I know of only two upcoming DT shows at the moment. One is in New
London, CT on Dec. 27th and the other is in Old Bridge, NJ on Dec. 29th.

Does anyone know if there are any more scheduled shows? I must admit
that I am posting this before reading some recent 'jams. If anyone has
word of some more shows or a complete schedule, that would be a great
thing to post. If something has been posted I apologize.

I live in North Carolina and I'm finally considering making the trek to
one (or both) of these shows. I really want to find out other dates
since I have never seen them live :( . Any news is greatly appreciated.

Yes, this is in a database. Sorry I didn't convert it to HTML
so that I could win Dork of the Net award.

Just be thankful that I haven't gotten around to entering all
    my old vinyl.

Yes, I admit that I have spent some money on bands that
    totally suck.

I really wish I was a musician so that I could list all the
cool stuff I'd have instead of demonstrating what a nerd I am.

I forget who started this thread, but I think it's a great idea! Hmm...
my picks as to the 5 most influential albums from the past ~20 years?
    I'd say:

    1) Van Halen/Van Halen: Eruption. 'Nuff said.
    2) Rush/Moving Pictures: The one that introduced almost everyone to
    Rush. Where would we be...
    3) Nirvana/Nevermind: Not that it was anything to write home about, but
it got guitar-based music back onto MTV (the barometer of all that
influences the general public), and said, "It's once again ok to just
    flat-out rock."
    4) The Who/Tommy: Probably the first well-known "concept album"
    5) Metallica/Master of Puppets: Yeah, the die-hard metal heads had all
been listening to Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, and Slayer before this
one came out, but the song "MoP" broke the whole thing wide open, and
somehow legitimized metal as an artform. Seems to me that speed metal is
the last art form we've seen that is truly American. (yeah, yeah, Lars
    is European. Bite me.)

I have been known to change my .sig with great frequency, but I think
this one is gonna stay for a while. Comments?

I'm listening to it right now for the second time and I can truly say that it
may be the best Dream Theater album available, bar none. Lifting Shadows Off
a Dream is so beautiful. Then the guitar and vocal on Wait for Sleep are too
much(better than the Tokyo video). But the best thing is the U2 cover at the
end of the CD. The sound quality is the worst on the album(the others are
all studio quality) but James's voice will knock you over even with the poor
    sound quality.
If you don't have it yet. You have to get a copy of Acoustic Dreams.
Thanks Mike Bahr. Its the best purchase I've made all year.

just gotta make a few comments:

1.) testicular cancer is not fatal by itself, i don't think - the problem
is when it metastasizes (spreads) to other parts of the body - that
is when you're up shit's creek.... anyway, I don't think that KM
has cancer at all...pretty crappy thing to post, if ya ask me

2.) At the end of the last track in "Chasing Time", I guess they threw in
an outtake of the studio rehearsal of "Monument" - Ray screws up
the lyrics and finishes it off by swearing a bit...pretty funny when
I hear it....but it IS profanity, so I say we all lynch him and hang
            him by his nuts eh?

which brings me to another point......lighten up people
this is not a flame at all (and even if it is, I really don't give a
shit), but making judgments about the language people use is really
ignorant (calling FW tasteless for putting that on the CD, or DT
disappointing for using fuck in one of the songs) and retarded....
if you don't like it, then don't listen to that particular thing...re-dub
it and censor it for yourselves....

i for one am sick of hearing it, and i'm sure im not the only one....

    there i vented....:P

hmm...i was gonna put something else down too, but i forgot...shit

anyway, if anyone is planning some kinda meeting before the NJ show, post it.
Maybe we can meet at the White Castle (yum, yum) on Rt. 9 before the show
or something......I got a ticket, but I'm being optimistic about going,
gotta wait and see how my leg and arm hold up in the next 2 mos.....

    Greetings,

I did something today I do not normally do. I paid $17.31 for a
cd I had never heard before. I surprisingly found Shadow Gallery-Carved
In Stone at one of the few record stores in town. I had heard so much
about them I couldn't resist (I also had a few extra $ then usual). So, I
bought it. It is good. I hesitate to compare them to DT, because to do
so might give some inaccurate perceptions. However, their sound is closer
to DT than any other band I've heard. I recommend the album, but take no
responsibility for those who don't like it. I have taken chances like
this before and gotten screwed. It's nice for it to work out sometimes.
Somebody recently asked about song titles that were used by
various bands. Well, THE MISSION, which was mentioined is also a song by
Kin'gs X. I also think Magellan uses that title. I know there are many
other examples, but I can't think of them now.
Someone also asked recently about the lack of women in
progressive music, both as fans and participants. Well, I have also
noticed that, to some degree. But there are a few exceptions. the band
Sky Cries Mary, which has a female vocalist, has been compared somewhat
to King Crimson. I haven't heard enough of them to criticize or
endorse. Also, there is an all female band called Velvet Hammer which is
often discussed on the King's X mailing list. They are supposedly in the
same vain as King's X, but with flute and keys (and obviously female
vocals). They have a home page, but I don't recall the addresss. I have
    also never heard them.
            Favorite vocalists (some)

    Jon Anderson
    James
    Adrian Belew
    Jon Wetton
    Layne Staley
    Ray Weston (echolyn)

these are in no particular order.

    Kyle

    Hello all:
Well, on the advice of many 'Jammers I went out to the Blockbuster
Music near me and abused the listening bar with a few CDs. I tried Saga's
_Generation 13_ (woah! a little too progressive for me...any Saga fans out
there that can recommend a better album to start with?...maybe a run-down of
all of their albums?), and Eric Johnson's _A-ve Music_ (?...something like
that...it had a famous song on there that I never knew he did [track 2]...can't
remember the name, though...wasn't in that type of mood to pick it up). I also
listened to Savatage's _Handfull of Rain_ and _Edge of Thorns_.
Well...not quite exactly what I expected. I was shocked by their
slower, more "musical" passages (you know, the kind of music that you would
play for your mom, and then when the hard part kicks in it would just knock her
on her...ahem...fanny [hey...can't say a** when referring to Mom!]). The only
problem I had with their music was Zach Steven's voice. (Hear me out on this,
please.) Don't get me wrong, on the slower parts his voice is soooo awesome,
esp on _EoT_ (on _HoR_ his voice had a little more of an edge to it, even on
the slower parts). But when the heavy parts set in, all I could think of was
Ronnie James Dio. He sounded almost just like him, only a few pitches higher
(not a whole octave, 'cuz the two bands mostly play in different keys). I was
more (right away) impressed with _Strange Highways_ by Dio, so I would
recommend that you 'Jammers check that one out, also 'cuz Best Buy has it for
$4.99 on cut-out. :) Now, I give much kudos to Savatage, but I think it will
have to grow on me a little more, so I am going to be going back often, at
least until I have money to splurge and by both _HoR_ and _EoT_. There is no
doubt in my mind that if I gives these guys more of a chance (see money issue
above) that they will MOST DEFINITELY grow on me. In fact, I kinda wished I
had bought one of them now.
Well, I needed to buy something, 'cuz ever since I sent off the money
to Mike Bahr for AD (back in August) I have been restraining myself. So, I
decided to FINALLY pick up _Parallels_ by Fates Warning. I borrowed it from
one of my friends a while back and was EXTREMELY impressed, so I knew that I
would be taking NO chances on buying this one. It is simply AWESOME!
Well, I will leave you all to your senses and invite those of you who
are more versed with the following bands to send me catalog critiques of them,
especially from those of you who have quite a few of their albums.
            Eric Johnson
            Yngwie Malmsteen
            Paradise Lost
            Saga
            Savatage
or any other bands whom you live by and want me to check out.

    'Til next time...

Thanx to all who answered the "who is Geoff Downes" question. But Asia
dodn't die after the debut. They went on to write exceptional prog. rock
songs, up until and including last year!!!
    Here's a list:

            ASIA
            ALPHA
            ASTRA
***LIVE IN MOSCOW*** (A MUST have!!!)
THEN AND NOW (Greatest hits through 1989)
AQUA -released in 1992, very dark, and non-pop sounding
ARIA - released in 1994, even better than AQUA, great key-work!

I definatly recommend all of these albums. They aren't as
complex and/heavy as DT (obviously), but the band desearves a second listen.
Especially (but NEVER limited to) keyboardists!

Hi Ryan, yes, funny, it definately caught my attention!!!

Hey kiddies. I've noticed that a lot of folks are talking about meeting
up before the Malibu show, but nobody has been specific. So, I'm going
to be specific. If anybody has a better idea, post it. For now, here's
    my plan:

There's a Roy Rogers about 1-1/2 miles west of the club. I chose this
place because there's no turns involved between it and the club, and it's
at a major intersection, which is a good landmark. Roy's is at the
corner of Park Blvd. (aka Lido Blvd.) and Long Beach Blvd. in Long
Beach. All you gotta do is leave the Malibu parking lot, turn left, and
watch for signs that say "Long Beach Rd., Rockville Centre" or
something. These signs immediately precede a huge intersection. Roy's
is on the far right corner, next to a movie theater. What say we all
meet there at 6:00 (Hey! That's a good name for a song! Think it's been
taken yet?). This'll give us time for meet'n'greet, chow, and getting to
the club to get our faces up to the stage for the "rilly big shew."
    Good? Bad?

Also, how many of you would be interested in an after-show party? I
might be able to reserve my firehouse, which is about 10 mi. from Malibu,
for the night. If not, we can all meet at a bar. My guitarist's friends
own a bar in Long Beach (I don't remember the name off hand). What do
    you guys think?

    -Chris

Those of you travelling great distances to get to Malibu...

The directions already posted say that you can take I-495, the Long
Island Expressway, to the Meadowbrook Pkwy. THIS IS WRONG! YOU WILL GET
LOST! You can take the LIE, but you must get off at the exit that says
"Northern State Pkwy. to Jones Beach" or something. The exit is in the
30's somewhere, I think. It's right after the Roslyn Rd. exit (if you're
going east. If you're going west on the LIE, then you probably already
know where you're going.) The exit is for NSP East only. Once you get
on the NSP, the MP exit is 2 exits away, exit 31A (not 31 as previously
    reported.)

    Hope that helps!

When I first got into DT, I bought all three studio albums at the same
time. I fell in love with Awake and IW, and listened to Ytsejam a lot, but
couldn't get into Charlie's voice. But I find that his voice grew on me, and
I can listen to WDADU with the same passion I have for everything else DT has
put out. So, give WDADU more of a chance, because Charlie's voice needs some
getting used to, but it might just grow on you.

OK, my turn (including favorite "guitar-oriented" tracks by each):

    1) John Petrucci - Erotomania
    2) Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover, of course!!
    3) Nuno Bettencourt - Pornograffiti (incredible solo!)
    4) Steve Morse - Highland Wedding (off his "solo" release
"High Tension Wires" - GREAT album!!)
    5) Joe Satriani - Since his stuff is pretty much all instrumental,
I can't think of any titles right off....<grin>

Other favorites include Steve Howe, Alex Lifeson, Vito Bratta (YES I
remember him - best guitar work was on White Lion's LEAST popular but BEST
album - "Mane Attraction" - check it out in your local "cut-out" bin!!),
Steve Vai ("For The Love Of God" on "Passion And Warfare" - WOW!), Rik
    Emmett, etc.

Fave non-DT bands (Lots of surprises here, I'm sure!!! <sarcastic grin>):

    1) Rush
    2) Yes
    3) Marillion
    4) Fates Warning
    5) Queensryche

Others...Boston, Extreme, Triumph, Zebra (What ever happened to them?),
Winger (check out their THIRD album - "Pull" - Great stuff, NOT the
bubble-gum rock of their first two), Elton John, Journey, Genesis.....

    Later!

    hi all,

first of all let me apologize to the person I flamed with drummers vs vocalists
thing, I dunno how I god so mad but I'm really sorry about that and spacially
after seeing another person ( I'm really bad with names) dealing with the same
topic in a real matured way.

any way, about no female proggs...well I think partially it's record co's are to
be blamed. They still think as women to be dancing bambies or some wierd ( Mtv?)or just another Tory Amos or their product won't sell. cirtainly with now that
the whole hard rock scene is kinda going underground now it's hard for bands
with guys to land deals ( if you know how to play your instrument and know that
"mode" is something from music theory ......Cya!) so there is not much encourage-ment for our female friends to do much is there??? but I may be wrong on this so any other ideas?? (speaking of female shredders ..any body heard Phantom Blue??? how are they?)

Somebody mentioned epics...does Ecoes by Pink Floyd count (from meddle) and how
about Shine on you crazy diamond(part i to ix ) ?? alsoo don't forget Rime of
the ancient mariner, 7th son of a 7th son ( Iron Maiden)

    enouth rambling for now ....
    have fun:)

hendrix- axis. 10000 times better than "experienced?"
tori amos- under the pink. see the dt comment.
renaissance- scheherazade/other stories. most unknown band. 1st rock band
to play carnegie hall. strengthens the bond between rock and classaical
    that is essentially prog rock.
frank zappa- you can't do that on stage vol. 2- along with its humor, the
    best guitar playing by zappa.
queen- night at the opera. never again will anything be produced like
    that.
    elp- brain salad surgery. brilliant

One time I was thinking about that. How come there are so few women in
talented bands? There are plenty in pop and alternative, but very few in
progressive rock or metal. Is it because women just aren't talented? Then
it occurred to me that at practically every classical concert I've been
to, 90% of the string section (and a good bit of the rest of the
orchestra) is female. Now, it's not like I've been to millions of
classical concerts, but this has always seemed to be the case. Anyone else
    notice anything similar?
