    Hi Jammers,
I don't know if my previous mail arrived allright, but that was my
very first mail to the list. I'm an informatics student and the
mailserver at our school does some weird things sometimes, so I'm
never sure if any mail I send actually gets there.
Anyway, I was wondering what this ACOS is, that everybody is so
excited about. Can anyone fill me in?
    Later!

Anyway, on what FW album does "Ivory gate of Dreams" appear?

Snare triggers are a very nasty invention. The problem that Mike
had with them was that there is no sensitivity to the triggers. It
either registers each hit in full, or it doesn't register any hits at
all. It's kind of like a nerve impulse. Either you get total summation
to form an action potential, or you don't get any signal. This sucks ass
on a snare drum, because you can't do ghost strokes with most triggers.
All the subtle nuances to his style got lost because the trigger wouldn't
recognize them. Take Metropolis, for example. During the last
instrumental section (before they start the last round of lyrics),
they're doing that little groove that alternates 5's and 7's. We hear
the crash on the 1 and 3 (1,3, and 5 on the 7's), and the snare drum in
between all those. Well, as Mike told me, he wanted that snare part to
be in the background as filler. With the triggers, however, he had to
have it right up in the mix. The goo..er..well, Mr. Prater wouldn't
budge with the trigger idea. Unfortunately, DT was a relatively NEW band
to the big-market business when IaW came out. The band didn't have a
choice as with what to use. When ACoS came out, the band had more than
enough leverage with EastWest to decide what they wanted, and DIDN'T
    want, in the studio.

Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation...

On Saturday night, I went to see the Rush tribute band, Power
Windows, at the Rock and Roll Cafe in NYC. I've seen them about 10 times,
and, Saturday night, they were at their best! They hit all the old classics,
and did a damn good job with them, too. This was also, by far, the biggest
crowd I've seen at one of their shows. I highly recommend any NYC-area Rush
    fans to check them out.

Also, the members of Power Windows have an original progressive rock
band called Ten Ton Tide. I have their CD, and it's pretty good. It's a
littlw more like Saga than like Rush, but I'd still recommend it. At the
Roch 'n' Roll Cafe on Wednesday, Oct 4, there will be a special night of Prog
Rock, at which Ten Ton Tide is headlining. This should be a major event for
NYC-area independent-label prog, but future Prog Nights will be held only if
the response is good this Oct 4. Definitely make an effort to attend!

I would say definitely better than the one in ACoS. IGOD has an absolutely
beautiful central melody, played acoustically at the beginning and end,
and popping up throughout that in my opinion ties it all together much
better than the new ACoS, which I think is missing what was it's most
    unifying element (the classical flavour.)

The Ivory Gate of Dreams is a true masterpiece, and I must say I like
it more than A Change of Seasons. It's that good. On the No Exit album
for anyone who wants to try it out.

Oh, and the drums...oh god...in some places it sounds like the world is

    There's a revolution coming?
I had a long, really weird dream last night, and part of it was getting
to hear the new (post-Frank) Fates Warning, and dammit, it kicked some
serious ass. It sounded like Life in Still Water overlaid with this awesome
chorus sound like in 7th Son of a 7th Son, and with long neoclassical
passages like the one they unfortunately cut from ACoS. The song utterly
ruled. I'm hoping this was an accurate vision of a future FW song. If it
isn't, dammit, I'm just going to have to write it myself...

Today was the first day since I bought the E.P. that I really felt the
need for comparsions was in order. Now for those of you who think that
DoE is better, you have very big problems, or you must state you case better.
The e.p. is some much more complete and the lyrics are better worked.
The best way to do a comparison (which is what I did), is take the new
lyrics and listen to the old song. "My Eyes feel full with Desire
Fullfilled" or "All is lost with Nothing Fullfilled", I'll take the
latter. Also as far as PLEASE DO GO is concerned, orginally I thought it
was very important. Now I realize it only makes sense in the middle of
the song. III-- Carpe Diem--- right at the end. But as far as for
the end of the song PLESE DON'T GO just does't fit. The lyrics are the
same in both versions till that point and it just doesn't make sense to
have PDG. I think it is great to have both versions but, Please Don't Go
    is rightfully gone..

    Thanks for reading,

    > Now as for DT not developing/stating a them:

Ah, but that's the whole point, IMO. It's NOT *just a song*. Prog
rock has never been about writing *just songs*, no matter how much
people (like a certain cretinous P. Collins) like to try and dismiss
their past or present works. And even many *just songs* are great
*because* they have essay-like qualities: intro, statement of theme,
development, summary, closing. Don't kid yourself. Esp. 20 minute
jobs. How can that be *just a song*? Without themes, development, etc
it would just turn into a 20 minute wanking session (which some might
claim most 20 minute songs are anyway ;-)

And point #2 is that some of us *enjoy* dissecting songs that interest
us. It adds to our enjoyment.

That sounds like a great idea.

An idea I had would be to release some of the videos on CD, sort of
like Philips new Rainbow book CD format (I think this is what
it's called) that can play in a CD player or in a computer. They are
supposed to have computer data on them like music videos in
    Quicktime or MPEG format.

The only problem with this is that they wouldn't have as much room on
the CD for songs...... unless, it came with 2 CDs.

What's this about the ACOS cover not having the Majesty symbol, nor
WDADU? Whoever posted that, you need to have your eyes examined. :) The
Majesty logo is there, quite blatantly on the kid's sand bucket (well,
maybe not obvious at first, but you know they'd have to stick it in there
somewhere). As for WDADU, well, the logo is present about 2-3 times on

After many many many a listen (about 3 or more times a day since last
tuesday), I could only pick out a few things.

    - Early on I think I could hear "Dearly Beloved," which is common to
      most wedding ceremonies.
    - About 2/3 of the way through I heard (a rather distinctive) "something
      happened."
    - At the very end the was a very distinctive "was killed."

There is definately some talking in the background. Whether or not we
are *supposed* to hear it is another question.

Anyone else hear something more / else / different?

Hey everyone, I have been a lurker for a while, and I decided to post.

First, I have to say to whoever it was that posted about the ivory gate of dreams: I completely agree that the ivory gate... is an amazing so, that should have gotten a better recognition.
BTW, I love anacrusis (prog thrash!)

Another thing is about the samples in SDV. I though one time that While listening to WDADU (maybe on FIL or near the beginning of the CD) I heard a SDV sample. Maybe it's me, but I could have sworn that it's true.

One of my friends told me that the bassist of echolyn left :'-( I sure hope that it isn't true. That would suck for such a talented band.
    thanks for your ears!

Sorry about the little comment I made about Derek kicking Kevin's
ass on keyboards. I never really thought about that until after I said it.
It was just that this guy I had never heard of before came on stage and blew
us all away. They have very different styles of playing. But, if you have
seen the both live, then you will know what I am talking about. Derek has a
much better concert play than Kevin did. Kevin is probably better in the
studio but I would have to go with Derek live.

Sorry to have ruffled any feathers of you die hard Kevin Moore fans.

    :)

All of the DT pages on the net seem to have the guitar tablature(i know i
spelled it wrong) but i was wondering if anyone out there had the piano
transcriptions - particularly for SDV. Thanks

    Hello Ytsejammers!

I got a tape of Kevin's demos last night. The songs are pretty good, and
the lyrics are interesting. I guess I don't like Kevin's new direction that
much. I've only listened to it twice - I'm sure that in a few days I'll be
loving it as much as the rest of the DT albums!

Song for Eric is really neat. I never heard the original a capella version,
but I'm impressed with Kevin's music here.

The Space-Dye Vest demo has poor production quality and Kevin seems to mess
up a lot - the chords are NOT harmonious with the music. I'm glad he
changed it - the new (Awake) version is much better.

I'm listening to "Roll Away the Stone" right now. It's pretty cool!

And I listened to "A Change Of Seasons" all weekend. It ROCKS - quite
possibly my favourite DT song (surpassing "Metropolis", "Learning to Live"
and "Space-Dye Vest"). The lyrics to "The Crimson Sunset" are REALLY
powerful - Mike's writing is great!

How I first got into Dream Theater:

I was a reader of The National Midnight Star, and many people kept
mentioning this awesome band, this "Dream Theatre" thing. I was in
California and looking at sheet music, and saw tabs for two DT albums, in
"normal" notation (you know, with the treble clef and stuff - not just for
guitar). I realized that I should check this band out, but I didn't buy any
DT-related merchandise. When I got back to Iowa, I bought Awake and was
hooked after the 6:00 drum roll!!

    See ya!

     Hi there!

First of all I'd like to reproduce the zillionth "ACos" EP
review here. Not because I want to be the zillionth who throws in
his $0.02, but because this review will actually appear in a
magazine. I wonder if there are other people on the list who have
the same opinion about the EP. Maybe the hype was just too
much. The bit below is about 80% of the review, the bit about the
title song. The other stuff has been reviewed enough, I guess...

    THE "ACoS" REVIEW

Most prominent on this album is the 23'06" epic song "A Change
of Seasons", taking up almost half of the total playing length.
For those of you who have heard me raving on about this song in
earlier issues of "ST News" (as well as this time's "Concert
Reviews" and a bootleg CD review a bit further down), you will
find it easy to understand that I've been looking forward to this
    EP quite a lot.
"A Change of Seasons" was originally written in 1989 and to be
included on "Images and Words". It didn't make it on there. The
song has since been played live twice during the "Images and
Words" tour, during which it soon got cult status. Every real
Dream Theater fan has the "The Dance of Eternity" version of the
song, available on several different bootleg as well as the
"Subconscious" collection CD made by people of the Internet
"Ytsejam" mailing list. In May this year the band spent some time
rewriting and rehearsing, then finally did what many of the
dedicated fans had wanted them to do all the time: Record the
    song on an official CD.
"A Change of Seasons", well, is the best song Dream Theater have
ever written. However, the version on the EP is rather different
from the live one. For starters it's a bit slower. The vocals are
a lot less passionate, which is probably the biggest con I can
mention about this version (they even threw out the vocal climax
of the "The Dance of Eternity" version, the "PLEASE DON'T GO!").
A big pro is the fact that some of the segments are so heavy you
can flatten unflattenable objects with it. I would preferred them
to have recorded the song in one go and then add the acoustic
guitar bits, for the production seems pretty inconsistent. The
    heavieness is sometimes lost considerably.
And new keyboardists Derek Sherinian? He plays his organ
Hammond-style most of the song, Deep Purple style, but at the end
of the song really lets it rip in a style more similar to
previous keyboardist Kevin Moore. But I have to say Kevin was a
f*@king genius and I really miss the subtle and very emotional
layer under the song, especially during the last bits of the "V.
    Another World" segment.
So "A Change of Seasons", though a worthy carrier of the flame
on this EP, is not quite what I'd expected and hoped it would be.
For those who have never heard the bootleg version I guess it's
an excellent song, but for me it just seems a bit sacriligeous
that they changed a few bits rather too much, that James LaBrie
doesn't scream his lungs out where he should, and that they
didn't, well, convince Kevin to come back for a stint.
I for one am intensely glad I have both versions. The emotion-
laden one on "The Dance of Eternity", and this more refined one.

    THE NEWS

Yes, for those of you who waded through this post there is also
some news. There is good news and bad news.
The bad news is that the alleged release of the "Perfect
Strangers" CD single is a myth, at least until the end of
November. So non-Japanese will have to wait until that time at
    least.
The good news is that the entire Ronny Scott's gig will be
featured on a full-length video to be released in December.
That's the Dutch release date, obtained through Warner Records
(also the same source that told me the CD single won't happen, at
    least not for a while).
If you'll allow me to speculate a bit, it's conceivable that
this single *might* be released around that time.

    TO THE JAPANESE

Has any of you already won one of those 1000-copy limited
    edition bonus CD singles? Comments?

    QUESTION TO BOOTLEG PEOPLE

When will there be a version of the bootleg list more recent than
    January 1995? Please?

    Hi fellow jammers!

Just thought its time for me to post again since I have something to say! :)

Anyway, first off, Airdance, Im curious to know if youve spoken to Kevin
lately and if so, whats him opinion of ACoS?

Someone mentioned that the cover for ACoS was relatively simple as opposed to
Awake and I&W. True, but lets remember 2 things: 1 its not a full length
album (by DTs standards) and 2 the cover represents only 1 song as opposed to
Awake which has some reference to each of the 11 songs hidden in the cover and
I&W which has some reference to the 8 songs on it. BTW, it may not be as
complex as the others, but I like it and it is more complex than either the
HYF or CP covers from Rush.

And speaking of Rush, for all you fellow Rushies who may not have seen this on
the NMS, someone (not me) posted that there is a pro-shot vid of a CP show
thats starting to circulate - sound and video are reportedly much better than
the pro-shot Presto vid from the same venue. I dont have it but Ill keep
everyone up to date on it.

And one last thing: I was the compulsive idiot who made suggestions about
getting together a whole buncha petitions. Thanx (and I really do mean that)
for some of you pointing out that we shouldnt push our luck - I needed to
cool off! However, one little thing that I would love to see is for DT to
have an official bootleg label to release stuff to us big-time fans. As one
person pointed out, Marillion and Fish have both done this (Im sure much to
Marillion-fans delight) even though it may not be the most cost effective.
Sometime down the road (not anytime soon), I think it would be nice to see an
official boot of such stuff as the Majesty demos, live shows, etc. Being that
some members are against bootlegs, this would be a way to combat boots as
theyd be able to chose the performances to release (since thats one of the
main complaints). Mike P, if your reading this, keep this in mind. :) Sorry
if I sound annoying or like I just contradicted myself (by apologizing and
then mentioning about a boot label) - I didnt try to. Ok, Ill shut up now!

Hi, I just thought I'd preface this by saying I'm pretty new to DT and the
jam. Before last weekend, I had only heard Images and Words, which I
borrowed from a friend. Then, after talking to a couple of people, I
decided to get ACoS. When I was in the mall, I wandered into a music store
after already having purchased the album at another store. I heard one of
the guys behind the counter say "...a 23 minute title track, who do they
think they are, King Crimson?" I said are you talking about DT, and the
guys behind the counter started cracking up and said yeah, have you heard
the new ep yet? I told them I had just bought it and didn't have time to
listen to it yet, and they said, "Well, you're going to now" and proceded to
play it over the store's speaker system. I thought it was pretty cool.

that many responses though! I plan on sending the
results to the jam after I have a lot of responses then
in about 6 months or so I will do it again to see if
everyone's opinions have changed. PLEASE SEND
    ME YOUR VOTES NOW!

I also want your 1st opinions of the cd that is
why I am doing it right away.

    Here are the questions for those who don't know;

    1. From 1 to 10, how do you rate this CD?

    2. Which section of the song ACOS is your Favorite?
        ( I,II,III,IV,V,VI, or VII)

    3. Which cover is your favorite? (Please be specific, don't
