their style. If anyone has any info or is willing to send me info about the band or about each album and which album to purchase please E-mail me at the above address.

For those who have asked about it, I believe that the correct pronunciation of "ytse jam" is
YIT-see jam
I am almost 100% sure I have heard James LaBrie pronounce it this way, probably on the Live in Tokyo video.

I just have a few things to say here:
1) Is there anything that I or we can do to show our disaproval for this ignorant display for Blind Mellon (or as I like that before mentioned Bland Lemon). I mean can we write to somewhere, or can we compile a list of letters to send to these guys. Damn, it just irritates me that style and content along with music knowledge are thought of as "bad guitar playing." I mean anyone and their dog can go out and play fifth chords, say a few words, and make money. However, it takes a lot of talent, practice, sweat, and desire to be able to play well.
For instance, my brother just started playing guitar (I hope I was never that bad :) ). I am hoping that learning just how difficult and beautiful the guitar is. Maybe he will see that sounds can be made from a guitar that consist of more than just two or three notes. As for a whole effects rack lighting up--what about Steve Vai--that's all that needs to be said here.
2) This brings me to my next point--***Martin Spain***, if you think that guitar is so easy, you obviously have never tried to play, and I mean really play the guitar! Guitar is a very difficult beauty. Hell, look at classical guitarist. The music that they can play is mind-blowing. I can only hope that some day I can have such an ability to play guitar in such a manner. As I said, any ass can play the guitar. Yet, for someone to play guitar like SRV, Hendreix, or JP (and many others that I don't have time to mention) it takes real talent. These guys play with such smoothness and grace that it almost makes me cry, and yes at times I do. If you read the inlay on SRV "The Sky is Crying" his band members say that if you just listen to the music, it is like he is right there playing in from of you (sorry for no direct quote--if you have the opportunity to read that inlay, please do). It takes more than just knowing scales to be able to play like that. It is hard, sometimes, to listen to SRV or Hendreix and think about what was lost--this can't be said about all guitarists. Short story: I was in a band once where one of the guitarists said that the bassest had it easy. I got very pissed at this. Bass is a different instrument than guitar--in some ways. Look at some of the bassists out there now--including JM. That is not an easy art either. Neither are the drums. To all of this, our band Dream Theater can prove.
As for the fact of guitarists asking for help or using someone elses transcriptions. That makes no difference!! We all depend on others for musical guiedence. If we think that we know all about music, and that there is nothing left to learn, then there is no point in playing because you will never learn the first thing of music. The immortal guitarists who lived and died have shown us that there is a wealth of knowledge to share. If other scientists of our time didn't look, learn, and use the information that previous scientists had discovered, we would never have had this mailing list. LEARING IS A COMPILING OF PREVIOUSLY LEARNED INFORMATION!! What others play we must learn form, whether if we like it or not--that gives us our own unique style! Copying isn't a style--if I can play all DT songs note for note, that only shows that I can play note-for-note. To play with my OWN feeling, that is where power comes form. If you think you are better because you can copy, Mr. Martin Spain, then you are sorely mistaking.
Sorry for such a long post (I swore I never would do it), but this is a very soft spot for me. Thinking of the great guitarists of ALL time being shunned as such really makes me cry.
Thanks,
Ryan Benedict

came home from school for the weekend, and went to get my dt tickets for the malibu (12/18). lucky me and a friend got tickets #1-4!! which means that not many folks know about it. the malibu's # is (516)432-1600, and tix are @12.50 unlike the lucky person from wisconsin who has his ct ticket reserved, i don't think that the malibu reserves tickets. however, i heard that they would go on sale on ticketmaster (don't know when, however). can anyone please forward any info regarding the ct gig on the 27th.....i must've missed it, but i really wanna know. thanks. and if the "jimmy" dude in binghamton (what a coincidence!) sees this, please email me, since i am here as well, and looking for someone to point me in the direction of forming some sort of band before i go nuts up here. thank you all, and peace. david

Well I was ready to list my five favorites when I realized that I can't even think or five bands I'm into anymore since the day I discovered DT. I don't know if that's good or bad, but DT have raised my standarts so high that nothing seems to be good enough anymore. But since I have already typed in 4.5 lines, let me still try to think of something do that this doesn't go to waste. I guess if I had a five disk CD changer, aside from DT and classical cd's I'd throw in cds by the following:
(out of order)
Aria - A Russian HM band that I doubt anyone has ever heard of on this list and if anyone did E-mail me ASAP.
Van Halen - The first release and 1984. Don't you think that 'Drop a Dead Leg'(not sure of the correct name) is kind of progressive? In any case I really like those two albums and that particular song.
Extreme - 3 sides to every story. Nuno can make you cry with one stroke of a pick. Almost like John.
Some Ozzy, some Maiden.
Guitarists in order:
John, by far, so far you can't see or hear. Nuno old Malmsteen - don't laugh, he does one thing but he does it well. The 2 Aria axeman in 'Geroi Asfalta' Van Halen - I like his rythm work more than solo. Solo is not bad either however. Marty Friedman
In the drum, bass and keyboard department DT members certainly are at the top of the list. Honorable mention are V.P. Darrel(Pantera), the guy who played drums on Bruce Dickinson's Balls to Picasso and the Megadeth drummer (suddenly forgot his name). And I absolutely love all the bass work on all the Aria albums.
Good one, isn't it?
