Hi!

He died in a car accident (I cant remember exactly, but I think this was more
than a year ago).
>I'm also wondering why Jon Oliva didn't do
>vocals on AHoR. Was it maybe because he was too emotionally distraught
>over his brother's death that he couldn't sing?
I am not sure about this, but I think he left the band before Criss died.
>I know he does some of
>the keyboards, plus he co-produced the album.
And, he wrote a big part of the music, too.
On their new record, "Dead Winter Dead", he even sings two songs. The liner
notes of the new CD say "All songs written by Oliva/O'Neill"
The new record is *awesome*. Its a concept album/rock opera like "Streets". I have
been listening to this CD and ACOS (DTC!!!) almost exclusively the last two weeks.

Sounds like the guy was gambling, playing cards (using a deck
of Bicycle brand cards), and someone shot him for cheating because he
had an extra card (hence the 53rd card).
Mike, you're very lucky to be able to talk with Mike Portnoy!
But you deserve it for all of your hard work (I've enjoyed all of your
releases so far). If you think of it you might ask him whether he
thinks the band will continue in a prog-rock direction or more of a
metal direction (or something else) and also how Derek S. will affect
the direction with his writing.

You know, I'm amazed at all the "big rigs" people are posting they own
on they net.
I've owned a lot of equipment in my time, but the most was two marshall
full stacks. Currently, my set-up, which I've used religiously for the
last 5 years, has been:
- Modified Ibanez RG550 guitar
- Peavey 5150 1/2 stack (used to be a modded Marshall years ago)
- Boss Digital Delay
That's it, sans all the cords to connect.
Happy rails, ....

How fellow ytsejammers! Two SHORT things:
1) I ACTUALLY wore out my Awake CD!:) I was just listening to Eroto.
today and all of a sudden it started skipping uncontrollably for the 1st
time ever!! And I freaked out because-- darnit-- I LOVE THAT SONG! I
looked at the CD itself and it was spotless... I've darn near played
that thing enough to ware it out-- looks like I'll have to buy another one.
2) Last night I was thinking "If DT has Christmas songs (O Holy Night),
then why shouldn't it have Halloween songs? How about these:
- Scarred (you know, like greusome scars)
- Caught In A Web (A spider Web:)!)
- Under A Glass Moon (A FULL glass moon:)!)
Okay, that's enough of that... I'm prbably going to regret sending this
message! Later!

first of all, do we REALLY want a resurgence of headbanger's ball on mtv?? i
mean, if rikki rachtman does it again, i think i'll puke. i hope that they
would get another vj to host it.
there are some good points about how metal/rock gets less airplay than rap,
r&b, etc. i remember hearing awhile ago that hard rock and heavy metal
account for 55% of all videos. makes one wonder. anybody listening btw is a
great idea, and i hope it goes thru. although i have some reservations about
the success of this project, i hope it works, and i will do what i can....
got my ticket for the el-n-gee today! i was way happy. so i get to see them 2
days in a row!! incidentally, last time i saw them, i went to another concert
the day after (not dt- this time branford marsalis)
to mike bahr: i'm not sure what's up, but should i start worrying about the
fate of my ad (#183). or am i being way impatient?
so mr. petrucci is a happy father..congrats. did he have those twins? are
they called "miracle" and "sleeper?" tomax and xamot?
re: kevin. i still don't want to accept his cancer rumors. and i think it's
too early to believe so. just my opinions.

You guys are being kind of harsh, aren't you. I just bought the X-Factor
this morning. After one listen, I'd have to say that it's a little
different, but it's not anything that won't grow on me after repeated
listens. I kind of like the new singer. He doesn't have the range that
Bruce does, but it's a nice change for a band that needed a serious
change. Just my $0.02. Later...

Someone on the list asked what happened to Criss Oliva of Savatage. In
October of 1993 he was killed in a car accident in Florida. His car was
hit head-on by a drunk driver. I was surprised to find out that Savatage
released an album after that, because Criss wrote most of the songs. The
new singer is also on Edge of Thorns. Check it out! Later...

Hey all,
So who's the greatest, nicest DT fan in the universe and wants to drive a
poor little kid to CT from near Boston so he can live his dream of going to
a Dream Theater concert? Heh, well that's semi-serious (the living the dream
part was definitely serious). Anyways...who wants to dub me Accoustic Dreams
and/or subcon? I'd greatly appreciate it. Some other thoughts...
Well, first of all, I'm pissed off at Blind Melon also. However, I won't
stoop to their level by saying they suck, they should be burned, etc. They
have their own style, and attitude, towards music. It is their own loss that
they're so closed-minded about other types of music (better types). They're
the one's missing out on the DT, not us. BTW, what really pisses me off is
that they don't even give reasons for why they don't like DT. Direct quotes
are "this is the kind of guitar sound where a million lights light up on his
rig", or "I bet they have really nice hair", "that kind of guitar playing is
just plain stupid!". Why is it stupid? what's wrong with complex rigs?
what's wrong with really nice hair?!?! I'll just let them slowly rot away
(along with their albums stored in the back of peoples closets and/or in the
trash).

Hi jammers!
After a fairly long (2 months but it felt like years) hiatus, I'm back.
You may remember me as potestatem@aol.com, but now I'm
dlg3441@is2.nyu.edu .
I have been away to long! Forgive my ignorance, but is DT playing in the
NY area again soon? I've heard hushed "Malibu's" floating around. Any
info would be appreciated. If this is already dead in the jam, feel free
to e-mail me personally.
To quickly respond to some current threads:
I play guitar. My live rig is a Guild X-79 skyhawk (yes, it has pink and
black stripes) with a Steinberger GM2T as a backup straight into a
Randall RG-80 112SC. I used to use a lot of effects pedals, but that rig
was compiled totally in my basement and ditched after my first club gig 3
years ago. I've yet to find an effect so exciting that I'm willing to
schlep it to a show. I do have a Digitech TSR-12 around for my studio or
if I suddenly feel the urge to play the solo from "Surrounded." I also
have one of those little GK-250ML's to go with the Steinberger for my
dorm room. People see it and think I play tennis or something. ;)
Fav other bands:
KISS!
RUSH
Living Colour (particularly STAIN)
EM-50 (Shameless plug! check out http://pages.nyu.edu/~dlg3441/)
Tori Amos
And that will be all this fine morning. Later!

2) Texas to NY - Taking I-10 sounds like the long way to me. You have to

direct line, I would think.
3) To the guy that put Newsted on his top 5 bassists - Why? He couldn't

4) Need directions to Malibu? E-mail me.

Hello Jammers,
Acoustic Dreams is by far the best CD that Mike Bahr's Prism label has
produced. The sound on the acoustic tracks is right from the
soundboard and is the quality of material that could legitemately be
released by a label. I suggest that all of the jammers who haven't
picked this one up do so, since it is well worth your money.
The untimely fate of Kevin Moore post came from someone who listened to
the radio. If we take into account what radio people say the following
must have happened:
1. Neil Peart of Rush has died of cancer and/or quit the band.
2. Rush released a new album in May of 1995 and have been touring on it.
3. Pink Floyd is working on their 2nd leg of the US tour at this moment.
4. Yes has finally broken up, no really.
5. Genesis will be back with Peter Gabriel as lead singer in 1996.
6. Dream Theater's famous track Metropolis Part 2 is on the ACOS album.
7. etc....
I feel a bit like Notradamous

I am considering writing to the DT fanzine. Can anyone give me
info on this. How much is it, what's it like, is it worth it?
I tried to get a reponse of some sort about the meaning of the
lyrics to Voices and the Silent Man. I'm sure this has already been
discussed, but I wasn't around for it. I'm primarily interested in any
comments the band has made about it, if any. If you want, you can e-mail
me personally.
Another topic that I'd like to bring up, which may or may not have
been discussed before is the prevalence of Christian images in DT's
lyrics. With a band like King's X, it makes sense, since they are on some
level Christians. With DT, however, that is not the case (to my
knowledge-correct me if I'm wrong). Religious images are prevalent in art
and society in general, even if the artist is not promoting the idea. I'm
aware of that. I suppose, I just find it interesting, being a Christian,
to see a rather extensive use of such images in a band like DT. Sometimes
it may just be used arbitrarily, to create an image (hense the purpose of
imagery). I'm just curious if anyone else has any thoughts on any other
reason, or any reflections at all about this idea.

jam. Oh shit, I just deleted it. WOW. the 12pm version _AND_ the 5pm
version. Fuck me. I deleted them when I thought that I was forwarding them
to a friend. There we go, the 8pm version. Why am I getting the jam five
times a day when it just cluttered with the same shit over and over again?
That is like reading the PSU Daily Collegian.

To Steve Z.--
Your favorite guitarist list was very nice! I'm really
flattered. Have you ever even heard my stuff? Did Jason H. play it for
you? Anyway, you've gotta hear the new stuff -- crazy!! And I am
actually finding people that want to play this type of music, so maybe
the next demo will have PEOPLE on it, not just me and my toys!!
Later!

Yeah, I just read in a catalog (RadRockers) that SMII was going to be
remixed (or it already was...) and released in the US with like 2 or
3 minutes more than the German import (suck...I already shelled out
big bucks for the German import last year...).

Hi Jammers,
I'll have to send my apologies to you all for not sending any update of the DT
fave songs Poll for at least 6 weeks or so.
I've been really busy with my new job but I've got some free time now so you can
expect one in a while.
Carpe Diem

Yes, there is a KX mailing list...but not like this one (what could
be as good as this one...)...
They send out digests like 1 or 2 times a week.
Here's the address(es):

Subject: Re: who invented punk
Message-ID: <9510191428.AA01277@sundoc13.software-ag.de>
Hi from the Old World
I originally thought about sending this stuff (which may get a bit long, sorry
in advance) to Damon Fibraio, who asked this question in the jam 1047. But I
decided to send it to the jam for several reasons:
- other people might want to add their stuff to it
- I am trying to start a new thread (well new for me, but more of that later).
OK, so who invented punk. Basically it was Malcom Mclaren, who just wanted to
make some quick cash (nothing wrong with that) and so he invented the Sex
Pistols. The whole aim of the Pistols was to make money quick, send people up,
and (in my opinion, most importantly) give the music scene of the time a much
needed kick up the butt.
Why do I say importantly? Well, if you look back to the mid 70's (I know a lot
of you were still shitting your diapers at the time), the music scene was
dominated by just a handful of established bands and things were becoming
somewhat stagnant. True, some of the bands were (and in some cases still are)
good - Yes, Floyd, Sabbath, Genesis -, but nothing really new and innovative
was coming out. Flame me if you want, but that's how I felt at the time. There
was a sort of underground/club scene, with bands like Dr. Feelgood, Graham
Parker, Eddie and the Hotrods, but this scene was too small and too well
behaved to be really noticed by the music establishment. Then came the Pistols.
The music industry (like it or not, it is an industry, and like any other, is
geared at making money) has never been the same since. The established bands
had to sit down and rethink their positions, they couldn't just publish
anything that they wanted, knowing that it would be bought for lack of
anything else. New innovative bands were suddenly being presented a chance
to get contracts and air play (The Cure would never have made it without
John Peel) and the whole rock scene started to diversify. In my opinion,
the Sex Pistols album 'Never Mind the Bollocks' is one of the 5 most
influential albums of the last 20 or so years; in an odd roundabout sort of way
DT would not have been possible without it (ducks into nuclear shelter to
avoid flames). True, a lot of the punk bands that then jumped on the bandwagon
were true crap, but they soon disappeared to where they came from, and the
first punk movement died. This, however, had prepared the ground for some
new bands to come up, and these new post-punk bands included some metal/rock
classics like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard etc. These bands in turn
influenced the next generation and the diversification continued. Anyway,
most of you should be able to see what I'm getting at.
Now to my proposed new thread (which may have DT content or not, it's up to
you: what do the Jammers consider to be the most influential albums of the
last 20 or so years?
My list (not in any order, either chronologically or in significance) is
as follows
Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks
Beatles - Sargeant Pepper's
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Please join in, I think the results could be quite telling.
Oh, just one more thing before I sign of for today. If you don't like other
bands ripping into DT, just ignore them. You don't have to listen to them.
I can happily live with people who listen to Take That or New Kids on the Block,
as long as I don't have to listen to it. Loosen up, this is also more to life
than DT (apart from which, what would we have to bitch about if everybody liked
DT and if all musicians played in DT clones?).
Get those lists in, and sensible flames only please (not the YOU ASSHOLE type)
stay safe and happy listening
