What's this about requesting the song "Anybody Listening?" to MTV? Yes, I
love that song, but is there a video for it?

Allright, i'm from the U.K so don't take the piss. My top 5 non-DT
bands are as follows (not in any order as I can't work that out).

            1. Headswim
            2. Alice In Chains
            3. Queen
            4. Led Zeppelin
            5. Status Quo

    1. Chad Smith - He's a complete nutter, but plays really smart stuff
    2. Terry Bozzio - Simply one of the most creative & innovative drummers about
    3. Rick Allen - Respect to him for carrying on playing after his accident
    4. Vinnie Paul - The speed at which he can play...!
    5. Alex Van Halen - Underrated player, I feel

Does anybody know what kit set-up Mike P. is playing at the moment? I
know he signed an endorsement deal with Mapex, but have no idea what
configuration he plays. Can anyone help?

Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and throw in my top five non Dream
    Theater bands:

    1. Cowboy Junkies (all the sincere meaning music is suppose to have)
    2. Queensryche (most of you already know everything about them)
    3. Fates Warning (ditto)
    4. 10,000 maniacs (hip clash of upbeat tunes and cynical lyrics)
    5. Dokken (smooth, crunching melodic metal the way it is suppose to be.
Not so much the new one though)

    Cheers

sound it out backwards. That's how I do it. "Yeet-seh-jam."

    > You walk into a room to find only a dead man, shot through the head, a

Surely you are talking about Bicycle playing cards. This dead man was
playing cards with a no-shit kinda poker player. Somehow, it was
discovered that this lying cheat, who now lies dead, was using an "extra"
card, possibly a fifth ace, making 53 cards instead of the usual 52 found
in a normal deck. The other fellow, being a no-shit poker player, shot the
    lying cheat through the head.

Yes, and the standard "Far Beyond Driven" by Pantera seems to do the trick
    without a prescription.

    To JennieBear:

Tangerine Dream and the Art Of Noise? Saayyyy, you're even cooler than I
    thought you were.

Anyway, Art Of Noise was around LONG before "alternative" was even a
category. They began a class of their own, and as far as I'm concerned are
still in it. How many different versions of "Beat Box" do you have? :)

I see you listed a few classical composers. Please refer to my Respighi
review in an earlier 'Jam. You will most definitely not be disappointed,
especially if you like ambient sounds a la Enya & Tangerine Dream.

By the way, are you available in movie-theaters yet? And what's with this
new lime-flavored JennieBear? It's terrible! Bring back the watermelon!

Actually, you could do that movement LaBrie does onstage to the line from
Take The Time, "...and craft new changes with my eyes." People who have
seen DT live will know what I'm tlaking about. He makes a fist but raises
his index and middle finger to form a "v," then he pulls this "v" across
his eye. Don't even bother with a handshake, just do this motion. :)

Or, as a mating-call sort of deal, you could holler "YEETSAYJAAAM!" as
similarly to James as you can manage. I guarantee that people will walk
over to you. They might not have ever heard James scream this, heck, they
may not even be Dream Theater fans, but they WILL approach you and/or
engage in conversation with you. Works every time.

I asked Dave who accompanied me to Ronnie Scott's to comment on
post concering the difference between the purported complete

parked outside RS's, we commented on it one entering. Dave wrote
the review which you may have seen on the jam or in I&W.

             RE: Re: Ronnie Scotts

             1) Obviously they recorded the material multitracked - who
doesn't ? So in order to get a clean intro to Perfect Strangers
at the mixing stage it would be simplicity itself - Derek's
organ would be DI'ed into the mixing desk and could be isolated,
removing James' voice. This doesn't imply any re-recording of
vocal parts. I remember that James said his "This could be
...interesting" comment before Funeral For A Friend and again
before Perfect Strangers. When putting the EP together they could
have used either, wherever it sounded good.

             2) I'd be surprised if they band felt it necessary to record a new
vocal line in studio, as I share your opinion that he sounded
great on the day. Indeed, I suspect the choice of material for the
EP refelects what the band think came off best. For instance,
"Easter" would be out because it sounded a little hesitant and
Steve Hogarth slightly fluffed a keyboard line, yet I remember
thinking on the night that the Led Zep medley was superlatively
             performed.

BTW Dave also saw Page and Plant and commented that it took two
guitarists to cover the work that JohnP did at Ronnie Scotts.

well just last nite my wife was channel surfing and i said stop! when i
heard two notes of God Save the Queen by Sex Pistols. real punk (not
green day or whatever) has its place in music history. it helped to shape
styles of heavy metal. hell, iron maiden and motorhead claimed to have
been influenced somewhat by the punk movement. hey, deep down inside i
know that there are way too many ungifted people out there posing as
musicians and becoming filthy rich but if the poor souls who love their
music wanna fork over their $$ to them, fine. but i won't, and that's
    life. OK....?

I know how you feel. I was just informed that MP would be at Tampa the
day before and I did not have a ride to get there. BTW, the event was
not only MP but a host of other drummers. I talked to a guy on campus
and he said that the best drummer was the guy from Journey.

The drum fest is an annual event, so maybe I'll get to go next year.

    Later,

Give eMpTyV a piece of your mind!!

OPERATION: REVOLUTION is an e-mail campaign to let MTV know what we
    think!!

On Halloween Day (October 31, of course) we're joining together to
protest the programming policies of MTV. Some of our beef includes:

    - not enough ROCK videos (more generally--not enough of a genre mix)

    - too many gameshows

    - Cancellation of "HEADBANGERS BALL"

    - not enough ROCK videos

Let's e-mail our beef to MTV!!!

Tell them what you'd like to see. Tell them what you don't like to see.

Tell them why you channel-surf past MTV. Tell them why you watch MTV.

    But remember these things:

    1) OPERATION: REVOLUTION is huge, and we must keep things legit to be

taken seriously. Only one letter per person, please.

    2) Profane, vulgar, or derogatory letters will only hurt our cause. We

should keep our letters clean & specific.

On HALLOWEEN DAY, please join the rest of us and send your letters &

requests for the return of Headbanger's Ball and/or ROCK videos to:

    mtvmail@aol.com -or- feedback@mtv.com -or- mtvnews@mtv.com

Please send letters to only one of these addresses. (Refer to #1 above.)

The overall volume of mail is important.

SPREAD THE WORD TO YOUR FRIENDS. If you can, get them to write in, too.

*** REMEMBER: Halloween is THE day for OPERATION: REVOLUTION ***

Let's make a real statement with this mailing campaign.

     Hi there!

I just wanted to say that I think it's cool to be on a list with
people who know so much about music and who like so much of the
    same stuff that I like!

I was surprised at the mentions of Jason Becker as one the five
fave non-DT bands. Does anyone know any more about the
forthcoming album? I know Michael Lee Firkins plays some of the
tunes, and there'll be some of Jason's older demo stuff on it. I
also know it's been finished already. Surely Sharpnel are not
waiting for poor Jason to die before they release it, milking his
death as it were? Speaking of death: Does anyone know if Jason is
actually still alive? I've written to his P.O. Box *and* the
address on "Perpetual Burn" for about four years new (every Xmas
and his every birthday, always with return address, and never got
anything back. Then again, I guess that not getting them back
with a post office stamp along the lines of "addressee not known
at this address" is good news, don't you agree?

To the guy listening to Bjork: I like Bjork, too; apart from the
fact that I like her girl-like image, she's quite innovative and
sings heavenly. And of course I also like Tori Amos, Kate Bush
and (though perhaps this is something to be truly ashamed of)
Mariah Carey (the older stuff, though, where she goes really
    high occasionally).

To the "it's a jam" guy: On "The Dance of Eternity", James
pronounced it as "jitsejam", with both "j" not pronounced as
    "dzj" but simply "j".

To the guy who mentioned Chris Duarte: Saw this guy doing some
stuff "live" last summer. I was suitably impressed, though he
seemed to be relying pretty much on one particular lick (if
you've seen him on stage, it's the thing he does in-between songs
to see if his guitar is in tune, I suppose).

Now on the fave stuff (although, of course, it's difficult to
limit stuff to just 5), besides DT and other progrock bands like
Rush, Fates Warning and Queensryche who are rather logical I
    think. In alphabetical order.
We all love these "fave" threads, don't we? I think it reveals
that, not all too deep down, we're all very much
    exhibitionists...

     Becker, Jason
Deep Purple (and that also means Rainbow)
     Malmsteen, Yngwie
     Metallica
     My Dying Bride

(runners-up would include Entombed, Anathema, Racer X, Obituary,
Mercyful Fate, Napalm Death, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Venom,
Sepultura, Slayer, older Van Halen and Paradise Lost)

Fave guitarists (again in alphabetical order). Sorry, definitely
    no five here.

     Becker, Jason
Blackmore, Ritchie (though he used to be better than he is now.
He's the reason I wanted to play guitar)
Hendrix, Jimi (this automatically includes Stevie Ray Vaughan)
     Malmsteen, Yngwie
     Petrucci, John
     Satriani, Joe
     Vai, Steve
     Van Halen, Eddie

Fave drummers (though I am not a drummer so I might be
    blasphemous here).

Bostaph, Paul (I can't even headbang on Slayer's "Divine
Intervention", that's how freaky it is!)
     Copeland, Stewart
Lee, Tommy (well, to be honest, I haven't heard a single note of
what he's done but I would surely like to be in his shoes - or
his bed in his stead, rather) :)
Peart, Neil (he's number 1, probably)
     Portnoy, Mike
     Powell, Cozy
Rockenfield, Scott (unless I am very much mistaken, he plays
4/4th on the skins and 3/4th on the cymbals on a song on "Rage
for Order" and, well, that kind of stuff impresses the hell out
    of me)
Shelton, Stephen (who I suspect is freaky for freakiness' sake,
but anyone who can play Confessor's "Condemned" gets a tip of the
    hat from me...awesome!)

     Fave bassists:

Courbois, Barend (who used to be in Whistler Courbois Whistler)
Hamm, Stuart ("I've seen him do it...it's not a pretty sight"
wow this guy is technically amazing...saw him do it two metres in
front of me on Satriani's "Flying" tour....will see him in
November on the new Satch tour!)
     Harris, Steve
Lee, Geddy (he's not too flashy but quite OK)
Sheehan, Billy (the solo that he did for GFTPM is excellent)

Fave vocalists (I am sorry, but although I like James LaBrie
he's not in it. Once someone told me he really breathes out
deeply after each sentence, I just get irritated with it,
    especially live)

Diamond, King (actually, I think I'm not kidding here!)
Dio, Ronnie James (in his Rainbow and Black Sabbath days,
    though)
Hetfield, James (probably not too brilliant technically, but I
    love the rawness)
     Tate, Geoff

And because singers sometimes tend to be so full of themselves I
also have a few least-fave ones.

Bonnett, Graham (ruined some Rainbow stuff for me)
Dickinson, Bruce (only live, though; in the studio he's OK)
Jeffreys, Scott (who completely ruins the technically excellent
    band Confessor)
Osbourne, Ozzy (gosh it's amazing how bad he is)
Stewart, Rod (he's not metal, but it always struck me that he's
so bad yet he still sells albums like a madman; my parents loved
    this shit)

And my top 5 of Dutch bands (now there's an interesting
    thread!).

     Altar (thrash/death)
     Celestial Season (doom)
     Gathering, The (doom)
     Orphanage (progressive doom)
     Whistler Courbois Whistler (guitar)

My penultimate remark: Am I the only one who thinks that
subjects like, "Re: YTSEJAM #1002" really suck? I mean, I would
like to know what a message is about so that I can know whether
    to skip it or not...

My last remarks in this post that some people will doubtlessly
find far too long: Boy, these Blind Melon guys surely rule
    heavily in the sucking department.

And some questions: Does anyone one knows the birth date and
    year of Derek Sherinian?
And who's this Terry Bozzio character? What should I listen to
    to check him out?

There is a comment in the last Scraming in digital ( the queensryche
electronic newsletter ) which tells of a movement to get headbangers ball
back on MTV. I guess everyone interested is going to e-mail MTV on
Halloween. Since there really is no heavy metal played on MTV anymore I
think this is very important. Please look into sending e-mail to MTV on
    the 31st....

I say make them PAY!!!!! Graffitti sounds cool, but maybe a protest, or
a bunch of DT fans go and stand up front during their set. What could be
more poetic than a group of people with DT shirts and maybe a banner
    right in their face?

Just a thought: Queensryche is currently setting up to record another
album, right. And DT is doing the same, follow me here. Maybe their
albums will be released around the same time, I have only two words,
    TOUR, TOUR!!!!!!

One more little snipet before I depart. Upon watching the movie SINGLES
yesterday I noticed a "tore down" version of Soundgarden's "Spoonman"
during one of the scenes. Have anyone else noticed it? Not to important
    just wanted to mention it.

    Hey Everybody!!
This is my first post to the Jam. I've been reading for the past week
or so, and I feel compelled to write about this Blind Melon thing. Dream
Theater will always be in the deck in my car, my deck at home as well as in my
deck at work. I have only had 1 opportunity to see them live, when Pull Me
Under was first released as a video on Mtv! That was a long time ago. I have
moved to a larger area so maybe they will come around on the next tour.

Anyway...My final thoought on the Melon thing is this:

Why don't look at Blind Melon's live performance. I saw the pay-per-view of
Woodstock 94. Did anyone see their set? Hands down, they were the absolute
worst band there. They sounded the worst, their stage presence was terrible,
and, their overall presentation of themselves was awful.

It kind of bothers me that so many of us are getting real huffy about
this. Obviously, Blind Melon cares little about technical music, and I agree
that they shouldn't bash it, but why are we wasting our time with them. They
are probably the type of people who would be basking in our misery. I think
anyone who listened to any song by either band would easily be able to tell
which band is by far the more superior musicians. Rather than complain about
their criticisms, lets laugh at their idiocy!!!

                                            Yours in music,
                                                    Shawn

You know that lomml thing I keep mentioning to the list? If you
would have got yourself a copy and looked in it, you would see:

Mailing list for the music group King's X. This is a
moderated, digest style mailing list. It is full of
discussion, critique, news, chat about the band. Some of the
