You know, I'm considering trading him cards for AD, Cygnus, and WDaTU!
<G> Well, first I'm gonna trade him cards for cards. I CANNOT kick the
Magic habit. It keeps me from buying all the CD's I want to. Of course,
any new DT, Queensryche, Rush, or Fates Warning CD will probably get my
attention first, though. For my birthday, I got Pulse and a box of Ice
    Age Boosters.

I agree. I'm definitely going to do this. I think that if enough people
do it, MTV just may listen to us and put it back on. I think it's worth a
shot. Come on. Let's support Operation: Revolution! And you can do it

    Hi folks,
To whoever asked about the new Mr Bungle album, it is out (as of
10/10) and it is WIERD!!! Nearly makes the first one sound normal,
even!! Anyway, I got it the day it came out and it really weirded me out
at first. I wasn't sure they hadn't gone overboard. However, after
several listens and over the course of about four days, I grew to love
this album as much as (perhaps MORE than...?) their debut; it really is
terrific. I always bypass the first song, "Everyone I Went To High
School With Is Dead,"--it's kind of a noisy waste of time. (I'm all for
noise bands, but this song just didn't cut it.) The rest of the disc is
great! Highlights for me include "Desert Search For Techno Allah," "Ma
Meeshka Mow Skwoz," and "Merry Go Bye Bye," with honorable mentions going
to just about everything else! Any band that can change a song from a
50's-ish beach tune to a death metal song in a matter of seconds has GOT
to be worthy of a listen, as far as I'm concerned! Parts of the album
have a very classical structure as well (like "The Bends" and
"Backstrokin'"; all in all, it's a terrific, bizarre, well-rounded piece
of work. The vocals are actually kind of minimal, and when they are
present, more often than not they're in another language or just plain
jibberish (there's even some scat-type stuff!). I encourage anyone with
an open mind about music to check out this 68-minute opus from a
    deservingly legendary band. :) <PR mode off>

    >> First of all, those of you up in arms about the whole Blind Melon
thing, why get so worked up? They feel differently about Dream Theater
than we do...so? I know a LOT of people that have heard DT and not liked
it (I know more non-DT fans than I do DT fans :); it's like any other
music in that it's not for everyone. Yeah, they expressed their distaste
for the music in a less than polite way. It's gonna happen. Deal with
it. Don't pout. Surely you've talked in a similar way about music that
you don't like; why can't Blind Melon? Because their opinions conflicted
with yours? I mean, I make fun of cock-rock stuff like Poison and
Warrant a lot, much like Blind Melon talked about DT. But I still
respect the right of cock-rock fans to like it, just as Blind Melon
stated at the end of the article (something like, "Don't get us wrong, we
have no problem with people liking this stuff. Just keep it away from
us."). So settle down. I recall a couple people applauding John
Petrucci for his graciousness when he heard about the article, why can't
some of you do the same? Threatening to boycott Blind Melon, grafitti
their tour bus, or piss on their instruments (??) sounds kinda childish
    to me...<<<

I agree with this totally, so many people on the jam have always said
that everyone is entitled to htier own opinion. Well, the guys in Blind Melon
are just as entitled as you and I are. Just becasue they dislike a band we
happen to like a lot doesnt mean we really should sit here and flame them.
Personally I think Blind Melon somewhat better than some of the other bands
that seem to be popular now. Just because they dont like DT doesnt mean that
Im going to change the channel when a song of theirs comes on. This is all a
    matter of right to opinion.

Don't even get me started on Blind Melon. I read that when it first came
out and I flipped. How the hell are they? Better question is...where are
they now? Their new record hes sold just about nothing. For a band who's
whole reason is to get on the radio sure havn't been on the radio for
awhile. I'm sorry, but John Petrucci and Joe Satriani are my two biggest
infulences for my guitar playing. And busting on both of them on the same
article really pissed me off! Both of their playing styles are so cliche
and boring...it makes me sick that they could have made any money.

Blind Melon...the one hit wonders. Let's face it, the bee-girl has more
    exposure any more.

    Sorry, I'm done.

Here's a thread to start if you jammers are interested...

Ex. "the mission" - Rush, Quuensryche, Damn the Machine

"best I can" - Rush, Queensryche

"jump" - Van Halen, the Pointersisters, Kris Kross

Why don't we name some songs that various artists have done in which the
song is the same name. I'd like to hear some other ones because as of
1:35 a.m. right now, this is all I can think of.

At least that's the name I see on my screen:

I understand your statement about real punk like the sex pistols, I even
liked god save the queen. That punk made a statement, originally from young
kids in England, (I took a rock and roll class, I know my shit). But Green
Day and the multitudes of followers can't be called punk, hell, they can't be
    called music.

How old am I? 21. Am I immature? Maybe, but I am also a frustrated
musician and radio disc jockey who is tired of watching the music business
glorify people who don't deserve it. Was my post a little harsh? Yes. Am I
sorry for it at all? No. I was blowing off steam.

Are you a musician? Can you relate to the way I, and probably 90 percent
of this list feel? Have you played in a bar, pouring out your heart and soul
into a song and have it go unappreciated, and then start questioning your own
ability, especially after seeing bands that you can run circles around get
better crowd response? Maybe not. Let me tell you something, it can break
your self-esteem, and it has broken mine, and I'm really sick of it.

it 4:00am and it just occured to me that i don't know any women who listen
to Dream Theater. i don't know any women that like King's X. i don't know
any women that like Fates Warning. or Anacrusis. or Savatage. dear god,
what kind of nightmare is this? how can this be true? oh, god, please make
this stop... what's going on, help me, please it can't be true...

    whaoh... i'd better calm down.

truly though, why is it that is seems like a majority of the people who
appreciate prog music enough to actually go out and buy it and be passionate
about it are men? what's goin on? i'm not denying the presence of women on
the jam, but what the hell? where are all those progressive metal women i
see at dt and Kansas shows?

how many women are on the jam?

hey... there aren't any women musicians in this genre either! what's going
on? Rush, DT, FW, King's X, Ryche, Anacrusis, others... no women...

    can someone explain this?
    i need answers.

     To Pat Daugherty:

Heard the new Malmsteen. It's one f*@kin' heavy album, too. Listen to
"Voodoo" and "Ouverture 1622". Amazing stuff, I think. Only one semi-soppy
ballad. If you liked "The Seventh Sign" you'll like this one too.

Bonus tracks on "Chasing Time": There is really no need. It's just a few
remixes and old tracks. One track is a pre-version of some song. At the end
of the last song there is some singing/swearing. Quite tasteless, actually,
when coming from a band like Fates Warning.

About people saying how MTV sucks:

MTV does not try to play what the people want to see/hear. They don't even
want to play what they *think* people want to see/hear. Far more arrogantly,
I think they want to determine what people should get exposed to, and shape
the world of mass music. Yes, people, they are brainwashing us. Grunge would
not have been this big a thing of it hadn't been for MTV. It's just a
marketing machine. Their target audience might be Joe Public, but matter of
fact is that they are really only looking after the interests of record
    companies.

     Guitar rig:

Well, you can't call it a "rig" at all. It's a Cyclone by TKS Technologies.
I think it's Japanese, but might be American. It's black and looks quite
mean. All the electronics are rusty, though. Can only have max volume and
minimum or maximum tone. Play D'Addario XL 120+ strings and Fender medium
picks. The amp? It's a really small one called Gorilla. 30 Watts. I use a
Boss HM-2 distortion. The guitar is signed by Yngwie Malmsteen and John
Petrucci, though the Petrucci one is horrible because I had been standing
outside in the cold for a few hours before he could sign it. I took it in
and it went all wet and condensed. Signature never really survived that...

     To Mike Bahr:

Next time Mike calls you...maybe you could ask about this testicle cancer
thing with Kevin. I'd surely like some confirmation on that before we all
    start to freak out.
Is it lethal, by the way?

booklet. The cost for the US is 14 US dollars, or 9 pounds for 4
issues, including postage and packing. For one copy it is 4
dollars or 2.50 pounds. It says 'payment by bank draft or
International Money order in pounds sterling only, payable to
N.Elliot' or in cash in pounds or US dollars

Neil is always pleased to get articles contributed to the fanzine.
The cut-off date for the next issue is 2nd week of November.
Neil is not yet on e-mail, but will be soon.
If you have something you wish to send very soon then please mail
it to me and I shall s-mail it to him.
I do recommend the fanzine, it is packed full of information and
there is usually an interview from the band. MikeP is a great
supporter. The next issue will complete Mike's diary of the March
             European tour, including Ronnie Scotts..
Neil is well known to the band and travelled to the June (?)
New York gig with Mike and Derek playing an ACOS tape on the way.

The fanzine is THE official one.

I do sometimes pick out items from the jam, ask permission, then
             pass the info to Neil.

1)Richard: Terry Bozzio is a close to a drum god as you can get
without a prescription. He started playing w/Frank Zappa when he was
(gulp) 18! He not only redefined an entire genre of 70's progressive
music (I dare not say rock), but Zappa was so blown away that he started
writing music FOR Bozzio to play live (any drummer that has not heard of
of seen "The Black Page" is seriously missing out on the most musically
humbling experience of their lives. I don't care how good you are, you
will not be able to play this one without at least a month of sight
reading and even more months working out polyrythms that most people
don't know exist (11 over 6, 7 over 4, etc (not time signatures, actually
playing a groove or solo while making the groove fit in both time
    slots).
Anyway, he did a gig called Missing Persons (serious electronic
early-80's techno rock). when that stopped, he went totally studio.
Finally, he came out with some instructional videos, including the now
famous (or infamous) "Melodic Soloing over Ostinato's" series.
Absolutely incredible. Nowadays, he's touring with Jeff Beck, doing
studio stuff, and giving one-man performances of some of the pieces he's
composed. Also, if you haven't seen his kit....
Well, he was on a C.D. with a bassist and drummer called
"Polytown." The CD's as home, so I don't know the exact names of the
other guys. Nick Karn and Pete Torn, I think. I'll check later.
anyway, it's a very unique disc, and it won them top honors in a lot of
prog polls (usually within the top 3). Check it out.
If you get a chance, check the guy out. You won't be disappointed.

2)Rig: Speaking of huge riggs, I've got one for you:
1)Old 30's Gretch bass and snare (solid wood,
    reconditioned and restained/varnished myself)
                    2)Pearl double pedal
                    3)Sabian 10", 20" ride, 13" hats
                    4)Zildian 8", 16" crash, 18" china.
5)Vic Firth Shogun 5a/b, assorted brushes and mallets.

No, it ain't big. however, if you can't do it on a two-piece.....
You wouldn't believe how much thought goes into thinking up new
    fills while playing through ACoS.

3)Mega Trend-Braking Ditto's to the Living Colour fans. They were a huge
    influence. Sorry they broke up.

4)They played Zep doing the medley on a local radio show (not the medley,
the songs). I've never liked Zep anyway (they were the most disgusting
pigs on the planet when they were big). After making the comparison, i
can't help but to have further justification for my assessment of their
    mediocrity.

    5)Knock Knock...who's there?.....Orange....orange who?.....orange you
glad I didn't say Blind Melon?

well crafted pop songs. Oh well, hope it made them all afortune.

This sample was taken from the movie Cinema Paradiso. It's about a who grows
up in a small Italian town and returns later as a successful business man.
The man who ran the films (changed the reels etc.) in the Movie theater was
caught in a fire and ended up losing his sight because of the fire. It
translates to: "Now that I have lost might sight, I see much better."
or "I can see much clearer now I'm blind." Hope this helps!!!

    >A while back I was listening to one of the local "we want
    >to be just like MTV" radio stations in my car...

Oh, really? That's why we play RAP all the time, right?

The station this person is referring to is WPST in Trenton.
97.5 if you happen to be wandering through the area.
    I work there.

    >That's right the traffic report was playing DT underneath!!!!!
    >I got very excited at this and was under the false impression that this
    >radio station would actually play DT. Wrong.

But it's not like I didn't take my "The Silent Man" single into the
Music Director, and leave it with him, hoping he'd play it. He didn't.

    >...but I just thought it was funny that they would use DT as
    >background music and not good enough to play (or that they
    >are too good to play on that station IMO) in regular rotation.

OR: it COULD mean that there is a dream theater fan, who also
happens to be a Ytsejammer, who works there, and thought it
would make a cool bed. We've been using it for months.

How else did you think someone would come up with that?
If the station never plays the song, how could we know about it?
And also, why would we use ANY song that we play on a
regular basis as background music? That's not logical. That
just doesn't make sense, and it's not done.

And I ALSO used Pantera guitar riffs during the "New Rock
Experience"sweepers that run once an hour. Does that mean
    we have to play Pantera?

Anyway, ask Johnny@motown.ge.com - he knows about it.

And ya know what else? Part of Mike's Ytsejam drum solo gets
used during one of our other promos - "Experience the Music."

Believe me, I don't like much of what we play either. But, radio
is fast-food crap for the masses. I just wanted to get DT some
airplay, even if only DT fans recognized it.

    'jammers,

In general the slower songs by DT are my least favourite (SDV, Surrounded, AD, WfS, LSOAD, etc) mainly because I listen to DT mostly in my car. I'm not in the mood for slow stuff most of the time. HOWEVER, as a guitarist I love to play the solo in Another Day. There's so much feeling in that solo, along with the other parts as well (sax solo, etc).

Hey Malmsteen, You think you're better than me? (modified from SNL)
