Hi, I have been lurking around since oh January..and now my first post!
ANyway..I am here in the middle of Indiana....where this is absolutely nothing.
I have met a few other people here interested in DT but not many. Anyway I
have been waiting for ACoS for a while and there has been NO mention at any
of the stores here....even though one guy at a chain store here knows they get a
couple DT disks in every now and then....anyway last tuesday I was reading
our school's paper..and here is this ad with ACoS in huge letters. I thought
that was so cool!....Just thought I would share. Anyway I picked it up for
7.99 on CD (well worth the money). Oh btw I am impressed with Derek's keys
on the covers....and I am very impressed with ACoS...much more than on the
boots. Well enough rambling......thats all..thanks for listening.

    Jeremy

btw Anyone else like that sticker on the shrink wrap that said:
"Featuring their legendary 23 minute rock (i forgot the rest) song"

Hi, Jammers! This is my first time, writing, so here goes. ACoS came out
on Tues, as you all know. However, on Thursday, I got a Treat...I met
Mike Portnoy!! He did a clinic at Waddell's drum shop in Pittsburgh.
Simply outstanding!! Mike is , without a doubt, the most down to Earth
celeb musician that I have ever met. After talking to him, I got the
greatest feeling about music, and my playing. Mike also asked me to pass
on a message to fellow Jammers: in about a month, he starts his clinics
again, and would appreciate it if a fellow jammer could print up about a
month's worth of material for him. I hope someone obliges. GO TO THE
CLINIC!!! It's an experience you won't forget.

                            bye-bye...Mike Drozdibob

another name, something really odd like Alberts shorts or something, I
can't remember. I never found Chris' solo album, but I read great reviews on
it (4 of 5 stars from Guitar world)

According to Yes, Tony and Trevor are "gone" and Howe and Wakeman are
back. Check out the recent issues of Notes From the Edge (the Yes
mailing list) for more info directly from the band on this.

PS. Tony is now in management due to an RSI of some sort and Trev
is considering what is reportedly a Supertramp reformation.

    _the_pipeline_ <sdh9b@uva.pcmail.virginia.edu> wrote his DT too-much-success story.

I think a best case scenario for DT success would be to become Rush. Selling out auditoriums and millions of loyal fans, but never becoming radio stars. Frankly, I think this WILL happen to DT. Their fans are too loyal and their musicianship is too good. I've heard other prog bands but DT semms to be the most successful. It'll take some time but I think they'll do it. Queensryche did it pretty much. I'm not a big QR fan but they're playing auditoriums now and songs from they're albums get a little rotation when the album is released (like Rush).

    -------------

    > What was the problem with Rush's Signals? I think it > sounds great, except for the guitar/keyboard war throughout > the album. I think Signals sounds pretty good though. What > am I missing?

I'm not entirely sure. I always thought it sounded great too (I love that album) but someone said something about it not being mixed well. Some production thing. If you listen to it then another album that's produced better, Signals doesn't sound that great. That's all. I don't even remember. LIke I said, those things go right by me.

    Hi, jammers.

In Tokyo "A room with a view(as you know the source of SDV's sampling part)" has been screened till today. So I went to see the movie. Although in the very small theater having a seating capacity of only about 80, the place was neat and clean.

The length of the film was a little longer than 2 hour. It was the love story showing a feelings of a woman confusing between two types of men. As might be the not uncommon story, the story line was cool on the whole and the image was beautiful.

The sampling part appears in the latter half of the film distinctly. I think probably everyone who listend to SDV can make out where it is. The scene is that Emerson(who is loving Lucy but she had already accepted another man's proposal) is trying to persuade Lucy of his true love. There is no BGM and no noise, so it seems suitable to be sampled and used at the other place.

After seeing that scene I was left with one question. I fancy that there was some speech between "I want you to have your own thoughts and ideas and feelings, even when I hold you in my arms." and "It's our last chance." Does anyone confirm it?

My CD player has the ability to recognize "Indexes" within songs. Indexes are popular with classical music because they're perfect for placing between movements. Although I had expected to see Indexes in ACoS, to my dismay they aren't there. They should definitely have been included.

For informational purposes: My copy of 2112 has indexes but Hemispheres does not.

First off, I would like to say, that I have been hooked up to ytsejam for about two weeks, this being the first time I've actually sent anything. This is just about the absolute smooooothest-ass hookup in the world.

Second off, I wanted to tell the guy who signed off with the SDV quote- "there's nowhere to set my aim, so I'm every- where"-Kevin Moore. Except his was all jumbled up, as with "no aim". Dude that was pretty cool.

Well, now that I've written in with some stupid stuff, maybe I can start asking questions and sending info of my own. While I'm at it, has anyone heard of a band called Scaterd- Few ? If not, check 'em out. They're not DT-like, but they are still a great band. They have two albums out- "Sin Disease" and "Jawboneofanass". Check 'em out!

    See you next time, Ryan {RA5123@cub.uca.edu}

I don't remember how, but one day I got a big list of reviews of progressive bands. Somehow I came across it on the net. (Was it on the Ytsejam last year maybe?) Anyway, one of the most intruguing bands on it was Watchtower. So one day I saw "Control and Resistance" for sale at a local used CD store for $5.99, so I thought, "What the heck?"

Well, these guys are insane. This is not a compliment. =)

Musically, these guys are MORE complicated than Dream Theater. I'll say this again. Hands down, these guys are MORE technical and complicated than Dream Theater! I don't know how they do it, but it seems that there are no two measures in C & R that are counted the same! (I'm sure there are, but VERY FEW!) Every song is intensely fast and just painful to listen to! Dream Theater has songwriting ability. Watchtower just seems to play ANYTHING that sounds different! It's like they hated every music teacher they ever had. I'm not saying that they're terrible musicians or anything (you just HAVE to be good to pull this stuff off!) but maybe I'm just not into their song-writing style. They form NO patterns in their songs at all. None of the lyrics rhyme, the guitar solos don't seem to make any sense (Kind of like the guitarist from Living Color. This is just my opinion of course...) and the songs were almost painful to hear.

I think this has to do with the vocalist. He's a screamer, that's for sure. Remember when you first heard Megadeth? It's like, "Who the hell is this dweeb?" After a while you get used to Dave's voice. I'm not comparing Dave's voice to Watchtower's singer, but I'm just saying that they're going to lose a LOT of fans because of their singer, I think. He's kind of annoying.

Here's an example. The other day I was cranking Tool's "Undertow" in my dorm for a full hour. (Just so you know, Maynard James Keenan of Tool is an INCREDIBLE singer!) Nobody complained. Then I put in Watchtower's "Control and Resistance" at the same volume. After the second song, my RA knocked on my door and wrote me up for having my music too loud! I don't think it was too loud - I just had the wrong group in I guess. =)

Watchtower is a very pissed off band. Kind of like Rage Against the Machine. (One HELL of a band! Just ditch the singer/rapper! =) They talk about how fucked up society is and all that old rehash. *sigh*

So basically, if you want to have a listen to a band that is more challenging musically to listen to than Dream Theater, then give them a listen. I just think that they're a very young bunch of pissed off virtuosos that just need to age a little until they're ready to settle down and concentrate less on pissing off their music-teachers and more on writing things that make musical sense.

If you're going to write to me telling me that this is only a forum for talk about Dream Theater, then tough shit! I've also heard that this is simply a forum for talk about Dream Theater and DT-related subjects. So don't bother flaming me. Just hit Return and be thankful this isn't another "ACoS Rules, man!" post. =)

I'm done ranting. If you want a dub of Watchtower, I can do it for you if you're interested. I think I'll keep it for now though, because they might grow on me or something. Who knows?

    K, bye!

    Hello Jammers,

Digests ------- I have just spent 2 hours mostly reading about DT! Pretty wild, and I was planning on going to an Iluvatar album release party, if the CDs came in I wouldn't be having all this fun!! <grin> Actually the quality of postings has gone up over the last week. Thanks guys.

Lie CD Single ------------- I still need info on the Lie CD single for the Discography. BTW If anybody has an extra or unwanted copy of this, or can get a copy, mail me, I am interested in working something out with you.

    mbacko1@umbc.edu is the address

Thanks to John Jens and Keith Aspinall for information on the Silent Man single and CiAW promo respectively.

Requests for albums ------------------- I think we should stick with the thank you notes right now and we'll work on them later in the year. <grin> Actually I think it would be a great idea for them to release a live CD with each studio album, this really curbs the bootleg traffic (on CDs that is, I feel better giving $15 to the band for a live CD than $25 to a bootlegger... Threshold Psychedelicatessian is an awesome album that DT fans should try. Great double guitar with a great deal of crunch and excellent keys. They did open for DT in Europe last summer.

Saga Generation 13 I just bought this yesterday. A brilliant concept album that sounds like a combination of MArillion's Brave, Rush, and DT. They have Hogarth's vocal style, DTish guitar and Marillionesque keys. Wild ride, this album is.

I don't see why everyone's saying that the new ACOS is inferior to the Subconscious version (actually the DOE version, heh)... it's an order of magnitude better. I've listened (and DON'T have a copy of, so don't ask) to the original version that was recorded during the Images & Words sessions, and it's a lot closer to the new ACOS than the Sub one. I think the only reason for this particular thread of criticism is because people are _used_ to the Subcon version. Wait till you guys get the new CD after WDATU... it will contain the Cintron version of ACOS, which is a strange hybrid of all the others.

Interestingly, Images And Words was originally going to contain ACOS, To Live Forever, and Don't Look Past Me. Can you imagine an album THAT long... studio?!?!

So far, it's Forgotten Lore and Antiquities tied for the lead, with Darkest Years in second, and Lost Artifacts third...

Well, I have to admit that my way of getting into DT was a bit strange as well, (ahem...confession time ;)...since it happened while I was actually making out with a guy one night. :)

I was hearing a lot about them but never hear the actual songs. One evening, some time in Oct 1992, I was visiting a friend of mine, he had his radio on the local hard rock station. The things between my friend and I got a bit out of hand...*chuckle*...but my hearing sense was still sharp enough to hear the interview with Dream Theater!!! It turned out, they were in town that night, playing a sold-out show. They played Pull Me Under, Another Day and Learing To Live on the radio that night...after hearing LTL I was in love with that band! I knew that next morning I have to run to the record store and get I&W! It was such a huge revelation for me that I lost interest in my excitable friend, who was completely puzzled and really frustrated with me, but that was the least of my concerns. :)

Oh well, quite personal story there but I thought it was amusing.

Everyone has been writing, talking about how they discovered and got into Dream Theater. For me, the answer is simple: my best friend, and DT nut Geo Bast.

Actually, ACOS is about as long as 2112 from Rush, or Caress of Steel, or Hemispheres, or Close to the Edge from Yes. A full length album from the 70s was about that long. The reason being because people had to fit songs onto the vinyl records. The longer the song, the worse the quAlity towards the end of the records. I'm glad vinyl is dead. By todays standards, ACOS is an E.P. But 20 years ago, it would be an L.P.

    Hi jammers!

I have been paying attention to this acos review that has been going on and I have to respond to the piccolo snare thing.

First of all, I like it. I would not attempt to proclaim myself anywhere near an expert on this subject but being a drummer I do have some knowledge when it comes down to hardware. Ok, I think that one thing has been overlooked in the whole debate over Mike's decision to use a pic snare on acos - precision. The basic structure of the piccolo snare lends itsself to a tighter control over the instrument, this is very usefull when playing difficult rudimental passages (i.e. listen to Pearts drum solo..). With this is the added difficulty of playing CLEAN. The crisp nature also shows off your faults MUCH more redily then the typical fat snares most rock drummers use.

Finally, if you listen to Mike's style, and in particular to how he uses the upper toms, the tight snare sound fits right in. Anyway this is just my personal view on the whole thing so try not to flame too bad ;).

By the way, very much thanks to the guys in DT!!! ACOS is incredible!

    Escher

Hey all! You obsolutely positively won't believe what I just heard. I was (am) watching _Close Encounters Of The Third Kind_ on TNT right now and this commercial came on. All of a sudden I hear drums that sound very familiar. It turns out to be "Metropolis", and I narrowed down the excerpt to 5:11 to 5:36. The commercial was for Baxter Frame company (or something like that). I am not sure if the commercial is local (I think it is...the picture was grainy and the sound quality was poor...typical local cable commercial). It was just so weird. I was kinda falling asleep on the floor and I could hear my sister try to explain to my dad exactly who Elizabeth Berkeley is (you know...Jesse Spano from "Saved By The Bell" who is now parading around stark naked on the big screen as Nomi in _Showgirls_), and all of a sudden this commercial comes on and I practically jumped up off the floor. Hmmm...maybe people will start to wonder what "that awesome song is from the Baxter Frame commercial." The guy who made has got to be a big DT fan...I wonder if he is reading this right now. If you are, WAY TO GO!!!

Hi again, kiddies. A couple of things- 1) YKYAADTFW = You know you are a DT fan when... 2) Damian - I never thought of using my left hand for door knobs, opening beer cans, etc. I'm gonna try it. 3) The new Ozzy song is on the radio right now. Ecch. He should have quit while he was ahead. Wait! He did! Well, he should have meant it. 4) Trevor Rabin, Tony Kaye, and Alan White don't suck. They just can't play Yes songs. I don't know why they insist on trying. Ever hear them do Heart of the Sunrise? Oh, it's awful. White just doesn't have that Bill Bruford subtlety. (Squire kicks ass, BTW. He could probably kick my ass in Doom, that's how cool he is!) 5) The Subcon/DoE version of ACos is DEAD! Mike & co. decided to bury it. Obviously, they like the new version better, or they wouldn't have kept the changes. Let it die a noble death. I don't care what you prefer - that's your own opinion, and nobody can say your opinion is stupid or whatever. But DT wants to play the new version. The old version is dead. Let it stay that way. 6) I've only been in Burlington for a month or so, but I love it here and just might stay. Anyway, there's one very famous band that came from Burlington. They spell their name PHISH. FISH is the guy from Barney Miller. (That's about as irritating as Dream Theatre.)

Oh, go ahead, if it'll make you happy. I'll put on my asbestos leisure suit. What do I have to do other than read my e-mail, anyway? (Well, I could study... nah.)

    Let me add my review...

First, I think it's great to have something new to listen to. The fact that it's so long is a bonus; it's like having seven songs instead of one.

I think it's very easy to say that ACOS is a great tune(s) but I was hoping for a little more structure. I think at times it gets a little too choppy, and deviates from any central musical idea. The big individual sections don't really fit well together, although they are great individually. I had hoped that, after all the intercontextuality and interweaving present on Awake, there would be perhaps more of a cohesion. By the time the song(?) ends and the acoustic introduction material comes back, there's not much of a link to the beginning: we haven't heard that theme since early on, and it then becomes just another section of a song(?) that, dare say, almost has too many already.

The re-worked sections are easy to spot and I think I like those the best. The Erotomania in 17/4 part is very clever and I'm glad they added all the low-B heavyiness (at least I don't think JP was playing a 7-string back then...) The rest (especially the fast scalely-stuff towards the end) smacks a little too much of the WDADU days, which tend to suffer from a certain lack of subtlety. I guess the uniting factor in the song(?) is the lyrical content, but I haven't been able to figure its meaning yet (I'm no English major).

Production-wise, however, I think it's great. It's a very powerful mix and really well done (I do think that the HUGE train-like thingy should have faded out later than it does). Mike's snare does stick out though. It's an ok sound for some of the parts (I'm thinking of the 11/4 after the classical guitar section) but I think I prefer the thicker, sampled(?) snare of I&W, etc in other parts. Not a big deal though.

As for the covers, well, they don't do anything for me. The arrangement of the Big Medley was very cool, but they're just average songs. I would've rather heard more DT instead. Oh yea, the Perfect Strangers song sounds like Iron Maiden (especially the instrumental 9/4 stuff).

Anyway, I think I like ACOS (I have to let the novelty wear off). It does suffer from an amount of choppiness and overall "bigness" though. On the whole however, I'm glad it's here.

    Later, Glenn P.
