Hi folks,
First of all, those of you up in arms about the whole Blind Melon
thing, why get so worked up? They feel differently about Dream Theater
than we do...so? I know a LOT of people that have heard DT and not liked
it (I know more non-DT fans than I do DT fans :); it's like any other
music in that it's not for everyone. Yeah, they expressed their distaste
for the music in a less than polite way. It's gonna happen. Deal with
it. Don't pout. Surely you've talked in a similar way about music that
you don't like; why can't Blind Melon? Because their opinions conflicted
with yours? I mean, I make fun of cock-rock stuff like Poison and
Warrant a lot, much like Blind Melon talked about DT. But I still
respect the right of cock-rock fans to like it, just as Blind Melon
stated at the end of the article (something like, "Don't get us wrong, we
have no problem with people liking this stuff. Just keep it away from
us."). So settle down. I recall a couple people applauding John
Petrucci for his graciousness when he heard about the article, why can't
some of you do the same? Threatening to boycott Blind Melon, grafitti
their tour bus, or piss on their instruments (??) sounds kinda childish
to me...
Okay, elsewhere in the news, if anybody's got the lyrics to
echolyn's As The World, could you PLEASE e-mail them to me, particularly,
"Never the Same"? I would be forever grateful; we have to make a chap
book for my Visual Thinking class, and if I don't use some of my own
work, I'd like to use echolyn. Don't go to any trouble; I'm just hoping
someone has it on file or something. I don't have time to write in to
the address in the CD and wait for the lyrics to arrive... :)
Something else: does anyone know yet who will be playing with DT for
the December tour dates? I guess if anyone knew, they would have posted
by now, but I couldn't resist asking. :)
Even more: Somebody was asking about the song parts in Mike
Portnoy's drum solos...well, the one he used for much of the I&W tour
(including the Live in Tokyo video) was Pantera's "By Demons Be Driven",
from their Vulgar Display of Power album. I'm not sure, but I think the
guitar parts used in the solo were right from the song; I could hear
Dimebag's distinctive sound. The only other song snippet that I know MP
used in his solo was on the Awake tour when he used Slayer's "Reign in
Blood" off the album of the same name. I thought that the guitar part
used in the solo was also taken right from the song, but I've seen other
people post otherwise, so I don't know. Mike's definitely interested in
heavy stuff like Slayer, Pantera, Machine Head (he was wearing a Machine
Head shirt when he and James were on Headbanger's Ball), Sepultura (he
was wearing Sepultura shorts when I met him :), etc.
I pronounce Ytsejam YIT-SEE-JAM. Mike Portnoy pronounces it
IT-SAY-JAM. That's all I know about it! I don't really see how it
matters, really...
DAEGIBATAUOTL? Oh, sorry, that stands for: Does Anyone Else Get
Irritated By All The Abbreviations Used On This List? :) I do. If you
wanna say something, say it. It takes longer to figure out how to
abbreviate the fucking thing than it does to actually type it (or
decipher it...). Dream Theater songs and albums and stuff I can
understand, but people really get carried away...
That's about it for now. Sorry for the long post, but not really.

yes, yes, yes. santana is an amazing guitarist, and listening to his music
is quite a different experience from that of DT or rush or whoever. the
rock and metal guys can shred and can play with feeling, but it can often
sound forced or contrived. i think carlos sounds the most natural of all,
since hendrix of course. no wonder he is always wearing a hendrix shirt.
his tone, his style, his technique, the feel, the fire and emotion can
just tear you apart. i only latched onto his stuff a few years back but
what an impact it has made on my listening habits and my guitar playing.
all i can say is: if you want to make the leap from that gtr-player's
syndrome, "the plateau", put down your guitar for a while and listen
to santana. you'll soon be driven to play better than ever. it worked
for me!
