We've all been hearing a lot of talk/complaining/ranting/praise/etc.
about the differences between the Subconscious version and the EP
version - somebody's favorite part got axed (the absence of the "Don't
Go" seems to be a very popular complaint) and "this part rocks!" or "this
    part..."

But the way I look at it, I'm just thankful that I have both versions to
    listen to!

Here is why I think they changed/added/omitted certain parts.

During the songwriting process, from the original inspiration to the time
you commit the final version to tape, the musicians/songwriters are fully
within their right to change anything. The songwriter will want to
change stuff here and there throughout the whole process. A recent
    musical experience taught me this.

Back in May of this year, a friend of mine and I decided that we wanted
to record a shred-o-rama version of Pachelbel's Canon in D. It was kind
of a last minute thing, but it turned out okay, or so I thought. I still
stand by it, but for a couple of months now, every now and then, I think
of things I would like to do differently. Given an opportunity to change
things here and there, I would do so in earnest.

So over the course of six years, arrangements will beg for change, lyrics
are subject to reevaluation, re-wording, redoing. Having first been
conceived six years ago, and the growth as people and musicians that the
band have endured, I don't question them one bit for changing it.
Although the EP was for the fans, it is still important for the band to
live up to their own very high standards and release something that they
feel is the best presentation of the ideas expressed within the song.

Besides, it keeps with the spirit of the I&W sessions in that the song was
re-worked several times before commiting a final version. All the songs on
I&W were given such treatment. BTW, IMHO (and other common 'net
abbreviations) it's further evidence of DT's adaptability and versatility
inasmuch as, for exampe, "Metropolis" was written over the course of
three months, and *all* the songs on _Awake_ were also written in a three
month span of time and it doesn't make _Awake_ a less complete/polished
album as I&W - just different. It just goes to show what this band can
do under pressure or if "they take the time, reevaluate, pick up the pieces,
go back to square one" and change things around.

I don't think Alan White is a bad drummer. Yeah, he's no Bill Bruford, but
he handles Yes songs better than Tony K handled Rick's keyboard parts. And
Trevor did a great job on all the Yes songs, IMHO. So, I don't understand the
statements here. The only person who should have never been in Yes is Tony K.
    the others are fine.

    Hi again!

To Kyle Mallett about Return To Metalopolis by Chris Poland:

Out of print? I'll gonna care for my copy a bit more ;-). It's a very nice
guitar album, just instrumental, with Chris' brother on drums. No expensive,
but quite good production, and some good songs. You hear Chris' speed roots
really often, but it fits. The only guitar player's album I've ever cared
    for!

Worst case scenario, Pearl Jam's early fans:

Vitalogy SUCKS! But you forgot the most extreme we-did-not-sellout-album:
In Utero. What a sick rough disc, and it did crash on #1 on Billboard, didn't
it? Cobain had to shoot himself to stop this ;-|...

    ACOS:

I LOVE this acoustic ending! It's sort of a frame, just perfect. I always
thought the original end was boring, just this big WHAM and that's it.
Nothing special. But the studio version closes the circle. But...

Look at all these reviews of ACOS. So many different preferences...

    Bye, Steffen

was annoyed that people kept spelling phish wrong:

Fish may well have been a dude in Barney Miller, I don't know, I never
watched it, but the REAL Fish is the ex-singer for Marillion, and now is
    an accomplished solo artist.

I also get pissed when people confuse Fish and Phish because Phish blows

I was gonna write a really long and rambling reply to this post about
wanting DT to have success, but not too much; but it didn't turn out that
well. And since the last sentence is an understatement of approximatly the
same magnitude that saying "ACoS is decent" would be, I cut it.

To sum up my long ramble that has been for the most part deleted forever, I
wouldn't mind DT getting really big as long as they wouldn't change
style. I don't care what they do, as long as it's good. If everyone
    starts to like it, fine.

The only cool part, I have kept. It however, had absolutly nothing to do
    with anything...

    > (in this vein, even though i'm not too crazy about pearl jam, i do feel bad
    > for their early core fans who got swamped by success of this type. [and
    > nirvana's "teen spirit" actually did get arranged for marching band.])

To change the subject for a little while, I once had a dream that I was
looking for sheet music for marching band (I was a drummer my last year
and a half of high school) and while leafing through the music, i saw
drum parts for _Master of Puppets_ and _Battery_... anyways...
    ----------------------------------------------------------------

To sum: If I like what a band puts out, I'm gonna buy the album. Yeah,
bands can go to the Extreme in reaction to hit it big... aww.. I'm
rambling with nothing to say again... i dunno... ACoS rulez?

Yeah, I know the Subconscious version is "dead" but I still (for now) prefer
is musically over the new one. What can I say? I like the more "classical"
    sounding bits.

One thing, though: when they come around here next time on tour, when it
gets to the first "please don't go!" part, I'm gonna shout it, and I bet I
won't be the only one... :)

As far as it being called the "Subconscious" version instead of the "DoE"
version, Subconscious was the closest thing we had to an "official" release
until a few days ago. I think a fan-produced compilation carries more
weight than a bootleg, even if the fan one was taken from the boot.

How I Got Into DT: In November 92 or thereabouts, I turned on my car stereo
and heard an amazing sound. Heavy metal guitars with a pronounced,
aggressive string melody playing over it. "Wow!" I said to myself, "Metal
with keyboards that aren't hiding!" I only caught the end of this
miraculous sound and sadly, the name was not announced.

In December, a good friend of mine died, and I was spending a few days with
my mother to get away from thingsand mellow out. I decided to go for a
drive. I was in a moody, analytical frame of mind, and so I was breaking
apart and analyzing all the songs on the radio. Something I hadn't heard
before came on. Good guitar, Good drums & bass. Sounds metal. Hey, some
keyboards. THe singer's voice is okay, but not terribly original. (my
favorite vocalist is Geoff tate -- that to me is the perfect vocal sound) I
decided I liked the song. Then they get to the end and HEY it's the song I
heard before and really liked. I hoped that the DJ would announce the song
and sure enough, it was something called "Pull Me Under" by the band "Dream
Theater" off an album named "Images and Words" -- they gave me all the
relevant info. Well, I'm happy now, I should buy it. hey, isn't that a
tower records up ahead? Maybe I'll see if they have the album.....

    And thus it began.

Okay, my somewhat belated thoughts on ACOS, after listening to it for almost a week now and having time to have it sink in:

I'm still not sure whether I like this version or the old one better. I love most of the parts they've added to this version, but I really miss what they
removed. Towards the end of "The Inevitable Summer", after that drum fill by Mike, I still keep expecting it to go into that classical sounding part. The new, slower guitar part is just as cool, but I think it would've been a lot better if they'd kept both parts in.

Similarly, the new intro and outtro are pretty cool. I wish at the part where it kicks into the old intro that they'd have repeated that riff a few more times. The new, slow guitar parts are nice though, they add a hell of a lot of emotion to the song, and to the overall feeling. But I really miss the old instrumental part. I wish they'd kept more of that in (why not make the song 26 minutes?).

Now, everyone seems to be praising Derek's keys. I liked Kev's version MUCH better. What the hell is that distorted keyboards thing (or whatever the heck he's doing) towards the end of "The Inevitable Summer"? It sounds really screwed up, and screws up that part, IMHO. Derek's keyboard solos aren't bad, but definately not like Kevin's. Go back and listen to the DOE version, I personally like it much better. Derek's solo is kinda cool, but it sounds like anything an average keyboardist could do, whereas Kevin's stuff was always brilliant, very different (for lack of a better word). I'm not sure how to explain it, but I'm a keyboardist myself, and I tend to be picky about certain things. I guess a better way to explain what I'm saying,
is that to me, it's kinda like comparing your typical heavy metal guitar solos to Petrucci's solos... Derek's just seem a bit plain.

Anyway, I don't know what the point of the above paragraph was. The bottom line is I liked Kevin's stuff a lot better. But I'm not going to make any kind of judgement about Derek until the next full length album. His writing on that will make up my mind as to whether he's better or not. I did like some of the stuff he did (like the chorus of voices thing in the intro).

Okay, production. I'm not an audiophile, or an engineer, or anything like that, but I thought the production was GREAT. The CD sounds amazing anyway. I think I like it better than Awake. However, I'd have to agree with everyone who says it's too thin. That was what jumped out and bit me immediately the first time I listened to the song. I don't know what it is. I love Mike's snare sound, and the sound of the rest of his drums, but I do agree that it's a bit thin, and I'm not sure if it made sense for a band like DT - their music is complicated and intricate, and ACOS sounds a lot simpler than the other stuff on I&W. I think I'd even have preferred the triggered drums on I&W to the way they sound here. If they had produced it exactly the same way as I&W was, I would probably have liked it better.

One notable thing that I'm not sure anyone has mentioned yet, is John's bass. It's a LOT more audible than it has been on their past albums (at least, that's what I've noticed), and I hope they do this on the next album as well. At the same time I thought the keys were mixed maybe a tad low at times, and this ties back to what I've said before about Derek, but there were MANY parts where I think there should've been more keyboard accompanyment throughout the song.

Another obvious thing I haven't mentioned is the vocals. I LOVE the vocal harmonies, and James' vocal work on "Another World". I'd have to agree that it's his best work yet. If he can keep this up for all of the next full length album, then I'll love it. I don't mind if he uses a rawer version of his voice, or screams, but as long a it' well-placed, and he doen't do it for an entire song like on Awake. The vocal on this song absolutely rule...

Anyway, those are my comments for now - I'm sure you've all weeded through enough of these already (I have about 4 jams that I have to go and read after I post this), but I had to express my feelings about this. Apologies for the
    length.

Have you ever noticed that if you log on about four or five times a day you get a new YTSEJAM digest each time.

Anyway-- THE SNARE -- To me it is very reminiscent of John Stainer's (HELMET) snare. That very crisp, ping to it. Like my friend John and I discussed it nothing like the ultimate AWAKE sound, but to me it's amazing in it's own right. I don't know, however, if I would want to here an entire album with this snare.

Second point (actually a question). Is there any vocal harmonies on this E.P. sung by someone other than James. James does a lot of over dubbing, but I thing there is a part where John is singing. For those of you who haven't heard John's voice, I think it is very good especially for harmony, no if only Kevin was in the band we could have those Yes, Echolyn harmonies. I'm not busting on Dt here, I just think harmonies are important, and further more sound awesome.

Third point. Go out to you local record store and buy some Genesis. I mean sometimes I think this band is greatly overlooked. Today I was listening to "Selling England By the Pound". Hey, even Mike Portnoy wants to cover "Firth of the Fifth" of of that album.

And as far as A Change of Seasons ramblings, I have not even begun to type.

Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in about ACoS. Thought ACoS was great. The more I listen to it, the more I like it. Kinda the way all of my DT albums were. These guys are just so good together. I was very worried this last February when I went to another DT concert at the Tower Theater in Houston, and Kevin was not with them. WOW! Talk about shocked, but there was this guy, who was playing in with the band named Derek Sherinian. Didn't even looked like he belonged in the band. Was quite unusual. The rest of them were all wild and had long flowing hair and here was Derek with very short hair and he was a very calm player. But then they broke into Metropolis and I thought WOW! This guy kicks Kevin's ass on keyboards. Kevin is great and has a style all his own but I must say that DT did one hell of a job getting a replacement.

Derek's playing style could take DT in all new directions. I for one am glad to see he is with the band. Hope he stays for a while to come.

    ---

Have any of you heard of a band called Saga? They are from Canada and have a similiar sound to DT. Very keyboard related. They have been likened to a mix between Rush, Marillion, Pink Floyd and Dream Theater. I think they have a style all their own. If you haven't heard anything from them yet, go buy Generation 13, you won't be dissapointed.

so i got acos today. scary stuff. i wasn't aware that portnoy wrote the lyrics. wow...that is awesome. some of my favorite drummers are all guys who can write too (i.e., neil peart and will calhoun).

it was cute how they went from wayward son to rhapsody. james did sound a bit flat on one of the tunes, but that's ok..i don't think hendrix is looked at any less for not being perfect. and spaking of not being perfect, derek actually did pretty well, which was a pleasant surprise, being that i never liked him (i still prefer kevin, but alas..)

so no one has a clue about the awake + bonus cd?? oh well....should i drop $45 for it anyways??

so as a personal recommendation, once acos has gone thru the cd player 6475687 times, go and check out thought industry. they are cookin'. maybe "progressive thrash"??

so i'll be going now. see ya all. here's to a new dream theater that will "tide us over" til next year. david

ps- who's the old guy on the back cover??

It had to be done eventually. I have given into peer pressure (I'm so weak). Here's what I think of ACoS:

On Derek: He fits like a glove (unlike O.J.) into DT. The boy can play!! His solo on "The Inevitable Summer" is amazing. I'm not a keyboard player, so I can't get techinical. I like what sounds good and he sounds great. Now the only question is whether or not he can write.

On James: Much more controlled performance than on DoE, which is good. I highly disagree with the idea that he is not singing with emotion. Listen to his performance on "Carpe Diem." If that doesn't convince you, listen to the part during "Another World" that ends with "I feel like giving up." The inflection in his voice sends shivers down my spine.

On Mike's Snare sound: It sounds fine to me. The tendancy for rock bands in the 90s is to move away from the big BOOM of the deep snares of the 80s (this is unfortunate, because I love a huge snare sound). This trend, in my opinion, was started by Dave, the former drummer of Pearl Jam. In any case, Mike's snare sounds fine, although I little more reverb might have helped out here and there. His live snare sound on the other tracks is better, in my opinion.

On "Funeral For a Friend/ Love Lies Bleeding": This is probably my favorite track on the album, besides "ACoS." In fact, I've actually listened to it more than any other track, including "ACoS." The band sounds very tight and demonstrates how good a live band should be. James sounds great, especially during the long "Whoa" at the end. Mike also kicks ass on this one.

On "Perfect Strangers:" I've never heard the original, but I like this version of it.

On the Zep medeley: I've never been a Zep fan, so this is the track I've listened to the least. Great performances, but then this is DT we're talking about here.

On "The Big Medeley": Wow!!! I've always hated Pink Floyd, mostly because of the depressing vocals. But James puts new personality into it. The Kansas part is really cool, although I think it went on a little too long. Just my opinion. "Bohemian Rhapsody" sounds really cool, but I think I like Extreme's version of it better (they cover the same part almost). I love the transition into the Journey song, which is my favorite song in the medeley. James gives it his all on this one. The Genesis song is decent, but not really that interesting. The ending seems VERY abrupt. I guess I was just expecting something on a grander scale. ++++++++++++LAST THING< I PROMISE++++++++++++

On Petitions: Okay, this is getting ridiculous. Let's not get too cocky. We played a part in putting a wonderful thing together. But wanting the band to satisfy your every need seems to be a bit excessive. Give it at least a year or so before overwhelming Elektra or whoever with requests for transcriptions, bonus tracks, etc. We don't want to wear out our welcome. If they get a petition a week from us, they'll stop taking us seriously. Think about it this way: every kid wants it to be Christmas every day. But if it were to actually happen, the value of it would be diminished. The whole idea behind it is that you better appreciate it because it doesn't happen very often. We've been lucky, but let's not get trigger-happy. Just my opinion.

It's a bug in the software--the server will occasionally increment the digest number by 2 instead of 1. No articles are lost (I've checked a number of times)--it only appears that way.

Anyway, there's one very famous band that came from > Burlington. They spell their name PHISH. FISH is the guy from Barney > Miller. (That's about as irritating as Dream Theatre.)

Fish is the former lead vocalist of Marillion, a progressive rock band. All of the recent references (that I've seen) have been in reference to Fish, not Phish.

Btw, Fish's "Yin" & "Yang" are out now, though they are hard to find. They're a "best of" collection which reportedly has a number of interesting remakes.

I haven't received a jam in the past 15 hours. I am starting to get worried. Has the enthusiasm already faded? But I digress.

What rules: About 22:20 of ACoS and the last four tracks What doesn't: 12:50-12:53 of ACoS, the line "off the pages and the TV screen" and Mike's cymbals from 20:12 to about 20:35 (I find myself chanting "Mike stop, Mike stop..." (JP does a beautiful job, though)) What is odd aboutthe last one, is that it is on the DoE/Subc. version, but I never noticed it.

Responses to previous posts and other stuff: 1. My ranking of the parts (and this is painful to do since almost the entire thing is so awesome) 1, 2, 7, 3, 6, 4, 5. 2. I like "The Darkest Years" but that may only be since it kind of fits in with ACoS mood. 3. I only count 6 of hands of James, not 7. 4. In looking at the credits to Awake, I came across the programmer for Space-Dye Vest. Who was it? Our good buddy Rich Kern. 5. I got into DT when Mad-dog and B-$ brought I&W and Awake with them on a roadtrip to see the ASU/UofA game last Thanksgiving. I was driving so I wasn't paying that close attention, but a month later (and three weeks after DT came to Tempe) I copied I&W, and the rest is history. 6. At a local Tower, they have a big board of future releases. For October 24, it said "nothing worth mentioning." 7. When our "Acoustic Dreamer" posted the "no legs" message, I thought for what symbollic purpose would that serve? So I took a look at the lyrics and actually found that throughout most of it, an interpretation of an overprotective father of a handicapped child was deserted by the mother can actually be supported. Not that it is a correct interp, but go ahead, look at the lyrics. It fits. The protaganist longed to search for more, but no longer can (he is responsible for the care of his child). He is witness to the inequality, subtle visciousness, and ignorance concerning the handicapped. His "deepest fright" is that themother will leave forcing him to raise his child alone. The images offered in books and TV promote a reality that isn't true. When he first got involved with the mother, it was a paradise, but she left, and he drowned in his dream. The people who take advantage of the handicapped adore him (to get him to be a poster child for the cause) then abuse him (what he is subjected to in his new role) then later ignore (forget) about him. The father realizes these people are hypocrites, so he will no longer stand idly by. It is now time for them to deal with him. In the end, as he is about to pass on, he tells his son to seize the day because he (the father) will no longer be around to look out for him, but he will live on as long as the son does live life to the fullest. After I came up with this, I took a closer look at the cover. I do see a right lower leg, but I am still unsure about the left.

What's scary is that I thought this post was going to be *longer*

Someone mentioned that they wanted to know what ACOS sounded like in surround sound... well, to be honest, I can't hear anything different... I only have a dorm room for the environment, but I have Bose 301 fronts and Bose 100 for the rear speakers... and movies sound awsome through the system... I actually hear little difference w/ Dolby ProLogic on... I do think it sounds better w/ hall mode than w/o the rear (obviously, more speakers, more of a submersion effect) but nothing special... sorry... -- +----------------------------+---------------+---------------------+ | We can learn from the past | Dream Theater | Michael Burstin | | But those days are gone +---------------+ Brandeis University | | We can hope for the Future | A Change Of +---------------------+ | But there may not be one | Seasons | Here we go STEELERS | +----------------------------+---------------+---------------------+ For info about Dream Theater, finger mikeb@cs.brandeis.edu http://www.cs.brandeis.edu/~mikeb/home.html

Hey kiddies. I need a favor!

There's a rock station here in Burlington called WIZN "The Wizard," 106.7. Before today, I just thought they were OK. But, last night, they played "Lakeside Park" from Rush, a song you just never hear on the radio. Then, today, I called to request some DT. The DJ (I think his name was Mike) told me that he'd love to play some, but it's not on the playlist. (He did play some Rush for me, though.) Here's what he told me - If enough of us call, during a weeknight, when the music director or someone is there, they might play some. (The station just earned another few points with me - they just played 8 Rush songs in a row! Eight!) So, here's the plan:

    1) Those of you in the Burlington area, e-mail me directly. We'll choose a good night to call, and just swamp the poor bastards with DT requests. 2) Those of you that aren't from the Burlington area - even if you're not in this time zone - e-mail me, too. I'll tell you what dorm to say you're calling from, so it sounds like you're listening, too. Enough requests, often enough, and we just might get DT on their regular playlists. 3) Those of you out of the area, experiencing similar problems with DT on the radio, we'll call your stations and start a nationwide crusade - maybe even worldwide (!) - to get DT on the radio.

Cool idea, huh? They don't give these graduate fellowships to chimps, you know. I get paid to think of this sort of shit.

Richie - you better be the first to write! And where's my Echolyn CD, you bastard? :) Have fun studying!

Awaiting an overflowing in-box, Chris - the leader of the new revolution (I don't know. It sounds cool.)

Although this post is in my wife's name (she is the computer person in the house), I am the PROGRESSIVE MUSIC NUT! Unfortunately being from Memphis, the first time I had the opportunity to hear them was on RAPTV (a.k.a. MTV, haha). I knew from the first note that these guys were good! Very good! Being the ultimate fan of RUSH, YES, UK, ELP, King Crimson. etc...and anyone else associated with progressive jazz/rock, I feel that I know what I am talking about. (Hell, you could call me the ultimate DT fan since I have a majesty tattoo)

First, Kev has to have his space, whether we like it or not. I have his demo and I must say that it is kind of "dark", but being a musician myself I can understand someone having to express himself and not worry about dollar signs.

Although they felt they didn't have control over the production of I&W, it was blended well in my opinion. On Awake(even with Kev) and ACOS they seem to be going in different directions with their sounds. Don't get me wrong, you just don't realize how much I admire these guys. Perhaps with a producer such as Terry Brown they would be able to get the sounds to satisfy and blend together. No offense to Derek but he just lays down the textures.

I don't understand why they WASTED so much valuable time on the covers. I would personally have rather heard DT material (instrumentals I & II, for example).

I have too much to say so I will let it go at this for now.
