Hi all, a few things to let you all know about.

To Zach Gemmill and others who requested high numbered Acoustic
Dreams... don't worry, you won't have to wait until I send out ALL the
numbers up till then. I'm sending out discs in the order I got the mail,
so if you asked for #350 but sent in your mail before I got the order
    that received #200, then I'll send out #198, #199, #350, then #200. Make
    sense?

Illiterate? Write today for free help.

I just noticed that it's already past the date when I said I'd
start taking orders for When Dream and Today Unite. It's still pretty
early in the process, but I think it's probably safe to go ahead and
begin the new ordering. I'll have an update on it for you before long, I
imagine. I'll say this: I still don't expect the CD to be out before
around Christmastime, so I don't mind in the least if people decide to
wait a bit before sending the order along.

Brian Kirk, if you could drop me a line, I'd appreciate it...

OK so for the benefit of those just tuning in, I still have
around 50 copies of Acoustic Dreams unreserved, and around 40 copies of
Cygnus still to sell, and I'm going to begin accepting pre-orders for
When Dream and Today Unite. I have already received some orders from
international buyers who needed to pay ahead of time; all these are now
considered good and valid. I am:

            Mike Bahr - WDATU
            3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
            Chandler, AZ 85224

I have been doing some mathematical figurations with the pricing
for WDATU. The post office raised rates for out-of-country. It used to
cost $3.75 to send to France, Germany, the UK, etc. Now it costs $5.00 to
do the same. Oddly enough, Scandinavia is still $3.75. Japan and
Australia remain $6-7 to send. The local rate rose a pinch from $.95 to
$1.24 when the recent stamp increase went into effect.

However! It's been a bit cheaper to produce lately so the
domestic postage difference will be largely offset. I therefore think (as
I count beans here) that the following pricing will work:

            WDATU CD (each) $25
            Postage USA free
            Postage Canada add $1
            Postage Europe add $3
            Postage Jpn/Aus add $4
Each additional WDATU - you do NOT need to add postage.

That should work. I only have to pay the postage once and it
costs the same to mail one CD as three. So if you ordered 1 copy of WDATU
from Germany, it would cost $28, but each copy AFTER that would be $25
    each, so 2 for $53, 3 for $78, etc.

The upcoming Antiquities CD will be a run of 500 like AD, so it
will probably be priced the same again. WDATU will begin as a run of 500
numbered/signed, and if demand continues, I'll produce 500 more, but
never more than 1000 total. The Public Affection CD will likely be
produced in a large quantity to start and I'd _really_ like to push the
price down to $20... I'll see what I can do.

Sign in an Oregon auto dealership: "Why go somewhere else to be
cheated when you can come here instead?" (true story)

Wooohoo, guitar rig talk. Right up my alley. I use an Ibanez S470. Most
people I know who want to play Ibanez choose to go with the RG series, but
I totally give the S series a high reccomendation. It's a much different
style guitar than what's out there now. It has a very slim body-hugging
mahogany body which produces warm tones. It's very light, and has a
different neck than the RG series. It's much rounder and more "full" feeling
on your palm, but it still keeps the fingerboard feeling lightning fast
(like most Ibanez's). It's the 1992 model, so it's different then the
current S470, which I don't like as much. The new S470 has a cheaper floyd
tremelo, also they changed the neck and it doesn't have black hardware
anymore. As a guitar that listed for $900 I'm very happy with it, especially
since I paid only half list ar $450. However, as evident with many guitar's
not priced well over $1000, the pickups could definitely stand to be
improved. I already ordered a Steve's special for the neck position, I
haven't decided what to put in the bridge.

As for a processor, it depends what you're looking for. If you're looking
for all digital effects without a preamp I strongly reccomend the Rocktron
Intellifex. For a preamp the Marshall JMP-1 is pretty good, as is the
Mesa/Boogie Triaxis. You can also pick up a ADA MP-1 for dirt cheap these
days which is a great value if you're on a tighter budget. If you want both
preamp/digital then go with the Digitech GSP2101. It's strongest competitor
is the ART SGX Express which was from my ears designed with quantity and not
quality as far as its sounds go.

Since about 99% of the posts in this digest were top 5 non-dt bands..I feel
    it necessary to add mine...

Metallica, Rush, Megadeth (old), Queensryche, and Fates Warning

    Well,

When I thought about doing this project, I didn't think it would
start a mini-debate over music and transcribing! Here is an update
on the project and some comments on the debate.

Those so far who have an interest in transcribing ACOS (including me)
    have initially numbered: 5
I was hoping to get at least 7 (have a person on each section), so
if anybody else wants to jump on board, here is your chance.
Everybody who participates will get credit for the product. Some who
have responded have already transcribed some parts. Others
have access to 7-string guitars. So, we are getting some good
    components on board.

If you are interested in being a transcriber of ACOS, email me
    directly: Brandon Vaughn at edleader@uwf.cc.uwf.edu

    Accuracy and TAB
    ----------------

Actual music notation is always best in some sense. However, the
only way I know of to transport this over the Internet is MIDI. Not
everyone has access to MIDI. TAB seems to be the easiest to use
    email.
Also, I believe TAB to be easier to *initially* decipher than
regular music. How can you notate guitar nuiances like pick scrapes,
artificial harmonics, tapping, and so on, without making the actual
    music look like crap?!
The best of both worlds would be both music (to get the rhythms) and
TAB, but there is that email problem again....(not to mention, the
only program I know of to do this is Finale)

Will this be 100% accurate? No way. But it will be a lot more
accurate than just one person's transcription. Petrucci's would
be the only one that is dead on. Anybody have his phone number?
I am a perfectionist, and while I may not be as good of a player
as others on the Jam, I can usually detect musical errors. I will
not finalize the product until I feel it is accurate. Suggestions
and corrections will always be welcome. By the way....

    Final Checkers
    --------------

For those who don't want to be involved, who don't want to take the
time to do it, or who just think of themselves as _higher_ than this,
consider being a final checker in the end. I don't mind. The more
input and checking of this we have, the better it is.

    Why do this?
    ------------

There has been a question about just waiting until an official
transcription is put out by some music company or magazine. Well,
I would not suggest this or undertake this (am I crazy?) if I thought
it would get published. But, how many EPs have they put out music for?
Not many. What if an offical transcription surfaces? Well, I guess
we've lost, but not really. The experience is still good. Not to
mention the fact--what if it is never officially put out?

So there it is folks, like it or lump it.

I thought I would get on the band wagon.

Top bands (not including solo artists like Eric Johnson who is amazing)

    * DT

    * Rush
    * Racer X (check out "Extreme Volume 1")
    * Dokken/Lynch Mob
    * Annihilator (check out "Set the World On Fire" & "Brain Dance")
    * Queen

    Honorable mention: Queensrych

Could you tell I'm into guitar/bass players and drummers.

For Guitarists that like Satch and Vai. Have you checked out Jennifer
Batten...she is incredible and even more impressive live!

I not noticed any Yngwie advocates compare him to Eric Johnson. Wouldn't
most of you agree that you can like both (I have all their cd's) but Eric is
a better guitar player than Yngwie? Whether he is faster is a close one.

I didn't put Saviour Machine on my top 5 non-DT bands, but I love
their stuff. They have another album Saviour Machine II, which is
only available at the time as a German import. It is much slower
than the Intense Record's debut, but it is also more progressive.
They have a full-time pianist, and the 13 "movements" are very
beautifully arranged; though the album is not as heavy as the
    debut...

Well, here goes (I'm not currently in a band or anything, just noodling 8^)

Carvin DC125 (neck thru body, strat shape, one humbucker, and a way cool Kahler
tremelo <when the bar is in the "down" position the bridge becomes fixed, but
when you pull the bar "up" it is now free floating... stays in tune too>)

Carvin V220 (old, very "heavy metal" styled body, but has 2 humbuckers with coil
splitters and out of phase switches (i.e., lots o' different sounds), regular
    Kahler tremelo)

Applesauce (er... Applause) acoustic... the low end Ovation company, but not bad
for the $80 I spent on it 10 years ago... I really need a good acoustic, but hte
choices out there are staggering... what's the word on the Ibanez models (I was
looking at the Charvels before... I'm searching in the $500 or so range)..

Carvin XV212 100 watt amp (2 12" Celestions and their 100 watt head in combo
format) Great clean tone, and separate overdrive channel (although my power
tubes are on the way out....)

Digitech DSP128 (The original one (ie, old)... multieffects unit... delay,
reverb, chorus, eq, etc... Not too bad, but some of the newer models are WAY
    cool...

Dunlap "Jimi Hendrix" Wah (eh, it's OK), ZOOM distortion pedal (very cool
sounds), and some other assorted pedals and nonsense....

Well personally, I think that STP is one of the best bands out right
now. I CANNOT listen to a song like "Still Remains" or "Kitchenware and
Candybars (or whatever it is)" and not feel moved. There's great stuff
    here.

Anyway, I just got kinda upset seeing people bash on thier own loved
bands. Sorry people, I've go no regrets (other than Trixter perhaps).

On another note, has anyone out there got the new David Bowie album. I
got it and thought it was Ok. Any more edjucated opinions?

As David Frost used to say, 'Hello, good evening and welcome'.
So you want to know my five favourite bands? Well, here they are, in no
particular order. This list represents what I listen most at the moment (incl.
DT of course), and tends to change slowly but surely every few months.

    Tiamat
    Smashing Pumpkins
    Monster Magnet
    Paradise Lost
    Loreena Mckennit (who's she?)

Now for the special mention category:

Der Ring der Niebelungen by Richard Wagner (let's face it, this guy wrote
    heavy metal operas)
    Any symphony by Haydn
Old Genesis (up to The Lamb)
Old Yes (up to Topographic Oceans)
    The Clash
    The Sex Pistols
    The Who
    Pennywise
    Kyuss
    Therapy?
    Bob Marley
Songs from the Monty Python films

Enough wierd stuff there to keep a shrink busy for a few weeks.

And now my 2 cents-worth about Blind Melon: I saw them live recently (as
a support band for Kyuss and Soundgarden), and I can honestly say that I have
never seen such a bunch of undertalented, over-hyped, self-assured wankers
on a stage in my life. The albums may be OK, but as a stage act they (turn on
Butt-Head mode) "suck in ways that no other stuff has sucked before".

Flame me about the Smashing Pumpkins if you want, but I think they are great.
Does anybody else know Loreena McKennit? Let me know if you want any more
info about any of the bands listed.

    stay safe and happy listening

    Jammers,

Has anyone noticed that many of the "new" threads that have been posted
are ones that have been covered in the past.

    Examples:

    1) What are your five favorite bands

    2) If you had seventy-five minutes of time what DT songs would you choose
    to put on an album?
Of course, the last time it was mentioned was "What songs would
play for an alien (outer-space) if you want them to understand who
            DT was?"

Some things I guess just never die . . .

Hey if anyone out there knows what this Blind Mellon thing is (what
happened or the article it was mentioned in) could you post it. I am quit
curious as to how immature, uneducated, loser, power chord (fifth chord)
bands have to say when they feel threatened by real talent!

    Thank you,

    Ryan

The part in Mike Portnoy's drum solo in Live In Tokyo was the intro
of "By Demons Be Driven" by Pantera off the "Vulgar Display of Power"
    album.
About Blind Melon....The issue that they bashed DT in was Guitar
World w/Joe Satriani on the cover, and the title was"Shred Is
Dead........NOT!!!" I have the issue at home (I,m at college now) the
next time I go home I'll get it and tell everybody more about it.
Oh yeah here are my five favorite bands besides DT
    1.King's X
    2.King's X
    3.King's X
    4.King's X
    5.King's X
    oh yeah and King'sX
    Honorable Mention....you guessed it King's X

I just sent a message saying that the DT bashing by BM occured in a
Guitar World issue, then I realized that I was wrong, that was the
issue they bashed Nuno Bettencourt in, sorry for the mixup.
Even though I screwed up, Blind Melon still sucks.

What a cool name, YTSEDRUMMER. Hehe, well I'm one as well and after reading
the above, I'm dying to find out more about the video he mentions. Does
    anyone have anymore details?

As for this comment, I'm saying absolutely nothing.

Other than: How do you get a guitarist to turn down? Show him the music!

Sorry! Just a quick joke! :^>

The Silent Man (CD Single) : was this ever released in the U.K. and / or
does anyone know where I can lay my hands on a copy. I'm dying to get hold
of it cause it has the song Eve, on it which I haven't heard yet.

Chris Crowder wrote in YTSEJAM 1039:

    >P.S. does somebody know what's on the Lie single, and if they do, WHERE CAN I
    >GET ONE?!!!!!! Someone's got to know!

    Well the CD contains:

1.LIE (Edit) - A shorter (5:00) version of LIE with a cool drum intro.
2.SPACE-DYE-VEST - The same version as on Awake.
3.TO LIVE FOREVER - A studio version of this great song, which is on the Live in
                        Tokyo video and various bootlegs.
4.ANOTHER DAY (Live) - Recorded at the Marquee in London. Not on the LatM CD.

As to where you can get a copy, I don't know. It's not too hard to find in
the U.K. but I don't know about in the states.

And finally, does anyone know of a DT discussion group on IRC? It would
good to speak to fellow DT fans in real-time for a change!

    Thanks

    Edd Ballinger YTSEDRUMMER :^>

P.S. I think YTSEJAM should from now on be said in a high squeaky voice and
very quickly in a manner similar to that of James LaBrie on an Italian
bootleg that I can't quite remember the name of at the moment. If you've
heard it you'll know what I mean.

    Hey there jammers!

I've heard so much about Blind Melon bashing DT, I just have to
vent a little. What has happened to the music world, when technical
proficiency is looked down on? As rock and fusion guitarist, I encourage
all DT fans to check out some hard jazz. Like Charlie Hunter's "Bing Bing
Bing" album. He plays an 8-string guitar and does all the bass and guitar
parts at once! Basically, just keep practicing to be the best you can be
and people will soon get sick of all this out-of-tune guitar bullshit.
Jazz is the epitomy of feel and expression and you won't catch
ANYONE criticizing a jazz player for being "too good." Check it out guys.

About the thrash guitar breaks in Mike Portnoy's live solo, I think
they're a mix of Pantera and Slayer at different dates. Don't kill me for
saying this, but when I saw DT in New Haven, the roadie played the guitar
breaks. I was in the front row and I could see this fat guy sitting
offstage with JP's guitar playing the fills. He probably does it every
night so JP can take a break. Later all!
