Does anyone know the words to this song on A Change of Seasons?
This is what I figured out. Some parts may be right while I'm sure that
    some are not.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

The roses in the window box and to the dew outside
Everything about this house is gonna grow and die
Well it doesn't seem a year ago to this very day
He said sorry honey if I don't change the pace but I can't face another day

And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh I care but to think of you with another man
I was playin rock n roll and you were just a fan
When my guitar couldn't hold me so I split the band

Love lies bleeding in my hands

I wonder if those changes have left a scar on you
All the fun and hoops of fire that you and I passed through
Your broke but I don't tell I prefer to think your happy now
While in the wind of change coming down your way girl, you'll make it back
    somehow

And love lies bleeding in my hand
Oh I care but to think of you with another man
I was playin rock n roll and you were just a fan
When my guitar couldn't hold me so I split the band

Love lies bleeding in my hands

    Thanks again!

To the person who defended Jason Fickett's review of ACoS:
Obviously, ACoS isn't for everyone. I wouldn't expect someone who
hated the album to go ahead and write a glowing review of it. But what he
wrote was not a review. It was a blatant, vicious attack on a genre of
music with DT merely being the vehicle for him to express his frustration.
He is not a critic, for he gave no criticism. Yes, I can see how one would
say that ACoS is long and drawn-out (I don't agree, but I can see where he
is coming from). What I fail to understand is the relevance of the artwork
and photography to the quality of an album. He blames them for being able
to play their instruments? Well, I hope one day Fickett writes a shitty
review of me; that way I'll know that I'm putting out quality stuff. In
short, I don't take him seriously, because his writing is a joke. Just my
    opinion.

I was reading over a couple of 'Jams from the past few days and I began to
think about the inside cover of ACoS when something struck me. From what
I've gathered so far, the lyrics of ACoS are centered around the death of
Mike Portnoy's mother in an airplane crash when he was young. So my
conclusion was that perhaps November 16 is the date of this crash? Anyone
    else have any ideas?

On a different note - I wish I could have gotten a chance to see Kevin Moore
live with Dream Theater. I've had I&W since sometime in 1993, but I wasn't
into them enough to ever try to find out some tour dates or anything. I
know that he was kind of a dud on stage (as far as his body motions and
expressions are concerned), but I really feel like I missed out on
something, especially since he's my favorite artist now. I hope that some
more of his demos make it to the surface sometime. To see him play
Metropolis and UaGM and Eve live would have been amazing. Live in Tokyo
just doesn't cut it. I saw Derek in Baltimore on what was about the 5th
show of the Awake tour and thought he was pretty good for the amount of time
that he had to prepare for the concert. My question is - can he write
lyrics that sound like poetry when not played to music? (Wait for Sleep is a
good example of this). Oh well, who knows? (until the next album, anyway)

A final note - does anyone have a tape of that Baltimore show? I know a lot
of jammers were there, but I've never heard of a recording surfacing.
Quality doesn't matter - it would be kind of cool to have a boot of a show
    you went to though.

And I quote, "ANd you will enjoy, because this is basically a good album."!
Ok, there is some stuff about how Dt gets a bit overwrought at times, and
how ACOS "ends up being this great big technical chopfest that borders on
being a trainwreck-BUT IT WORKS" So, compared to some reviews posted here
and on a.m.d-t, this review is great! Anyone else have a "positive

I have been thinking much the same thing, actually. It ranks as the first
and only DT song that didn't 'grab' me. Don't get me wrong, it is an OK
song, but it definately isn't any Metropolis or AMBI.

    Hello there.

I guess I'll add to the two somewhat old threads going on here.
How I got into DT. A friend lent me a disc, he thought I'd like it
because I worshiped Kansas. I listened to it, and wasn't that impressed
except for WfS, which I copied onto a tape. I went for about 4 months
before I ordered IaW from Columbia, simply because I had nothing else to
order and was craving WfS on disc. When I got the disc I popped it in and
PMU came on. WOW! - seems all those complex melodies and kick ass riffs and
all had been bouncing around in my head for a few months. I couldn't get
enough of that disc - everything on it seemed familiar and really good.
(except I thought I had gotten a bad disc because of the end of PMU) THe
    rest is history.
Other things I listen to because of DT. I started out with Kansas,
then DT. Because of a friend who has a unique idea of progressive I ended
up listening to Fates Warning, King's X, Anacrusis, Lillian Axe (anyone
listen to 'em?) + Savatage. I have to admit, I'm essentially ignorant of
Rush. I own their last album, and have listened to their first. I find it
hard to believe that they are both from the same band. Last weekend I
listened to 2112, and was fairly impressed. Is there any generally
aknowledged "golden age" of Rush? What's considered their best?
Okay, the new potential thread: When those poor DT virgins ask me
what DT sounds like, I usually end up saying "progressive metal" which only
confuses them more. I've heard it said that DT sounds like Yes meets
Metallica. I'm not sure how accurate that is, as I haven't listened to Yes
much (should I?). Actually, now that I think about it, the only way to
explain DT to someone is by thrashing them around with Metropolis, LtL, and
Lie at about 500 watts (or maybe something else, depending on your tastes I
guess). Forget this thread! DT must be experience to be appreciated!
    They're beyond words!
Do any other jammers listen to Lillian Axe?

    Long live the Revolution! -Matt

I agree with the last statement (well, all of it really). The first
song in the set was "Outside Looking In." and I totally loved it
though I usually skipped it when playing the album. Monument kicks
ass either way, though. They are really a *great* live band. Too bad

I for one did not expect Cygnus to sound as good as Rush live albums. It
may sound better than many Rush boots but all the Rush boots I own sound far
better than Cygnus! For example, it is a fact (not my opinion) that "La
Villa Strangiato" and "Rush 'N' Roulette '92" sound light years better
than Cygnus. Since Cygnus was advertised as sounding better than "Rush
'N' Roulette '92" (and year of the recoding was not originally mentioned
as a variable) I assumed that Cygnus would in fact sound better than this
boot. This is not a flame against Mike! Cygnus is entertaining to
listen to and I respect Mike for his efforts.
Mike, I can understand if you were flamed for this... Perhaps your
original opinion of the sound quality of Cygnus was a too enthusiastic
and a little biased. I can see why some people were disappointed by the
CD. You made it out to be the best sounding Rush boot ever ("beyond
comparison" was the phrase used) and it simply is not even in the top 5.

Just be objective when advertising future CD projects and you can avoid
    flames....

(I'll stop ranting now - yes, lately I have more time on my hands than usual
and Rush is my favorite band (since 5th grade) :)

    Anyway,

This is going to be a doozy, so prepare yourselves:
This post is mainly in response to the review of ACOS by one Jason
Fickett at Arizona State U. First of all, I must state that I am not going to
voice my abhorrence experienced from reading his doltish review, for this has
already been done. I am merely here to support John Haveman's comment that we
should not pursue this by finding his e-mail address (if he has one) and
flaming him. Not necessarily because it wouldn't do any good, but because we
do not need to waste our time.
The main reason for this post stems from my Ethics reading which I am
currently delving through. It talks about the judgment of others based upon
how much you know about the other person. I should say that none of us are
really qualified to judge Mr. Fickett because we do not know him personally.
All we have to go on is what we derive from his review, where (IMO) it can be
plainly seen that he does not listen to progressive music, esp from his state-
ment that he could "see exactly where the music was going" [paraphrased]. I
sincerely doubt this, because (IMHO) I believe that even the most dedicated,
hard-core DT fan (with all 130+ bootlegs) would not be able to guess the
outcome of a new DT song on his/her first listen. George Thoroughgood (who I
love dearly), most definitely. All you have to do there is count the measures
and you can figure out the whole song within the first 15 to 20 secs.
Since Mr. Fickett does not listen to prog and obviosly does not like
DT, we should take his review with a grain of salt, or not even take it at all.
There may be some people, however, who read his review and go right out and
listen to ACOS. This comes from the knowlege that one of my friends watches
Siskel & Ebert just to see which movies they "Thumbs Down" to find out what
movies he'll like. I can personally relate to this "reverse psychology" theory
from when I bought Extreme's "III Sides To Every Story" (IMO, the most well
thought-out concept album of all time) after reading a negative review in a
major music mag (either SPIN or Rolling Stone) where the author said that
Extreme was "feebly attempting to create a '70s rock feel while stealing riffs
and ideas from major '70s rock groups." He also stated that the orchestrated
part during the epic "Everything Under The Sun" in part III "Who Cares?" showed
a "lack of ingenuity" and a general cop-out on the part of the band. I had
only heard one song, "Rest In Peace," when I bought the album JUST because of
the negative review, and the fact that they printed a picture of 4 flowers with
one of the band members' heads in the center of each. This guy was really
    living under a rock.
So let's not be too hard on Mr. Fickett. He obviously has better
things to do with his time than be enlightened by the Greatest Band in All The
    World.
My dos centavos (apologies for the length).

(Please forgive me if this has already been sent out. The JAM digest order seems to be skipping a number more often than usual, or I'm not getting all my email at this address in due course. I know the mail majordomo has had problems at this end.)

I know that ACOS & AD are the mainstay of current topics, but I feel obliged to give the answers to my last set of trivia. If anyone out there is interested in more, just say so, otherwise I'll probably desist for a bit and stay more in lurker mode until I get my new Email address at my new job. I'm way behind in reading the JAM, so please forgive me if some of these are already answered.

..Someone suggested an even closer tie betweeen Yes & West Side Story: I don't know, but would appreciate the info.

Thanks for those who posted the info. Its just that I haven't had the $$ to get any of the boxed sets yet.

What band did Rick Wakeman play with before Yes? What was the complete original name of that band? Which short-term member of this band also made a guest appearance on which Led Zepplin song? What band was this person most closely associated with?

RW played with the Strawbs. The original name for the band was 'The Strawberry Hill Boys'; blue-grass-type music was in vogue in England at the band's inception, and showed up later in some of their pieces, although progessive is the best description for what the band became. Someone asked about the titles of the albums on which RW appeared with the Strawbs: I don't have them in front of me, but the first was '..Collection of Curios and Antiques' and the second was ..Witchwood' or something similar. Sandy Denny, who did the fem vocal on Zep's 'Battle of Evermore Forest' was a short-time member of the Strawbs, later with 'The Fairport Convention'

    >>>New Yes Trivia question: Which band did Tony Kaye, original Yes' keys, >>>go to after he left Yes? With whom did he later record a >>>'Christmas'-season song?

Tony Kaye formed the band 'Badger', after leaving Yes; the well-known Yes (etc.) album cover artist Roger Dean also did a Badger album cover. Forget the 2nd part, my memory betrayed me: Chris Squire & Alan White did a Christmas single with 'Return of the Fox' and 'Running with the Fox'

    >>>>>>>Since no one has yet answered this question, I will leave it as a >>>>>>>continuing/new triva question:

Which other well-known rockband (not necess. prog) also plays(played) a piece based on the Broadway musical 'Westside Story?' (hint the original composer's name was included in the song credits; new hint, the front man for this band was also a guest on the 'Muppet Show'; another hint, Vincent Price did some narration for an album video by this band.)

Yes, Derek was a member of Alice Copper's band in 'Wayne's World'

..Thanks to those who posted the answers to this question.

As to the 'crunchy Hammond organ sounds' on ACOS & some of the covers:

That crunchy sound is what make/made Hammond organs the mainstay axe for many of the original progessive/metal key gods: Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Rod Argent, Patrick Moraz, Jon Lord, Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep), etc. The sound is/was a result of the tube electronics, real spring reverb/tremolo (sp?) and the infamous mechanical Leslie speaker cabinets.

However, I would venture that the 'Hammond Organ' used on ACOS was really a sound from an electronic keyboard emulator/sampler; IMHO, even with the crunchy sound its seems a bit too 'clean' if you would compare it to recording by the keymen mentioned above. Even KE toured with an electronic keyboard emulator/ sampler in place of his Hammonds for a number of years, although he has had his Hammonds refurbished for use on ELP's more recent tours.

BTW, Did Kevin, or does Derek, actually use a Hammond on any DT recordings/ tours? I haven't heard/found WDADU (yet, someone willing to dub me a copy?)), and the only place on IAW or Awake where I can clearly recall hearing a Hammond-like sound is the key part underlying the opening vocals on UAGM.

If you wnat to hear that 'real-crunchy Hammond sound' check out Jon Lord's keys on the early-mid 70's Deep Purple albums (also the original Perfect Strangers) and Ken Hensley's stuff from the same era with Uriah Heep (a very Deep Purple- type band, if you've never heard of them before; Roger Dean also did some of their album covers as well.)

Well so much ranting and raving for now.

    I couldn't pass this up.

--What classic rock song by whom also contains the line "Brain Salad Surgery" (Hint--Its not ELP I'm looking for.) This goes back to the 70's.

--ELP did record a song called "Brain Salad Surgery" in conjunction with the album of the same name; however it did not appear on that album, but is on ELP's "Works vol.2." Led Zepplin recorded a song called "Houses of the Holy" that did not appear on their album of the same name, but on Physical Grafitti. The Doors recorded a song called "Waiting for the Sun", that did not appear on their album by the same name, but did come out on a later album. Does anyone else out there know of any other songs by a particular band which were also album names, but did not appear on the album by that same name?

I know that this has no DT content, except that circumstance, including the Zep medley on ACOS and other events brought these questions to light.

Greetings Jamlings, Before I go any further, I just want to make it clear that I am thirteen years old. This way (no offense Jay) I won't get anymore offers to move to Florida all the way from Las Vegas (no matter how much I'd like to). Anyways, in a couple of days the legions of Dream Theater fans could be two persons larger. One is a fellow drummer and Mike Portnoy could be the kickstart to the birth of a new DT fan. The other is a girl that I don't know too terribly well (although I am "interested" in her, if ya catch my drift), but I'm going to try to give her a "sampler tape" of some DT goodies which includes:Another Day, Surrounded, Wait For Sleep, The Silent Man and ACoS. I don't want to give her anything too metallish; I have no idea what kind of music she likes. Well, I'll keep you posted on the outcome of my little scheme.

Ok Jammers. Here we are with the first disection. I will try to all the songs in order. So naturally I am starting with 6:00. However, I have started with songs in the middle of the album, so it may be like three or four days until CiaW. Anyways, 6o' is in the categorie of storyline, with some thoughts from the inside, but not enough to fall into innerfeelings as well. (what a run-on) Ah, yes, before I forget. I am using Webster's dictionary for definitions. So here we go. First, a message from our sponser- "t #'s" is the time in the music. "--- and some words" are my interpretations. "?" means I could not understand what the heck is being said, so help if you know the answer. Keep in mind that this is MY interpretation. So if you disagree with me, please do not flame. If you need to resond to me, please do, either to me, or if everyone needs to hear it, then on the Jam. Some of my timing marks may be off by a few secs, so dont be so critical of that. I cant always read my chicken scratch.

    _6:00_

t 0:00-0:54 Music and "Six o'clock on a xmas morning" --- A man usually has a commitment to his family on xmas morning.

t 0:54-0:59 ?..."But is it for the honor of G-d Aunt Kate?" "I know all about the honor of G-d Mary Jane."

t 1:01 "Six o'clock and a siren kicks him from a dream / tries to shake it off but it just wont stop." ---def. _siren_ a seductively beautiful...woman, esp one who beguiles men. An acoustical warning device. Which def of siren should be used? Both. The woman is leading him dangerously astray from his commitment, his wife and family. The warning signal to say that he is being led astray.

"Can't find the strength but he's got promises to keep / and wood to chop before he sleeps." ---here, promises is synonymous with commitment, and wood to chop is jsut one of those commitments.

"I may never get over / but never's better than now / I've got bases to cover." ---This is the man talking to himself. In other words, he is saying that he may never put an end to this thing of his. But he thinks that living in this fantasy world is better than what the real world is.

t 1:40 "He's in the parking lot / just sitting in his car / its 9:00 but he cant get out." ---where is this parking lot? Perhaps at toy store. Afterall, it is xmas morning. This is the commitment part of it. The parking lot could also be at the apartment building of the siren, where he is debating ("cant get out")wether or not to get out of the car and go see her.

"He lights a cigarette / and he turns the music down / but just cant seem to shake that sound" ---He is smoking to try and relax. The loud music is possibly giving him a headache. However, the music is a metaphore for the siren calling him, and he is trying to tune her out. NOt shaking the sound means his dick is telling him to get out of the car and go see her, even though his conscience is telling him not to.

"Once I thought I'd get over / but its to late for me now / Ive got bases to cover" ---Here he is talking to himself again. He thought that he could end his hiatus, however, he has not got the will power to do so anymore

t 2:11 "Melody walks thru the door / and memory flies out the window / and nobody knows what they want / till they finally let it all go" ---melody is the siren again. Memory is his wife/family. When he hears the siren calling, he totally forgets all about his family. ---"nobody...." means that you cant figure out what it is that you want from life until you take the coal out of your ass and relax and live for a while.

t 3:14 "The pain inside / coming outside" (x4) ---In other words, the pain that he is feeling is starting to show.

t 4:12 "So many ways to drown a man / so many ways to drag him down / some are fast and some take years and years." ---There are many ways to kill a mans soul. Some are quick and painless, while some are slow and painful.

"Cant hear what he's saying when he's talking in his sleep / finally found the sound but he's in too deep." ---Here, the man is either saying things in his sleep, or he just says things when he is not really paying attention. Once you finally figure out what he is saying, he is either sleeping too deeply to understnd anymore, or he's has realized what he is saying and that he has duga hole for himself that he wont be able to get out of, and he shuts up.

"I could never get over / is it too late for me now / feel like blowing my cover" ---The man has realized that he has no will power to return from his hiatus. However, he is having second thoughts about things and cannot decide wether he should bring things out in the open or not

"Melody...go / but dont cut your losses too soon / cause you'll only be cutting your throat / and answer a call while you still hear it all / cause nobody will if you wont" --Here the man is giving himself advice that no one cando thing s for him. In other words, Mike Portnoy cant go on stage and play John Petrucci's Guitar Pparts for him.

Basically, we have a scene in the story where the man is starting to figure things out. He realizes probably the most important thing, that things do not just fix themselves.

There you go, my friends. Like I said, no flames please. And please dont tell me that I am wrong. It is my OPINION. That guy who gave that shitty review to ACOS was not wrong, it was his opinion. He just did not like it. Anyway, thanx to Rain King for the Lie single. Tim Adams...waiting to hear from you about the connecticut show on the 27th of dec. Everyone else, listen to EVERON. I dont hear Erotomania in ACOS. I hear the part that is in debate. They are similar, but not near the same.
