About Mike's drum fill in ACOS at 13:20 seconds. The reason it is repeated
is because it is more or less not a fill. It is a variation in the rythm he
is keeping. To describe it is more difficult, despite the fact that it is
quite an easy fill to play. Let me try anyway:
                        3 4
                        1 1111 24 4

The number on the top indicate the beat of the measure. The number below
each represent a different sound. 1 is the bell of a ride cymbal, 2 is a
snare and three are two crash type cymbals. On the count of three Mike
begins the fill with by hitting the bell of the ride once and hitting the
bass drum with it. Now you must count the entire beat of three in sixteenth
note triplets(1-tri-plet-and-trip-let) so there are six spaces for sound.
The first stroke is the 1 and the Mike hits nothing for the next (the tri.
He then hits the ride's bell alone four more time to fill up the four
remaining spaces(let-and-tri-plet). The count of four must also be divided
up into 6 sixteenth note triplet spaces. On the first one(the 1) Mike hits
the snare. On the second Mike hits a crash cymbal(the tri) and he then
rests for a sapce(the let) and hits the crash one more time on the and of
the beat. There is nothing else until the crash on one of the next measure.
So if you put it all together you get something like this:

                        1- -let-and-tri-plet 1-tri- -and- -- -1

This probably didn't make much sense to most of you, but it is hard to
transcribe a drum part like this. It is much easier if you have note
notation or if you are in person. I hope someone finds this interesting.

just trying to prove that e-mail can be faked. I could have changed the

Ken Bibb's post was quite interesting - I agree...

Something else to remember about gender... It is merely a carrier
variable and does not cause anything... Causality can 'never' be derived
from a carrier variable. In other words, while sex differences clearly
exist, they only correlate with various results. Other carrier variables
include race, socio-economic status, etc...

How's that for no DT content? At least it's more interesting than
anything having to do with Blind Melon, eh?

        Now on to other issues. Mailing errors! I respond to EVERY piece
of e-mail I get, no matter who sends it, no matter how large or small,
unless it's something trivial like "thanks, talk to ya later" or somesuch
thing. If you're mailing me and not ever getting a response, PLEASE check
your server and/or mailer. I may be replying to everything and it may
never be getting to you intact. Only the net.gremlins know for sure... I
secretly suspect they play all sorts of gamesBIG DOGZ! BIG DOGZ! BIG
DOGZ, LANDING ON MY FACEwith messages in transit that may completely alter
the content.

        Mike Portnoy dosen't own a computer, know how to use one, or have
a net account. I suppose there's no harm in fake messages so long as
they're done in good taste, but they really shouldn't be posted. (If it
really was Mike, he'd probably have answered 'yes' when I asked him if he
reads the net posts) So it was a funny joke, cool for now, but I think
it'd be best if we all laid off of it for a while, lest this become like
the Star Trek area (anyone hear what happened when the REAL William
Shatner logged on, only to find no less than a dozen impostors insisting
that he himself was a fake?)

        Cheers, Mike! I know someone will print these issues of the Jam
out for you eventually, so I just want to say publicly that it was way
cool of you to give me a call, and I hope to catch up to you soon either
at a drum clinic or a winter concert. DT has real class.

        Acoustic Dreams packaging... someone requested an update on
numbers sent, well this is approximate, since I package 60-80 at a
sitting and then filter them out as fast as possible over the postal
system. So I'll just tell you where I am with the packing, and let you
draw your own conclusions. I've packed up all through nnumber 280. I've
only got around 40 packets sitting here unmailed as yet, but I might have
grabbed #210-224 or #266-280 when I did my mailings today.. I'm just not
sure, since I don't write the numbers on the envelopes due to it being a
multi-person effort to package and mail these things. So it's probably
safe to assume all up to 200 have been mailed by now, and should be at
their owners' homes soon.

        Finally, I'd like to express a note of thanks. Lately I've had
time to reflect on a few things with some changes in the family and some
employment problems for my friends, and I realized that I might have been
taking all you Jammers for granted. I just want to let you know that is
not going to be the case, and I appreciate Each and Every order, and each
and every note or mail or idea or whatever it may be. I have
sort of a cavalier, uncaring tone at times in my replies (such as "ok,
got it" or "ok, no problem") and I realize people might think I was a
victim of inflated-head syndrome. I have never been too good at being
verbose, so I hope this all comes across with my intended meaning.

        As When Dream and Today Unite approaches (Brian, you ever gonna
send the cover? heheh) and Antiquities looms on the horizon, I felt this
was the appropriate time to mention these things. Thanks for your support.

Hi Jammers,

I'm pleased to see the jam seems to be getting back to normal at
last, but what saddens me is that there have been a fair number of
postings with the nature of "due to the content of posts recently I
am reluctantly unsubscribing from the jam etc.".

Come on guys, do we relly need to drive members away? We should have
been proud that the list was going so well, I've never seen so many
mis-posted messages saying "please subscribe me" (i.e. people trying
to subscribe and mis-reading the instructions) for a long time.

As for the posts by JP and MP, real or not, I agree 100% with their
comments, and would be surprised if anyone said otherwise.

Remember the adverts in the music press for the Dream Theater
records? They contained one simple statement which we should all
remember:

      IT'S ABOUT MUSIC.

To whoever it was who wanted to know about the two fills Mike does
between the snare, kick, ride and chinas:

The particuler fill is in 4/4 time, making it thankfully fairly easy to
work out. Of course, I could have misinterpreted which fill that you
were talking about in which case ignore all of this!

Anyway, it starts with the bell of the ride cymbal playing 2 crotchets
and 1 pair of quavers all in the time of a set of 3 crotchet triplets.
The snare is on beat three of the bar, and then the kick and china
follows, with the first on being directly after beat three and the
second being directly on beat four. The first time the whole fill is
played, Mike uses the 22" china and the second time he plays it he uses
the 12" mini china (or is it the other way around?)

Confused yet? I hope not. If I've got this wrong, and anyone wishes to
correct me, please feel free.

I have been in a debate with my friend Mike for days about why Dream
Theater is ten-fold better than nine inch nails. Somebody help me out.
I have only this to say to nin; learn to play your instruments if you want
to call yourself musicians. Here is his argument:

Why do I prefer nine inch nails over DT? Number one, their honesty.
We live in a society peopled by a Generation X, which lacks a moral
compass, a direction or any real feeling.

Why?

The sixties gave rise to a philosophy of moral relativism, a philosophy
that "whatever feels right, is right." The adults of today were brought
up under that philosophy, and grew up lacking any real sense of values.
They imparted this moral vacuum on Generation X, at the same time
coddling them, refusing to judge or condemn their actions. Thus the
problems of widespread violence and illegitimacy.

Generation X lacks any real feeling. They've seen extremes of sex and
violence in the media culture, but rarely anything like true emotion.
Because of this, they are "Hollow Ones," dead inside emotionally. Numb.

nin addresses this in the song, "Hurt."

        "I hurt myself today, to see if I still feel. I focus on the
pain, the only thing that's real."

        nin's music is abrasive and shocking, matching these lyrics.
They compare Generation X to sheep and pigs, demonstrating that they
only have base motivations, like the need for food and sex.

        And what of Dream Theater? DT portrays REAL emotion. REAL
feeling. Their music is melodious and elicits an emotional reaction.
But it isn't honest. It portrays a world that except for very minor
conflicts (the loss of love, the loss of artistic integrity) is pretty
ideal.

        It is not our world.

        Most Gen X'ers can't identify with that kind of world. The
melodies leave them cold. Perhaps DT can't bring itself to face reality
or maybe they're trying to transcend it, but their music is in the final
analysis a lie, a cheat.

        In ACOS, a lyric states "even though I'm gone, I will live
on." Wrong! Dead is dead. Just ask the lead singer of Blind Melon.
Honor thy father and honor thy mother are outdated notions. The son of
the fictional protagonist of the song will probably not even shed a tear
for his father. Or if he does, there won't be anything but a vacuum of
societal expectation that predicates it.

        "Seasons change, and so can I," DT sings.

        But you can't change. You can't transcend.

        "I am the truth from which you run, and I control you," nin sings.
It means you can try to change, but you're just making a temporary
escape from your own nature. A nature that you hold as a consequence of
the how you were brought up.

        "He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see," --- nin.

        "We can hope for the future...," --- DT

        "Life was filled with wonder....," --- DT

        "My whole existence was flawed," --- DT

        Do you see the difference? One lives in Utopia, one lives in
the shitty world we've inherited. It's more honest. It's
uncomfortable. A nin song will never make you happy, but a DT song
might. But DT's happiness isn't honest, it's a lie built to escape misery.

        All this is not to say life is hopeless or full of despair. It's
just to argue that nin's music is a reflection of reality and DT's music
is an escape from it. Depending on your tastes, both approaches have merit.

        One last point. nin's infleuence is powerful. We've seen it in
other groups like Filter, Alice In Chains and even Pearl Jam. The
message is so strong, that even DT is being affected. Read part 5 of
ACOS and you'll see what I mean. Regardless of musical talent, you have
to admit, that of the two groups, nin has the more powerful message.

        If anyone would care to engage in a mass debate (no pun intended)
on specific points, please do. My criticisms of DT are purely
scholarly, not personal, so I hope we can have intelligent discourse,
rather than a cussing match. But judging by most of your posts,
("You dude, DT rulzzz!) I'm pretty pessimistic....

        Can't wait to hear from you.

Hi all,
It seems my contribution to the Jam 1078 didn't upset anybody, so I'll see
what I can do today.

First off, a question. Can anybody tell me anything about the Canadian band
Moist? I know they come from Canada, that they have a self-titled album out
(a really good album too), and that they spent a lot of time on the road. I
would be grateful for any more info, especially plans for a new album, tours
(in Europe) etc.
I actually first heard/saw Moist because of DT: back in February, good old
Headbangers Ball did a DT special, and the video for Moist's single 'Silver'
was played in the show - the next day the CD had taken it's place in my
collection.

Now for something that occurred to me last night while I was vacuuming my
flat. There has been a lot of stuff in the Jam recently along the lines of
"...if musicians are into drugs, I wouldn't like them or their music any more.."
I wonder how many of the people who feel like this have heard the track
'Puppies on Acid' that is available on some DT boots? Don't get me wrong,
I am in no way insinuating/suggesting that any member of DT has ever had
anything to do with illegal drugs - I was just wondering if the people who feel
this way about musicians/drugs skip songs whose titles and lyrics are clearly
about drugs (e.g. Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds by the Beatles, Mother's Little
Helpers by the Rolling Stones, Freakers Ball by Dr. Hook, Cocaine by J.J. Cale,
Good Friends and a Bottle of Pills by Pantera, etc...). This is just a little
thought that managed to push it's head out of the black lagoon of my mind, so
if you want to comment, feel free but don't do this to me:

Hello everyone, it's BABS. I have a big favor to ask of all of you so
here goes:

Does anyone have a list address for cars? The reason why I ask is that
someone recently approached me who works for Xerox in Rochester, NY. A
while back (we're talking a few years here) they ran an ad that showed
a Ferrari and a copier. The jist of the ad was to demonstrate which one
came with a better warranty, etc. Anyways, this person needs to locate
a Ferrari to be used for a display at a show. Thus I am trying to locate
a Ferrari that someone would be willing to "loan" for the display. There
is a way to arrange financial compensation for this endeavor. So I would
greatly appreciate any help that you all can give me.

Hey everybody,

I'm jumping out of "lurk mode" for the first time in quite a while.
Just wanted to get your opinions about my one and ONLY beef with ACoS (the
song). I love the drum sounds, by the way... man, that snare rules! I'm
surprised so many people don't like it - it actually sounds like a REAL SNARE,
what a concept! You can actually hear all the little subtleties & dynamics,
which is wonderful. I'm glad David Prater learned his lesson after the
production horrors he created (drum-wise) on I&W.
Anyway, what I really wanted to talk about was the little instrumental part
in the middle of The Crimson Sunset, right between the part when James
finishes singing "life goes on the offbeaten track" and the part when the
mood changes and the song builds to its climax. It's this little 4-measure
tangent which I think is SO cool, but they don't develop it at all, they
just go right into the ending part. Know what I'm talking about? I can
think of so many cool ways they might've continued on that theme, if only
for 4 more measures or something... to me, the transition would be much
smoother. Of course, they undoubtedly realize that and did it on purpose.
But if *I* was their producer, I'd have suggested they extend that part a
little more to make it flow better, and simply because I LOVE that riff!
It sounds like an edit to me. :) Yeah, the ACoS radio version... they
chopped out 10 seconds of a 23 minute song. :) Comments?
Aside from that teeny tiny little complaint, I think the song is a
freakin' MASTERPIECE. It just gets better and better with every listen.
One more thought: does anyone care to speculate on whether they'll be
performing ACoS at any of the three shows in December? Man, that would
be cool beyond cool. I'll be at the Birch Hill show... hope we can
organize a little get-together beforehand. That's all for now!

Hello ytsejammers,
I just ordered a Live in Tokyo video from a store in Colorado Springs
(thanks again Greg). They say it was recorded 1/25/95 so it must be
of the Awake tour. I have two questions: Is this a recording of the
PPV show? If yes, then is this a bootleg? The guy I talked to said
there is no writing on it other than some Japanese letters. This was
the last of two copies of this one. But they said they have some
Italian videos of DT. I don't know what they are. Also, they have a 2
cd set of a live concert done in Italy. I have the LiT video (I&W)
and my favorites off of that are TLF (killer solo) and TTT especially
where at the end John does some of his best work IMO. Every time now
I hear TTT from the CD it irritates me that they didn't let him
finish the song and fade him out right when it gets good. AARRRGH! Of
course, that's production/management decisions. Anyway, if someone
out there could help me out with my questions I'd much appreciate it.
 On another note, I think the 'jam will begin to improve as we all
have vented our 'dark sides'.

Well,

    I bet we can probably find eveidence of every mode through DT's music,
but I don't have the time to learn every song. What I CAN tell you is that
there is a LOT of Aolian, and much Myxolydian. I have noticed some Dorian as
well. For any non Musicians out there, those are modes, named after the
seven Greek tribes (tribes? Maybe islands. I dunno). Remember, though...
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS JUST A REGULAR SCALE! If you are talking about
Minor and Major, you are in other words talking about Ionian (Major) and
Aolian (Minor). John Petrucci uses a great deal of altered scales.... flat
fives (Flatten the fifth degree of the scale) and a lot of arpeggios. Tons
of 'em. One of his great skills is in using chromatics. That is what makes
his scales sound different than ours. They help to blend the scale into and
out of different keys (among MANY MANY OTHER USES!) Glad to be of some help.
