Hello Again Jammers!
U2 Song
-------
Dream Theater played Red Hill Town at the covers show. I think the rest
of the set list that was posted in the last digest was complete. I just
posted the list to the Usenet because people kept asking about it,
Phish and Fish
--------------
For the individual who says that Phish blows, well you haven't heard the
live recording yet. It is really cool, lots of improv and jamming, jazz,
spacy, rockin. lots of influences show through. I don't really care much
for their studio work.
Fish (former Marillion lead singer) really hasn't produced too much
interesting material in the last few years IMO. His work with Marillion
was great stuff, and his first solo album is good, but the great Fishy
one seems to being trying too much to be liked by the mainstream and he
is at his best musically when he is cursing people and pissed off. I
have to agree with Steve Rothery's assessment of Fish, "He sounds like
Phil Collins (as a solo artist) now."
Once again I have another digest

This is fun, Portnoy is going to have to take a lot of shits to catch up
with us now. <grin>

Please forgive my ignorance on the subject of Marillion (sp?). I never
even heard of them until this recent thread of conversation on the Jam.
Okay, okay. So, now I know who Fish is. I'm going to spend about half
of my next paycheck at the record store anyway, so if I see any
Fish/Marillion, I'll get some.
BTW: Phish does not suck. Maybe I'm weird because I can go from DT to
REM to Anthrax to Dave Matthews (you should SEE my CD collection!), but I
just consider myself open to many types of music. After all, I'm a
musician. If you keep playing or listening to the same thing, you don't
grow.
Man, I'm wearing the shit out of this soapbox. Anyone got an extra?

hello jammers!
Ive been lurking for quite some time now. With the release of the EP
I thought now is a good time for my first post.
ACOS absolutely rules. The more I listen to it, the more blown away I
am.
It's been interesting reading everybody's critique of this new studio
version. I guess DT should have gotten ytsejammers to produce ACOS
instead of Prater.
Which brings me to a cool idea. Wouldn't it be awesome if DT could
release a cd-rom interactive version of the song. They could have
recorded all the parts they have had in the song before plus the new
parts, and then we could cut and paste together the "perfect" version.
Think of it: replacing Portnoy's piccolo snare sound (which BTW i love)
with the triggered I&W sound; or adding in the "Please Don't Go" part;
or that classical part thats missing from this version.
Hell, maybe Kevin could have played on it too, and we could choose
between him and Derek - or mix and match them both!
Then all ytsejammers could have their own ultimate version of ACOS.
what do you guys think?

They didn't do the covers for fans as much as they did it as a tribute to
the bands that they enjoyed while they were growing up. As far as I know
(correct me if I'm wrong), they weren't even planning on releasing the
stuff until they decided to do ACoS (for us :). And why would you call it
wasting time? I personally enjoy listening to it. :)

Having never heard the live version of ACoS I suppose that I'm not missing
the improv parts. I don't mind the snare sound b/c I think that it gives it
plenty of punch, but it seems to change slightly after TCS section, does
anybody else notice this or is it just me??? I'd also like to thank the

I'm not sure if anyone else found this one or not, but I just ran across
the source of one of the SDV samples from Kevin's demo tape.
During what sounds like a channel surf sample, there's a guy telling a girl
something about a difference in age:
"Look...uhh...you're 21, and I'm 33."
"Are you trying to say you don't want to see me again?"
"No...no, no, no. Absolutely not.....yes.
"Age doesn't matter."
I was surfing during a commercial brake during the Raiders/Rams game when
I came across an episode of "Full House." Turns out the sample is
Bob Saget talking to some girl he was dating. She was dancing to some
music with the oldest daughter in the show when he comes in fuming about
the loud music.
Weird what you can discover by channel surfing. :)

Had to comment on this:
<< (in this vein, even though i'm not too crazy about pearl jam, i do feel bad
for their early core fans who got swamped by success of this type. >>
I was listening to Pearl Jam for a month before the video for "Alive" was
ever released. Nonconformist that I am, six months later I quit wearing the
one PJ shirt that I had because people were accusing me of jumping on the
bandwagon with everyone else. I rarely listen to any of the material these
days, but I still really like _Ten_ and _Vs._. Can't listen to prog/power
metal *all* the time. I haven't even been listening to it all that much the
past couple of months, with the exception of "ACOS". I think PJ really lost
something with _Vitalogy_, though; I was not impressed in the least.
Repeat of a story I told the last time someone asked this question: when I
was living up in Rochester, NY, I used to listen to 96 WCMF, the local rock
n' roll station. (until I discovered a much better college station, 90.7
WGCC.) Around Sept. of 1992, I kept hearing this totally awesome song,
"Pull Me Under". I had no idea who the band was (because the damned DJs
would never say), but I kept cranking up the volume every time I heard it.
When a DJ finally announced the name of the band, I went out and bought
_Images_ and that was the end of that.

I'll try to keep this short.
I've basically finished my rendering of the Majesty symbol. You can see
it at various (320x240, 640x480, and 800x600) resolutions on my home page
(see .sig for URL). Also, watch for an MPEG movie of the symbol rotating
on the alt.binaries.multimedia newsgroup. If you can't get newsgroups I'm
willing to send it you via email...just let me know, and be prepared for a
huge message (the .MPG is over 500K).
Does anyone else get the chills when he/she listens to the beginning of
"Funeral For A Friend"? I do, especially when the guitar makes its
entrance. What a rush!

Hello everyone! How the hell are ya?
I thought I would share this little DT story with you...
I was in the mall the other day and I happened to walk past Harmony House.
I heard 2 notes and was paralyzed in my tracks... They were actually playing
A Change of Seasons!!!! Well, of course I had to go in to listen to it...
and compliment teh employees on their good taste in music. It was towards
the end of Carpe Diem and everyone was drumming to the beat on the counters
and whatever they could find. It was cool because everyone in the store seemed
to be into it! Oh... and I actually found the CD for soundtrack of 'Legend'!
It was a good day. The clerk said 'That's a great soundtrack! It's about time
they released it on CD!' I said 'Absolutely... And I must say... You guys have
great taste in music!' Anyway, that's my little story...
Hello from Hiroshima! I just made the long trip Saturday! (Hell of a long
trip!) I can't wait to get out of my meetings and head for the music store!
To Matt (Sirois?): 'Bombay Vindaloo' Kicks Ass!!!! Love it! It kind of
reminds me of 'Xanadu' by Rush... When I saw Rush live, I was hoping they
would play Xanadu... And to my delight, they did! It ruled... Anyway, they
sound very similar to me.... And they Rule!
To Mike (Patrick?): On that 'frieght train' thing... Yeah, that kicks ass!
Is that one of the coolest things you've heard or what!
..Oh, any relation to Dan Patrick of Sportscenter fame? He's great!
And randomly... I think Derek did a pretty good job. I'm a huge fan of
Kevin though.... I guess the jury will be in around the Spring of '96...
I had a long flight to listen to my DT library (probably the only thing that
made it bearable), and every time I hear ACoS I love it even more! Especially
Another World and Carpe Diem!
Well, gotta go for now...
See ya!
Craig

What's this about the ACOS cover not having the Majesty symbol, nor WDADU? Whoever posted that, you need to have your eyes examined. :) The Majesty logo is there, quite blatantly on the kid's sand bucket (well, maybe not obvious at first, but you know they'd have to stick it in there somewhere). As for WDADU, well, the logo is present about 2-3 times on the front and back.

Why is everyone now saying they don't like the sampled/triggered drum
sounds on I&W?? I thought the drums sounded excellent. Maybe Mike P.
doesnt't like them because it's hard to replicate that sound on the
road. Who knows? I&W put these guys on the charts lest we forget.
I&W was DT's swansong album-wise - the best to date.
I believe a studio production by a band is like a painting by a graphic
artist. It is controlled, a work of art. Different hues, royal blues,
the careful stroke of the brush and, well you know the rest.... I love
the production/engineering of I&W, nice warm drum sound, I've played
acoustic drums for 24 years now and I like the natural too. But Led
Zep, Yes and a number of other bands did work in the studio they could
only imitate on stage. That doesn't take away from the bands talent.
The drum sound on WDADU is something to gripe about, though I do like
the drums on Awake.
I wonder if Kevin (I miss him) would have stayed with the band if they
kept going in the same direction as I&W. I.E. the varied tracks,
acoustic piano, guitar and of course the sax! I was attracted to DT
for the contrast in their style from track to track. Didn't see that
as much on Awake, though I do love that CD.
Space Dye Vest should not of been put on Awake, a waste of space.
Besides it's depressing and it gave me the feeling that Kevin was
feeling sorry for himself because of their musical differences.
Of course this is my opinion and don't offer any apologies, after all
this is one of the reasons we're on this list anyway, opinions, right?

Just thought you would like to see the complete poem:
"To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time"
Gather ye rosebuds while ye may.
Old time is still a-flying;
And this same flower that smiles today,
Tomarrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting,
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.
The age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
But being spent, the worse, and worst
Times still succeed the former.
Then not be coy, but use you time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may forever tarry.
Robert Herrick
You can interpret this poem a number of ways, the day.

With ACoS being 23+ minutes there's been a lot of talkon the jam
about the art of composing a long song, as well as the mentioning of other
long songs from Rush and the like. Sadly, and perhaps criminally, no one
mentioned "Ivory Gate of Dreams" by Fates Warning. At 21.58 I'd certainly
call it long, and it's definitly progressive. And like ACoS it has an
acoustic intro/outro (maybe even better than the one in ACoS). At around
10.30 there's a beautiful piano solo, which is later repeated on the guitar
towards the end of the song. Definitely worth checking out...
Sorry to all thos loyal FW fans who knew this already (I hope
there's a lot of you). When the Revolution is over, you will be richly
rewarded.
Okay, DT content. The official explanation of Space-Dye Vest
(probably common knowledge, but here goes):
"It was inspired by... I was looking through a clothing catalog &
saw a picture of a girl modeling this piece of clothing called a space dye
vest. and, so, I fell in love with her [laughs] for some strange reason &so
the minute I did that, the minute I was just like obsessed w/this person, I
was like, 'whay am I doing that?' & I noticed I was doing it a lot lately.
And I think the prime reason that I was doing that, and this is what I
figured out at the time, was that I had just come out of a relationship
where I'd gotten dumped, basically, and so I think the situation was that I
wasn't finished giving all that I was ready to give, so I was jsut like,
throwing it around, you know, just aiming it in diferent directions. It
was a total case of projection. And this song is just trying to sort it out
& just kind of admitting htat I'm just kind of lost. so it's kind of a dark
song. It was ver cathartic though."
- Kevin Moore, Japanese interview
There you go. I can relate, lots of emotion, well written, the man
is a god (as is everyone in DT). Anyway...
Once again, does anyone on this list listen to Anacrusis? There
must be other fans somewhere!
Long live the Revolution.
Matt
