    >>Betrayal, Saviour Machine (great prog-art rock), Enslaved (not the

    >>KX influenced!!!), and Detritus...plus many other bands...

    >Enslaved? What's that? Are they good?

hehehe...I *had* to throw them in...

They are a band that I work with here in Dayton, Ohio. Their
influences are: Tourniquet, old Deliverance, Betrayal, Sepultura, old
Megadeth, old Metallica, Testament, Pantera, Death, Rush...and guess
who?...Dream Theater...actually, the drummer is the one who got me
into DT (OK, there's *some* DTC).

So basically they are a metal band with some thrash, speed, and prog
influences...and they're Christians. They are currently unsigned,
but have been shopping their demo and contacting several labels (REX,
Intense, etc). They plan to be performing at next years Michigan
Mosh Fest (Memorial Day weekend), which I'll be helping out at (and
wearing GC and DT shirts...ok, some more DTC). Right now I'm the
drum tech, plus whatever else they need me to do...lowly peon, I.

    Hello Jammmers,
I just thought that I would share something that I've been meaning to
for a long time. A while back I was listening to one of the local "we want
to be just like MTV" radio stations in my car....(my sister was in the car
and she is into all that.....no flames please).....it was the afternoon and
the daily traffic report was on.....now, you know how they usually play
music underneath the report to make it a little more interesting? Well they
were doing it here.....It was a little bass and drum thing ending in kind of
    a guitar volume swell.....now I knew I recognized it yet I didn't know from
where (mostly because I couldn't here it well because of the woman talking
over it).....as the report went on I found myself saying a few words after
the swell thing happened they were:"Hold it now, Wait a minute, Come
on....etc." That's right the traffic report was playing DT underneath!!!!!
I got very excited at this and was under the false impression that this
radio station would actually play DT wrong....They kinda blew me off when I
went home and requested TTT. I know I sound like I'm rambling and I
probably am....but I just thought it was funny that they would use DT as
background music and not good enough to play (or that they are too good to
play on that station IMO) in regular rotation. In a simalar vien...those
Jammers in the PHila. radio listening area (I'm from Trenton NJ) listen to
93.3 WMMR every Fri. at Midnight. It's thier rockers show. It kicks much
ass. Last week they played the ZEP MEDLEY from ACOS.
    well enough rambling for now,

    Ryan Inverso

PS for those of you wondering what the SUBJECT ment....It's a private joke
between myself and another jammer......Got your attention didn't it
    Styles...

    BEST PLAYERS

At last somebody mentions some guys I've been missing in this thread...
Guitarists: Steve Lukather and Dan Huff
esp. Luke is a bad shredder, he can play almost anything, listen to his
latest solo album "Candyman" it's a mixture of Hard rock, Blues and Fusion.
.. this leads into drummers and Lukes new partner in crime:
Simon Philips, Listen to the track "Party in Simons pants" on the above
mentioned album to get a glimpse of his talent.
Try to catch Steve and Simon with their hobby band "Los Lobotomys" live...
    Kicks ass.

    GROUPS

Those of You who'd like to check out SAGA be sure listen to their early stuff.
SAGA, Images at Twilight, Silent Knight (IMO their best), Worlds Apart, In

    impress me.
They are actualy playing here in Gothenburg tonite!!!, but I had to stay
home with my 3 month old daughter.

I get a good approximation of JP's thrashy crunch sound of PMU with my

    Subject: Hey I'm back!

(adapted from a guitar mag (practicing musician?) )

Mike Bahr, bless his poor soul, has died and gone to heaven. He walks up
to the Pearly Gates with his guitar in hand and is STOKED! He hears all
this jamming going on, DT on the radio and PA, and life is just great.
St. Peter greets Mike and tells him he has been a good person through out
life. He notes that this is mainly due to the many DT fans he has brought
such joy to by the many bootlegs he has contributed to society. St Peter
informs Mike that (somehow) all the great guitarists have made it here
also; Hendrix, Pettruci, Vai, Van Halen, Santana, E. Johnson, Lifeson, and
many more. Mike inquieres about Malmsteen (in Mikes opinion, one the best
of all!). St Peter gets a grave look on his face and replies,"No MIkek
I'm afraid he didn't make it." Well Mike gets his bags and amp and goes
to his room when all of the sudden he hears the familiar neo-classical
lightnigh fast smooth as butter chops that could only come from non other
than the incredible Malmsteen. So Mike runs down to Peter again and says
"Peter, Malmsteen IS here! I just heard him!"

Petee replies, "No I'm afraid he isn't...sorry mike :( . So Mike, feeling
sad once agian, goes to his room when again he hears the incredibly clean
picked neo-classical sounds that he loves so. Once again Mike rushes down
to St Peter and again exclaims that he has heard Malmsteen. St Peter
looks at Mike with eyes of grief and says again that Malmsteen didn't make
it to heaven. Mike, feeling very confused, thinks for a minute and then
asks who the sounds in the next room are coming from. St. Peter, with a
very worried look on his face replies hesitantly "Well Im not suppose to
tell, but, its God. He thinks he's Malmsteen!

I was cruising through the old dictionary last night right around the
entries for "love" and love related terms (best not to ask 8^), and I ran
    accross an interesting entry:

love-lies-bleeding n. an amaranth with drooping spikes of small
                          red flowers.

Wow, that was cool... so I had to look up "amaranth" and it read:

amaranth n. 1) any of a genus of plants in the amaranth family,
usually with colorful leaves and, in some species, showy,
tassellike heads of flowers, as the love-lies-bleeding,
                   pigweed, tumbleweed, etc.
                2) [Poet.] an imaginary flower that never fades or dies.
                3) a dark purplish red.

Hmmmmm, very interesting indeed (especially number 2).... Just thought I
    would pass this info along...

You know what I think is most often overlooked about Steve Vai? As great
a guitarist as he is, I don't think that that's his greatest gift. I
think what Steve Vai is best at is getting sounds on tape. I mean, think
about it. Yeah, he's written some amazing songs ("For the Love of God",
"Sisters"), but imagine, for instance, Satch recording Vai's songs. He'd
probably get the tones (of home? Sorry, couldn't resist) and the lines
right, but it wouldn't sound the same. The way Vai records is
phenomenal. I would absolutely kill to get him as my studio engineer.
He must know everything there is to know about studio toys - effects,
gates, whatever those cool things are that make us sound good on tape.
They make him sound incredible! Ever see him live? As good as he is, he
doesn't compare to his albums. I don't mena the DLR albums or the
Whitesnake album (remember that?). I mean his stuff - P&W, Flex-able,
    etc. That stuff kills!

    Thank you, drive through please...

BTW - I'm there for the great Operation:Hey MTV! Get your heads out of
your asses! I'm recruiting people as we speak... er, read.

Well, hate is way too strong here. We are simply listing our least
FAVORITE DT songs. That should imply that we still like them. For
my part, I listed Another Day because when I think of DT's songs in
my head, I can never remember how Another Day goes. Its as though it
doesn't make an impression on me. After listening to Pull Me Under,
I'm ready for TTT and Metropolis. Surrounded comes between, and I
always think, "Oh yeah, this is a great song too", but Another Day
leaves me with nothing. Just an opinion. Maybe you could explain
why you like it (is it the lyrics, cause if so, I don't pay too much
attention to lyrics - not until I've decided I like the music
    anyway).

Oh yeah!!! I haven't heard him in a while... lemme pop in his Red and
Blue CD.... Doh!!! It's not here...But anyhow, I think he's excellent,
besides being so underrated. Doug Pinnick and Ty Tabor used to play for
his band a LONG time ago.
I really respecct him as a musician (including his lyrics, etc , etc.)

Anyways since I have been lurking for about... um a month or so, my
    obligatory DT content is:
Fave 5 guitarists: (I like this better than having to chose ONE)
(no order, ok? I can't decide)
    JP (hmmm....)
    Ty Tabor of KX
    Joe Satch
    Eddie Van Halen
    Chris Degarmo; QR
    and Phil Keagy

Ytse on every body (does that work, or rather.. Jam on... ;)

For Pat, the bonus track is called "Circles."
Parts of it came from two songs on IO, "The Strand"
and... dammit! I can never remember the name of the
other one. I don't have the liner notes handy, so
I couldn't tell you. The Fates guys say that they
find it hard to believe that they scrapped this
one, and I happen to agree. It's a great song.

    oooo, that's a toughie...

perhaps the fellow is a Thief who attempted to Sneak into a Bicycle Shop
    disguised as a Table...
the thing he didn't count on, however, was that there might be a Real
    Table guarding the place...
but there was, and it was a Truly Vicious Table; and this Vicious Table
took its job seriously, and thusly shot the Unfortunate Thief.

    I just realised that my last Reply was a bit Off Base;
    in addition to that,
the One True Answer just hit me as one would an obnoxious panhandler

    so here goes:

the Poor Fellow who had the unfortunate experience
of decorating the floor with his Brains
was quite obviously caught Cheating on his wife.

who was his wife, you ask?
why it was one of the bicycles, of course!
she came in and found him with not one, not two,
    but FIFTY-TWO other biycles!
(would this not be more than enough to provoke
even the gentlest soul into a Jealous Rage?)
ignoring his feeble excuse that he was merely playing 'Solitaire' (ha!)
she shot him and then all of his Cycle Sluts...
when she realised what she had Done, she also killed herself
(I know the riddle didn't say that the bicycles were Shot,
but that was obviously Implied thru the Wording)

    that was too easy!
put up a harder one Mister Bahr!

For anyone who's interested, and has web access, I was recently browsing
through Guitar World Online, and they have a lesson from JP on some sort of
guitar playing. (I have absolutely no musical ability, so I don't know what
he's talking about.) Here's the first paragraph from the lesson, though.

Want to know a remarkably simple way to sound hip? Just lift your index
finger off of the B and E strings when playing a major barre chord, allowing
them to ring out (I'm assuming that most of you know how to play barre
chords). Yes, friends, adding nothing but the open E and B strings to a
major barre chord will drastically change its makeup and expand its harmonic
function. Plus, as an extra bonus, not having to barre the chord makes it a
    cinch to finger.

For those interested in seeing the whole document, it's at
    http://www.guitarworld.com/oct95/lessons/lesson3/le.pet1.html

    Hope you guitar players enjoy.

I don't think you can wear out a CD. You may want to try cleaning the
laser or something. They sell cd player cleaning kits. My friend has one.
Also, your player may be old and starting to burn out. I am not an expert on
Cd players, but try putting your Awake Cd in another player and go to the
skipping part and see if it skips. you may be a bit surprised.

    Hi everyone,

Don't panic, dearest jammers, I've seen this kind of thing happen before, and
I think every Rush fan has also, whenever a new photo of Neil Peart is
    released <G>...

Last year, after Kevin left the band, someone started a rumor about him
having AIDS and that being the real reason he left the band. This person
also claimed to have "confirmed" reports from Kevin's friends & relatives.
Of course, this wasn't the case. When I told Kevin about it, he laughed his
ass off. Yet many people believed it because this person stated it so
emphatically as "the truth." Why someone would start such a horrible rumor,
I have no idea. Just bored, I guess. :/

The point being, Kevin looked quite healthy the last time I saw him and he's
never mentioned anything to me or anyone else I know who knows him about
having an "advanced" state of cancer, or any other disease for that matter.
I guess anything is _possible_ considering I haven't actually asked Kevin
about this point blank, but I suggest taking this rumor as just that, and add
a generous helping of salt while you're at it.

Seth Dasman, or Greg Gasser, or whoever you are at "applogic@xnet.com," you
have an open invitation to e-mail me privately to explain the origins of your
"sources" who gave you these "confirmed reports."

Kev's practically bald now because he's going for a different image & it's
hot in LA in the summer, not because his hair all fell out from chemotherapy,
    ok? :)

Hang tight people. I'm sure Kevin would appreciate the outpouring of
    concern. :)

    Take care everyone,

    Hi all !

I am planning to take Jam printouts for M Portnoy ( and any other DT member
who's interested ) to read in Japan.
If anybody has given him recent ones at the clinics, please let me know
    what numbers
he already has. I'll take the rest to him when I go ( on the 25th ).

    Jam on,

    Dan

PS: Any preliminary talks about a JAM get together in NJ before the Birch
    Hill show ???
I'm from Boston, but my wife and I are gonna make the trip to the show ( a
    christmas present
to each other, can you think of anything better !! :) )

    Hi all !

I was hoping another Keyboard player would start this thread.
( I guess I could have started it myself but I've been feeling rather
distracted lately. Just can't get my mind off the upcoming show in
       T O K Y O !!! I still can't believe this trip is happening ! )

    My rig:

Roland JV 80 w/ pop expansion and drum kit PCM
    Korg Wavestation SR
    Digitech 256XL multieffects
    Mackie 1202 mixer
Akai DR4D 4 track hard disk recorder

BTW, any other Jammers making the trip to Japan for the show ??
If so, lets meet up before the show. I'm already setting up a meet
with several Japanese Jammers. Should be a great time !!

Also, just got tickets for the Birch Hill gig in NJ. Any NJ jammers
help out with directions from the Tpke or the Parkway. ( I'm semi-familiar
    with the area )

    Jam on ! ( and Sayonara ) ,

    Dan

PS: Have seen several people complaining about favs and lists, etc etc.
Why don't we take a vote
to do all list collections off line like several of the polls recently.
Send votes on this subject to
me and I'll compile and post. Deadline for votes is the 24th.
