I'll keep it short n sweet.
ACOS roolz! I love the new version and it's getting mega airplay on
both the car and home stereo.
I feel great to have been a part of the "voting" process which we on
ytsejam drove to get EastWest to fund this project!! I would like to
see someone drive a "thank you DT" project as a follow-up.
The cover tunez are novel, but my old band played the same stuff and I
think we did it better. Then again, DT plays the DT songs better than
we did! 8^)
Happy rails, ....

Time to delurk again...
Yesterday was the day.
Overall I'm very impressed. A few things I noticed: The intro is incredible.
I like how it starts mellow then suddenly... bam! The old opening riff is
now played only acoustically. The part where the piano plays over the heavy
riffs sounds really cool. The first vocal harmonies (innocence caressing me)
are haunting. Also the part where James first sings the line and then speaks
the line. Too cool. The swirling screams in the background are a nice
effect.
My biggest complaint is probably the part where it's just drums and keyboard
and Derek plays this jazzy-almost-circusy tune. (12:50ish) It just doesn't
fit, man! But I guess he "makes up" for it with the
kick-ass-almost-up-to-par-with-The-Kevin-Moore-in-my-opinion solo in the
Inevitable Summer. Nice indeed. And not to mention that HUGE sound right
before the keyboard solo. Effects like these, when used sparingly, can add
to the overall effect of a song.
Another cool thing to do is to listen to ACOS with the pitch a little higher
so it's sped up a little. Just like Subconscious, man! Yeah!
I didn't really care for the new unstructured, bluesy(for lack of a better
word) section right after Another World. I've noticed DT uses this style
more often nowadays. You know, where the other 3 instruments play the same
thing again and again underneath either a keyboard or guitar solo. They used
this style quite a lot on Awake, too. I definetly prefer the structured, I&W
style- The dual key/guitar harmonies, the intricate melodies, etc.. Also
the bellsy piano part at the end just keeps repeating and repeating. I'm not
used to this much repetition from DT. Again I'm just nitpicking an otherwise
killer tune.
They still rule.

Im listening to ACoS now and it just reached the major change at 18:35 which is
IMO the best part of the song. But up until this point I was dissappointed
with the keyboards but the solo that follows this change is amazing. I hope he
plays like this more often

First of all, I want to invite everyone to check out my home page for a
rendered image of the Majesty symbol. The URL (for those of you who skip
over my .sig) is <http://east.pima.edu/~tjensen/index.html>. Comments,
suggestions are welcome. Flames will be ignored.
Second, I and two of my friends went to the local Zip's Record Exchange
(on Speedway for those of you living here in Tucson) and bought the last
three copies of ACoS left yesterday. I must say, it is a masterpiece!
I'm listening to now for the fifth time and I still can't believe how
great it is. Words can't explain my awe!
Lastly, someone mentioned having trouble with DT Interactive on the
Windows platform. Someone else mentioned setting the video to an 8 or 4
bit graphics mode. He was right. I switched over to the generic VGA
driver and was able to run it.
Laters all!

I am a silent bystander on this list, but I just wanted to say ACOS is
INCREDIBLE! The whole album is great and I was ecstatic to hear COWS by ny
all time favorite group. I wish James would have sang. He could have done
justice to the vocals. The song ACOS is an extremely cohesive and enjoyable
piece. Kansas, Yes and DT are the only three bands that I have seen pull off
these lengthy pieces succesfully.

it doesn't look like a drawing to me. it looks like 2 separate photos

Hello all!
I'm going to assume that all of you have been as excited as I have
recently to get that adrenaline rush of buying a new Dream Theater CD. I
just got ACoS just like the rest of you and have a few random thoughts
about that and some other stuff.
* ACoS..........One word, Masterpiece!
* Derek's Playing- I have noticed one major difference (not necessarily
good/bad) is that Derek plays like a keyboardist, Kevin played in a style
that closely resembled a guitarist (not always, but most of the time). I
am still getting familiar with Derek's choice of synth voices but I'll get
used to it
* I agree totally with Michael Kizer. I feel we as the mentioned "online
Ytse-Jammers have an obligation to thank DT for not only releasing the
material for us but thanking us in the liner notes. Let me know Michael, I
support your motion.
* And Lastly, to the guy asking about the Mesa Boogie Tri-Axis preamp.
Yes, very cool unit, but there are also many other things to consider in a
tone like JP's. He is also using very expensive very excellent sounding
additional processing (i.e. Lexicon, T.C. Electronics). I personally use
the ADA MP-1 (which you can pick up for around $450 now that they
introduced the MP-2) (even cooler). I use the ADA with seven other rack
devices which I won't go into anymore detail about here (not the place)
but if ANY of you want to discuss theory, DT, or guitars/tones/effects
mail me. (sorry for the ramble, I work at a guitar/music store...It's my job)

Heh, ya wanna know how I found the Ytsejam? I was on
the Journey List-Server for a while. When Perry's album
"For The Love Of Strange Medicine" came out, I was among
the first (and one of the few) to rip it to shreds. It sucks.
Luckilly, I wasn't alone in this opinion - but, I kept talking
about how great DT was, so, someone finally got annoyed
enough with me to tell me how to subscribe to Ytsejam. =)
(and how to unsubscribe from the Journey list!)
Anyway, How I Got Into DT:
(Sorry if you've heard this before!)
I forget when this was (maybe sometime in the late
spring of '92), but, I was hanging out with my radio
partner. He slips me this tape, "Images & Words"
by Dream Theater, with the words: "Listen to this band:
They sound like Rush."
I popped it into the boom-box on the back seat, and
listened to it. I thought the first side was damn good.
Then, I put on Metropolis.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: That song nearly
caused me to get into an accident. =)
I told Mike this, to which he replied: "Driving while listening
to Metropolis should be illegal <laughter>...definitely
brain damage material."
Anyway, suffice it to say that I made it a personal mission
to convert everyone on this planet to DT fans. I did this
via playing at least one DT song from that album every
week for about a year. I also coerced my partner (who was
the metal director when the station had one) into reporting
DT in his top 5 for many months; phone interviews, playing
the death out of everything I could get my hands on...etc.
(For which Jim Pitulski thanked us. You wanna talk about
one of my proudest moments in life?)
So, here I am! =)
Oh, incidentally - as for those who were wondering about
how close to the original DT's version of "Lovin' Touchin'
Squeezin'" is? Well, it's damned close. I doubt Gregg
Rollie played the same piano fill every night...or Jon Cain.
And, Cruise Control is incredibly close to the original.
It should be pointed out, however, that as a veteran of
cover bands, I like it when musicians add their own flair
to things - the only guitar solos I bothered to learn were
"Crazy Train" (out of respect for Randy), and "Everything
About You" by UKJ...for no real good reason - it was just
so damned simple, why not? =)
Anyway, I don't care if everything's perfect - they're
covers. Have fun with 'em, I say. =)

Yes, he's still using the Tri-Axis.. I believe it's in the Mark IV lead
mode for rhythm... the sound also has a lot to do with David Prater's
production, he's very strong on guitar production.

You can get an ADA... it's not quite a Tri-Axis... but it probably is the
most similiar. That would be the ADA MP-1 with Mesa tone tubes.

I will wholeheartedly second this recommendation for this album. It's QUITE amazing...and the fact that it's live is even more astounding - there's not ONE note out of place. And Rod Morgenstein (yes, Winger's drummer) is COMPLETELY in his element here. His drum solo is actually interesting to listen to, compositionally speaking. And yes, Cruise Control is on that album. And there was one other one. I used it only in dire emergencies, because I don't think it's all that good - Manowar's "Triumph Of Steel..." whatever that first cut's called...it's around 29 minutes long...and boring. But, hey... =)

Wait a minute. You're going to the UofT Scarborough campus. I live in Scarborough as well - would this happen to be the Scarborough Town Center you're talking about? Because they happen to have 3 music stores there, and it sounds like you're talking about the same sales guy (although, I've seen DT albums in the other music stores there). Only, I walked into HMV first (I assumed Music World and SAMs wouldn't have it).

Hahaha... :) It MUST have been the STC you went to! If so, I was the FIRST of those 4 people. I walked in, asked him "Do you have 'A Change of Seasons' by Dream Theater? It was supposed to come out today...", and the guy seemed pretty uninterested and said "yeah, wait here" and went and unpacked the boxes, etc. He didn't say anything else, and had this disapproving look on his face. Maybe because it was like 10:00am and he thought I should've been in school or something...
$13.99? Where DID you buy it? The HMV I went to had it at $17.99. I didn't mind paying that, since I knew it was either that, or run all over the city looking for a copy. If you got it at the same HMV I did, I'm gonna go back and complain to them and ask for my 4 bucks. ;)
yt> What?! Hasn't anybody heard of Dream Theater before. I mean... yt> they only sold 4 ACoS CDs all day?! Oh well.
Well, don't forget, people that aren't on the 'net might have no idea what it is or that it was being released today. 4 CDs isn't THAT bad, I'm sure most of the CDs that aren't new-releases don't sell that many. It's not like it's a full-length album, so I suspect only the hardcore fans would buy it... -- |Fidonet: Lars Hellsten 1:250/320 |Internet: larsh@tor250.org

ok, i was thinking about how everyone, including me, thinks that ACoS (EP version) is slower than the Subcon or DoE or wutever version. thing is, the EP version is not slower. really. the truth is that the versions we're used to are FASTER than it was written to be. ie. live, things tend to get sped up. not rushed, just slightly faster than the album version. i know this happened with the shitty demo i played on 3 years ago.
course, DT *are* musical gods and they *never* speed things up/slow things down. *always* 100% accurate tempo and beats per minute.
then again....i'll shut up now. time to get rid of this old .sig too....

First, ACOS: I don't like a few of the changes, weakened lyrics, etc, and Derek doesn't seem to take as much of a role as Kevin (why did he have to change tastes? why? why? he was my favorite keyboardist and now he'll be making schlock. only 2.5 albums?? um, sorry about that), but overall I think it is a lost more atmospheric than the original, more moody. I got the other on tape which is okay I guess but I really wish it was at the START of the tape--easy rewind.
I would have loved I&W w/ ACOS instead of Another Day and Surrounded, but I like the Awake in the new version better, I think. Kevin's hammond-on-acid sound, real drums, Eroto in Sunrise, Scarred-similarity in Summer, and am I crazy when I say I hear Space Dye Vest's sound in the intro/outro?
I like the snare, mostly. If I get picky about it, it's not the best, but it's very similar to Tim Alexander's tight snare sound, which I love. So clear.
Now, the tale of a DT heretic. I'll preface this by saying that DT is my favorite band. ACOS is still my favorite song (as it was when I heard the bootlegged version), topping even "Knots" by Gentle Giant--the perfect short progressive song, BTW--and each of the individual musicians (minus vocalist) dominate their instruments.
Okay, I got I&W because I loved Queensryche and people on the net said if you liked QR you might like Fates Warning, and so I did, and then people said if you liked FW you just had to get DT. So I bought I&W from Columbia House. The first fifteen minutes or so were ecstacy (didn't have time to hate Another Day yet), but I started to notice that most of the songs seemed to wander. It really bugged me how the best parts, usually the bass parts found in the beginning of TTT, Metropolis, and LTL, were lost and forgotten in the rest of the song. I was used to QR who would keep the the dark parts strong (Mindcrime! ... sorry).
I almost sent the CD back. I had to fight, listen to it many many times, program over Surrounded and then AD, but I kept the disk on the strengths in TTT, Metropolis, and LTL, learning to lighten up a bit. It set the stage for me to become a progrock fan.
It was a struggle. Anyone else on the list begin by disliking DT?

Okay, the inevitable debate is already raging between my roomate and I:
Which part of ACOS is better, Sunrise or Sunset? I have to go with the latter. The combo of James' vocals and the throttling drums make my blood boil. I know Sunrise is at a disadvantage (or am I misjudging my fellow jammers?) since it has to vocals, but people like my roommate might overlook this. Sunrise really pumps you up, but it just doesn't have the emotion, IMHO, that Sunset does.
Also: does anybody know if Easter (the Marillion cover DT did for all of you non-freaks) is going to be released as a b-side to an upcoming single? I heard that the Perfect Strangers single in Europe is going to have the Dickinson b-side.
One last thing: was Caught in a Web ever released as a true single? My roommate has the promo single, with just an edit and album version, but I remember during the Awake show, James said announced before they played it that, "We have a new single out. It's called Caught in a Web. And it's a shitty place to be." I've never seen it, though.

HI again to all of you!
On ACOS: Is it just a production error or aare all the CD's back covers upsidedown in relation to the front? All the copies that I've seen are upside down...
The Bohemian Rhapsody Cover on ACOS is good... I like, even though I'm a Die- hard fan of Queen... Best version of a Queen song that wasn't done by Queen, IMHO...
On the Subcon Dub site issue: My stereo isn't that good but it should make a desent copy of subcon and if anyone is interested, I live in Europe, so...

Hi again,
Does anyone know exactly what the voice under James's 'whoa'ing from 9:48-10:08 is saying. I can pick up a little of it but not it all....
Also check out http://www.guitarworld.com/sep95/lessons/menu/le.menu.html It's the Guitar World Online Lesson page. It's got monthly lessons from John Petrucci with music, tab, and .wav files. Pretty cool.
lates,

P.S. as if i had to say... the times are from ACoS. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh come let us adore him, Abuse then ignore him. No matter what, don't let him be. Let's feed upon his misery, Then string him up for all the world to see.
