I've heard a few people in the jam list atomic opera as one of their favorite
bands. I had the opportunity to see them last year when they opened for Dio
in Palo Alto, CA. This was the first time I had ever heard of them; they
rocked big time! Ever since, I haven't been able to find any of their cd's
anywhere. If anyone can tell me what's available by them & where I might be
able to score a copy, I'd really appreciate it.

DT content: I just ordered the Mind Control bootleg today. I cant' wait to
    get it.

    (im)patiently waiting for Acoustic Dreams.

     I FINALLY GOT IT . . . ACOUSTIC DREAMS!!!
     ------------------------------------------

It is GREAT!!! The Cover artwork is PHENOMINAL, sort of a foreshadowing of
the music that you soon hear inside. Mike Bahr outdid himself. Heres My
quick review(only listened to it twice).

     - Another Day - Beautiful...Very Different

     - Lifting Shadows off a dream - AWESOME!!!

     - Wait For Sleep - This is the Guitar/Bass version they did in concert. A
    MUST HAVE!!!

     - Silent Man - Not much different than the album.

     - L.I.E. - Wicked COOL! completely different than ANYTHING I could have
    expected

     - Tears - Similar to SUBCON Version

     - O Holy Night - Awesome, James Voice is INCREDIBLE on this...would love to
hear a STUDIO Version with Electric Guitars...Similar to the SUBCON version
    with James Singing.

     - Perfect Strangers (w/Bruce Dickenson) - AWESOME, similar to ACOS, but Bruce
has such a great voice(Not that James Doesn't). (Mike Bahr - I know Mike
Portnoy get complementary copies of these CD's, but was wondering will Bruce
Dickenson, I would be a shame for him if he did not have a copy of this.)

     - Six O Clock - Similiar to Awake...a little different sounding.

     - Caught In a Web - Same as 6:00

To Michael Bahr - GREAT JOB, when can I order WDATU??? Keep up the great work.

     Other Notes:

     For the record .... My other favorite Bands are;
        1. Whitesnake
        2. Stryper
        3. Fates Warning
        4. Steve Vai
        5. Amy Grant
        6. Barren Cross

To those people who went to the Providence Rhode Island Show,

Was I the only person who noticed that Dereks Solo contained a Keyboard
Version of Van Halens Eruption, or was it just My imagination? Dereks Solo
    was awesome.

     In Jam #1027 Rick Wrote.............

    >He also played the right handed fingering for Chopins Etude #2. <

What the hell is Etude #2? All my chopin CD's have etudes that reference key
signatures (Etude in C Sharp Minor), or are named ("Revolutionary" Etude...My
    Favorite). Am I missing something?

     About the Burning Heart...

Yes, It is a symbol Jesus Christ in the Catholic Religion. I once read an
interview with Mike Portnoy in a Christian Heavy Metal Magazine called
"Heavens Metal" in which he said Pull Me Under was a cross between the story of
Hamlet and Jesus Christ. This fits in with line in the song "only until you
will is done"... which refers to the christ said (at Gethsemenie??) "Not my
will but yours be done father (paraphrased)". Also this fits in with the idea
that the album cover has symbols from all the songs. The heart would
represent Christ in the song pull me under.

     Connecticut Residents:

For those of you in Connecticut....My friend said he found a record store that
had a whole rack of DT Bootlegs... I am checking this out this weekend.. I'll
let you know if I find anything.

And Yes, I will be at the El-N-Gee on Dec 27, hopefully with about 5-15
people, that I have converted to DT fans.

music. Mine was sold to a used CD store within an hour of buying it.

    a fat guy?
Possibly, but usually it's the same guy who builds his racks <and J. Myung's>. I
saw this in a British "Guitar Techniques" magazine. Ultra-cool issue, A-Z of
Rock - D for Dream Theater. It had a full story on DT, a full transcription of
"Under A Glass Moon" and the "Face The Rack" section had John's rack-builder
Mark Snyder. When John's tech isn't with him, Mark will play tech. After all, he
knows the equipment better than the "fat guy" tech.

    Hey whats up Jammers,
I read that someone in the NYC area is looking for a good CD store.
I have searched all throughout Manhattan and LI and only one store has
totally blown me away with its selection of rare CD's and imports (as
well as posters, shirts, videos, novelty, etc.) The store is called:

    Slipped Disc
    68 Rockaway Ave.
    Valley Stream, N.Y. 11580
    (516) 872-0516

It is AMAZING. Totally blows away those other so-called import shops
(yeah great..like I could possibly care about 200 different imports by
Hole or Green Day!!)Anyhow, it is a really cool little shop in Valley
Stream and I would DEFINITELY recommend making the trip from Manhattan
(probably an hour if you take LIE to Cross Island or taking Belt to
Southern State)..I live in Queens and with no traffic it takes me about
15-20 minutes. To give you an idea..the first time I went, I could not
believe their selection and ended up charging around $200!!!

Dream Theater thanks them on WDADU and so does SAVATAGE on "Hall
of the Mountain King". It holds extreme value to me because last
winter (think it was Feb or March??) as my friend and I walked through
the door.....guess who is in there.... Mike Portnoy and his wife!!!!!
I couldnt believe how calm I was..at first we just gave each other a
look like..NAH..COULDNT BE HIM....we dont have that kind of luck! Then
like some kind of secret service I'm trying to listen to what hes
talking about and buying..I remember he was interested in some Frank
Zappa stuff and a poster of Resovoir Dogs (AWESOME movie BTW!!)..

Anyhow, instead of bothering him inside the nice warm cozy
store, me and my friend (rocket scientists that we are) decide to wait
till he finishes shopping and talk to him outside in frigid arctic
weather..nice plan huh?? Well, Mike was real cool and talked with us
for about 5-10 minutes..(talked about upcoming Fates tour, Mikkey Dee
and Dean Castronova stuff, Malmsteen at Foundations, etc)..Bottom line
was that he was a REAL nice guy and easy to talk to! The manager at
Slipped told me he always comes by on vacation time and stuff. COOL!!
    LI RULES!!!!HEHE

What was I talking about..oh yeah..if you want an awesome selection
of hard to find CD's and other stuff go to Slipped Disc.

I'll be at Malibu also..was there last time too with Echolyn
opening!! Fellow Ytse Jammers just look for a guy with a grey Fates
Warning shirt and a denim jacket with a HUGE portrait of EDDIE (of Iron
Maiden) on the back! See you all there!!!!

I hope my .SIG doesnt get all scrambled on other peoples servers...it
    took me long enough...

    Cheers,
    Carlo

Just kidding, well except for the last group. But can this thread please come to an end? Someone already mentioned that Rush, FW, ELP, etc. seem to be everyone's favorites. OK...now we know who the fav. bands are. I could be wrong about this, but didn't the person that started this thread ask us to email him privately on our favorite bands? Anyway, we might as well just stop this thread, because some new jammer in the months to come will want to know what our favorite bands are, and then we can start this thread all over again.

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Just wanted to jump in on the guitar equipment thread:

Jackson Kelly Standard Deep Metallic Purple Yamaha Acoustic FG-411 Black (autographed by John Myung, Mike Portnoy, and Derek Sherinian in silver ink) Carmen acoustic (piece o crap, but I sort of like the sound it gives, my first guitar)

Crate 30W amp (piece o crap, I need a new amp) ZOOM 9000 effects pedal (gives a pretty good sound)

What I want for Christmas: Ibanez JPM100 John Petrucci custom guitar (hopefully my parents would think I was good this year!!)

Well, that's my setup. What did you expect from someone who worked at Waldbaums for only $6/hr during high school?

    Yours, Jeff =)

I think ticketmaster is selling the tickets (well, they sold them for the last DT show at malibu). I wouldn't chance buying tickets at the door. If they sell out, your sh*t out of luck. I do have an easy solution to this problem....how about CALL THEM!!! You HAVE the number..Dial it! oh yea, BTW, Malibu is NOT in NYC....it is on Long Island. Lido Beach.

Date: Tue, 17 Oct 1995 22:46:47 -0700 (MST) From: Rich ROchelle <rr@asu.edu> To: Dream Theater <ytsejam@anthor.arastar.com> Subject: guitar (bass) rigs Message-ID: <01HWKB5PEHSI8YA9ZX@asu.edu>

Y'know, I've pretty much always liked to hear what other people play, if only to remind me that it's not only me who can't afford Mesa/Boogie amps and really expensive basses (say, like Wal, or Tobias, or Tung, or an electric upright). In any case, (whether it be bass or guitar- HA), I'm currently playing an Ibanez SR885(LE, I think- it's one of the older ones with the "LO-Z and HI-Z" pickups (which, due to their really low output for "active" pickups, in my opinion, suck)) through a Trace Elliot 7210HSM (200W 2x10" combo with horn). The Trace sounds beautiful in my opinion, but, just like CDs "show the limitations of the source tape", it shows the limitations of my bass. My dream bass is a Tobias Zebra wood 5 string. Since they run in the ballpark of $3000, it could be a really long time before I even can consider purchasing one. Eventually, I want to add a 15" to my rig to round out my tone. This could happen within my lifetime. (Yes!) Anyway, on with the jam! Rich "no sig" Rochelle

Whoosh!! So many 'jams, so little time...

    ----------

    What's my setup?

Guitar: BC Rich American-Series Ironbird. Black. Amp: Crate G80XLS w/Celestion Speaker. Black. Effects: Digitech DSP-128. Silver.

Yes, that's it. I've had this setup since January of 1992. The only other pieces I've owned are (1) a BC Rich Platinum-Series Virgin, and (2) a BOSS HM-2 (heavy metal) distortion pedal. The Virgin I sold, and the HM-2 I don't use anymore.

    ----------

What DT songs DON'T I like? Coincidentally, just like all the other lists flying around, I have five:

    1. Status Seeker 2. Another Day 3. Surrounded 4. Erotomania 5. Space Dye Vest

These are the songs that I find myself skipping over when I listen to the cds. So it's safe to assume that I just don't like these songs as much as the others. I must agree with Mike Portnoy when he gave the reason they changed the intro to "Status Seeker" for the live shows. For those of you who don't know, according to Mr. Portnoy it was "Fuckin' GAY."

You know, it's always nice when a member of a band can be straightforward about why things happen.

    A Seattle Jammers Luncheon?

Actually, the original e-mail I sent to Rahul Ananda was about a possible University of Washington 'Jammer meeting, but I guess the fellow wanted to move it to a larger scale. Well, someone want to suggest a meeting time and place?

In fact, let me one-up you, Rahul. Wanna make it a Washington State sort of happening? Wanna do a Ytsecon on a micro-level? Are there any Northwest 'Jammers that would like this sort of occurance to occur?

    ----------

Who did I leave off my list of honorable mentions? Eric Johnson.

    ----------

Who stole the cookie from the cookie jar? AIRDANCE!!!

    ----------

    To WildKoba:

You have Steve Vai listed as "4a" beneath Joe Satriani "4." I disagree with the statement "they might as well go together." In my opinion Vai is much more of a musical acrobat than Satriani. They both exhibit immense control, and this is one of their common trademarks, but to my ears Vai is a great deal more aggressive and insane than Satch.

You know, those two have always reminded me of Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan Kenobi in more ways than one. (...or would that be Darth Vader and The Emperor?)

    Bafu Vai

p.s. are there any tennis fanatics on the 'jam?

Man, I'm gonna kill. I mean it. First of all, this bonehead Dan Reeves forgets how to coach an NFL team. Then, this moron DJ on Burlington's WIZN totally screws up my request. I found out that this guy is from LI, as am I. So, I'm in, right? Wrong! I call up and say, "Hey, Dave! Hey, this is Chris. I'm a student at UVM, but I heard that you're from the Island." "Yeah," he says, "I used to work for WRCN." "No shit! That's the station that gave my band our first airplay," I tell him. "Anyways, I was hoping that you could play some hometown boys for me." "Zebra?" No, science rocketist. "Actually, I was thinking about Dream Theater." "Oh, they're cool. I'll get some on." So, at this point, I'm stoked. Good things about LI, good things about his former employer, good things about DT. Then I push my luck. "You know, Dave, I haven't heard anything from Satch's new album. Think you could get some of that on as well?" "Oh, yeah. That's a great album. Yada yada yada." So what happens? I wait up for half a fucking hour to hear "Satch Boogie, going out to Chris at UVM, who's from New York!" Dick. I hate stupid people.

Anyway, violently grinding gears, I forget who it was that wrote about anti-ex-girlfriend-depression tunes, but I've got a couple of killers. First, try some Rush. It'll get you thinking about everything but her! Then, if that don't work, pop in VH's _5150_ and play the song "Get Up." If that doesn't pick your spirits up, then just stay in bed for a week, 'cause you're dangerous.

Okay guys I'm really pissed off!

    1) I'm pissed off because I don't ever know about these clincs (John P and M Portnoy)!!! I am a devout DT follower and I want to be informed about this stuff. Next time one of you goes to a clinic, please find out as many other places an dates as you can.

    2) I am pissed off because of all this talk of DT going to NJ or Long Island. I don't even know where the hell Long Island is... I just know its too far for me to drive to.

    3) I'm pissed off because I'm so broke I have to suffer by listening to all you guys talk about AD and me over here in Jacksonville Fl having to take out a lone to pay for a speeding ticket.

    4) I'm pissed off because I go out of town for a long weekend and being forced, because of my dedication (and addiction) to DT, I spend two hours, when I should be studying, reading 13 back jams!

    5) I'm pissed because of Eudora not downloading large messages (it does this to about 30% of my jams.) Any suggestions out there?

    6) I'm pissed cause, because of this I try out a different mail software and lose 4 jams!

    7) I'm pissed because I dont have a "Mercy fuck" to make me feel better!

    :( :( :-(

Mike may not need it, but I need your sympathy to get me through the day!

    8) --(Trey to Ytsejam members)-- Sorry to wine guys, I just needed to get that out of me. You guys mean so much to me. (sniff) I just feel like we're a family and (sniff) and I can share anything with you all. (sniff sniff) You guys have become such a special (INTERUPTED)

---(you guys to Trey)--- NO TREY YOU CAN"T HAVE OUR COPY OF ACOUSTIC DREAMS!

---(Trey to Rush mailing list)--- Guys, you just are such a great bunch of people. I feel that we have just bonded so much in these...

I have one question. Who invented punk rock? You know, that talentless form of music played by people who can't even tune their guitars? I swear, I hear songs played by bands who don't know how to turn the tuning pegs on their guitars. To punk rockers, soloing is cranking up the volume until you feed back. All those punk rock songs sound the same. Lifeless three-chord crap songs with no skill, no technical ability, no creativity, no talent. the vocalists can't even sing, hell they can't even scream. the drummer is lucky that they can keep a basic beat. And they don't even use keyboard players, and thank God for that because we are too good for that stuff. Besides, keyboard players make their own form of bullshit called techno, another form of music that lacks talent, except when they are sampling other artists music. Now for the question: why is techno and punk held in such high regard while progressive rock, which displays infinite amounts of talent and technique, gets bashed constantly. In classical and Jazz music, great musicians are held in hgih regard. In rock, we ar trashed. It's bullshit. We don't put all this time into our instruments to have some lesser forms of musical life say that we suck. Blind lemon should be hung. Fuck them, they don't deserve the fame they have. I have been playing a keyboard for 17 years, and I am not even close to a Kevin or a Derek, but I am always improving and have the drive to improve, unlike the Blind Lemon bastards. I feel sometimes like I have wasted my time training myself when all it's going to get me is frustrated. The listening public is mostly made up ofc ignorant idiots who can't open their minds to anything unless it sounds something like NIrvana, (don't get me started on that waste of time). Oh, well, I've ranted enough. Go ahead. Flame me. I DEAR YOU. FLAME AWAY. I AM READY, DAMN IT. Here, have my email address. s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. flame me, you'll be sorry.
