DANGIT!! I was so busy thinking of my five favorite postal workers to post
to the jam that I did something stupid and I posted a section of YJ #1061.
Geez, if it's not Blind Melon, it's another top five list...

Ah yes, Public Enemy, women, and religion.

I tell you, it doesn't get any better than this.

    ----------

    To WildKoba:

That's interesting, as I was about to post "Nation of Millions" by Public
Enemy as one of the most influential albums of all time. I suppose "Fear"
works too, though. Neat how someone else thinks PE is influential.

    ----------

To Anton Max: (Re: female musicians)

I don't know why this is, but I have never met a female guitar player that
could handle the instrument with intense dexterity. In fact, make that
guitars of any sort, electric or acoustic. Cellos, yes, many. Violins,
yes, many. But for some reason the in-between-sized neck of the guitar
just doesn't seem to be a favorite amongst women. I don't know why this
is, and I don't claim to, but it is what I have observed in the world of
    music and I'm baffled. Perhaps it's a she-thing.

Ladies help me out if you agree. It ain't nothin' but a she-thang. I can
bring home the bacon, fried inda pan, never lettin' you forget that you're
a man, fa la la la la....

Oh, sorry, just listening to the radio...

Back to my master theory, it could be that testosterone leads men to
prefer harder music, seeing as how we're more "savage" than women and all
that, so we would naturally be the ones to play electric guitars and more
Neanderthalic instruments, whereas women would gravitate towards graceful,
gentle orchestra strings. Yes, that theory makes so much sense, I think
I'll forward it to the guy who said Kevin Moore has testicular cancer. In
fact, I heard from a very reliable demigod that Myung receives his musical
inspiration by having Portnoy drum on his back with carrots.

    ----------

    To Randy Aquino:

I've thought about DT's use of Christian references, and I've thought
about how often bands quote any literary work. "The Silent Man" is (as was
recently discovered) an obvious work based on the literature of "Arabian
Nights," but I doubt that the song is about Petrucci's adventures with
Aladdin and Sinbad. What does this mean? Well, the Bible is FULL of
imagery and poetic verse that one could use in analogies or descriptive
writing. Many bands quote the Bible, but that doesn't necessarily mean
that the songs are about Christ.

As for band religion, I have a view Guesses, but no Statements Of Fact, as
I've never talked to any of them:

Judging by their lyrics and interviews, I would guess that Petrucci and
Myung prescribe to the more Eastern denominations of religion based on
enlightenment/oneness/harmony. I don't think any of the members are devout
Christians, or if they are they keep it to themselves. I don't suppose
anything about LaBrie, Sherinian, or Portnoy, but Moore struck me as
someone with a definite religious upbringing of some sort. Look at the
style of shrouded vengeance prevelant in Moore's lyrics as opposed to
Petrucci and Myung's raw neutrality. As for Dominici, who knows.

    ----------

Now for a strange question that occurred to me just this afternoon. Has
anyone else heard Madonna's new song, "You'll See?" The writing, musically
and lyrically, reminds me very much of Yngwie J. Malmsteen. I'm serious.
Anyone notice the overall lyrical feeling of "I will have my revenge, I
will crush you," (classic Malmsteen "revenge" lyrics) followed by minor
key changes and moody orchestration? Neverming that Madonna is actually
doing a song in a minor key, but this song really reminded me of Yngwie.

So call me crazy. I'll only say "Yes?"

    ***THANK-YOU MIKE BAHR***

I've been a DT fan since mid 1991. A friend who knew I was into
FW turned me on to them. I spent about a month looking for WDADU.
Upon finding it, DT shot up into my top 3 favorite bands, and has
remained since. Every time DT has played in Chicago, I've been
there. I was in the third row of screaming fans when DT recorded
the live footage for the Pull Me Under video.

Acoustic Dreams is stunning. It is obviously a labor of love.
The cover art is extremely professional (better than 99% of the
"real" CDs out there). The audio quality and mastering couldn't
be much better. Every track is incredible, but these are the ones
    that really made my year:

Lifting Shadows--I wouldn't have thought that this would lend
itself so well to an acoustic treatment. This is wonderful.
Wait for Sleep--a different slant on one of my favorite DT
melodies. I think this arrangement is better than the original.
This is so good, it absolutely needed to be heard.
Long Island Expressway--my perfect DT concert would consist of the
band trying a bunch of new ideas. Like Bombay Vindaloo, this
gives me some idea of how cool it would be. This is a great jam.
Perfect Strangers--Maybe it has something to do with Bruce being
there, but John P. gets a little sloppy and absolutely smokes
      on this version!
Six O'Clock--This is hot! I don't really miss the samples. :)

One small quibble...nobody would have minded if, instead of the
poor audience recordings, the acoustic To Live Forever had been
    added as a bonus track.

I would have paid twice as much for this. In fact, I'd love to give
a few of these as Christmas gifts. Mike...any left?

Hi 'jammers! I'd like to turn your attention to a great melodic progressive metal band from the German underground: Superior. You may know one of their guitarists, fellow 'jammer Bernd (basmer@med-rz.uni-sb.de). They just released their first CD "Behind" and now hope to get a record deal. And if I owned a record company, I'd sign them ASAP. ;) There are nice piano parts in the songs -they have two keyboardists- , the singer is able to sing high, low, different moods,..., there are a lot of rhythm changes, and last but not least, Bernd really can play. Cool acoustic parts... I'm sure a lot of you 'jammers would like the album. :) The Cd also features great artwork and has a clear sound. I hope to read more opinions on Superior on the list, maybe from the people who helped Bernd with the lyrics. If you're interested in the CD, email Bernd. You won't be disappointed!

With the latest issue of the German Metal Hammer magazine, I received a promo sampler CD from MCA records, "Proud To Be Loud". I was quite surprised to see that "A Fortune In Lies" is on it. It also features older songs from Alice Cooper, Meat Loaf, Scorpions, Gary Moore,... and is for promotion of the new "Proud To Be Loud" series of "classics and legends of rock music" including WDADU.

And if someone cares, my current playlist: Superior: Behind - Shadow Gallery: Carved In Stone The Gathering: Mandylion - Savatage: Dead Winter Dead - DT: ACoS

(Joe Kruger originally posted this *huge* list, and I had some artists added who did the following songs...)

    >Song Title Artist Name >---------------------------------------------------------------- >All or Nothing Ratt, Whitesnake

.don't forget the Milli Vanilli song by that name... (no, I don't have it!!! I've just heard it a while back...a long while...)

    >Changes Black Sabbath, Yes

    Tesla

    >Destiny Journey, MSG

    Petra

    >Friends Led Zeppelin, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani

    Michael W Smith

    >Inside John Norum, Van Halen

    Whiteheart

    >Lady Luck Journey, David Lee Roth

I think Tesla had one by that name (on TGRC album)...

    >Leave Me Alone Extreme, White Lion

not another group, but I think it's kinda funny that Extreme also has a song "DON'T Leave Me Alone" [emphasis mine] on their "Stop The World" import single...

    >Little Girl Loverboy, Journey

Extreme's got "Little Girls," but I guess that's not close enough...

    >Paradise MSG, Aldo Nova

Again, I think Tesla has a song by that name (on TGRC album... I haven't listened to that in a long time...)

    >Someday Valentine, Aldo Nova

    Michael Sweet (ex-Stryper)

    >Surrender Y & T, Sammy Hagar, Trixter

    Stryper

Well, these are my only additions to that huge list...

I agree with Damon: DT's WDADU has to grow on you. But for me, however, it has been the same experience for all of their albums, incl. SubCon. My first DT album was I&W, and at first I didn't really like it, but my brother did, so he always made me put it on when we were in the car. I grew to love it. Then, when Awake came out, I got it with high hopes. When I heard it, however, I was disappointed. Later, however, a transcription of Lie appeared in GFTPM. When I looked at the solo, I HAD to go back and take another listen to the album. I found it awesome. Similar story with WDADU and SubCon, except I was expecting to not like them as much as the beginning. Well, wake up, I'm done.

I think I like the AD version of Lifting Shadows more then the studio version. It seems to have a darker sound. Especially around the 1:00 mark. Oh yeah, and I have #141.

But Mike Bahr, one of my CD cases was cracked when I got it. Not a big deal, just wanted to tell you. It took forever to get all the dust off the CDs when I got it out of the package.

Just hit the 2:00 mark. Although the studio version is awesome, this version seems to capture the feel just as well as Im used to. I think Im going to listen to this version a lot more then awake.

Overall, AD was well worth the wait, and I guess I got what I paid for. Dont get me wrong. I love it, just a little different then I expected in that there isnt as much sound as Im used to. I suppose thats what Bootlegs are for : )

Thanks a lot. Did you have to put Majesty on the thing because of copyrights or something? Ill be listening to this for a while.

The only thing I dont like is the high acoustic guitar that starts Wait For Sleep. Too hard for even Petrucci to play cleanly. In a lower octave he would ace it, but not all the way up there. I love his use of harmonics in all the songs.

    Allright, later all.

Could somebody send me the post release from one of the jams about operation revolution. I am doing a speech on it for class and need it before Wednsday. Send the press release or whatever it is to: s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu, not to the jam. Thanks in advance. Remember, before Wednsday.

Well, Steve, I've tried mailing you a few times, but it keeps getting bounced back to me! Anyway, thanks a lot for the plug on the ytsejam! Don't worry, though -- even if I never find a bass or keyboard player, you'll still hear more from me -- that's for certain!! And as for why I moved to Boston -- to form a band!! School really wasn't the main thing that brought me here. There you have it! Thanks again!

    Hey guys!

A couple weeks ago, I asked if there was interest in a get-together of Ytsejammers in New London before the El 'n Gee show. I've made some calls and have an idea we should all discuss and try to finalize. Here goes.

Where: We could all meet at the Dutch Tavern. A recent post said this place was like a TGI Friday's--maybe slightly seedier, but that's okay. Its address is 23 Green Street, which is supposed to be shouting distance from the El 'n Gee. The phone number is (860) 442-3453.

When: 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27. Is this enough time to eat and chill before the show? I think so, but let me know.

What to bring: Money for food(obviously) and wear your Ytsejam T-shirts if you have them. If not, other DT shirts would be fine, but we'll need these to identify each other, so leave your Blind Melon shirts at home, okay?

To Mike Bahr (or anyone who can help): I know we talked about this before, but would it be possible to let the band or even just Mike Portnoy know that this is happening? It would be great to have them stop by.

Okay guys, RSVP to me, or preferably on the jam, so we can all see this thing come together. Any suggestions would be great, but let's get this finalized relatively soon, because once Christmas gets near, a lot of us college students won't have access to the net.
