Well I have been on the Jam for a couple of months now, in lurker mode, but
now it's time to tkae keyboard in hand and dash off an post to the jam.

First of all, on ACOS, I thought it was amazing. I've been waiting for DT
to do a _really_ long song and was not disappointed in the least. Most of
what I thought has been re-hashed on the list so I won't bother to say
"ditto" to those I agreed with, nor flame those I disagree with. One thing
however, James' vocals. I was a little disappointed with _Awake_, primarily
because of the change in vocal style. The first thing that attracted me to
DT was the heavy, but still quite melodic music and James' sweet, clear
vocals. The contrast was what was appealing. So imagine my chagrin when I
bought _Awake_ and he is simply screaming from beginning to end of each
    song. (O.K., I know that's a too-broad generalization. It's a space thing.)
I was very pleased when I bought ACOS to find the he had merged the two
styles, quite well actually. Clear and melodic in places, more forceful and
    raw in others. Great.

Just a quick aside to Jerry George NDTC,

Absolutely right on Saga. I've been a fan for 12 years and have all the
    albums. While I did like Generation 13, I thought "A beginner's guide..."
    is their best recent release.

Those of you who haven't checked them out, I think you'll like them.

    Enough for now.

    Peace

         * they are great, keep 'em coming!

I will now begin accepting personal messages to be included in the
thank you letter that we will send to DT for putting out ACOS (and for
thanking us in the liner notes :).. So go ahead and type up your
message to DT and send them to ME PERSONALLY (not the list), I will
compile all of them into a booklet format, print them and send them to
DT's management (more details as I get close to finishing it). Send
         your submissions to:
            mrkizer@ccgate.hac.com
put 'DTTYL' in the subject so I don't miss your email

and include your name, city, state, country and email address...

I would like to put a deadline on this for submissions, let's say

            Hello jammers.

I recently subscribed to ytsejam (well, yesterday in fact) and until
about an hour ago I didn't really know what it was. I have yet to
physically meet a fellow Dream Theater fan, so I have no one to talk to
about it. Mostly when I mention them people look at me funny and say
,"Who?". I've been listening to DT for only a couple of months now but they
have taken over the esteemed status of: My Favorite Band.
I can't say which album I prefer (Awake or I&W). They both equally rock.
On I&W one of my favorite parts are the jam session in the middle of Take
the Time. Also I really like the middle section of Metropolis Pt. 1. The
part in Learning to Live where it gets soft and there's that acoustic guitar
    solo.
On Awake I enjoy the drum solo/intro on 6:00. All of Voices is
great, and it's hard not to like The Silent Man. The Mirror is really cool
in how Mike Portnoy changes the drum pattern over the steady guitar/bass
riff. Lifting Shadows Off a Dream and Scarred get better every time I
listen to them. I have to disagree, though, with those who dislike
Space-Dye Vest. No matter what Kevin Moore meant by it, it is still a
beautiful and emotional song. By the way, that and Wait For Sleep make a
    great medley on the piano.
I picked up a copy of A Change of Seasons yesterday and am listening
to it for the third time as I type this. It's a masterpiece, that's for
sure. I have never heard any of the bootleg versions of it, so I have no
changes to complain about. The tinny snare sound was a little annoying at
first, but nothing that trivial could ruin a song this great.
            Well, I'll shut up now.

            Sorry for talking so much.
                                    See ya.

                                            Ben Laussade

Okay, I'm sorry I said that Phish sucks. But they do.

Also, I have to admit that Fish's material has severely decreased in
quality since Internal Exile and Marillion. And he does have an awful
habit of rereleasing released material which was previously rereleased
    as rereleases.

But that does not make it right for someone to compare him to a Barney
Miller character. Comparing him to a Barney character, on the other
hand, would probably be okay. Someone like Michael, that little goofy
kid that hugs Barney as if Barney was his own skanky mother.

Okay, this is the official end of the Fish thread.

I have been trying to find the Lie CD single and have not been having any
luck. I was wandering if anyone in the Dallas or even Texas area might know
where I could find one. If anyone out there has an extra copy or can get a
hold of one, I would like to make them an offer for it. I have an extra
copy of WDADU as well as the Silent man single if any one is interested in a
    trade.

How I got started with Dream Theater ....

As much as it pains me to say it, I first heard and saw DT on MTV (I didn't
know that the M stood for RAP) on the old Headbanger's ball. I had just
read a concert review about DT in the local Dallas paper which called them a
cross between Rush and Metallica. This got me interested, and when I heard
them I was hooked. Currently DT is my second favorite band of all time
behind Rush. Iron Maiden pulls up the rear as number three.

I know that ACOS & AD are the mainstay of current topics, but I feel
obliged to give the answers to my last set of trivia. If anyone out there
is interested in more, just say so, otherwise I'll probably desist for a
bit and stay more in lurker mode until I get my new Email address at my new
job. I'm way behind in reading the JAM, so please forgive me if some of
    these are already answered.

..Someone suggested an even closer tie betweeen Yes & West Side Story: I
don't know, but would appreciate the info.

Thanks for those who posted the info. Its just that I haven't had the $$ to
get any of the boxed sets yet.

What band did Rick Wakeman play with before Yes? What was the complete
original name of that band? Which short-term member of this band also made
a guest appearance on which Led Zepplin song? What band was this person
    most closely associated with?

RW played with the Strawbs. The original name for the band was 'The
Strawberry Hill Boys'; blue-grass-type music was in vogue in England at the
band's inception, and showed up later in some of their pieces, although
progessive is the best description for what the band became. Someone asked
about the titles of the albums on which RW appeared with the Strawbs: I
don't have them in front of me, but the first was '..Collection of Curios
and Antiques' and the second was ..Witchwood' or something similar. Sandy
Denny, who did the fem vocal on Zep's 'Battle of Evermore Forest' was a
short-time member of the Strawbs, later with 'The Fairport Convention'

    >>>New Yes Trivia question: Which band did Tony Kaye, original Yes' keys,
    >>>go to after he left Yes? With whom did he later record a
    >>>'Christmas'-season song?

Tony Kaye formed the band 'Badger', after leaving Yes; the well-known Yes
(etc.) album cover artist Roger Dean also did a Badger album cover. Forget
the 2nd part, my memory betrayed me: Chris Squire & Alan White did a
Christmas single with 'Return of the Fox' and 'Running with the Fox'

    >>>>>>>Since no one has yet answered this question, I will leave it as a
    >>>>>>>continuing/new triva question:

Which other well-known rockband (not necess. prog) also plays(played) a
piece based on the Broadway musical 'Westside Story?' (hint the original
composer's name was included in the song credits; new hint, the front man
for this band was also a guest on the 'Muppet Show'; another hint, Vincent
Price did some narration for an album video by this band.)

Yes, Derek was a member of Alice Copper's band in 'Wayne's World'

..Thanks to those who posted the answers to this question.

As to the 'crunchy Hammond organ sounds' on ACOS & some of the covers:

That crunchy sound is what make/made Hammond organs the mainstay axe for
many of the original progessive/metal key gods: Keith Emerson, Rick
Wakeman, Rod Argent, Patrick Moraz, Jon Lord, Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep),
etc. The sound is/was a result of the tube electronics, real spring
reverb/tremolo (sp?) and the infamous mechanical Leslie speaker cabinets.

However, I would venture that the 'Hammond Organ' used on ACOS was really a
sound from an electronic keyboard emulator/sampler; IMHO, even with the
crunchy sound its seems a bit too 'clean' if you would compare it to
recording by the keymen mentioned above. Even KE toured with an electronic
keyboard emulator/ sampler in place of his Hammonds for a number of years,
although he has had his Hammonds refurbished for use on ELP's more recent
    tours.

BTW, Did Kevin, or does Derek, actually use a Hammond on any DT recordings/
tours? I haven't heard/found WDADU (yet, someone willing to dub me a
copy?)), and the only place on IAW or Awake where I can clearly recall
hearing a Hammond-like sound is the key part underlying the opening vocals
    on UAGM.

If you wnat to hear that 'real-crunchy Hammond sound' check out Jon Lord's
keys on the early-mid 70's Deep Purple albums (also the original Perfect
Strangers) and Ken Hensley's stuff from the same era with Uriah Heep (a
    very Deep Purple-
type band, if you've never heard of them before; Roger Dean also did some
of their album covers as well.)

Well so much ranting and raving for now.

Hi. I am looking to trade tapes with someone who might
have a recording of one or more of the shows that DT did
that included the new ACOS, Acoustic wait for sleep, LtL, etc .

I have a good sized collection of live/rare/demo dt stuff,
as well as tons of stuff from other bands to trade in return.

Please email me if you want to trade.

I just heard from the managment that Tom (the bass player) has left
echolyn. I don't know the details but I would guess that he was sick
and tired of getting fucked by Sony. Echolyn isn't making ANY dough at
all. They are all work part-time or even full-time jobs. Ray works
at a freakin' car wash! The had a deal with another record company
(I forget the name) to be on the Genisis tribute album but Sony stepped
in and wouldn't allow them to be on it. That probably cost echolyn
a fair amount of money right there.

I wish there was some way we could help them out. Lets all go out and
buy 5 or 6 more copies of As The World!!!

[SKIP THE FOLLOWING UNLESS YOU'RE *REALLY* BORED (I know I am)]

..Soooo, on my weekly weekend retreat from the Bay Area, I was driving up to the mountains to hang with my friends (all DT fans, of course), and as I was heading out of the biggest town in the county (no more than 3K pop.), I started driving past a hitch-hiker. It was almost midnight, and the dude looked pretty gnarly, but I rarely pass up a chance to help someone, notwithstanding the fact that I'm a little insane anyway. So, tossing the loose CDs in the back, I let the (drunk, btw) hitcher climb in (funny, I neglected to unclip my Spyderco Police Special (very mean knife) and hide it between my legs as I usually do, jic... but my instincts are pretty good). After he told me that he was going home from the bar since he popped some guy who was hitting, he thought, on his wife (his wife stayed there), I lit a smoke and turned up ACOS, but not too loud, and headed up the hill.

With Perfect Strangers playing in the background, the dude started getting very excited, "Wow! I love this shit! Is this Maiden, it sure sounds like it." -No, it's actually "Perfect Strangers" by Deep Purple (what's the use of saying it was DT since it's usually a waste of time).- So I argued, kindly, with him for a minute. The song was soon over, and I put it on the 'Zep' medly (he told me he was 34). He loved it too! I couldn't believe it, though not as much as PS, so I figured he was more into progressive rock.

Eight miles and the next town later, I said I was stopping at the store to get some beer before I headed up to my friend's house. "Cool, dude, I'll drink a beer with you!" <okay, how'm I going to get rid of the guy>. He went in with me and I headed out first, hoping he wouldn't follow. No such luck. "Dude, let's go drink a beer, give me a ride up the road another 1/2 mile." <insert discarded ACOS lyric here>. So, I stopped a block down to use the payphone. He bummed a beer off me and begged me to keep the stereo turned up (while I watched 2 sheriffs pass on the highway).

I got back to the car and he had accidentally skipped the CD to FFAF/LLB, so I skipped it to ACOS. Well, when the acoustic intro started, he started freaking out and was spewing all sorts of interesting explicatives about "...how much he loved this shit." So we listened for a time while I prodded him to finish his beer and we drove a few more blocks to drop him off "at my mom's" house. When we got there, I shut off the engine and the lights and I figured -what the hell?- and twisted one off myself. We listened for a while and he said the singer really good, so I finally told him that it was Dream Theater. "No way! I bought their first album!" <yeah, right>. So I pulled my CD case up front and showed him my collection (yes, I carry most of it with me). I showed him Awake, "Wow!" (but not that much of a reaction). I showed him IAW, "[the same reaction]. Then I pulled out WDADU and he said "Yeah, that's it!" <Ha! the drunk bastard *wasn't* lying> After I promoted the new EP, we parted ways (I wasn't going to drink more than 1 beer and drive). He did manage to bum another beer from me even though I told him I wasn't going to give him another, but he started arguing and discretion _is_ the better part of valor !>)>, even if, when I go to the mountains, I carry about what the mariachi in _Desparado _ carries in his guitar case in my trunk. (well, at *least* what he had up his sleeves)

He did want to give me a buck for that beer, but I'm not that cheap.

I'm sorry that this may look wacky on the screen. I typed it up off-line and uploaded it but the formats must have been different. I even tried changes margins and stuff but that didn't help much. It still looks better than I the 1st time I uploaded it....

    ------

The only way to get all (atleast most) of my thoughts down on the new version of ACOS was to sit and listen to it and go through it making notes at various clock times. So I'll give you a minute to hop over to your cd player and pop it in. (Hmmm.... although I guess some of you have it tape... uhhhh... get your stop watches out. )

I wish I would have posted this 2 weeks ago when I got my copy cause then it would have been cool cause not many had copies of it yet but now most people have posted reviews so I look like I'm churning up the same old stuff....

Anything that doesn't have a specific time next to it is just a general comment not related to a specific moment on the disc.

00:00 The acoustic guitar is really dark and sinister. I love it!! Great intro.

I'm very happy with the overall production. It's alot tighter like I & W's but still has a good amount of "space" like Awake did.

04:27 Ok, James is here too. I'm glad he went back to the I & W's style of vocals. I prefer it over the rough vocals on Awake. It's a relief to hear that he still has his voice. I thought he'd blown his vocal chords after hearing some of the Awake boots. :) 05:01 These harmonies are really awesome!!! It the James LaBrie Choir!!

I like the sound of Mikes snare drum but I don't think it fits in the song. It would be great for Pearl Jam or Dave Mathews Band or something but for the heavyness of ACOS I think it should be big , fat and deep, not like a coffee can.

08:28 I'm glad they didn't leave out the "We can hope for the future...." part. I missed it in the live versions.

Wow!! The let John Myung into the studio this time, as apposed to I&W's and Awake which they decided to record without bass guitar. (A bit of sarcasm of course...)

10:06 PLEASE DON'T GO!!!! (Well, someone had to say it....)

I wish Derek would have used a more synthy sound in his solos instead either the John Lords organ or the guitar sounding voice.

10:52 This is the keyboard voice that I don't really care for.... Too retro... 11:53 Is it just me or is John P forgetting to play the low strings? This part sounds really thin. Where did the lower tones go? Maybe the flanger that he is going through is filtering them out, but it still sounds weak. It makes my $800 stereo sound like a $40 boom box during this part.

12:18 Whoa!! Check out John Myung here!!! He's keeping up lick-for-lick with John P!! 12:49 This part is silly. I don't think it really fits. ( I don't really like the other little breaks at 12:35 or 12:42 that much either, they interupt the flow too much.) 13:01 Doesn't James usually sing here?? 13:29 I wished they wouldn't have changed the lyrics here. I miss "In all the world and all of you". James sounds great here. Some of his best stuff. I love when he sings "I feel like giving up". 14:24 I love those three little piano notes right here! The ones right after he sings "paradise". The rattling of the snares on the snare drum gets annoying after a while. You can hear them most of the times he does a big fill on the toms. ( examples 12:42 , 12:59, 13:16, 14:44, 22:05, 22:19) Funny that nobody else has mentioned this yet...

18:35 Every ass in the universe, past, present and future has just been kicked by this riff!! It's even better than the "Mother Mary" riff in Lie. The noise right at 18:35 sounds like something from Doom like when you kill a monster or something. Then the drums go into doubletime and the keyboard solo starts with the killer guitar riff still going. Man, you can't help but thrash around and headbang during this part!!! 19:54 Hmmm.... thats funny. I was working on a riff just like this a few months ago. I wonder if John was picking through my trash... :) 20:12 Damn!!! I really wish they would have left Kev's keyboard solo in here. It was SOOOO perfect. John kinda does something similar on the guitar but its just not the same. :'( 20:35 Another kick ass riff!!! At first I thought is sounded out of place but now that I've heard it several times, it really works well and adds a new feel to this section.

Derek's subtle piano work throughout the song is execellent.

21:27 I just love the way James sings "while". 22:35 Bringing back the acoustic section is a perfect ending. I think it could have used one more chord or note at the end, it kinda leaves you hanging, waiting for a resolution. But that can be cool too!!

A Change of Seasons has rejuvinated (sp?) my faith in DT. After hearing Awake and then the news the Kev had left I was starting to think that the future of DT was looking dim. I realize that ACOS is an old song but the additions to it are amazing. I like the new bits better than alot of the stuff on Awake. ACOS seems to have a perfect blend of the I & W's style with just the right amount of butt-kicking from Awake. The chunking 7-string is really effective when used spairingly (sp? - I can't spell worth shit :) ) and not beaten to death like Lie, Mirror or CIAW. I wonder how much input Derek had into the new sections? If he helped out alot, he should keep up the good work! Now I'm really looking forward to getting a full length album from them.

    ------

Well there ya go. Again, sorry for the wacky format but I've already spent a 1/2 hour trying to reformat it when I should be doing my homework.

Hey guys! I just have a few questions/comments.

    1) What is it that makes people think they hear Erotomania in ACoS? Is it Derek's sound during that 17/8 part? I really don't see any similarities other than that -- if that qualifies as a similarity. Hey, you know what? I think I hear Wait For Sleep in Space Die Vest!! ;)

    2) Derek a better live player than Kevin? Ha! You have GOT to be kidding. I have a bunch of boots from the Awake Tour, and Derek is always a step behind. Let me explain. Derek takes a solo. OK, now he's done. Now he'll figure out which sound he's using next on whichever keyboard he's using next. Now he'll press the buttons to get to his desired patch. While he's been trying to figure all this stuff out, he hasn't been *playing* JACK SQUAT! Listen to the boots -- how often are the keys absent? (and no, it's not because he's low in the mix) My point is this: Kevin thought a step ahead. He was always aware of upcoming changes in the song, and whatever musical and/or technical changes he needed to make. Derek just doesn't seem to do that very well. And as far as chops go -- they're both awfully *practiced* but Kevin is the talented one.

    3) The line "I don't need your sympathy . . . " from ACoS used to be "I don't need your *mercy* fuck . . .", not "massive fuck." Some guy had it in his sig that way. What exactly is a massive fuck? Ok, I guess I've got a few ideas . . . ;)

    4) Anyone know if the videos for Lie, CiaW, and TSM will be included in the Ronnie Scotts video for December? They better be, or I'm gonna have to start kickin' asses! 5) I really, really dig ACoS.

    6) On the movie front: Drop what you're doing, and go see "Seven" right away. This flick will blow you all away. I swear, it's the most intense, gripping, and disturbing movie I've seen in as long as I can remember. WOW!

    7) JP instructional video news?

    8) Uhhhh, I forget what eight is for! (Only line from the Violent Femmes that I can remember, so please don't flame me! I mean, hey -- they friggin' COUNT in a song!!)

    Your pissed-off-with-long-physics-problem-sets-ytsejammer-buddy,

    Brian
