I do like Waiting for the Punchline, though not nearly as much as III
or Pornografiti (or however its spelled). I love "Midnight Express"
especially. The album is so raunchy, though, that it took some time
to get used to it. Apparently, they didn't want to stay with the
progressive angle they began on III, but you have to agree their
stuff is creative.
I also wanted to add to the list of favorite singers. Guitarists is
too easy. Singers - there seem to be so few good ones, especially
when they LaBrie to compare with.
Singers:
1. Labrie (sorry, I refuse to do fav's except DT on this one)
2. Amy Ray (of the Indigo Girsl)
3. Dennis DeYoung
4. Ian Gillian
5. Bjork (or whatever the f*** her name is)
You guys are probably gonna go nuts on the last one, but you should
really give a listen to the album by 4 Non Blondes called "Bigger,
Better, Faster, More". She's got an amazing voice.
BTW - I first got into DT through I&A, and when I got WDADU, I could
not stand Charlie Dominici's voice. Does anywone else feel the same
(or different)?

Okay, here's a twist on the top five favorite bands thing. What are the
five bands that you would most like to HANG OUT WITH? You just forget
that they are musicians in a band that you like. Pretend they're your
best friends. You hang out, talk about stuff you like, how much Blind
Melon sucks, etc.
Mine (no particular order):
Live
Letters to Cleo
Weezer
Dream Theater
Well, I only have four for now. Basically I'm looking at age range. I'm
20 and the band members in the first 3 bands are around my age. The Dream
Theater guys are older, but I think they'd be cool to hang out with.
And as much as I like Rush, Pink Floyd, and Queensryche, they might be
just a little old. <G> Well, Queensryche isn't too bad. I guess I'd put them
up there as the 5th one. Heh, the guys in Pink Floyd are OLDER than my
parents! The guys in Rush are like my parents' ages. They might be cool,
but there would be a generation gap. Well, that was just something that
was on my mind.

Vanilla Ice. <G> Also, I think maybe we should mention our top 5 favorite
bands besides the following (whether you like all of these or not):

Marillion, Yes, Metallica, Megadeth
These SEEM to be the most popular bands in here (well, DT is a definite

Yeah, "not widely available" is a good description...
I got into them after really getting into King's X and the Galactic
Cowboys...It took me a long time to find it near me...and I ended up
finding it at one of my local NRM (national rip-off music) for
$15.95!!!!

Hello Ytsejammers!
I've been reading this for a month or two now, this is my first post.
Is there anyone in the UK who has a tape of the gig DT/FW did at the
Forum, London earlier this year? I'd love a copy, it was the last
gig of the tour if I'm right, I was there and thought it was one
of the best I'd seen in years. Please help.
Someone asked if the new (latest) Marrillion CD 'Afraid of Sunlight'
was worth having a listen to. Well, coming from someone who loves
the post-Fish stuff just as much as the Fish albums, I'd say it's worth
getting only if you're a long term fan of the band. It's not the one
to get for someone who just 'likes' them. It's basically (sweeping
statement time..) Brave without such a strong concept/theme. Maybe
the music has improved a tad. I suppose it's a better album track
for track than other Hogarth era stuff other than Brave but ... Nah,
don't bother, my opinion's made up. Having said that, I've got it
and I love it. Hope that hasn't made you yet more unresolved.
Top five bands (No Spec. Order.)
This isn't easy to do, I just get albums I like, if a band seems to
have took a downer I move on and maybe check them out next time
round. So this is really the Top five bands who I'd buy their next
album the day it was stocked.
Queensryche (but my opinion may change if their next album isn't a
double cd concept thing. Atleast as good as O:M. :)

Manic Street Preachers
Mindfunk
Mr.Bungle*
Fates Warning

Funny this should come up, but I've just made a compilation up for a friend. He's heavily into Rush, Queen, Yes etc. so I had to pick the stuff I thought he might like best. I was limited to an hour having only a 60 minute tape. This is what I came up with:

Chris was killed on October 17th 1993 when a drunk driver ran in to his car when he was on the way home from a concert. He was indeed a great guitarist, and I am sad whenever I hear him play. I only bought 'Handful of Rain' when I found it S/H (On Sunset Strip !). It is good except for the first song. Like a previous jammer I like 'Gutter Ballet' best of theirs. Patricia

Actually, most of this isn't *quite* right.
Jon Oliva left the role of lead vocals after the Streets tour ('91-'92) to pursue a number of other projects, specifically fronting another band (Dr. Butcher) featuring Chris Caffery on guitars (he played on Gutter Ballet) and a musical ("Romanovs") which will open at a large theater in Chicago in late 1996. Dr. Butcher released their debut album in 1995 and has another album due in March 1996.
He wrote, produced and played keys on Edge of Thorns (1993 - Criss Oliva's last recorded album) and wrote, produced and played keys on Handful of Rain (1994) AND toured in support of the album, playing keys and rhythm guitar. He did sing some lead vocals (a few songs) at some gigs, but it was a rare occasion.
Jon wrote, produced, played keys and sings lead on two songs of the new Savatage album "Dead Winter Dead", which is available as an import from either Europe or Japan (different bonus tracks on each version).
The American release is next Tuesday, Oct. 24, two years and one week to the day after Criss Oliva's untimely 1993 death, in which he was creamed by a seven-time drunk driver head on while driving his 1982 Mazda back from a concert (which he was attending as a spectator) near Zephyr Hills, FL. His wife Dawn suffered critical but not fatal injuries, and has recovered at home in Tampa, Florida.
There is a Criss Oliva-era live album coming out early in 1996 as well.
Alex Skolnick (ex-Testament) was guest guitar player on Handful of Rain; Chris Caffery and Al Pitrelli (ex-Widowmaker) have been brought on board as permanent replacements and both play on the new album.
Incidentally, the new Savatage rocks.

When I posted the big FUCK banner, I only did it to get a laugh out of you guys, and for the most part it worked(those who took time to let me know you liked it, thanks). As for how I felt about the band before I read that interview, I actually thought that they were kind of original, and frankly I LIKED what I heard for them. So I would like to dispell any notion that I did not like them, it is just that whenever I hear them now, all I can think of is how they bashed one of my favorite bands. You understand, don't you? On the recent Iron Maiden thread, I am a long time Iron Maiden fan from the Number of the Beast days, and I too WAS disappointed in the album X-factor. I say was because after a few listens, I got past the new singer (who I can't imagine was the best available choice??) and realized that the music was pretty cool!!! It reminds me of Piece of Mind and Seventh Son, sort of a cross of those two styles. To those who couldn't stand it, I would say give it a few more tries. Queensryche's Promised Land took several listens and a concert before I liked it more than Empire. Rush's Hold Your Fire was also the same way for me.

To David re: Vai's new album: I would get it if you like his stuff, although it's only about 33 minutes in length. I would say it's much more "mainstream" than his usual stuff. You know how on Passion and Warfare there were a couple of cool tunes and the rest were way out there? Well this one seems to be much more in the vein of For the Love of God, IMO.
Also I know this sick little boy named Will Kriski who lives in Calgary, Canada and who's never seen Dream Theater. His only wish is that he could see DT once in his lifetime. How 'bout we get a collection together so that I...er...he can have his dream come true? He would love the money to buy a plane ticket to Connecticut for the Dec. show.

I heard that his new album was called "Perspectives" and might be out around Christmas time. Its got a lot of cumputer aided music, all arranged by him. I also read that Marty Friedman and Steve Perry!?!? of Journey had contributions on the album. I read this months ago in Guitar World so I may be wrong on who is on it. Another great article was a response to Jason's letter by Frank Aresti (formerly Fates Warning :-(.........very touching and eloquent!

Here's my list of top 5 (non-DT) bands(currently) check 'em out 1) Blind Guardian - awesome might of German metal. Super double pedalling and ....Truly Mystical Old Bards from your Imaginations From the Other Side 2) Skyclad - medieval sounds, violins included. and super sarcastic lyrics. Long live Martin Walkier 3) White Zombie - cyber, technically less skillful, but what the ............... 4) Pantera - if you haven't heard of them, you don't deserve to 5) Paradise Lost - gloomy, depressive, melodic, feverish and blackly abstract. Makes me feel sooo... painful/painless and saturates me in dark poignant euphoria(don't understand me? Listen to Draconian Times!) There is no paradise in it.
And now for Thinking Aloud!!! What the fuck is with Blind Melon/Lemon? They suck like lemons and I think it's a fucking waste of bytes on this mailing list to even talk about them. They don't deserve to be on this list!! Can't wait to squeeze 'em dry and kick them into scum and shit of the sewers.

And for Thinking Allowed!!! I use to think Lars Ulrich was the best drummer in metal. Until I heard Mike Portnoy in IAW somewhen when DT was writing Awake. What he did in Metropolis and Learning to Live impressed me more than the drumming in Awake. There's more power in it. It must drain the hell out of anyone to remember and go through 20 or so minutes of drumming in ACOS. Hail Portnoy! ("There is none higher"-as quoted by Beavis and Butthead). I'm sure they weren't talking about Aerosmith.

OK, now I've seen plenty of people say that they skip over "Space-Dye Vest" when they listen to Awake. I admit that the first couple of times that I listened to Awake that I did the same. Now I'm kinda into depressing type stuff, like NIN, and Queensryche, etc...one day I happened to read the lyrics to this song and WOW!!! My point is nothing special, but I'd just like to put in my bid for SDV.
Anyway, my least favs are as follows:
WDADU - don't have it, but the radio station I work at does...? IAW - UaGM (I have heard this song soooo many F'n times...and what the hell is it about anyway? - not that it should matter!) Awake - Silent Man (INCOMING FLAMES) => really nothing special here ACoS - The whole Elton John part
In my own opinion though, I'd rate these above...well, you know.
