Look - I'd like to apologize for my tendency to ramble
on audio stuff...it's just a habit, I s'pose. Then again,
if I could explain it more briefly, I would, but, I have
to take into consideration that we've got people on
here that know more than me, down to people who
know nothing about audio, except how to use their
stereos at home & in the car. =)
Point being, I'm just trying to be lucid & thorough,
and I'd just like to apologize to anyone who might be
preturbed.
That, and let's take this private. Mr. Keegan did, and
had the right idea. =)
Regarding Subconsious:
The radio station I work at *JUST* got in some new
equipment...a DAT recorder/player, a new tape deck,
an Eventide Harmonizer (the manual for which is over
200 pages...), and one other that might be of interest
to you Subconsious-Seekers.
Now, if you figure out what I'm talking about, or you
already have, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE
DO NOT EMAIL ME ABOUT THIS. If you have NO idea
what I'm talking about, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT YET!
I will look into the use of this particular piece of gear, and
I will let you know if what I would like to try is PLAUSABLE.
Again, please - No Email Yet. Thank You. =)

Ya know, to be honest with you, Mark, (and the rest of you 'Jammers), Metal
tape's playback was that lingering question from childhood (what - you
thought
I learned all this in college? <g>) that I could NEVER get a correct answer
to,
and, besides, knowing how much Jim hates cassettes (have I overstated that?),
I never asked. There were more important things to bug him about. <g>
So, thank you for clarifying that for me - I *knew* it was normal play back
for CrO2,
and Normal (obviously)...but was NEVER sure about Metal!
Incidentally: In the future, could all of you lurking engineers help me out
with
some of these questions? I DEFINITELY do NOT mind being corrected, if I am
wrong.
>This is why a good question to ask when you are purchasing a car stereo

the

I just got car stereo #3 installed. I went in looking at the stereos, and
asked
the guy what frequencies the Bass/Treble controls altered. He wasn't sure.
He grabbed the summary binder. It wasn't there. I said to the guy, "In case
you ever get another smart ass like me in here, it's generally 10khz on the
treble, and 100hz on the bass." <grin>
I also pointed out to him that someone had managed to blow one of the
store's display speakers. I then went around and harrassed Circuit City
Employees for the next 2.5 hours. <grin>
Another Question to ask an employee to piss them off:
When you're watching a movie on the home stereo system, and the
salesperson asks if you need help, and you want him/her to leave, say:
"Yes, could you tell me the crossover frequency for the subwoofer on this
unit?"
I did this once. It sent the poor guy into the office to get the manual. =)
He
handed it to me. I looked through it, and it wasn't there. I said, "Well, I
think it's
usually around 50hz, isn't it?" He said, "I'm not sure." I handed him the
manual
back, and sat down & watched the movie in surround-sound peace. No one
bothered me. =)
>[Gary] teaches classes on studio recording and classes about stereo
>equipment. Very decent guy and a good way to pad the cume.
Jim's classes worked that way for me, actually. =) However, there was a price
to pay: I got to hear his "History Of Tape Heads" lecture three times...and
the
"Big Picture" lecture at least four times...that was the one where he drew a
diagram
starting with the band in the recording room, _ALL_ the way through the
recording
process, up until the recording being processed by the listener's ears. If
you know
what I'm talking about, IMAGINE sitting through a speech on that FOUR TIMES.
I got my revenge, however - on the test where he asked us to give a brief
description
of it, I reproduced the entire thing, almost verbatim. Took up two pages of
the test:
diagrams, pictures, labels, cross-references, footnotes, etc. =)
I actually did a brief summary of the effects of temprature on sound in class
once...
..oh, I'VE GOTTA STOP MYSELF!!!!!!! Ugh, That's ENOUGH!!!!
Now, *I* have a question: Does anyone actually READ all the shit I spew
on audio, or do you just skip it? God knows I'd skip it.

Hi,
YIPPEE!!! It's out today and I've got it!!!!
I haven't heard it yet though, but it looks nice!!!!
There's a message on the inner cover from DT, which looks different
to the message posted last week on the Japanese version.
The full message on the UK version is as follows:
Hey there once again!
"A Change Of Seasons" was originally written back in 1989 along with
"Metropolis Part I", and was intended to be included on "Images And
Words". After much speculation and delay, two live performances in
1993, and a lot of re-working this past May, we finally got the
opportunity to record it. In order to re-capture the spirit of the
"Images And Words" sessions, we re-united with David Prater, Doug
Oberkircher and Bear Tracks Studios. We feel the song has come a
long way in the past six years and here it is!
Many thanks must be given to the on-line "Ytse-Jammers" who helped
make this recording finally become a reality.
The 2nd half of this recording is taken from the "Uncovered" show
which we did at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London this past January.
The idea behind the show was to have a little fun and pay tribute to
some of the bands we grew up listening to, in a small and intimate
setting. We had to learn over and hour and a half's worth of cover
songs in our hotel rooms and at soundchecks during our Japanese Tour
at the beginning of 1995 (not to mention, go through the tragic Kobe
Earthquake!).
In the end, the "Uncovered" show, and all the events leading up to
it, were a very memorable experience for us all. The weekend was
made even more special because it gave us the opportunity to work
with some great artists and friends, such as Steve Hogarth and Steve
Rothery of Marillion, Barney Greenaway of Napalm Death, Bruce
Dickinson and Steve Howe. Here are some excerpts from that very
special evening.
We hope this tides you over until we release our next full length
album sometime in 1996.
See ya then!! -- Dream Theater

Does anybody know of any ftp sites that have DT bitmaps? I don't

Here are several questions. I'm sure some of them have been asked and
answered too many times, but (as usual!) I wasn't around for them
(sniff sniff). SOOOOO here comes another round of boring questions. 8^)
I'd appreciate ANY responses. (I get YTSEJAM posts in digest form, so
if you post a question back to me, realize there will be some delay.)
Thanks in advance! -Dero
1) CDEUROPE (telnet to CDEUROPE.COM) has a version of DT's _Awake_
listed as "AWAKE + BONUS LIVE CD SIN". The people at CDEUROPE
couldn't tell me what is on the CD. I can't find what this bonus CD
contains. Is it a boot or really some authorized, but little known,
bonus CD?
2) I read that Kevin Moore left due to "musical differences" and that
he was going to pursue a Fusion path. Yet the demos I got of Kevin
are anything but Fusion (at least as I understand it). Anyone care to
add anything more? (No pun intended.) What _is_ he currently doing?
(Was there a big fallout between band members?!)
3) Does anyone know the origin of the title "Puppies On Acid", which
is the instrumental intro to "Take The Time"? Is it now called something
else? What boots or official releases does it appear on?
4) The "Live In Long Island: Home At Last" boot lists the following
tracks on the second CD: 4. A Change Of Seasons, 5. Another Won, 6.
Your Majesty, 7. Two Far, 8. March Of The Tyrant.
This CD was recorded Oct. 4, 1992. First question, are tracks 6-8
live with James or just the Majesty demos thrown on for filler? Second
question, according to the promo version of ACOS, the text says DT only
played "ACOS" live twice: once in NY and once in Germany. Well, the
above boot is dated OCt. 4, 1992, and includes "ACOS" live (supposedly).
The _Dance Of Eternity_ CDs, with a live record date of Mar. 4, 1993,
_does_ contain "ACOS" live. Also, according to a Nov. 1990 boot listing,
DT played an instrumental version of "ACOS" live. (See item 5 below.)
5) Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Sundance, Bayshore (NY)
Nov. 17, 1990 all instrumental show? It includes a version of "ACOS"
and an interesting medley of cover tunes.
6) Several boots contain "Moon Bubbles" and "Barfbag" as tracks. Are
there instrumentals? Are these official band titles or fixed by the
bootleggers?

well, as i said a couple of issues ago (everyone ignores me), wally farkus is the new guitarist for GC. the new album is done. dane and his brother len have a new blues-based band called 'brotherhood' that is gigging around houston. he practically begged me to show up and bring friends, he said *no one* was showing for their gigs...
alan doss of GC has also been busy. he produced my friends' band's new cd, due out soon. their name is tellus, they are from dallas, and they are a fantastic band. "tellus" means "silent planet" in malacandran in the "out of the silent planet" c.s. lewis book, so there is your king's x connection... hehe

Well, after months of waiting, the 18th is finally here, and, to my utmost suprise, all the 4 major record shops have copies of ACoS in! The price varies from 8 to 15 pounds, though..
First thoughts - What's wrong with the artwork? looks great to me! The liner says that its Mike Portnoy's concept.
As I'm typing now, my first listen is ending with the acoustic outro. I'm impressed! It's MUCH slower than the two versions I've heard (Subcon and the audition tape (Chris Clintron?). James' voice is in top form, and you can even hear the odd note of bass guitar which makes a change :-/...
The production is generally good; however I have a couple of small niggles: some of the mixing is slightly rough and unsubtle making the changes between sections less smooth than they might be. I'm not yet convinced by the bright snare (I might be in time, though). John P uses quite a grungy sound at some points, but it does fit in well. The harmonies are great, but I wonder if they will be able to pull them off live (I remember John P doing some at one point)?
It's going to take a while to get used to the differences in this version. It'll be MONTHS before I stop shouting "SIEZE THE DAY" at the top of my voice at 9:48 where it is on the subcon version (I think.) I might start shouting it at 10:08 where it fits in with the fill.
Then again, if they'd released exactly the version I already have I might have been dissappointed - and who am I to complain anyway :)
more thoughts later, when Ive listened to it a couple of hundred times more!

I don't think I have a rock attitude. I only mentioned that Derek was playing the part wrong, because he was. If you want to interpret a cover song your way, that's fine, and I don't have a problem with that. But, in the same respect, at least when I do covers, there are some parts to a song you should play right and some parts where you can do what you feel. And as far as solos, if the band wrote the song, the band has every license to change it. I don't play the written keyboard solos in my songs verbatum all the time. I am a very improvisational player. I play what I feel. So, I am not knocking anybody, and I think Derek is a great keyboard player, and maybe he did do that Queen piano part wrong on purpose. But, I also know from experience that some people's ear training is not as good as others, and they play what they hear, but they're not hearing it right. Due to my visual impairment, I had to develope my ear to a perfect science, and I can hear everything in a song, even parts that are supposed to be subliminal. so, I get a little unnerved when I know someting isn't right. I am trying to be more patient and realize that something s are interpretted differently, and som people can't train their ears the way I have. I am getting there, but I still feel that way when I hear parts that are wrong. You don't want to know what I say when I hear the new Yes play Heart of the Sunrise. It's not meant for network television.--s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu, Damon Fibraio

I can say that I have heard charlie sing Metropolis. I have a bootleg called Consciously unreal that I am getting rid of, and listening to Charlie cover Metropolis is, well, frightening. He goes offkey a lot during the song, and it just didn't work. Picture Axle Rose from Guns and Roses singing To Live Forever, and you may come close to what I felt listening to that.

from what i can remember (which ain't much) John was using his MESA/Boogie TriAxis that was modified for bass frequencies. Given that, you could be right about the settings. it's been a while (2 weeks; sacrilage, i know; i repent ;) since i listened to tYJ, but i'd bet there's a bit o' chorus and a tad of distortion (yuk) in there too.
John's pictured with a 4 string Ernie Ball MusicMan bass in the liner art of WDADU. so possiblely he used it to record. ne one know for sure?

Hey Jammers,
Happy ACOS day! I found a store with an advance copy friday, but I didn't get it. For some reason I wanted to wait 'till tuesday to get a real one, and now I regret it. Or do I??
And now for something completely different ...
For you Over-21 guys and gals within range of Philadelphia, Hairball (Erotomania@aol.com) and I (dneff@maaco.com) came up with the idea of having our own little YtseCon or ACOS release party or something. It was really cool meeting THE Hairball a while back, and we think it would be worth our while to plan some sort of informal social gathering for us local ytsejammers, complete with adult beverages. Whaddya think?
Hey, if we go to a place with a DJ, maybe we can get him or her to play something from ACOS and grace all the fortunate patrons there with the sweet strains of our beloved Dream Theater. Imagine, converts by the hundreds! Maybe we should have it at the Four Seasons - HAA! get it? The Four Seasons, A Change Of Seasons? Oh, never mind, sorry.
Anybody interested, please drop me a line and let's see what we can arrange! Both of us are in the western 'burbs, if that means anything, and we sould do it before Hairball goes running off to Arizona, if that happens!
Later, - Dave Neff (dneff@maaco.com)

Hello everyone, it's BABS. This is a response to Jason who inquired about Alex Lifeson's solo work. I don't know this for a fact, but I suspect that something is in the works. I had been listening to Q107 out of Toronto (until I lost reception of it a couple weeks ago) and they kept advertising this big benefit concert going on (I believe it may have been the first week of October) and Alex Lifeson was one of the musicians playing at it. Can any Cannucks fill me in on this?
Thanks. -BABS

In Jam #958, Jason asked about the Lifeson solo album. There has been great discussion about it on the NMS (Rush equivalent to the Jam). It was originally slated for October, but now I think it got pushed back. Supposedly, Sebastian Bach (Skid Row) does something on it. My details are pretty sketchy, but, yes, it's coming.
There was no DT content in this post. If you have a problem with that, check out Damian Allis' post in #958. (It deserves a second reading.)

Oh crud, I just got #958 containing the party post I sent last Wednesday! Sorry for the repeat, our mail server's been acting kinda funny.
But since I'm here ... ;)
I saw Mind Control in a record store - for $60 (yes, sixty)!! Somebody please tell me they made a terrible mistake! What should it go for, really? (No, I didn't get it).
I finally got a chance to study my new Live In Tokyo video, that I got in a *different* store for $15.99. IMO, if you don't have it, get it! I also got the Lie and Silent Man singles ... whew, I think I'm turning into a DT junkie :D
To our Brazilian friend Jose (if you're still subscribed and haven't committed suicide) - I guess you learned your lesson. As soon as I saw that post, I said "Oh boy, he's gonna catch it!" Rush may not be my favorite band either, but I will readily proclaim to all the world, literally, that they are excellent musicians and I have a great deal of respect for them. Their newer stuff just doesn't push my buttons like DT does. That's all. Diplomacy, son!
To our Greek friend Damian - Quite a stinging rejoinder! And perhaps not undeserved - but may I humbly suggest that you spell Dream Theater with an e-r rather than an r-e before you get bolted too! I hope I'm not too late.
My goodness, many of us seem to be rather testy lately. Ok, let's all take a time out, close our eyes, take a deep breath ... hold it! . and release. There, that's better.
Anybody know if Al Balkiewicz is up and around yet, I hope?
This time tomorrow I'll be listening to ACOS <big grin> - Dave (dneff@maaco.com)

Anyone in Canada willing to dub me up a copy of SubConscious?
Hopefully in the Toronto area so I can just come pick it up instead of going through the mail.

Since someone asked about Alex Lifeson (?), the guitar player from Rush, putting out a solo album, I thought I'd confirm it. Over the summer I worked as an Intern in the West Coast division of Atlantic Records. I happened across a memo which listed up-comming project assignments for the publicists. Alex's name (not Rush's) was on the list. I have no idea when it's coming out though. Hope that clears things up. And about cover songs...I have always thought that if you're going to do a cover, make it your own. Otherwise, you run the risk of butchering the original. If someone wants to hear the song played note-for-note, go home and listen to the album. Thanks all.

3. Space-Dye Vest is my FAVORITE DT song. In fact, it's one of my FAVORITE songs by ANY band, ever. I can play it on the piano, almost as well as Kevin. Well, not quite. I put a lot of emotion into it, but Kevin's is better. I think it's one of the most under-rated songs I've ever heard - the song is just WONDERFUL!!! That song is the main reason I'm unhappy Kevin left - I want more songs like that! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You say you put a lot of emotion into it, but not as much as kevin, is a very odd statement considering (if you've read the FAQ and all), by the time kev was writing and SDV and recording it, he had lost most of his emotion for playing with DT..
On a side note, i think derek is great live! I saw him like 2 weeks after he joined, and he was amazing...a little dull to watch, and kinda stuck out like a sore thumb when it came to appearances, but still amazing... James
