There are NO similarities between DT and Rush, musically speaking...
Rush sucks!!!! They have nothing to do with each other!!!!
By the way, let's stoping saying that DT is a progressive band. DT is a METAL
band!!!!!! Listen to Petrucci's , Portnoy's and Myung's sound and you'll see
what heavy metal means...
Sorry to all the Rush fans, but DT is the best ...

Why is it I'm a vocalist and I NEVER air sing!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think all vocalists think they can play drums better than drummers, or at
least with more style. That's because since we're air drumming, we can
concentrate on fake stick spins and other glam techniques. Just my
over-analysis! :) LATER-

I'm with you, man. SDV is actually (gasp) my favorite song on Awake.
I could listen to the last two to three minutes, when the melody picks
up forever.
It is the most relaxing song. If you just want to sit there and wind
down, SDV is the perfect song.
It is also the ultimate song to help you focus on things. It is the
first song on my tape compilation titled "songs to do homework to."
It's a masterpiece, and I too am dissapointed at the lack of respect it
gets. It's kind of like High Hopes on the Division Bell. They just
don't receive the attention they merit.

Man....I think it's really F**KED up that someone has the audacity to
sell a copy of Subconscious for more that he paid for it. Yeah, they're
rare, but Mike Bahr made them because of his love for DT's music. He
made almost nothing for all the work he put in to the project.
Personally, I think we should handle this sort of like Kevin's demo
tapes were handled with a bunch of dub sites open around the world.
Anyway, I'm willing to manage a dub site list if anyone else is willing
to do tapes in addition to me. I'm only going to make a few tape copies
of my CD (#68 cause I owe Mike one :). I don't have a great stereo, but it
will make decent copies. If you want one, e-mail me. I'm located in
San Jose, California, and if other dub sites open, I'll handle Northern
California.

Hi all!
I agree that the ACOS EP version and Subcon version of ACOS are
different and yet neither is better or worse... there's a few parts I
like on the Subcon version, but I admit I _love_ the studio version of
the song. I'll buy the Cd when it comes out just because I gotta have it. :)
The thing about the two versions is, the more you listen to either one,
the more you appreciate both it and the other.
To all those of you who go to the Portnoy drum clinics: let him
know I'm dying to talk to him again, especially now that he's had a
chance to hear the Cds, and that he's got some copies of Acoustic Dreams
waiting for him. :) I hope he goes a drum show in Phoenix!
Anyway I'm posting an update but just to let people know: I've
sent out every Cygnus ordered through today. So unless you *just sent*
your mail with the order, it's probably on the way.
Raw or smooth voice (James): Both. I'd rather he try to do
everything with excellence than do one thing perfectly. Dominici did a
perfect pussy-fag voice (sorry to the Charlie fans, I still think he's a
good singer and all, and I liked WDADU, but let's be honest here) and
LaBrie is doing things more like Sebastian Bach and Ben Huggins, two
vocalists I'm generally quite awed by. Both know how to do the smooth
high melodies and the rough crunch of appropriate passages.
Acoustic Dreams - will be out on schedule, barring the
unforeseen. I just checked today with my friends in printing and
materials, and everything points to an early release... but I just want
to try and get it "on time". :)
I should put _my_ band's desecrated version of Pull ME Under on
WDATU... heh. Nah, I wouldn't subject you all to that torture.

DREAM THEATER: "ACOUSTIC DREAMS"
Information and Update
Current to 9/14/1995
NOTE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
I found the culprit of my account's untimely death...
Hi all! This is the latest information on Acoustic Dreams, the new
LIMITED EDITION Dream Theater CD I will be producing. It will be a numbered,
hand-initialed limited print just like Subconscious was.
============================================================================
DISCLAIMER: Acoustic Dreams falls into a grey area of law as an uncopyrighted
recording produced in such a manner that at least one facet of the production
occurs in a country (namely Italy) in which it is legal to do so. In the USA,
it is permissible to sell used import CDs only if they are labeled as such.
This is such a CD. Be aware that the various powers-that-be are collecting
nothing for this.
============================================================================
Of course, that's all cover-my-butt lawyerspeak. I hope you all will
want to be a part of this. I make roughly minimum wage doing it, so you know
I'm not out to scam you. In all humility, I appeal to anyone who might not
think too kindly of my endeavor, and ask that they might give me the benefit
of the doubt on this one. Friends? :)
1. What is Acoustic Dreams?
2. What is the release schedule?
3. How can I get my own copy of Acoustic Dreams?
4. Orders received.
============================================================================
1. What is Acoustic Dreams?
Hi all! Allow me to introduce myself, if you aren't familiar with me
yet. I'm Mike Bahr, humble maker of special-edition CDs. I noticed a lot of
the mass-manufactured bootleg offerings were spiralling quite high in price
and yet offered little for the die-hard fan, and I concocted a scheme by
which I could make around minimum wage by producing CDs on my own, CDs that
would fill the demand for REAL rarities and special songs, unreleased items,
live shows, and the like.
Basically, since no CD plant will print them for me, I have to rent
studio and equipment time and do it myself. So far, it's working. :)
Fortunately, and for this I am very relieved, my CD efforts so far
have been incredibly well-received by the net community, especially the
Ytsejam mailing list. I just do what I can do and leave the rest up to God,
and I guess the Almighty isn't disappointing you folks. People from all walks
of life, all countries of the world, both sexes, all races, and all religions
have joined in on the Subconscious and Cygnus projects, and I am very happy
to have you all along for the ride. I'll keep making CDs as long as you folks
are willing to keep buying them. Thanks so _very_ much... :)
And now, I have Acoustic Dreams on tap.
Well, this is the current CD I'm doing, also known as Dream Theater
Unplugged. We were given a VERY high-quality soundboard tape of DT's recent
Unplugged performance in Europe, and it can only be fully expressed in the
form of a CD. Trust me. :) I am fervently hoping that the finished product
is well-liked. I've created the master DAT and submitted it and I got the
glass master made.
Here's the final tracklisting from Acoustic Dreams. I know many
were hoping I'd find more stuff, but I've pretty much scraped the
barrel dry at this point. The only other things of similar sound
quality I could find were in soundboard shows that ought to be
released to CD in their entirety.
Acoustic Dreams
1. Another Day
2. Lifting Shadows off a Dream
3. Wait For Sleep
4. The Silent Man
5. Lie (boogie version)
6. Tears (Rush cover)
7. O Holy Night
Electric Extras
8. Perfect Strangers (with Bruce Dickinson on vocals)
9. 6:00 (performed in session with a much better mix)
10. Caught In A Web (another better performance)
Bonus Tracks (acoustic)
11. Voices (just a small part of it was all there was) acoustic
12. Bad (U2 cover) acoustic
I hope that once you've heard it, you will, like me, have your
breath taken away by the beauty of the acoustic tracks and the clarity and
sharpness of the electric mixes. As good as Cygnus sounded, this is easily
and by far the best sounding CD I will have ever made.
2. What is the release schedule?
Here is the current schedule of releases as I see it (all dates estimated):
NOW - Rush: Cygnus released/shipping
NOW - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" ordering begins
09/30/1995 - Dream Theater: "Acoustic Dreams" released/shipping
10/15/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" ordering begins
11/15/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" ordering begins
11/30/1995 - Public Affection: "The Death of a Dictionary" released/shipping
12/25/1995 - Dream Theater: "When Dream and Today Unite" released/shipping
02/--/1996 - Rush: To be announced
04/--/1996 - Live or Type O-Negative: To be announced
06/--/1996 - Dream Theater: To be announced
Here are a few descriptions to keep your curiosity satiated :)
Dream Theater "In The Subconscious" - 1 piece - sold
Also known as Subconscious #000, this original pre-mix master CD
has all the songs in their original, unrefined state, and was
sold along with the rest. Quite the collector's piece, I'd wager.
Is on a gold CD-R with test cover.
Dream Theater "Subconscious"
Released 04/03/1995 - Limited Edition - 500 copies - sold out
Contained Dream Theater rarities including A Change of Season.
Rush "Cygnus" Alpha Test Print
Released 08/07/1995 - 5 pieces - given away to random testers
Identical to the regular release of Cygnus except has a different
cover (original white cover), has dropouts as-is (no fadeouts),
and is in a few other ways just a "test print". Only edition of
Cygnus ever to say "Rush: Cygnus" and not "Cygnus Tribute" because
I was able to make the bland black & white covers myself.
Rush "Cygnus"
Released 08/14/1995 - Unlimited Edition - still available
Contains a rare soundboard show from the Hemispheres tour.
Dream Theater "Acoustic Dreams"
Currently in pre-ordering.
To be released 09/30/1995 - Limited Edition of 500 copies
Each copy will be hand signed/numbered in gold for authenticity.
Contains beautiful unplugged performances.
Public Affection "The Death of a Dictionary"
To be released 11/30/1995 - Unlimited print
Is actually +Live+'s little-known first album, released in 1989,
two years before their 1991 breakthrough Mental Jewelry. Demand for
this one is skyrocketing, and the Jam gets first shot at it.
Dream Theater "When Dream and Today Unite"
To be released 12/25/1995 - Limited print of either 500 or 1000.
Contains the songs from Dream and Day only with James LaBrie on
vocals. Collected from MANY sources and optimized for quality.
Some of these still need quality boosts. (Light Fuse, STS...)
The following are all "Work in Progress" releases...
Rush other titles I'm considering (for any of the given shows):
Land's Edge, Storm World, Lifeforce, Arena of the Ancients...
Rush "A Symptom of Life" - from 12/20/81 2nd gen soundboard
Contains a LOT of neat stuff. a LOT. But very long... 2 CD set?
Rush "Concordant Crossroads" - from 3/24/81 audience MASTER in stereo
This one has unbelievable good sound quality. It's a tossup whether
to take this or Symptom, since both are so good but so similar.
Rush "Sleight of Mind" - from a remastered 6/25/75 Toronto
This tour has been very underrepresented in available material, so
who knows, if S.H.'s cleanup efforts turn out good...
+Live+ "Disenchanting Discourse" - from a 10/25/94 audience MASTER in stereo
It might be released, it might not, depending on many things. If you
would like to see it released, please let me know and let as many
people know as you can. I tend to find ways to release things when
I find an overwhelming demand for them. :)
Type O-Negative "Deathgrip" - from a 5/30/94 audience MASTER in stereo
A great setlist and decent sound. Only my worries about how many
copies I can sell prevent this. I can't undertake anything less than
a potential sellout project or I risk going under. Again, if this is
a title you'd like to see, you can make it happen. All I need is a
lot of interest, and away we go! So far I've had a few positive
replies... much much more are needed though.
Dream Theater... oh who knows, there's so much good stuff.
Possible shows:
Osaka soundboard from late 1992
Hamburg soundboard from spring 1993
Vocalist auditions
various excellent DATs recorded in Texas
3. How can I order a copy of Acoustic Dreams?
Finally, I am going to go ahead and let the ordering begin, because
I can tell everyone's excitement level is peaking at this point. :) I will
say this in advance: I expect it to come out 9/30 or thereabouts (I'm going
to try and beat my own schedule) and that's two months away, folks. If that
dosen't bother you too much, I guess it won't bother me either. However, I'm
one of those guys who hates having things take too long. :)
I say this because Subconscious took an unbelievably long time to
turnaround due to delays in the making of it, and despite my best efforts,
Cygnus is going a bit too slow for my taste as well (though it's still within
the predicted schedule, it was a schedule I had been planning to beat). So I
am trying to jumpstart Acoustic Dreams so there's NO DAMN WAITING. :)
FORTUNATELY, we're STILL ON SCHEDULE for release 9/30. Yes!!!
Here's the nitty gritty then:
RESERVATIONS. I'll take them, to save you a COPY, but not necessarily a
_specific copy_. In many cases, people who request special numbers
such as birthdays and so on will get them. But people requesting a
specific low number are going to find that they're all sold. Which
brings me to the next point:
ORDERS. The numbering, excepting special requests when possible, will fill
in the order I receive the mail orders. It's only fair after all.
I'll reserve a copy for someone over e-mail, but if thirty people
get their orders in before he or she does, it's not fair for me to
still hold copy #014 or whatever. You all get the idea... these
decisions are just in the effort to make it fair for all.
Please, I stress to all of you, don't miss this if you missed
Subconscious. It really does pain me to have to tell a fellow DT fan that
there simply aren't any more Sub discs to be had, especially because I would
be MORE than glad to sell one if I had it.
Blanks, materials, studio time, etc is cheaper per unit for a
production line of 1000 than for 500, which is why Cygnus was cheaper for the
Ytsejammers. Acoustic Dreams, alas, must remain $25. I was hoping to bring it
down to $21 or $20 but that wouldn't be cost effective. I think I may be able
to do that for the Public Affection CD, however.
Things are pretty simple from here. Send along a money order for
$25 bucks to my address, being sure to include a note with your name, the
address to ship to, your email address, and WHICH CD you're ordering (after
all, Cygnus is still in ordering) and HOW MANY you're ordering. As before,
international customers may use whatever means of payment is most convenient
for them, though I stress that sending cash is risky and should not be a
first option, but a backup plan. :) Also, to pool opinions: would you all
want me to include a number list as orders are received?
The address and so on is me at:
Mike "Acoustic Dreamer" Bahr
3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
Chandler, AZ 85224
My home telephone number, available as a courtesy to you, is
1-602-777-0501. I am usually not home on weekends (band practice) so try
during the week, between noon and 9pm pacific time, for best results. Also,
please use discretion when handling this number, as it is, after all, my own
home phone, and I will be very confused if a stranger calls at 3:00 AM. :)
I trust you Jammers to be cool about it, as you always have in the past.
4. Orders received.
This is NOT "reservations"... it's paid-for orders. If you have a
reservation, it's still valid, trust me. :) These are just the numbers that
are filled. Also there are a handful of "saved numbers" in there.

NOTICE OF AVAILABILITY: RUSH - CYGNUS
UPDATE for 9/14/1995
NOTICE: INTERNET EMAIL ADDRESS CHANGE: I am now durnik@indirect.com
QUICK NOTICE: I finally got to the bottom of why so many Cds that had been
sent at the same time were not yet delivered... the post office had
a mis-sort and the list of addresses they gave me pretty much
matched those of the people who were e-mailing me, asking about
their CD. I gave them the evil eye for this blunder, and they seem
to be getting them delivered in good time *now*, as about half of
the lost/mis-sorted CDs have now arrived safely. So if you haven't
seen yours and it wasn't an order that was *just recently* sent,
it should be there shortly. So far, of the 16 CDs that turned up
delayed by this, 9 have been confirmed as received by the people
in question. I'm hoping the other 7 are gonna be there soon.
NOTE: I have sent out ALL CDS ordered through TODAY! If you mailed it and
I have received your mail, your CD is going, going, gone! On its
way to you. So guessing approximately, anything sent up until
Monday is probably enroute to you.
Hi all! It's time to update y'all on the CD project. I have finally
received my shipment of the Rush CYGNUS CD, a CD with an incredible sound
board show from the mystical Hemispheres tour, on it. And I guess I will go
ahead and take orders for it... if you like, you can email a reservation
before you send your check or MO. Here's the info:

I did a pre-order project like this for the Dream Theater mailing list
a few months back and it worked out very, very well. Any of you who want a
reference or voucher for me, direct your question at any DT fan who is on
the Ytsejam list, and I'll let their judgment be the Word.
How to order:
(PLEASE ALLOW 3 to 4 WEEKS FOR DELIVERY.)
-A lot of you might have forgotten about this. Since I'm
caught up to today's orders for mailing, it's not likely to
take quite this long anymore.
Send a cashier's check or money order (made out to me) to:
Michael Bahr
Limelight Music
3175 N. Price Rd. #1066
Chandler, AZ 85224
Note: I'm just a humble fan with a project going, not a store
or CD warehouse... the dealers and mailorder places can give
way better prices on other common boots so I don't have or
sell any of them. Limelight is what I put on my business license
so that I could pay sales tax, thus nobody would ask how I was
getting all this money to deposit and why I'd dump thousands
at a time into CD production. :)
The price is as follows:
$25 US - base
free - postage within the USA
$1 - postage to Canada
$2 - postage to anywhere else
So it would cost $25 to send it to Humble, Texas... $26 to
send it to Lakeside Park... and $27 to Geleen, Holland.
There are around 150 copies left... get 'em while they exist! :)
A note on quality. A lot of people ask me how does the sound compare
to A Right to Passage and Spirit of St. Louis. Well, I guess I can give you
all a rough idea. Speaking comparatively, ARTP emphasizes the booming bass
sound the most and has the muddiest guitar and vocals of the three, but is
otherwise probably the richest- and fullest-sounding; SOSL has more of the
the booming bass and great vocals, but a muddy guitar, muddy drums, and too
much high-end distortion, and Cygnus has less boom (the drums still give a
mighty THUMP, but you hear the "thwap twang thwap" of Geddy's bass strings
as opposed to an indistinct booming resonance), the stereo separation is
clearer, and vocals are the clearest of the three. Vocals are really the
standout on Cygnus... it sounds like Geddy's standing in your room. So if you
want to crank up the subwoofer and crumble the walls, buy ARTP. But if you
like to be able to hear bass slap and cool effects, try Cygnus. As some
people have noted, there are some DROPOUTS that have been masked as well as
I could. They were present on the master tape, so I couldn't do much but
try to repair the gaping holes they left. I hope they won't ruin it for you.
Finally, remember that concerts back in 1978 didn't emphasize punch like
they do today, and you WILL have to crank the bass if you want this Cd to
thump-thump-boom away. It's guitar- and vocal-heavy balancewise.
Now then, back to ordering via cashier's check or MO.
Why use a cashier's check or MO? Besides the fact that they can't
bounce, they are traceable both ways. You know that if you don't eventually
get a CD or a refund, I'll be in deep shit. :) It's really the safest way to
buy, as I myself have been burned in net dealings before, I do my best to
alleviate those fears where my projects are concerned.
Apparently, this offer isn't as limited as I originally thought...
~425 copies have been ordered so far. Still, this CD is bound to become
very valuable as it is a rare and much-coveted concert. Already, my first CD
offering "Dream Theater/Subconscious" is being re-sold by others for twice
what I originally sold them all for. And I'm afraid it sold out
completely... there are no more left to sell!
PLEASE! When you send the money order, TELL ME that you're ordering
the Cygnus CD. Most of you are already doing this, I just wanted to make sure
you all knew, as I am still wrapping up work on Subconscious, as well as
taking the early pre-orders for the next Dream Theater CD. Also, be sure to
include your email address. It's quite hard to get ahold of you if something
goes awry, without it. :)
A note on the CD LABEL: It does not say the word "Rush" anywhere on it
but all the songs are labelled correctly (Anthem, The Trees, Hemispheres,
etc.) and it says "Cygnus" rather prominently. Dont let this nuance of
labelling throw you off. A lot of you are already familiar with this, but
before the Italian Cd companies started legally making boots in recent years,
boots produced in the USA could not bear the band's name on their labels.
Look at Rush boots like "Through any Window" and "Nassau '82".. on the record
labels they have fake band names and song names. I just put the real song
names and "Cygnus" and left Rush off, since I didn't want to complicate things
any more than they already were. It _IS_ the Rush show from 11/20/78 and it
is already well known here on the net, if a bit scarce.
If anyone has any questions, please feel free to email me or call me
at (602) 777-0501, between the hours of 6pm and 11pm Pacific time. I'm sorry
that I don't have an answering machine (as this is my home line, it's mainly
available to all of you as a courtesy) but if I'm there, we'll chat. I do
have classes these days so I may or may not be there. I do have work and
school like the rest of you, after all. Please understand why you may not
catch me at home the first three or four times you try. If the phone rings,
I *WILL* answer it if I'm there, that much I will definitely
promise you. If you miss me entirely and want *me* to call *you*, I will
do so if you leave your number in email. Please understand that it will
probably be brief as I'm a starving student with a phone bill. :)
Thanks all!

Thank YOU! If you weren't gonna say it, I was. I'm not too worried because
I had it weeks ago, and if you were in Madison, WI, you could hear it on my
radio show. :-) I get calls for it all the time. Keep 'em coming, I know
there are more fans out there!

>>I absolutely despise Dominici's spoiling of the Killing Hand.
How could you say that he "spoiled" a song he originally sang.
In my own Opinion, WDADU is Great. I admit that he is not the
best vocalist live, but he is a great studio singer.
Charlie isn't very effective live, if you ever heard Metropolis
done by Dominici, it just lacks the power LaBrie puts into the
songat the live shows. But on The Album,Dominici is pretty Damn good.
>>Just curious why there are so many who do not like space dye vest.
Who doesn't like SDV?!? I thought the majority liked it.
Although it is very different from the rest of the album, its still a
great song.

Arright folks, I'm going to be putting issue 11 of METROPOLIS WATCH (for
those of you that don't read every single Jam, are new to the list, or you've
been living under a rock, MW is the only US Dream Theater fanzine) together
in about a month, so if any of you have stuff you want included, you're
welcome to start sending it now! I'm looking for: reviews of any kind (CD,
demo, single) of primarily prog and power metal bands (there's been a lot of
talk about Shadow Gallery; I would gladly print a review of them), live shows
(anyone who was at the last few Dream Theater shows in NJ or Providence?) A
review of "ACOS" is most definitely requested. I'm also looking for DT
photos, live and/or candid.
Or - anything else anyone can think of that they think would be appropriate.
Please, feel free to email me with ideas; I'm open to most anything.

Well, I know the station's numbers weren't that great;
and, as you probably know, the bottom line for any
radio station is *the bottom line.* No numbers, no
advertisers...no advertisers, no money. No money,
No station. Sad, but the simple truth of the radio biz.
That, and it probably snagged the wrong demographic
share...but, c'est la vie. =)>
I listened to the end of KNAC of have corresponded with a couple of their DJs
online. The reason they went off the air was that the parent company decided
to sell out and pocket a bunch of cash. They were approached by a Mexican
entertainment group to sell the station.
They made them an offer they couldn't refuse. : )

According to Brian Slagel of Metal Blade, Andre Corbin did indeed
replace Frank Aresti. That's about as reliable as it can get.
