This is in response to the guy who said he wanted to know about our various
    setups.

Well, I am a drummer and I play Premier Signia Drums. I have two 18x22 bass
    drums, a 9x10 tom, a 12x13 tom, a 13x14 tom,a 16x18 floor tom, and a 5
1/2x14 snare drum. I also sometimes add a 16x16 floor tom from an old
slingerland kit that I have for that added low end sound. I also sometimes
remove the 13x14 tom because it kind of gets in the way. I use Sabian
Cymbals. I have a 16 inch AA studio crash and an 18 inch AA crash. In
addition I have an 18 inch AA studio china and a 20 inch HH Ride Cymbal. My
Hi-Hats are CRAP! DAMN I HATE THEM! Any drumer with an extra set of decent
hi-hats who might pity someone like me feel free to send them over. I
occasionally use a cowbell in my setup but most often it isn't there. In an
interesting note, I use a seat with a back which is generally not common
amongst drummers. I don't know why, it gives great back support. Will
Calhoun gave me the idea(not personally). As far as sticks go, I generally
use Vic Firth or Promark 2B's although my favortie sticks are the Easton
Ahead Tommy Lee Studio Models. Yeah Yeah they are aluminum. I know, but I
love the feel of them. Right now these are my sticks of choice. They do
make me happy :)! Anyway, that's my set up. I know I didn't actually
diagram it but it is the basic way anyone would set up drums like that(I
know many of yuou won't know what that means, but it is too lat for me to go
    diagram it).

    Hope someone enjoys reading this.

I believe that it was ONLY released in the UK (not having the FAQ handy,
I cant say for sure) We can get it here in the U.S., though not ALWAYS
    easily...

Actually, it isnt on the German version of LatM, but IS on the Japanese
version (which, conversely, doesnt have Surrounded) but since the
Japanese version is much harder to get (and more expensive) the guys were
cool enough to put it on the Lie CD single...:)

I got mine at Best Buy, and I believe that it is available elsewhere, in
addition to its being available for order.

    hi there,

apart from our all-common faves besides DT ( such as Queensryche, Savatage,
Rush etc.) is there anybody who's into Kyuss and Warrior Soul as well?
I think they are two of the most exciting bands I ever had the pleasure to
listen to, so the latest news of Kyuss having broken up means a great loss
    to me..

I noticed that a few 'jammers listed Savatage as one of their favorite
bands and one even mentioned Criss Oliva as his favorite guitarist. My
question is what happened to Criss Oliva? On A Handful of Rain, there's a
song dedicated to the memory of Criss Oliva. I take it he died, but does
anyone know HOW he died? I'm also wondering why Jon Oilva didn't do
vocals on AHoR. Was it maybe because he was too emotionally distraught
over his brother's death that he couldn't sing? I know he does some of
the keyboards, plus he co-produced the album. They have a different
singer, though I must admit I like the new singer over Jon. He sounds
sort of like James Hetfield. Jon has a decent voice, but it's scratchy at
times, at least on Streets, the only other Savatage album I have besides
    A Handful of Rain.

Anyway, I DO recommend Savatage to DT fans. The music is excellent even
if the vocals aren't up to par with James LeBrie (then again, whose voice
IS up to par with LeBrie?). The song "Chance" on AHoR is VERY cool.
Streets also offers a nice concept album with some cool songs that rock
as well as meaningful ballads. It's not quite Mindcrime, though.

Hey, I gave her an honorable mention. I'm still waiting for a follow-up to
"Above, Below, and Beyond!" As for "live" shows, I don't think she's ever
toured the US. Anyone know if she has or will?

I wouldn't compare either of these guys as being similar, and yes, I like
them both. As for who's faster, Yngwie blows Eric away, and that is not
meant as an insult to Eric. I can't say who's "better," but Yngwie is most
    definitely "faster."

I believe the bootleg you are looking for is "Consciously Unreal."

My favorite high squeaky part is in Metropolis, when instead of singing
the line "I've found it's all caught up with me," he says something to the
extent of, "Ay FOUNDITSA CAUDAP WIMAAAAAY."

By the way, to any ytsesingers that aren't afraid to perform in public,
this line sounds really cool if you sing it in the middle of a crowded
store. Just announce it to everyone. Guaranteed to get attention (and fast
service) from oblivious workers. For more of a demonic effect, try this
when someone comes up and asks, "May I help you?" Just be sure you look
directly into their eyes when you answer with the above line.

Or you could try the check-out counter:

    "Paper or plastic, sir?"
"Actually, I think ay FOUNDITSA CAUDAP WIMAAAAAAYYYY!!"

Yes, and they were both in the South-East of England. I happen to live in the South-West of

I got tickets for Ronnie Scott's gig, but there was just no way I could get down to London.

Actually, they didn't release their second album in the States,
because they weren't satisfied with the sound. The album is being

    Hello all,

I'm looking for a good quality (prefer pro-shot) video of a DT show where
they do the song "Learning To Live".

I don't have much for trade, but if someone could e-mail me with any info on
this I would be very greatly. I've been looking for something like this for
a while and no one seems to want to respond.

Not to be a pain in the ass but I'm also interested in any FW (audio or
video) concerts that are good quality.

While I'm here, I might as well give you my vote for top 5 (non-DT)

    Bands:

    1. Fates Warning
    2. Rush
    3. Kiss (grew up with them)
    4. Yes
    5. Kansas

(HM: Sanctuary, Helloween, Sting, Iron Maiden, Ozzy, ELP, Queensryche,
almost anything except rap and that MTV "alternative/grunge/seattle/wannabe
    hippie" crap)

    Guitarists:

    1. John Petrucci
    2. Steve Vai
    3. Al DiMeola
    4. Frank Aresti
    5. Steve Howe

There are by far many more execellant guitar players out there and It's
impossible to limit it to five so consider this "five of my favorite", not
    "my five favorite".

Thanks for any info about the boots!!!

Hi from a wet and miserable Germany
Regular readers of my epigraphic (go look it up if you don't know what it
means) outpourings will possibly know that I have been urging you all to
'get into' a band called Kyuss. Well, it looks like you might be too late:
I have just heard that Kyuss have officially ceased to exist as of the 2nd
of October. All of you who know Kyuss and their music and what they stood for
will realise what a loss this is.
If you never saw the band live, the party is already over. But you can still
go out and buy the albums (warning: make sure that the woofers on you noise
boxes are in good shape before playing any of this stuff).
Sorry about the lack of DT content, but I really thought other Kyuss fans
    ought to know about this.

No, he doesn't even say it on LiT. I've heard from a boot (can't
recall which) that he pronounces it "it's a jam"...very fitting
    pronunciation...

On request, I will post a short review about these guys as soon as I get the
album...I ordered it today (Oct. 18) and may get it as soon as the 19th.
I've only heard 3 of their songs from recent compilations, but I'll offer
a short description now. They're sort of a mix of Machine Head/Pantera
but without the "cowboy" or hardcore punk sound and they have a definite
progressive edge. Complex rhythms and interesting chord structures but
all very powerful stuff. More when I hear the rest of the album.
            (dreem theeeater ruuuuules maaaaaan)
(could that be considered DT content?)
            thanks all for your time.

Well, here are my fave bands besides DT:

1- Queen (my fave group before discovering DT) 2- Van Halen (these guys know how to rock! anyway, I don't find "Drop dead legs" very progressive) 3- Soundgarden (I love odd time signatures, and this is one of the reasons why I love DT, too!) 4- Extreme (III sides to every story, as many others said, is one of my favourite albums of all time, but I really don't like the last one, Waiting for the punchline... am I the only one? And what do you know about Nuno's solo album?) 5- Nirvana, old Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains... I still like grunge.

I've just bought FW's Perfect Simmetry, and I'm going to listen to Rush... sorry for my musical ignorance..

What about Kevin having cancer?? Are you joking?? I couldn't stand it, Freddie Mercury's death is enough for me...

So what about DT's songs' musical interpretation? I've posted my little contribution some jams ago, and I hope some ytsejammers, maybe with a better musical knowledge, will post theirs. I play the keyboards, so I tend to listen to it more, and I don't understand some parts of guitar, bass, drums. Come on, post something!

Now, I know for a fact that I personally did not unsubscribe myself. Why do that, I still need to receive communication from Mike Bahr (I, however anxious and impatient, am not rude and refrained from grilling him when he stated the trouble he was having) and there are still a few good threads going on. I am not a list-server guru, so I do not know of all of the little intricacies of L-S protocol, but I do not believe it is possible for a 'Jammer to unsubscribe another 'Jammer (Ken Bibb: can you answer this for me?). The purpose of this post is not to accuse any 'Jammer of any wrong- doing, but to inform you all that this happened to me and may happen to you. 'Til whenever the light re-enters my account...

That's heart stopping to hear about Kevin. Of course I, as well as the rest of us I'm sure, wish him all the luck in the world. Of course if this is true about Kevin, it would explain the crew cut that he was reported to be sporting.

Many of you think that the greatest thing in the world would be to see DT and QR perform together in a show. I however, think that it would be far greater to see Kevin open for DT, especially in light of this new news about Kevin.

Good luck Kevin, where ever you are!!!!

    Greetings Ytsejammers,

This message is to try to gather support and volunteers for a movement currently being organized by the name of Operation: Revolution. Some of you may have already heard of this or be helping, but for those of you that haven't, please read this message and do whatever you can to help us out. The basic goal of Operation: Revolution is to protest the current programming practices of MTV (or eMpTyV as some like to call it). I'm sure most people can remember when rock, metal, and progressive rock/metal bands got airtime on MTV. Back when Queensryche released their Empire album, several songs of that album got wide recognition on MTV (Empire, Silent Lucidity, etc.). In contrast, how many times has each of you seen videos for I Am I, Bridge, Disconnected, etc. off the new Queensryche album? Not very many I'm afraid. This is not limited to Queensryche supporters only, although it began on the Queensryche group on Usenet. The example above is just that: an example. The same thing holds true for other bands. How many of you have seen Dream Theater videos on MTV? I think personally I saw Pull Me Under once and Lie twice. These bands deserve more recognition than that. Operation: Revolution intends to send MTV a message that fans of rock and metal are still here and we won't be silent any more. Our basic requests to MTV are these:

    1. More videos and less shows. After all, MTV originally stood for Music TeleVision. Cartoons and game shows don't seem to have very much to do with music.

    2. More coverage for rock/metal bands. Specifically, more diversity among the videos they play. A lot of the songs they play I happen to like quite a bit (Live, Bush, Candlebox, Alanis Morissette, etc.), but I'd rather see some of the other deserving bands get their fair share.

    3. Return of Headbanger's Ball or similar show. Maybe start a new show similar to Headbanger's Ball, but lean a bit more towards progressive rock/metal than always playing just death metal.

Operation: Revolution is being carried out in three main ways:

    1. Snail-mail campaign. Write MTV and let them know what you think. Recommend bands to them that you'd like to see get more coverage. Tell them if you don't like the proportion of game shows and cartoons as compared to videos and music-oriented programming.

One address for this is: ------------------------ MTV's Afternoon 1515 Broadway 23rd FLr. New York, NY (I missed the zip code today, but just watch for a while yourself and you can get an address to send to.)

    2. E-mail campaign. On the day of Halloween we are asking for all supporters of our goals to write an e-mail message to MTV voicing their support. It doesn't have to be fancy, but the point is to show how much interest there is out here. Try to be literate, intelligent, and non-vulgar. Our cause will see much better results if we can fill their mailbox with a large amount of intelligent mail, rather than if one guy sends hundreds of messages saying 'You suck' in the most interesting and vulgar ways he can think of. Please send *one* message to any *one* of these three addresses on *Halloween Day*.

    mtvmail@aol.com *or* feedback@mtv.com *or* mtvnews@mtv.com

Please send only one message to only one of these addresses on the day of Halloween. And *please*, no vulgarity. We are trying to keep this movement on an intelligent level.

    3. Most Wanted campaign. On the day of Halloween, we intend to gather as many supporters as possible and call up MTV's Most Wanted with votes for a song to be chosen. Currently, the song being favored is Anybody Listening? by Queensryche from the Empire album. We think if this song can be voted #1 on Most Wanted it will send a powerful message to MTV and to it's viewers. This facet of Operation: Revolution was only currently started, so I don't have the 800 number yet and we have yet to choose the song to vote for. As soon as this information is determined, I'll post it to here.

The important thing for the Most Wanted campaign is to support it no matter what song is chosen. We can't possibly pick a song that will please everyone, but we will try to pick the best representative song that will get our message across. Currently Anybody Listening is at the top of our list for a few reasons: great song, theme goes along with our movement, age of song helps make it stand out, never was very popular (makes it stand out more), and the roots of this movement were started by several Queensryche fans. The point is to pick a song that will stand out like a sore thumb and make people stop and take notice of us.

Now, on to the important stuff... what can *you* do to help?

If you wish to get involved in the organization of this thing, please e-mail Mick at hvaishn@emory.edu. You can e-mail me (ereed@comp.uark.edu) if you'd like, but Mick is the guy that knows what's going on and is really the founder of this. We still need lots of help getting this thing off the ground properly. Areas to be tackled: AOL, Compuserve, Delphi, Usenet, mailing lists, radio stations, etc.

If you don't wish to get involved on a large scale, we can still use your help getting this message out. E-mail all your rock/metal fan friends and let them know what's going on... forward them this message if you want. Tell anyone you think might be interested. Get the word out on the streets.

And most importantly: CALL AND WRITE MTV! It only takes a few minutes of time to write MTV a letter on Halloween or to call in a couple times to Most Wanted. We aren't asking much of your time to do this, just a few minutes to write an e-mail and to make a few phone calls. If you want to help with the organization more time is involved, but the possibilities if this thing goes well are endless... more airtime for the kind of music we like, more promotion of the bands you want to hear, more new music being released, etc.

I apologize for the length of this letter, but we feel this is a vital and important message to spread if we are to be successful. Thanks...

    Ed. ereed@comp.uark.edu

    O:R organizer: Mick (hvaishn@emory.edu)
