Well, I went to Newbury's today to get ACoS (big surprise) and have
listened to it about 10 times w/in the past few hours...

First reactions... Sounds awsome... I love the new instrumental
beginnings... I still do sing most of hte DoE lyrics to alot of
parts, even though I have heard the new version for the past few weeks
on the 2 ACoS shows that I have...

One thing that I think was wrong was the lyrical change made most
recently removing "mercy fuck" for sympathy... As I said many times
before, I don;'t think that using fuck in a song is too bad if it fits
the context (as in Operation: Mindcrime "25 bucks a fuck") and I think
it fits the context of the song... I still almost cringe when I hear
sympathy said in the song... even though of the 2 other versions of
ACoS that I have w/ the new version, only one has fuck... I also
always find myself singing mercy fuck to the song...

I mean, I don't follow the logic of changing it... its not like they
have to worry about a radio station censoring it... I mean, who is
going to play a 23 min song...

Other comments... I think that they have really outdone themsevlves
here... I love the new sound of the song... the added crunch where
needed... I still have to get used tothe new speed of the lyrics
(especially wher ethe lyrics are slower than before) I also like the
new harmonies on some portions of the lyrics...

I am also finally glad that I can read the lyrics, instead of trying
to figure out WTF the lyrics are in the part "life goes off the beaten
track" (you don't know how long I was tryiong to figure out "life goes
on, they all beat in ???? was supposed to mean")

Lets see... any other comments... none that I can think of about the
    song...

I am still undecided about the front cover... I definatly thing I
like the I&W & Awake covers better... but this one is interesting,
and better than alot of the boring ones out there...

I also love that we got mentioned in the liner notes... I am realyl
starting to thing that someone else is here from the band, rather than
just getting Ytsejam off to the side (If I'm correct, hi John, John,
Mike, James, and/or Dereck *grin*) Also, if I'm correct, how about
having Electra changing the link on their DT page to my DT page to be
    correct... *grin*

Finally, about the covers gig... well, I can't say much about
them... I've had the entire gig on tape for some time now, so I am
familiar w/ the material, although this recording (obviously) is MUCH
clearer... Anyway, I have homework to do, so I think I've spent
    enough time here for now...

Oh, one last thing, as the portion is coming onto my CD player... am
I the only one that hears Erotomania in the portions from around 2:45
    until around 3:30 or so...

Okay first of all... A Change of Seasons...

Today is the 19th of September. Finally!!! But unfortunately I had to work all day today and didn't get to pick up the CD until 6PM tonight.

Get this... There are 3 music stores at my local shopping mall. I couldn't find ACoS at the first 2 stores I walked into. The staff said that they've never even heard of Dream Theater before. I was getting worried. Then I walked into the third store. It was an "HMV". YES!!!! They had it right there in the 'New Releases' section. It was $13.99 CDN. I was so excited. I was telling the cashier about how long I've been waiting for this CD. The guy tells me that he's never heard of Dream Theatre. He says, "What are they, an alternative band?". I say, "Well I really can't describe them but they're sort of like Metal and Progressive Rock." He didn't look too interested. He looked disgusted. Then he tells me that I'm like the 4th person to buy this CD all day and it was like 6PM. What?! Hasn't anybody heard of Dream Theater before. I mean... they only sold 4 ACoS CDs all day?! Oh well.

In YTSEJAM #961 Heath Augustover asked how everybody discovered Dream Theater. This is how I discovered DT. I was reading the National Midnight Star (TNMS) which is the Rush equivalent of the YtseJam. This was back in March. Some people were writing about how great DT was. I decided to take a chance on 'Images & Words'. I was very impressed. A week later I bought "Awake". That's when I really became a DT fan. A few days later, I bought everything else, that is... "Live it Tokyo video", "WDADU", "Live at the Marquee". Basically, in less than 2 weeks I bought all the DT stuff. I was hooked. I love this band.

It's been a little while since I received my copy of Cygnus (thanks Mike!), and I've been meaning to make some comments about it for anyone who's interested, so here it goes.

First, I was pleased to find that I was one of the lucky people to receive a free videotape with the CD. The video that I got contains assorted appearances of Dream Theater on eMpTyV Europe's Headbanger's Ball. There's some really cool stuff on the tape, probably the coolest being some short excerpts from the "Uncovered" gig. I would like to publicly thank Mike Bahr for coming through with free videotapes for a few lucky Cygnus recipients.

Now, on to the CD. I'm not an expert on bootlegs, and I won't pretend otherwise. However I do have a few CD bootlegs of various bands, ranging from stuff recorded in the mid-70's to the early 90's. I know that, based on the bootlegs I have heard, older shows tend not to sound as good as newer shows (which only makes sense). Thus I was a bit skeptical when Mike claimed that the sound quality of Cygnus was "Beyond comparison. Higher than Oakland '92 and Pinkpop." Now I happen to own the first bootleg to which he referred, i.e. Rush 'n' Roulette '92, and it sounds excellent. I think that the sound quality of Cygnus is very good for a bootleg from 1978, but it definitely does NOT sound as good as Rush 'n' Roulette '92. Also I noticed, as many people have, that there are a few places where small parts of songs are missing due to drop-outs on the master tape, which I don't believe Mike mentioned when he was advertising the CD.

I'm still very happy with the CD. I think that the show sounds good enough (even with the drop-outs) that it deserved to be put on CD, and I'm very glad that Mike Bahr undertook the project. The sound quality is only a little lower than what I expected (although I didn't really expect it to be as good as Rush 'n' Roulette), and the drop-outs aren't that big a deal. I would have still paid $23 for the CD if I had known exactly what it would sound like. However, I am a bit unhappy with Mike Bahr for misleading us into thinking that Cygnus would sound a bit better than it actually does. As I said, I'm not disappointed with the CD, but I can see how some people who ordered it might be.

Anyway, that's my (rather lengthy) two cents, for what it's worth.

I know I will probably be one of only a few hundred people to do this, but now that I have purchased the ACoS CD, I'd like to post a few things about A Change of Seasons that I either particularly liked or didn't like.

    Things I liked:

    1. The new intro: This is a much better way to start the song than the way it starts on the Vocalist Audition Tapes version or the Dance of Eternity version.

    2. They put back in the line "We can hope for the future, but there may not be one." I think that the line before it ("We can learn from the past, but those days are gone") sounds incomplete without it.

    3. The way James speaks and sings each line from "Preparing for her flight" up to "I said, 'I love you ...'" and then just speaks the word "good-bye".

    4. Probably a million other little things that I will notice little by little as I listen to the song more and more.

    Things I didn't like:

    1. Kevin Moore's awesome keyboard playing is gone. Derek does a fine job, but there were a few things in particular that Kevin played on this song that I thought were awesome and are no longer present.

    2. I was extremely unhappy to find that they cut one of my favorite lyrical passages by Dream Theater or any other band, namely:

"Every day there's a constant reminder of all the pleasures we shared together Love is not just a passing word It's a state of heart that goes on forever"

    and also the passage

"I stood outside in the rain for us I tried to work out all the pain for us I sat alone and took the blame for us My mind has torn and gone insane for us Innocent sinner Repeat offender Promiscuous promiser Faith lender Indecisive decisions . . ." (etc.)

There are actually two more lines in that last passage, but I'm not sure what James is saying in them.

    3. I like the arrangement of the "Crimson Sunset" section better in the Vocalist Audition and Dance of Eternity versions than in the new version. They are similar, but the new version has some changes in the lyrics. The lyrics in the new version are also pretty cool, and have roughly the same meaning as those in the old versions, so I may grow to like the new ending better after I hear it more.

That's my two cents about A Change of Seasons. I bet if we add my two cents to everyone else's who posts opinions about ACoS, we would have at least a dollar. OK, so that wasn't very funny, but it's the best I could come up with after spending several hours staring at a computer screen.

The live stuff is also great...hats off to the engineers and mixers and the other behind the scenes people...the sound quality is excepional. You can even hear the bass :D. I just picked it up today. I had lunch at 9:50 in the morning, and had my friend drive me to Musicland. We got there about two and a half seconds before they opened the doors. It was cool. I immediately purchased all of their copies (all two of them), and one tape to listen to on the way home. Nothing short of Mahler's 2nd, 5th, or 6th has ever had a better opening than A Change of Season. Hell of bad-ass. As for the guy selling the Subconscious, I think it's fine, it just shouldn'y be done on the mailing list.

    hey people

& now for something completely different--

proving once again how effective the internet is at totally wasting time: a friend told me about this web page that will produce anagrams of any word or phrase you type in. it's pretty cool when you anagram your name and find all this shit with hidden meanings in there; so, being a relatively new 'jammer, i tried out the phrase "dream theater" and, at no extra charge, here are some of the best ones (but by no means all of the ones) it came up with.

red meat hater retard hate me mr. death eater hatred tear me adhere matter retreated ham three made art (a rush reference?)

fucked up, huh? check out the band members' names: john petrucci conjure pitch (that's awesome) chronic upjet (for all you potheads) jot epic churn (songwriting style?) june crop itch (no comment)

mike portnoy (these are all cool) top minor key money trip ok piety or monk? my porno kite try my p-nookie!

derek sherinian naked rinse heir (kinky) drink anise here (again, one for the organic substance abusers) drier nine shake (meaningless)

james labrie (sorry dude, these are lame) jailer beams biles ear jam (nasty)

john myung (alas, nothing works for you, man)

bonus: kevin moore evoke minor (interesting musical vibe) eve room ink (songwriting setting for "eve"? cool) venom ire ok (yeah, he's bitter all right) invoke more (whatever)

ok, now, pointless as that was, you people _have_ to get on the net, go to this anagram page, and enter "images and words." there are almost 1600 anagrams from that (that's only the limit of the program; there are more), and they all fucking mean something. it's scary how oddly thought-provoking some of the stuff that comes up is--

drama's wide song mends radio wags media sword sang dogma rises dawn

(and my personal favorites so far) dawn's mad orgies grimed swans ado sadism-drawn-ego (fuck yeah!)

but there are so many more-- it is seriously very cool, you must do this. give it a shot, see what you can find in your own name, or your friends' names, or anything. it's addictive, and your free time will vanish. the address is:

    <http://www.infobahn.com/pages/anagram.html>

sorry about the length. hope i provided a cool break from all the ACoS praise (i thought it was insanely cool; title track kept reminding me of ELP on steroids... plus the old guy on the inside cover reminds me of keith emerson for some reason).

(and to all you progressive rock fans with seriously sick senses of humor, mr. bungle's new album _Disco Volante_ comes out oct. 10. for the unbungled, the debut album is the most obscene, hilarious, and musically brilliant avant-circus-jazz-funk-prog-metal-fest ever. for us bungle fans, oct. 10 will be pottie time.)

    i'm gone.

hey there folx, i was sitting in Chemistry class. the prof was saying something about a test next week. needless to say, i wasn't exactly paying 100% attention to him. i *wanted* ACoS! bad. so i pack up my stuff and sit for another 15 minutes. finally, the prof says he's done; and i'm out the door. i more or less run to my car (a full 15 mins away) and jet to the closest Best Buys (btw, for those of you in the Northern VA area, the new Fairfax Parkway 7100 to I-66 is open and quite nice :)

so i finally (12 mins later) get there and go directly to the DT bin. ahhhhhhhh sweat release. i grab ACoS and the SM single as well, look for Fate Warning's Chasing Time; no dice :( pick up NIN the Downward Spiral (i like the remixes of Piggy and self destruction better on FDTS. oops, wrong list ;)

then i mosy on over to the car audio section and procede to drive the salesman away by blasting +live+. bored, i pay for the CDs and hurry out to my car, rip open ACoS and begin playing it...

    --------------------------------meat-of-my-post--------------------------------

    I. ACoS after 2 listen's i'm still stunned. i like the new beginning, all soft and classical, but it's not the same up-in-your-face-million-note-scale-thingy that the Subcon version is. it will take some getting used to. it's a good thing though.

drums: i absolutely *LOVE* Mike's snare!!!!! YES! *THAT* is what a snare should sound like! i just can't stand those damned trashcans that metal and rock drummers so adore. yuk! gimme a nice, crisp, bright piccolo snare anyday. the rest of Mike's sound is kool, too ;)

i'll always sing the "PLEASE DON'T GO!" part. and the "I gave you all the world" part. maybe theycould have sung the "original" part under the new part? too bad i can't sing...i like the vocal harmonies and overall KJ's voice is great. i swear it's Sebastian Bach in some parts ;) there's a few places where he could've/should've sung higher, but it's their song, not mine :)

the ending is kool. sam as the beginning, i like the Subcon version's suddenness better, but it'll grow. the ending passage absolutely REAKS of Fates. not a bad thing, mind you.

II. Uncovered 2.FFaF/LLB (gotta love those abbrs. ;) : ummm, ok. i'm not a huge elton fan. maybe i'll play this for my gf's mom who is.

3.PS: this song rocks! i've heard the original once (a friend's dad was a roadie/guitar tech for Deep Purple waaaaaaaaay) but DT roolz this!

4.tR/ALS/tSRtS: heheh pretty kool. i was once really big into Zep. dad will like this :)

5.tBM: ahhh K-Billy's Super Sounds of the 70's (and early 80's) doesn't sound better. mom will hate the BR (she's a die-hard Queen fan). gotta love KJ's vocals on LTS!

III. art i like it. kudos to Mike for the idea. overall, anyone else think this is a "Mike Portnoy Disc"?? he's involved in every step: lyrics, music, art, production...speaking of Mike, what's the deal with his left arm? his right one is all muscular and flexed (like he twisted it towards the front to show his flaming heart tattoo) but his left is all straight and non-muscular looking. just a thought.

IV. Derek he's gonna fit nicely into DT's recording lineup. different than Moore (of course). but different is good. anyone else think Derek looks like one of the Red Hot Chili Pecker's guitarists (the newest one?)?? i swear he does :)

woah. sorry for the length. more later. maybe...

I feel much different since my last post. I've since played ACOS on my home stereo (100 watt w/Bose 401's) and wow! The production is incredible. I've really never heard anything so clear. Almost too clear. The acoustic thing that bookends the song is really awe-inspiring. Wow.

Secondly, I'd like to say that I'm really touched that DT mentioned us. I really am. I guess this means that they wouldn't have done it if we hadn't kept pestering them? I'm glad they pay attention, and I'm glad that they took the time (sorry, that wasn't intentional) to make a CD just for the fans. Way cool.

BTW, the snare is too dry and the kick drum is too thin. :)

I still don't know which version I like better. The old one is more familiar, but I'm trying not to let that influence me. I was trying to sing along with the new one, but everthing is so different. I love it.

Better keep this short. It's gonna be a long 'Jam.

    Happy listening! L. Glenn Waterfield

I'm a Shadowfax fan. Where did you hear this from? Thats TERRIBLE news! Losing Charlie Bisharat and G.E. Stinson was bad enough, but Chuck Greenburg dying? I dont see how we can have any semblance of Shadowfax without him. First Jeremy Brett, now Chuck Greenburg. What a rotten weekend it was...

I got it today!! It rocks!!! oh yeah!!! The intro is just AMAZING!! It sounds A LOT like the intro from ULTIMA 6. I just am wondering if the changed "mass fuck" to "sympathy" by resampling it, or re-doing it entirely? And is the BIG MEDLEY a mixture of parts of al those six songs, or did they do it in their entirity and made it together in one song for the EP?

ANXIOUSLY AWAITING ACCOUSTIC DREAMS!!!!!!!!!!!! (here's to the only month with TWO Dream Theater CDS released) James

NEWSFLASH!!!!! Derek Sherinian and Dave Navarro of the Chilli Peppers - separated at birth !!!! THINK ABOUT IT.

I love the pictures of the band. James waving his hands around is cool.

Love the song - much better than DoE. This may have been mentioned before since some have complained a little about the production, but does anyone else find ACoS a little thin?!? I&W was very up front and in your face - this tune seems to lack (for want of a better term) the same sonic presence. Make sense?

J.P.'s 7 string is nowhere near as obnoxious as AWAKE. I like it here (and I liked it there).

Coolest part for me? All the voices swirling around at about 9:30. James is really hitting his mark. Oh yeah, and at about 18:40 - very CIaWish, which makes me want to cry since I love it so. And the Wah Wahs at 19:30. Again, very 6:00 and CIaWish.

Man, the production on the covers is GREAT. Hats off on that.

That's it. Accept that Derek and Navarro really ought to check their family trees.

Does anyone else feel priviledged to be getting ACoS at the same time as everyone else? I've only read a few posts before today of people with advanced copies and for once it's nice to be getting something by DT along with everyone else. Up here in Canada we rarely get a chance to see DT so it feels nice.

To JennieBear: I think you should read that guy's letter again. He said he doesn't know anyone that DRUMS like Portnoy (not LIKES Portnoy).

I understand that having your favourite band insulted is not pleasant, but after reading Jose's letter, doesn't anyone feel the least bit guilty for hammering him? From the looks of it, he's located in Brasil and hasn't completely grasped the English language. There, there, Jose....

I have spent the majority of the day enjoying ACOS. I love it! I think the production is great and the live stuff sounds so f'in good. ACOS is incredible! I have only heard the Subcon version and I have to say that I did not pay too much attention to it because the sound is not that great. So this new version is the one I will base all judgements on. My favorite section is "V. Another World". I think James has never sang better on any song than in this section. The line that starts "No Matter what, don't let him be. Let's feed upon his misery." gave me chills right off the bat. I also think the harmonies are bitching, I have always wished they would do more of them. I think that Derek does a great job, and I personally like his soloing style more than Kevin's. I know I am not speaking for the majority but that's my opinion. I am worried about Derek's writing skills, I guess we will have to wait.

I like the Elton covers alot, the DP cover kicks ass, the LZ covers are good but me not being a fan of LZ, I will have a hard time liking these even if Kiss did them (my all time favorite band). The medley is incredible! I think they did a great job of switching from song to song. The Journey part is very hypnotizing! I do wish James would have wailed out "Carry on, well will always remember......" I love that part!

Any way, I love this CD and I hope to also see some interesting interpretations of the cover art.

    Enjoy one and all!

OK...enough is enough you guys. Anyone who got ACOS before the release date and listened to it is, sorry, an asshole. Same goes for the rest of you who live in the New Jersey area and got to see DT after their Europe tour. If you were able to attend a Mike Portnoy and/or a John Petrucci clinic........you too, except Tim Lodge..thanks for the video.

And while I am at it... HAIRBALL...if you have access to what it sounds like you have access to then you are on my list too. Sorry to be so brutal. Also, since I am still trying to get the DT Fan Club send me the shit I paid for...anyone who is a member and is getting regular mailings you are, yes, an asshole too. ......We all know Jose-who-hates-Rush is one too.

I don't mean to be petty but if you don't live in Portland, Oregon like I do.....asshole!

To paraphrase from an earlier post...Petrucci and other musicians "play it safe" by playing their solos exactly like the studio recording...as a guitartist I can say with total certainty that it is much easier to" wing it" on a solo than play every thing note for note as it was recorded...especially DT songs . Anyone who disagrees..............yep...asshole.

Ken the Slave...thanks for explaining the "slave" part.....had me worried...:)

Members of BLIND Melon...total assholes. I have no tolerance for empty headed

criticism of the world's greatest band.

Thanks for letting me get this out of my system......

Warren in Oregon Warren... not a member of the DT fan Club Warren...without ACOS Warren... without a CD recorder Warren...I bought some more beer Warren...spelled Rhythm correctly this time Hi BABS...(it is in the mail as of tomorrow)BTW..have you seen Stimpy's cousin Sven yet??
