Okay, so the subject sounds like a book for pre-schoolers, but like
it says, this is my first post. I've been on the Ytsejam for a couple weeks
now, all I have to say everyone here is the coolest. Actually, maybe the
Jam is too good a thing, all I do now is sit around and read what all the
other DT fans have to say and listen to, well you know who.
A few things:
I have yet to hear anyone say anything about Bombay Vindaloo. What,
nobody likes it? Personally I consider this song nothing short of orgasmic
(musically). There really aren't words for how good this song is (maybe
un-fucking-believable!) And live no less! I don't know of many bands that
could do that in a studio, forget live. Had I been at that show I could
have died knowing my life was complete. (Course, it's not my favorite DT
song, I mean, who could choose one.)
A while back some guy said something about how Moore didn't have any
emotion when writing SDV. Who are you kidding!?! Listen to the song!
There's more emotion in there than most weddings and funerals! That song
rules! (enough ranting. Sorry if I misunderstood whoever made that comment
about SDV, I just need to emphasize the endless flow of feelings in that
song).
Even farther back someone mentioned wanting to see I Mother Earth
with Dream Theater instead of Fates Warning. This is Ironic, because I saw
DT at Berklee with IME in Oct 94. To be honest, they kind of sucked. They
told the audience to ignore the bouncer dudes in front of the stage and come
right up and dance with them. They played a song. Nobody moved. The
vocalists said he didn't think we could get past the bouncers anyway. They
played a song. Nobody moved. The vocalist called DT fans wusses (or
something like that) They played a song. Nobody moved. People clapped
every time they finished playing something becasue they thought they were
finally finished. Most of the DT fans seemd to be saying "get these clowns
off stage and get me DT NOW!" Finally IME finished. Sorry IME fans - they
weren't that bad, I really didn't give them a chance. IT's just that their
"we're bad asses" attitude really fell short of impressing me when all I
could think about was DT. Of course DT was awesome. Mike gave a "It all
began a few rooms over" speach, them being at Berklee where it all began and
such. So that's my story. I guess my point was I was really dissappointed
to get stuck with cheesy IME when I could have seen Fates Warning.
How many of the 900+ people here listen to Fates Warning, by the
way? How about Anacrusis, Savatage, or King's X? I've seen people asking
about Watchtower and would definitly like to know more myself. I'm
interested because of their name appearing in other prog metal band credits.
I remember looking up their album and discovering they were out of print....
Are the Majesty Demos worth getting if I really can't get into
WDADU? How are the vocals? (better than Charles I imagine) And what do
people think about Instru Mental?
Does anyone else ever encounter the "DT would rule if they were an
instrumental band" attitude? I've had a lot of people tell me this...
I guess that's it...
Nice to know there are other DT fans out there. Long live the revolution!

Wow ....
Just went through the 19,000 jams I have gotten in the past 24
hours or so. So let's see.
Don't remember anyone's names, so deal, it's past 1AM and I have had
a wicked long day.
ACoS - I definately like the new version. Some parts kind of get under
my skin, like that jazzy keyboard thing in there somewhere. I just
don't think it fits right. I wish the please don't go was still there,
but after reading some people's responses, I have to agree that it doesn't
fit 100% anymore. Acoustic Intro and the vocal harmonies are awesome.
I am now starting the Break John's Wah Pedal club. More info on my
web page soon :) I just think it sounded fine before and the wah doesn't
really add all that much and also kinda sounds stupid. I'm still pissed
that I gotta change my sig too =) I think that's it on this.
How I got in to DT: Well, I first bought WDADU in probably like 1990,
when my mom said to me that her friend, John Petrucci's (John's dad) son's
band had just released an album. I then proceeded to order it from, you
aren't gonna believe this, Columbia House :) At that point I was a
metalhead and a half (still kinda am) and didn't think it was all that
great. A few years later when I&W came out, I was hanging out with some
friends andone of the guys had the I&W, and I said, "Oh, Dream Theater
cam out with a new CD, how is it?" He said it ruled. So, I told my sis
to get it for my birthday and haven't stopped listening to it since :)
CD Store in Kings Park: He's probably talking about Mr. Cheapo's Records.
Not REALLY in Kings Park, in Smithtown technically. But close enough.
Kings Park ain't all that big. I know, I lived there for 18 years.
A letter to thank DT: Well, I could set up a mailform on my DT page, so
that people could just type something in and forward it to whomever
is organizing this, Mike something I think. If you want me to do this,
send me some mail and I will set it up.
Hmmmmm. I think that's all the replies to stuff on that end. Oh, one
more thing. Derek. He seems pretty good. As I mentioned, I don't like
that jazzy thing in ACoS, so I guess we'll have to wait until the spring
to find out how good he really is. I just loved Kevin. I guess I also
had kind of special attachment to him cuz I knew his parents. Knew John
P's too, but not as well as the Moores.
Last but definately not least. DT on the Net. I need this done soon,
so we can get it in the new FAQ (When are you planning on releasing it
Jason??? ) So, check the list below. If your site is on it, check

Someone (and I don't remember who) asked about good exercises to work on finger strength. Major scales work well, 'cause you get every finger working. Here's another one -
Start on the E, 1st fret. Then play A, 2nd fret, then D 3rd fret, then G 4th fret. Use (on left hand) index, then middle, then ring, then pinky. Then start on G 6th fret and come back down, pinky first, then ring... Keep going up the neck till about the 12th fret. Then come back down.
With both warmups, take it SLOW, and make sure that every note is clean. Gradually work up speed. It's best to do this with a metronome. No, I don't have one, either. This'll do the trick, and it only takes about 15 min. a day.
To strengthen your right hand, just keep playing. Whatever. Remember, the goal is to have every note ring cleanly. Pretty soon, you'll be playing Myung lines. OK, so it'll take a few years, but don't set that as your goal. Try to play REM lines, then Van Halen lines. If you sit down tomorrow and try to play DT or Rush stuff, you'll get discouraged and give up. The best covers to learn as a beginner - on almost every instrument - is the Beatles. You get strong, simple lines, and a subliminal lesson in theory as well. Happy practicing.
BTW, I figured I'd post this because a lot of you could probably use the advice. The same warmups over & over get boring, and then practicing becomes a chore. If you're not having fun, quit. Whatever it is - music, work, school - it's not worth it if you don't enjoy it.

I was thinking, what with the release of ACOS and all, that it would be cool for the band to start pushing its own live recordings via the fanclub and Ytsejam; they could choose a favorite performance and ensure high quality. Previously, there seemed to be concerns with some band members about boots; this would circumvent these by making it an "official release" kinda thing. I'd even like to see the band pull a profit on each disc/vid... if it was done on a large enough scale (>1,000), I can't believe that the end cost would be too high, and maybe the people making the copies could be paid also.
It almost seems like Acoustic Dreams is a test of sorts for this, but we could easily use a live disc from the Awake tour, plus the last few sets which included ACOS. These could be released at a rate of something like every 6 months to help the fans make it through the time between albums.
Any thoughts or further suggestions on this?
For what it's worth, Computer Shopper guesstimates that CD recorders will be < $1,000 by early 96, thus making it quite plausible for anyone to dub CD's within a few years (schools may have them available for students, even). I think the current price on the blanks are about $15...
ACOS: Those of you who have surround sound & other neato features of a high end stereo system, please tell us about any special things you hear on ACOS. I know someone complained about certain sounds bouncing back and forth, but maybe it's a "6:00 drum roll thing", and it really circles around you (which might sound real awesome).
Emotion in James-of-the-many-hands' (JOTMH) voice :^) I've heard a lot of complaints about how there's less emotion in JL's voice as compared with Subcon/DOE/Whatever, but I think that's not the case; the emotion is just different. Whereas previously it sounded angry/aggressive/freakin-out, now it seems more plaintive and lonely, esp on "Seize the day, I heard him say...". My opinion of the song goes up every time I listen to it. A true masterpiece.
I think the subtle keys throughout really add a lot; it seems more care was taken to create mood and effect than on anything they've done previously.
Ok, what's with DT and Fates' obsession with older men?? Is the guy on ACOS like drinking buddies with the guy on the Parallels and Perf Sym covers??! :^) "Beavis' Dad!"

I will post my comments on ACOS later, but what I see now is the large number of people who aren't content with getting the EP. Even BEFORE it was released someone asked for more. Please stoppit, and let this EP be IT until next summer. Too many releases tend to damage the overall quality, yeah I know WE would be happy if they released homevids of Mike having a burger or John P playing golf, but IMO bands should limit themselves to release material only which pushes forth their musical vision.
Therefore I'm not fond of these petitions: * lets tell them to release some more of the EP 'for us' * why don't they release it on video * i want them to do more uncovered shows where they play my songs
Sorry if it sounds like I'm slagging the people suggesting these things, I'm just against these types of ideas.
I DO agree that we could write to the band and tell how much we appreciate what they do, that's another thing.

If they did even more stuff like this, that would really be selling out to their usual crowd, just doing what 'we' want, ie doing long epic things with lots of complexity (don't get me wrong, I like it!!!). I'm not saying they should go for a grunge-album, but whatever they want to challenge me with I will try to digest ;-)

I first got into DT way back in 1989. I picked up WDaDU on a whim while Christmas shopping with my mother. Needless to say I was blown away by it. I listened to it on and off for the next three years often wondering "What happened to that band"? Well fast forward to the summer of 1992 where I was at a local metal bar. It was one of those nights where there was no one else at the bar other than some bands and their girlfriends when I heard the most incredible music over the PA. About two or three minutes into Metropiolis it occured to me who it was. Confirmed it with the DJ and waited till the next morning when I could get my new copy of I&W. Now it was time to see them in concert. They appeared at Harpo's in October. Saw 'em for 5 bucks and was blown away to say the least. It was kind of neat to see all the other fans crowding the stage as all the hair farmers left. There were about 75 other fans there. Well the great part about it is that the next day was when I hear PMU on ZROCK so the next time DT was in town Harpo's was sold out for this "new band".

Doesn't the true measure of DT's success exist in the quality of what they produce? Sure, it's great to wonder what it would be like if everyone would give things the respect they deserve, but I feel DT's reward should come from creating something that actually pushes the envelope on what it means to be human. Sounds a bit over the top, but I don't think it's an exaggeration. There are a million oh-I-think-I'll-shave-my-head-and-be-like-everyone-else college bands out there that rack up more sales than DT ever will, but they will never have what DT has. I'm into running a lot, and I've logged in countless miles that were effortless because I was floating on the art of Dream Theater. Anyone who can create something with the power to do that is well on there way to self-actualization; that's success. Anyway, enough on that for now.

If you really want to get your weak hand chops up, do it the easy way. Stop using you're strong hand! Open the door with your weaker hand. Move the mouse. Open books. Everything you can SAFELY do with the other hand, do. It's a very common practice among many of the best drummers (Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Terry Bozzio, etc.). If you're really gutsy, try writing with your other hand. Not just stupid little messages. Seriously try working on making your handwriting just as good on both hands. It'll take a half-hour or so of practice a day. The results to your playing, however, will make you glad you spend the extra effort (not to mention, you can seriously flip people out by switching hands with your pen in the middle of class).

I don't know how many people out there know the basic story behind Space Dye Vest, but I'll share what I know about it. I forget exactly where I got this from, but it was an explanation by Kevin. He said he was looking through this catalog and saw this beautiful girl wearing something called a space dye vest. He immediately began obsessing over her, with no previous knowledge of who she was. He took the story from there. "beauty projection in the reflection always the worst way to start." He takes the story from there and carries on a basic scenario based on a relationship that starts that way. Again, this is my recollection of an article I read. Don't stone me if I missed something. If anyone has a more specific explplanation, I'd be interested.

Just want to add my thanks to the band for putting out this disk. Not to press my luck, but wouldn't it be great if they adopted a policy sort of like what Fish does of putting out "official bootlegs" every nine months or so. Too bad nothing too terribly great seems to be coming from the Fish camp.
On another subject, many people, including meeself, seem to have trouble getting a pulse out of the DT fan club. With tired eyes, I scanned the liner notes of ACOS last night and couldn't find any mention of the fan club. Did I overlook it (geez, I hope not) ?? Are they punting the fan club ?? It seems odd that it was missing.
