Hey, no angriness here, but -

It is very easy to change your name as well as your e-mail address when
sending mail. All one has to do (if using pine), is edit the .pinerc file
in one's home directory. It allows you to suppress the UNIX username you
have and your domain name. You can change these to anything you want with
a simple text editor. Allow me to demonstrate...

I noticed this in my CD player, especially right at the start of Innocence
Faded, where the solo guitar plays over the power chords. (If that was that
was incorrect then please excuse me - I'm a (YTSE)drummer) I even tried it
in a friends player and it was the same. Mind you, I haven't noticed it
anywhere else in the CD and you get use to it after a while.

Anyway... I think Tim definitely has a point. Has anyone else noticed?

Another thing, EVERY DAY I LOG ON WITH AT LEAST SIX DIGESTS. COULD WHOEVER IS IN CHARGE OF THE LIST PLEASE SLOW THEM THE FUCK DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHO THE HELL HAS TIME TO READ THROUGH THEM ALL???!! I HOPE THE PEOPLE ON THIS LIST HAVE LIVES OUTSIDE OF DREAM THEATER. I SURE DO. IF ANYONE AGREES WITH ME, WOULD YOU KINDLY POST A SIMILAR MESSAGE. MAYBE THEN SOMETHING WILL CHANGE. YOU TRY TO GET OUT SO MANY, I WOULD ASSUME IN AN ATTEMPT TO THUROUGHLY INFORM US, BUT WHAT ENDS UP HAPPENING(IN MY CASE) IS THAT I END UP DELETING THEM AND I AM THEN LESS INFORMED AS A RESULT. IT BACKFIRES!!! SO WOULD YOU KINDLY SLOW THEM DOWN(TWO A DAY AT THE MOST) SO THAT WE CAN ALL BE THUROUGHLY INFORMED WITHOUT MISSING A beat. Thanks.

Someone raised the question of why there aren't more women in prog-rock/metal. Well, I can't answer that, BUT I've heard of an all-woman band that kight be just what you're looking for. They're called Phantom Blue and their influences include Rush and Iron Maiden. Now, I've haven't heard what they sound like, though. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how they sound? Maybe I should go to Blockbuster and take a listen.

Awake. I was going to buy I&W when it first came out, but when HBB on eMpTyV had Lon Friend of Friend at Large ("later, duuuude") say that it was great, I didn't buy it. He had a much different taste in music than I did. He seemed to like anyone. Then, after hearing Lie on the radio, I thought "This is pretty good." I forgot about buying it for another few weeks. At that time, I went to The Record Store in Howell, NJ -- I recommend it if you live near there (They're the only store around me with CD's at decent prices and that carry some imports). They didn't have an album I wanted, but in the new CD rack was Awake. The rest is history.

The concept for this "fan club" is cool, but it really isn't all that I had expected. In the first few days of the "jam" I answered the equipment and best non-DT threads and at first thought it was cool. Maybe it is, but it is not Dream Theater. I get 4-5 messages per day about BS and three weeks later the novelty has worn off. I really think this should be kept to Dream Theater: material, information, questions and paraphernalia. Cut out the band bashing and soap opera and stick to the basics. I don't really see the need to pay some other dude $10 per month, week or year to filter out all of the garbage that I've seen. The YTSEJAM has been good for me. I had a burning desire to find out the significance of Cassandra and thanks to several well educated members of this club; now I know. CD and Demo material is now available to me that I did not even know existed; THAT'S FANTASTIC! This is why I enrolled... If others feel the same, good. Discipline ourselves to take the crap OFF LINE. Make E-Mail distribution subset lists if you wish to bash bands and such... Don't you find it a little embarrassing that someone might go to the lengths of posing as one of the guys from DREAM THEATER just to stop this childish bantering??? My option of course is to un-subscribe, but I hope it doesn't have to come to that. I believe there is constructive uses for the YTSEJAM club. Andy

Not that I'm getting lots of it, but, I'm sick of seeing people spending an entire post bitching about the lack of DT content. ..something ironic about that, isn't there?

ANYWAY, I'm now working P/T at a record store. This particular store has an "Employee Picks" section - where we all get to put 4 titles that we think are particurally good.

I think it goes without saying that Awake & ACoS are both in mine.

(The others are Extreme's "Waiting for the Punchline" and Scatterbrain's "Mundus Intellectuous.")

I'm carrying on the good fight where it really helps - at the cash register. =)

the most probable reason is because ALKEYHALL (aka alcohol) is being served. i say most probable because i've never been to that particular club. most US State laws require patrons must be at least 18 where alcohol is being served 21 to consume.

yeah, this sux for you younger 'Jammers but that's life. those of us who are 21 and older (YIPPIE! YEHAW! *glug* *glug* *dance of maturity* ;) went throught the same thing. ie. getting rejected from clubs.

it's also a little lesson. 21 and older -> drink; drink -> money; money -> clubs. clubs -> bands. bands -> life is good!

no drink(21 or otherwise) -> no money. no money -> no clubs. no clubs -> no bands. no bands -> life sux!

ok, so this is a bit simplified and unrealistic (no clubs == no bands) but i think you get the point.

Antti, Sorry about the sharp sarcasm. It's a bad habit of mine. On with the fill

When I read your first post I was pretty sure I knew which fill you were talking about, but I had never heard it repeated in TIS (new abbreviation! The Inevitable Summer). I'll have to listen to that again. Actually, the first eight bars from Another World, which include your fill are repeated (minus the guitar/toms unison thingy) after "I won't let them push me AWAYYYY!!!!". Since you have stated that you're not to handy with musical theory, I've been trying to think of a good way to explain it so that it doesn't sound like foriegn language. I'll explain a bit about the rhythms so you can (hopefully) understand it better. Okay. (I hope) You can count 1-2-3-4 1-2-3-4 along with the song, right?

So you don't accidentally go double time:

    1 2 3 4 kick snare kick snare

Those (1-2-3-4) are quarter notes. What MP is doing during the fill are 16th note triplets. Below are regular sixteenth notes:

1 2 3 4 1-e-an-a 2-e-an-a 3-e-an-a 4-e-an-a A sixteenth note triplet makes it so that three beats go to every two sixteenth notes, as such:

    1 - e - an - a 2 - e - an - a 1-e-a an-e-a 2-e-a an-e-a

If that doesn't help: the guitar riff in Metropolis under "the smile of dawn arrived early may" is based on 16th note triplets.

In the fill, MP is doing 16th note triplets on the kick drums from beat one to beat two: 1 - e - a an - e - a

Above that is a rhythm on the bell of a cymbal, so with the kicks, the first part goes like this:

    Cymbal: 1 a e - a Kick drum: 1 - e - a an - e - a

Then after that he hits the snare and then two crash cymbal/kick drum hits, in a rhythm that is easy to hear and hard to explain. The same thing is repeated at the second time, and I'll listen to TIS again, and see if I can hear it there.

Hope I Helped! Ben Laussade laussade@enet.net

I understand your frustrations, but it isn't Dream Theater or their management's fault that certain age restrictions are placed on their concerts. DT seems to have a great relationship with their fans (thanks, Mike!), and I'm sure if they had their way, everyone would be able to see their live show. But if a club has an "18 & over only" policy, there's nothing a band can do about it. Unfortunately, there are a lot of clubs with these policies, but if DT were to avoid all such clubs, they would be very limited in the areas of the country where they could play and they would never get the national exposure that they deserve.

So you shouldn't take it out on their management, and NO ONE should try to make some profound statement by boycotting Dream Theater to protest something that the band has no control over! That's just silly!

(Luckily I'm 21 now so I will never have to deal with this problem again, but I do remember those days well...and they're not always fond memories!)

I don't know about the rest of you all, but I get a kick out of his alphabet. Apparently his alphabetical order is slightly different than mine. M before S before P before L before P again. Let's see, not only bad order, but two P's. If you did this on purpose, I like it! If you however didn't, pleae go back to Kindergarten!!

Hello, all! Ah, so much excitement in Ytsejamland. :P I have a favor to ask of anyone who is attending an upcoming DT show. If they're available, I'd like to have a sticker for my car (as Zach cleverly phrased it, my previous one spent too much of its life in the sun!) If you would like to help me out, please contact me privately. Many thanks! :)

Also a new trivia question: In general terms, what is the graphic material used for the background on the title side of the CD and the inside of the cover insert of DT's 'Lie' European import single?

For those of you that have it, and aren't acquainted with atomic physics, IMO, the background is of a photograph of subatomic particle trails in a hydrogen bubble chamber or a similar device.

    WARNING: Semi-long post to follow:

Thought you all might be interested in a little exchange I had with a CD store owner the other day:

On Tuesday, I went to the store to buy Savatage's new CD "Dead Winter Dead". At the same time, I figured I'd finally pick up Fates' "Chasing Time" since I have been a bad little fan and had neglected to get it when it first came out. I went up to the counter to pay, and the guy picks up the Savatage CD and says:

"This just came out today, you know."

    "I know," I replied. "That's why I'm here!"

"You mean you were waiting for this?" he scoffed.

"Yes I was," I admitted proudly.

He then picked up the Fates Warning CD and said "Fates Warning, too??!! On the same day??!!"

Again I answered yes, and he rolled his eyes and said "Hmmph. And I suppose Dream Theater is another favorite, right?"

"Hell, yes!" I replied. "What's wrong with that?"

He said: "Oh, nothing, I suppose. I used to be into all that 'heavy metal' stuff too--you know, Megadeth and Testament and stuff--but I finally outgrew that stage."

"This isn't like Megadeth, though," I responded. "It's progressive--it's intelligent and well-thought out, and the musicianship is unsurpassed!"

"Progressive rock is terrible!" he replied. "They all sound the same with those long solos with too many effects, and the singers all have those annoying whiny voices!"

At this point, I was prepared to launch into a huge debate about the quality of progressive music and the ignorance of those who can't even appreciate the value of the bands' talent, regardless of whether or not the person likes to LISTEN to the music. But the seven people in line behind me were beginning to shuffle their feet with impatience so I decided it was time to leave peacefully.

I'll just have to go back to see him this Tuesday (Halloween) when I go to pick up the new Helloween CD!! (This, of course, will have to be after I e-mail my personal note to MTV! ;) !!)

Sorry about the length, but I had to vent!

Jodi (Yet another FEMALE progressive rock fan!)

Here's my short review of Acoustic Dream (#43)

ANOTHER DAY: the vocals are...weird. This version is very depressive, and the acoustic solo of JP is cool. LSOAD: this song was my least favorite on Awake, but this version... Myung... my favorite on AD. WAIT FOR SLEEP: i couldn't resist to pick up my acoustic guitar and try to figure it out (i also tried to sing it but everybody told me to shut up 8( ) SILENT MAN: as good as the original... L.I.E.: i wasn't expecting this jam at all, but after a couple of listen, i like it a lot. TEARS: LaBrie!LaBrie!LaBrie... the guitar is very simple but James makes this one very special (for me) O HOLY NIGHT: a traditional song that my girlfriend sing along with James BUT in french PERFECT STRANGERS: a like ACOS version more (never was Iron Maiden fan) 6:00 Kevin Moore solo is diffirent than the original and the sample are not there (and i don't miss them) and James vocals are much more aggresive grrrrr CiaW: as good as the originals VOICES: too short, i need something longer! (K.Moore LiT reference on this one) BAD: a great U2 song very well played, i'm going to use this song for my non initiated DT friend...

Thank you Mike Bahr, your CV is going to be impressive, maybe bands will run to you for being their producer or something like that 8*)

    Regarding Trey Allen's recent post:

I have a few of the ACOS promo mini posters. They're 12x12 posterboard and have the CD cover on the front and the old guy on the back with promotional info. If anyone's interested I have some extras and would be willing to trade for other DT-related items. Also, I read some possible meeting places a while back for the Dec. 27 El 'n Gee show. Any final plans? Let's try to make some soon. Well, I better go resume my position outside our post office. My Acoustic Dreams #305 might get here. I can't wait any longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The anticipation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
