    Fav Bands:
    1)Marillion/Qryche
    2)Tribal Tech
    3)Allan Holdsworth
    4)John Scofield
5)Any good pianist doing Chopin (girlfriend included)

Honorable mention- Zappa, Rush, any manifestation of the Dave Brubeck
quartet, Tool, Stravinsky and Terry Bozzio.

    Fav Non-Mike Drummers
1)Terry Bozzio (most drummers make up parts, Terry makes compositions)

    Couple things.

Jerry George: If you like Lifeson and Howe, check out Steve Hackett. Great
early Genesis guitarists, supposedly the first to use finger-tapping
extensively. Some really great classical-sounding Howe/Lifeson type stuff,
especially the acoustic solo "Horizons" on the album Foxtrot. Check out
Foxtrot and Selling England By the Pound. These, of course, are during the
    Peter Gabriel years. : )

Spain-dude: It's great that you can play a lot of Portnoy. But that just
makes you a second generation rip-off artist. (DT fans, don't curse me YET.
Keep reading) I'm sure most of you will agree that MP's solo (at least the
only one I've seen, on "Live in Tokyo") is pretty much based on Neil Peart's
solo. Especially the snare drum section, the windchime/bell tree interlude,
etc. The use of the guitar instantly reminded me of the programmed
"trumpet-like" parts near the end of Neil's solo. I am a huge Neil Peart
fan, and I also love MP. I shouldn't say "rip-off", that's not accurate.
The one thing in MP's solo that absolutely gives me chills is the pattern
between the jam-block and the cowbell, with the staggered double-bass
    pattern underneath it.

    Top 5 in no order:
    Rush
    Yes
    Queensryche
    Genesis
    King Crimson

HR:Pink Floyd (should be in my 5, but there's not enough room), Adrian
Belew, Bruce Hornsby, ELP, Asia, John Wetton, Earthworks

Does anyone know if the new Marillion album ("Afraid of Sunlight") is worth
getting? Their only album I've heard is "Brave", and LOVE it.

Where to start. I guess everyone is making lists, so why dont I jump on
    the bandwagon!

    Fav non-DT bands:

    1. Queensryche
    2.Fates Warning
3.Live (before they got huge because of that garbage called MTV)
    4.
    5. Van Halen

honorable mention: Rush, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Alice In Chains

    great newer bands:

    1. Sunny Day Real Estate (it's 'alternative', and the singing aint great,
but the music is sooooo cool)
    2. Our Lady Peace (Toronto guys, they ROCK. some of the coolest guitar
    sounds I've heard in non-progressive

                                   music)
    3. Type O Negative (not too new, but really cool, i saw them open for
    Queensryche, heavy, moody)

As far as guitarists go, someone mentioned Chris Duarte. He is a GREAT
blues/rock guy. I saw his band open for Buddy Guy, and I was blown away.

Does anyone else out there think that Carlos Santana is one of the
greatest? His tone is so warm and smooth, and his playing is unbelievable.
I reccomend it to anyone who respects great playing. Regardless of
musical style. Check out, 'Sacred Fire' - one of the most amazing live
    album ive ever heard.

    to take some getting used to, its real strange); Candlebox; White Zombie; Rush;
Faith No More; Jesus Jones; Smashing Pumpkins (anyone heard their new song?
Its great); Tool; Nirvana; Queensryche; NIN; Live (been listening to them since
    thier Mental Jewlery days, its wierd to hear them all over the radio now);

I have not posted for a while, so I have a lot to get off my chest.

First, how about the pronunciation of Ytsejam. I believe we all agreed
a few months ago that it should be YEET SEE JAM.

Second, here's some bands and artists I really enjoy. You'll see that I have
    very diverse musical tastes.

    1) Dream Theater (of course)
    2) KISS (grew up listening to them, and can't seem to shake that groove)
    3) Vanessa Willams (she has such an angelic voice)
    4) Toad the Wet Sprocket
    5) Al Jarreau (best male vocalist, hands down)
    6) Extreme
    7) Living Color (Their first album is a masterpiece)
    8) Fates Warning (thanks to you guys on the 'Jam, I've found another great
    band)
    9) Stan Kenton Orchestra (the most innovative big band of the big band era)
    10) Saga

To the guy who was asking about the relative quality of The DoE and Lost
in the Sky.... I think The DoE is significantly better. It almost sounds
like a professionally-recorded live album. I'd say it's close to Live at
the Marquee quality. Lost in the Sky is good, but does not have the
    dynamnic range that DoE has.

My Acoustic Dreams arrived yesterday (10/16). It's incredible. For those
of you who have not heard it yet, most tracks sound like studio tracks
that were recorded for a possible DT unplugged CD. They don't have gobs of
post-production effects, but they are definitely NOT the average
bootleg-quality tracks. Lifting Shadows off a Dream is my favorite. I
think I even like it better than the Awake version. GET THIS CD!

To Partha -- How about them Wildcats!!! Bet you were pretty shocked when
we came up and beat the Wolves in Ann Arbor. I know I was. Now, if we can
get through the rest of the year undefeated (which is quite a stretch, I
know), you guys have to beat OSU so NU can go to the Rose Bowl. Yep, I'm
from Columbus, but I definitely bleed purple and white, not scarlet and grey.

To Mike Bahr. Do you spend ALL your money on Magic cards? Shit, I've
spent probably over $200 on cards over the past year, but I don't have
half the cards you mention in your Magic tirades. So THAT'S where our
Subconscious and AD money is going -- to feed your Magic habit <g>!

    Whew! I feel better now.

    Hi Jammers,

I went to the Tampa Drum Expo this past Sunday featuring Mike Portnoy,
    Steve Smith, Sheila E, etc...
We met several drummers and handed out lots of flyers, so hopefully we'll
get a new drummer out of this.

What Mike Portnoy did: He gave a mini-clinic including: a drum solo, a
discussion of odd time signature and double bass (fills and rhythm),
improvisations over drum machine patterns, a performance of the 6:00
intro and the Metropolis middle section, and a performance of Erotomania
along with a DAT of the rest of the band.

I was amazed by this. He said that in the studio the band followed
him... and for this he was following the band following him... so he had
to anticipate what he did in the studio... He was not using a click
track and if you have not noticed, there are several tempo changes in
Erotomania... He nailed it! It was great...

AT the end of the day, every drummer returned to the stage for this
percussion/drum jam of death! An autograph signing followed... Mike
actually remembered INFERNO (he has a t-shirt) and he was thankful for
the ytsejam printouts I gave him. I gave him the one with my "Killing
Hand" parody in it (I think he'll get a kick out of it)...

Mike says "Hi" to everyone on the jam. He is extremely happy with the AD
cd and thanks Mike Bahr for his efforts on the project...

Portnoy's wife loves reading the ytsejam so keep printing them out and
giving them to Mike at his clinics....

A quick note to all Acoustic Dreams, Cygnus, WDATU buyers, etc.

Please don't email me asking what the status is on your order. If
you saw your name on the list, then I got your mail, everything is cool,
and as soon as I get to it in the list, and not a moment sooner, I'll be
sending your Cds out Pronto. Believe me when I say I want them all to be
sent and received as soon as possible, because it makes my job a LOT
easier when the work is already _done_. :)

The main problem with e-mail like this is that I usually sit
down and log on to find 100+ messages in my daily inbox, and a great deal
of them need to be addressed ASAP (reservations, since everyone wants a
chance, and address changes, that sort of thing) and "Did you send mine
yet? (envision whiny voice here: Well, when Wiiiiiiilll you send mine???)
Any chance you can send it early?"

I hope I don't seem like a jerk about this, I mean it sincerely
and I definitely don't want to ruffle any feathers, it's just that the
time I spend answering status mail, which includes looking it up on my
ledgers and so forth and can take 10-15 minutes for a single lookup under
some circumstances, takes away from the time I could be packing and/or
sending discs out to their intended owners.

Fun facts: The US postal service has an artificial limit on
parcels of larger than envelope size: I can only send two dozen at a
time. I sometimes circumvent this by bringing 24 in in the morning, and
24 in the evening (new shift) when I don't have classes or something that
prevents me from making the trip. But it averages out since it's closed
saturday and sunday. So more or less, I get 120 or so out every week.
Last week was a bit slow due to my having the flu, and I'm back up to
pace now. I don't know why the limit; I think it has mostly to do with
keeping clerks available for high-traffic service hours, since I
successfully took down a bundle of 45 packets during a dead afternoon
when the place was near deserted. Also consider that of each 24 packs a
day I take down, usually 14 are Acoustic Dreams and 10 are Cygnus. So
around 70 ADs go out a week, around 50 Cygnus. Adding WDATU to the mix
won't slow things down much because by then I will be all out of AD, and
    possibly Cygnus too.

I believe this was the response to a post by Martin where he JOKINGLY
argued about the superiority of drummers over guitarists. Thought
    Martin's post was amusing myself.

I always pronounce it "it's a jam". I kinda like that.

I don't think Blind Melon is one of the more popular bands out there.
The music they make pretty much guarantees that they won't be super
popular because it is so different from the norm. They hit it big
with No Rain, but not many of there songs are simple and catchy like
that. And as far as bashing fellow musicians, it seems to be
endemic, especially if this list is any indication. Not to mention
the bashing the "ignorant" general public takes. Oh, and if you look
at the covers of DT's CD's with their pictures, you will notice a lot
    of hair! :)

Favorite guitarists? I must have missed the poll that began this:

    1. Steve Morse
    2. Steve Howe
    3. Alex DeGrassi
    4. Nuno Bettencourt
    5. John Petrucci

Some others: Vito Bratta (anyone remember this guy? Love his solos)
Larry Coryell, Joe Satriani, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Johnson, B.B. King
    (in concert anyway).

Actually, I thought that the USPS charges just enough to barely
keep in the black, unless those ads are propoganda.

So you deal with idiots for customers; so do I. (I *always* use
my ZIP+4 on the return address and, if I know it, on the receiving
    address, too.

Sure I couldn't; you couldn't do my job either without skill and
    years of experience.

Is this an apology? I guess it is. Any organization that is
inefficient is so due to mis*management*. I apologize for insulting
    _you_ and/or your coworkers.

Cool - least favorites. I like that. My least favorites:

I&W - Pull Me Under (got me buying DT in first place, but the rest is
    even better), Another Day
Awake - Innocence faded, Space Dye Vest

Sorry to agree so much with you here, but maybe we have similar

Here's a good question. Since we've started a guitar rig setup, why not
expand it to all instruments. Keyboards, and drums. To give you an example,
    I'll include my kyeboard setup:

    Ensoniq TS-10
    Korg 05rw half space rack
Two dual foot switches: used to trigger sequencer in the TS-10, and trigger
patch selectors and for damper pedal effects on piano
    P.V. kb100 keyboard amplifier

The Korg is basically the brain of an 01W which is controlled by the
Ensoniq. Any other setups for keys, guitars or drums should be posted, I am
curious to know what all musicians are doing.

Oh, by the way, Blind melon don't deserve anything except for us DT fans
to piss on their instruments and sell them for the three cents that they're
worth. Hell, let's kill them, maybe we'll get away with it. O.J. did.

And now: for something completely different:

thi nking of having a little get together at my place of all Ytsejammers in
the NJ area who can get to Monmouth College. Nothing too fancy, (or loud, I
have roommates), but just to hang out and play DT. and check out bootlegs
that we have and stuff. Anyone interested email me at:
