Hey, Jammers. It's time to hate me. I have an advance copy of ACOS. A
friend of mine LOANED it to me, but I have to give it back. And since we both
work at the radio station at my university, we got a promo copy. I'm going to
play something off of it for my show. Not ACOS itself, my boss would have a
fit, but one of the cover tunes. Now for some questions and favors.

    1. Can somebody tell me if Kevin is playing keys on ACOs the song? I am not
sure. Sounds like him to me.
    2. I have a bootleg I want to trade. It's called Consciously Unreal. It is a
double disc boot containing two shows, one from the IW tour and the other
from the WDADU tour. Thinking of getting a boot from Awake for it if
possible. If you want to trade, email me at the address below.
    3. Can somebody possibly make a cassette copy of Subconscious for me, and I
will send you the money for the tape. I don't know much about this CD, so if
anyone can send me information on it, or if you want to copy it for me, get
    in touch.
Next, can somebody please give me some more information on what else I need
CD wise for DT. I have WDADU, IW, Awake, will have ACOS soon, and I also have
a great sounding bootleg from the IW tour from Milan. But I want more. More,
damn it. So, if anyone wants to get in touch with me to talk about DT, my
email addre is s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. This is my first post, and I
love this list as much as I love the Rush list.
By the way, if anyone can give me some ideas of other progressive rock bands
to get into, I'd apreciate it. Currently, I listen to Rush, DT, Yes, Styx,
Kansas, ELP, you get the idea. So, let's talk progressive.

By the way, did anyone else mourn when Kevin left the band? Does anyone know
where I can get solo stuff from him. I think he's one of the best keysmen in
the 90s, and I am a keyboard player. It was Kevin who convinced me not to
sell my synth when grunge became big. Thanks, Kevin. You're an inspiration.
Now go back to DT and kick ass like you did before.

After many months of indoctrination, my friend's
girlfriend told me the other night to make her a
Dream Theater tape. I think the reason it took
her so long to admit this is because her boyfriend
always capped on Pearl Jam, rather harshly, when
he knew they were one of her favorite bands. I
usually kept my mouth shut !>)>

I have a 94 min. tape whose setlist might include
(she likes heavy music, as she often likened James
    to a 'glam' vocalist):

PMU CIAW instr. jam (from _Mind Control_)
    TTT (demo version) Erotomania/Voices
Surrounded Puppies on Acid (from LOS)/The Mirror
Metropolis SDV (who couldn't love this song?)
    UAGM Eve (from DoE)
    WFS/LTL AFIL (from LATM)
    Eve (studio) [or] OAMOT
    AH/TKH

Whoa! That's probably a lot more than 94 mins.
I might drop PMU and UAGM... I'd like to include
a few of the Instrumental demos, maybye I'll
make 2 tapes... Or, I'll make another after the
ACOS EP comes out. I hope they're still together
when the next tour comes around.

_Then_ I, I mean *we* (am I giving something away
here?), will look forward to completing her training...
    heh, heh, heh.

    Hi everybody!

This is a message to all Swedish DT fans, the release date for ACOS is 15
Sept. I just talked to my favorite record store and got the official
    date... just 4 more days.

Favorit DT moments: the middle part of TTT, these solos are SOOOO well
aranged and the part that realy kills me is the rythem guitar (!?) behind
    Kevins solo at 5:19.
TTT was the first DT song I ever heard and it still moves me.
The solo on UAGM, I know that John said that "it was only a bag of tricks"
but my god how well done. And while we are talking 'bout solos, Johns solo
after TLF from LIT show some blues influenses for the first time and they
did also pop up in the intro of Scarred.
The brutal power of 6:00 when I heard it for the first time, WOW!
and of course the groove (also a first for DT, IMHO altough the first verse
of TTT also have a cool grove) of LIE always catches my attension.
And the greatest: Their wonderful consert in Malmoe, Sweden this spring,
James realy sounded great live, how many times have You heard great singers
on records only to get disappointed live, James rules...

And the worst: well, I just can't get into WDADU... it must be Domenics
voice or the lousy sound quality or their not-yet-finished arrangements
    skills or....
Ok, there are some bits and pieces here and there but when I'm listening to
it I just feel like swap the disk as quick as possible for Awake or I&W...

Sorry for the length, I got carried away...

    Cheers,

Hello fellow jammers (sorry to clutter the digest...)

Well, the subject says it all! It's not that we don't have a drummer,
but we must give him the boot if we are to ever "progress". I'm asking
for your help. If you know of any places (internet mailing lists or
music stores in your town) to post this ad, please post it. In case you
are wondering, our current drummer has health, family, and drug
problems. He is really hindering our "progress". I hope you can help us
spread the word... Thanks...... If you are a double bass drummer or
know of a good one, please get in touch with us...

well, I guess that shows how different DT fans are. I first heard Afterlife
on the InstruMental CD, long before I got WDADU, and loved it. Then I heard
it with vocals and at first I was awe-struck, but when I started to listen to
the words I thought that they were really bad, and IMHO take the edge off the
song - the first verse, for me, is particularly bad... [Dominici's only
lyrical attempts, I think]. Conversly I think the chorus is the best on the
    album.

Each to their own, I guess.

    Hi!

I was wondering myself these days when I played back my old Metallica tapes. I think it's a matter of comparison base: opposed to today's grunge and punk and all that crap pretending to be heavy metal (y'know, things like Panthera or Offspring), Metallica sounds very sophisticated. I seriously think things like "Orion" or "And Justice for All" (the song) or "To Live Is to Die" ARE progressive, but the overall bias of the band ain't. Same with Megadeth: they're doing pretty nice things from time to time, but... I will never put them on the same shelf with DT and Mekong Delta and Yes and all the rest "real" progressive bands. (btw anybody heard Martie Friedmann's "Scenes"? This is some major good work). What d'you think?

The MIND CONTROL boot is the same as WAKE UP (Japan 95) except for one thing: MC also includes two songs from the Holland unplugged session (The Silent Man and Tears, I think).

Some friends moved me to DT and (yes, I know it's awfull) I listen first IAW, then A and at last WDADU. Well boys, the warm, the perfection, the feeling in James' voice catch me totally. So then when I heard WDADU, I can't even believe that they're DT. Yes, the atmopheare of the music is the same, even if it's at beginning, the strenght is present but, my God, Charlie wasn't the right singer for them. He's a good singer, in fact I like very much Only a Matter of Time where his voice is used in the right way. Instead the version of Fortune in Lies sings by James LaBrie and that sings by Charlie Dominici are different as day and night. LaBrie is able to make music alive while Charlie sings in a monotonous way: no high, no bass.

At last a little question: there're anybody of you that are afraid of Kevin Moore's left ? The lyrics and the music are written by Petrucci, Portnoy and Moore. With his left the type of the sound may change. I watched and listened the new keyboard player at concert in Milan and I don't like very much his choose of keyboard sounds: the solo of Take The Time (the greatest songs of DT) is totally changed ! I hope that somebody could tell me where I can find some keyboard stuff about DT, here in Italy it's impossible to find something except of guitar.

I don't know. I think it's a toss up. Ride the Lightning is great but Master of Puppets is... well... more defined (?). I know a lot of people who really like Kill 'Em All, but I don't like that album. Ride the Lightning I think is where they start to get their sound and Master is where it really comes out. Then something happened. And Justice was cool but I still liked Master. Guess I can't explain it.

    Good Morning, everyone.

I just got a promo copy of ACoS yesterday <thanks to Jason Hartman> and I feel I must share with everyone my take on the CD.

The new version of ACoS simply RIPS. It's really great. The new intro <with the acousic guitar> is great, and the way it kicks in is also good. I miss the old intro. That one just kind of slaps you in the face, but it's Ok, because in the new version the way the new chord progression just melts into the familiar progression of the original is just magic. It is slower than the original, but I think it works for the song. James does sing in his I&W style for most of the song, and this is a welcome change. He isn't singing as high as on the DoE/Subcon version--some of the vocal melodies have been changed. The vocal harmonies left me awestruck. They are so THICK! A lot of the new lyrics are really good. Mike really worked his ass of on the lyrics for this one. The highlights of this CD for me were when the great new stuf would stop and then the familiar old stuff would resume.

The Ronnie Scott's stuff sounds great. It's funny how much of this stuff I know and love but never knew the titles for. Does James even realize how incredible he sounds on "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'"? Good performances by everyone.

I think the production on ACoS could have been better. The guitar sounds a little bit buzzy--not enough grit. Derek uses his distorted guitar-meets- Hammond Organ sound. I would have liked to hear a more synth-y sound. It remains clear that, while Derek is EXTREMELY talented and is a great addition to the band, it was Kevin Moore who put the "soul" in "solo." Not enough tension/resolution happening in the key solos. Derek really shines on the FFaF/LLB stuff though. Mike's snare is anemic at best. It's not a very "metal" snare sound. I think it will be clear that the triggered snares were a must on I&W, while the best choice on Awake is the real snare. Also the vocals seem to be mixed a little low, similar to their live mix. James sounds great throughout the whole ACoS song, but in "The Crimson Sunset" it kind of sounds like he's worn out, or they rushed the production so much that they didn't have time to do it over. Finally, while the new stuff is great I wish they could have left all the old stuff in, too! Some of my favorite parts are missing. "PLEASE, DON'T GO!!!!" has been mentioned, but my other favorite part was the, "I stood outside/in the rain for us..." part and it's GONE!!! I believe that, now that I've heard the song, "mercy fuck" should have been included instead of "sympathy." But there are some great new lyrics in the song, which I won't mention here for the sake of those out there who don't have it yet. I hope I haven't spoiled too much already. :\

    Anyhoo, a great CD--essential stuff!!!

To that KNAC fan, whoever you are, I just want to add that I have two stickers on my car. One is my DT sticker (thank you very much), and the other is my KNAC sticker. Although, I must say I never thought to turn it upside down in mourning. Maybe I will. KNAC is the only radio station I have ever heard that is worth its salt. Maybe that is why it went spanish.

AS for DT's covers on the up and coming ACOS cd, I have many friends who may be converted based on the strength of DT's Zepplin covers. Not being a Zepplin fan, I'm not too interested in these covers, but seeing as how most of the student population identifies with Zepplin for whatever reason, this upcoming cd could blow the door wide open for DT on this campus. I have the feeling this is not limited to my campus.

Hang in their fellow yjammers, ACOS will come soon enough, and for a lucky few, "Acoustic Dreams" will follow closely behind. Until then, I recomend playing alot of soccer to ease your mind and relieve some of the cd anticipation anxiety.

Why is it that I'm a bass player, but when I listen to DT I find myself playing air drums more than air bass or air guitar?

Today's trivia tidbit: We've established Yes' relationship with Simon & Garfunkel in the song "America." What relationship does Rush have with S&G?

    In Houston they say that?

Try calling the radio station and approx the time you heard it and inquire...I am almost positive they have to keep records of what songs were played when and advertisement ect. ____________________________________________________________________________ "...the Miracle and the Sleeper know that the third is love; Love is the dance of eternity." I heard that DT reunited with Dave Prater to record ACOS. I also heard a couple of minutes of the tune. I like Derek's key-sound. The production was definately IAW era with the drums being natural like Awake. The tune was killer. I heard ACOS live on disc from some bootleg. It has changed a little. It is longer now, some 23 minutes. The rest of the ep is covers including Wayward Son by Kansas, Bohiemian Raspody by Queen and a few others. Anyone know if Kevin Moore has a name for his project? Are they signed yet?

Hello all: First off, I wanted to apologize...one of my friends read my post from two 'Jams ago and said I sounded kinda rude, so I just wanted to clear the air about that. Sorry. He suggested that I was trying to cover up for the fact that he KNEW that I did not listen to I&W all the way through when I first bought the CD, just tracks 1-4 and 7. Can you say "hypocrite?" ;) Secondly, in reference to Jun-Dai's comments about BraveHeart: you're right, it is not totally historically accurate. The BIGGEST goof is the battle at Falkirk. The movie forgot entirely about the three-men wide bridge that the English soldiers had to cross and the fact the the Scots took advantage of them by attacking when they only had half of their men across. In the Scots defense ..Hell! I would've done the same thing! Now that I have the "..." out of the way, onto Yippee: When I first bought my new speakers 5 weeks ago, I went to put in my Teastament _The Ritual_ CD (after, of course, listerning to my two DT CDs... ;) To my dismay, it was not in its case. I looked through all of my cases and alas!...I could not find it. I was eternally bummed. (I have a very personal attachment to this CD...for those of you who know the album, it is all about "Return To Serenity".) Yesterday I was bumming around Best Buy, and lo and behold, there is _The Ritual_ sitting there in the cut-out section. Just one sitting there saying "BUY ME!!!" It was only $5.99, so I couldn't refuse. YIPPEE!...in that same trip, and along with a few more stoppings by other local music stores (EXCEPT Sam Goody, Musicland, and Tower, for obvious reasons), I asked the clerks to look up the release date of ACoS. Here in SoCal it is...

    ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! SEPTEMBER 19th ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

As you can tell, I am just slightly jazzed. BTW, Best Buy has it listed at $11.99. The other stores couldn't (wouldn't) tell me. So everyone who hasn't be fortunate enough (like me) to receive a promo, keep your pants on! It's almost here!!!

This is the message included in the Japanese version of ACoS from Mike Portnoy to all the Japanese Dream Theater fans:

GREETINGS ONCE AGAIN TO OUR LOYAL AND BELOVED JAPANESE FANS!!

It is with great pleasure that we present to you this collection of odds and ends from the Dream Theater vault. The new and improved recorded version of "ACOS" is something that we've been longing to do for many years now and are very excited to have finally released.

We were able to make many changes (musically, lyrically, and melodically) from the original 1989 version, which can give you a sense of where we were, where we are, and where we are going. It also marks the first recorded performance of our new keyboardist, Derek Sherinian, whose talents shall prove to be a very valuble asset to both the writing and enthusiasm of the band. Welcome aboard Derek!! The "Uncovered" show at Ronnie Scott's was a one-of-a-kind, unique experience for all of us involved. During our tour of Japan in January of 1995, while you fans were gearing up to attend our shows, we were onstage at soundchecks learning endless amounts of cover songs. (In fact, we even threw Pink Floyd's "In The Flesh" into a couple of our shows on that tour to test it out on stage!) Here's a brief walk-through of the tracks we selected for inclusion on this release:

    1. "Funeral for a friend / Love lies Bleeding" The often overlooked Elton John masterpiece that really seemed right up our alley to cover. (The long and mysterious instrumental overture combined with a great melodic rock & roll song.) When citing our influences, everybody is very quick to point out our Progressive Rock or Heavy Metal favorites. However, we are also big fans of classic, mainstream stuff like Elton, Billy Joel, U2, Journey, Peter Gabriel, The Beatles, etc.

    2. "Perfect Strangers" Deep Purple were an obvious choice as a band for us to cover. They were one of the first bands to combine progressive elements with metallic overtones. They also use keyboards as a predominant and lead instrument in the same way that we do. We originally chose and rehearsed "Child In Time", but on the day before the "Uncovered" show, we recorded a version of "Perfect Strangers" with Bruce Dickinson on vocals for his BBC1 radio show in England. It felt so powerful and alive that we decided to go with this track instead.

    3. "The Rover/Achilles Last Stand/The Song Remains The Same" Led Zeppelin were THE band of the '70's to any teenager growing up in America at the time. Their influence on modern music is practically unparalleled by any other band. Their extensive, improvised jams in their live shows set the precedent for bands (including Dream Theater!) who occasionally dabble in a bit of self-indulgence. Choosing a Zeppelin song to cover was a tough one because there are so many classics and a lot of them have already been done. We decided to choose three of the less-likely choces and combine them for a mini-medley. We were fortunate enough to have the privilege of playing several shows with the reunited Page/Plant this past summer in Germany, and those shows only confirmed their status as legitimate living legends!

    4. The Big Medley In June of 1990, while still searching for that "right" vocalist we did an instrumental show on Long Island, New York, under the moniker of "Ytse Jam". The encore of that show was a medley made up of old favorites of ours, and we used that medley as a blueprint for this medley.

    A) "In The Flesh?" - The opening track to possibly the greatest album of all time. (Pink Floyd's "The Wall") Pink Floyd have always been a huge influence to us and this seemed to be a great start to the big medley. B) "Carry On Wayward Son" - The old classic Kansas AOR radio hit. They were an incredibly talented band, and maybe one of the most overlooked of the progressive rock movement of the '70's. C) "Bohemian Rhapsody" - Our original medley from 1990 included this piece, and that was before "Wayne's World" made this song a household name. Queen are another huge influence for us and they made some of the most innovative music of the '70's. D) "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" - A bit of nostalgia here: This was the very first song we played with James when he auditioned for the band in January of 1991. Steve Perry is one of James' biggest vocal influences and, judging by the way he sings this song, you'll see why he got the gig with us!! E) "Cruise Control" - The Dixie Dregs were the original, instrumental, progressive band. Their virtuosity was untouchable and their influence on us is immeasurable. They never got the appreciation that they deserved. (Except, of course, from John Petrucci, who still to this day cites Steve Morse as his biggest guitar hero!) F) "Turn It On Again" - It probably would have been more appropriate for us to have covered an older, more progressive song by Genesis, but this one really seemed to wrap up the big medley quite nicely. Maybe at the next "Uncovered" show we can do "Firth of Fifth"......or "In The Cage"......or "Supper's Ready"......or........

Enjoy and we'll c-ya on tour again real soon. Kanpai!!

To the guy who asked if the Japanese and American versions are the same: Yes, unfortunately they are this time. *Sigh* (Just when I was ready to get the Japanese version, it turns out that it's the same!) Along with the Japanese CD, is a coupon to send in for a drawing to get one of 1000 3" CD's containing the cover of Rush's "Winter" and (Correct me if I'm wrong) Metallica's "Damage Inc." It is NOT for the first 1000 people to send it in. It's a random drawing with 1000 winners. *Sigh*

To those who have asked why so often Japanese versions of CD's include extra songs, it's because of the Yen-Dollar exchange rate. It is such that in Japan, American import CD's are in fact cheaper than the Japanese releases. In order for Japanese people to "Buy Japanese", they often include extra songs on the Japanese releases.

I think that's all I've got to say for now. Ta Ta for now!
