Well, I was introduced to DT the old fashioned way. A friend of mine
bought I&W and loved it. Since we trade tapes of our new faves every once in

immediately and had to go out and buy myself a copy on CD!

ARTWORK: The actual CD is very cool, the rest doesnt look that great yet,
but it doesnt seem to fit yet either, the cover doesnt look busy enough :)

UNCOVERED: Alot better than I expected. James does a very good Steve
Perry impression, though that song could have been just a bit longer.
_Perfect Strangers_ is the only vocal track I hadn't heard before, and,
to echo someone else's question, "Is the original anywhere near that
good?" I really like the Elton John covers, and the same with the Zep
for the most part. _In The Flesh?_ was done quite well, although i dont
think that anyone could ever do as well as Roger Waters did... The
Genesis cover was the least impressive, IMHO... the music is good, but
the vocals are kinda bland IMHO
Oh yeah, reguarding the Dixie Dregs, are they that good too?

ACoS ITSELF: first off, there is now another "Another ..." song (Day,
Hand, Won, World). And secondly, I just simply dont like the snare.
almost to the point that it (IMHO) ruins all of the drums in the song.
Thirdly, Fatez Warning named Part I of _The Ivory Gate of Dreams_ [21:25]
    _Innocence_...

0:23-46 - the dual acoustics are cool...
2:48+ - Deep Purple? (the keys)
5:45-6:10 - very cool music beneath James...
6:58-10:40? - _III. Carpe Diem_ is still awesome w/o _PLEASE DON'T GO!!!_
9:27-46 - the spoken echo of the singing is very cool
9:47 - however, James says "goodbye" very blandly... as opposed to doing
it like "well" [...we're not laughing] from _Scarred_...
10:06 - Yes, _PLEASE DON'T GO!!!_ is missing, but you can hear James
            kinda screaming beneath everything...
10:40 - this transition is much improved
12:35-38, 12:42-45 & 12:49-53 are just wacked. IMHO they hurt the flow...
17:01+ - I like the bluesy guitar soloing...
18:35 - this change still catches me by surprise... very cool
18:49 - the keys fill and ensuing solo are cool...
20:57-21:02 - "the offbeaten track" ... who'd have thunk it...
21:19-52 - the vocal style here seems to... i dont know, but its not that
great... though i like the singing of the "Gather ye rosebuds
               while ye may" sample...
21:53-22:15 - good climax. good ending. still miss the DON'T GO! bit.

oh well, "I realize there's no turning back"... ACoS is here, and quite
    impressive.

Overall, the song rules. I currently like _Metropolis_ better, but....
The first time i heard it it was at 9:15 am (the first store opened at
9am) when most of the people in my dorm were sound asleep, so I couldn't
    play it too loud...

...than I thought existed and, of course, ACOS impressions.

It's been an interesting afternoon. I left for lunch at 1pm so I could get
my copy of ACOS at the the local CD store, and I brought it back into
my office since I wanted to check the liner out. I hadn't really gotten
a chance to listen to it, but a co-worker of mine saw the CD as he was
kidding me about my DT cap. (He knows I love DT's music.) He checked out
my ACOS CD and wants to borrow it "as soon as I'm done with it. :)

Apparently, I loaned him my I&W some months back, and he really liked it.
In fact, he bought it a short time after he returned it. I'm gonna have to
loan him WDADU and Awake next to tide him over. :)

Just when I thought it couldn't get a little more interesting, my project
manager saw ACOS in my office during a quick chat at 3pm. He commented that
he likes parts of I&W (why he thinks part of it are a bit too much thrash,
I'll never understand), then proceeded to check ACOS out. He didn't ask to
borrow it, but he did mention that he liked Elton John's _Funeral for
a Friend - Love Lies Bleeding_. May have to let him borrow it so I can
    score some points. :) :) :)

    Just thought I'd share this.

As for the ACOS CD, I totally love the rendition of ACOS itself. I also
like the Elton John cover. Not too crazy for the Zep cover from a lyrical
standpoint. Is it just me, or is James not singing at all throughout this
song? I'm listening to "The Big Medley" right now.

Has anyone else noticed that the mix on this is much more balanced than
_Awake_? I mean, Derek's keyboards can be heard along with Mike's drums,
    JP's guitars, and JM's bass.

This CD is total proof of how good DT is. Now, I'm almost sorry I picked up
Echolyn's _As the World_. I'm not gonna get a chance to listen to it for
    weeks. :)

Hey all, (BTW, no real DT content) I may be making a few of these "catchin' up" quipps in this 'Jam, only because if I don't do it now, I will forget...plus I am too lazy to write it down on paper and then transcribe it in a hour or so, so here goes for "Catchin' Up (I)...": Someone -- Menhaz, I think, sorry if I misspelled it -- mentioned not flaming other types of music here, i.e. death metal. I made an anti-death metal comment a while back, so I feel his comment was aimed towards me. My point still stands, however...death metal bands have little or no talent. This is not unsubstantiated. When I mentioned the sampler disc to a few of my friends the other day, the really wanted to hear it. I said, "But they have no talent!!!" One replied, "I know, but their not supposed to. You're supposed to MASH to them!" The others were in consensus. BTW, these guys are all huge DT fans. In fact, the one who made the comment has seen them twice in concert. Little add-in: since he and one other mentioned keeping opened minds musically, if anyone out there likes Rage Against The Machine (I like them, but not the vocalist...he can't sing!!!), then check out Stuck Mojo and Orange 9mm. You'll love 'em! Sorry for the lack of DT content.

If that message to Skadz got on the list, my apologies. Watch that Cc: line, you fool.. <whap!>

Anyways, it's time for another impression of ACOS!

    Frankly, I'm a little disappointed.

Not that it's still about the best song I've ever heard; it's just that I like a lot of the old one better.

    Things I do like:

The acoustic intro and outro - adds a nice effect The entire intro - much heavier Derek's keys - new style the new heavier parts in general the new lyrics guitar/bass doubling

    Things I don't like:

The tempo - it's TOO SLOW! Too much Dead Poets Society (never liked the movie) The Inevitable Summer - I like the DoE/SubCon version of this better - more lightspeed guitar/keys interaction Kev's keyboard noodlings James's rythym on The Crimson Sunset - it seems a little off/strange to me No "PLEASE DON'T GO!"

This could be just because I'm so used to the Subconscious version of it (is this the same as the DoE version?), and I'm not expecting changes. The new version is growing on me, but I still like the tempo of the old one much more.

As for the rest of the CD

Funeral/LLB - Maybe my favorite of the covers, but I'm a big keys fan. Very cool intro. Perfect Strangers - Not bad. I don't remember the original, though. Led Zep - Very cool. Not knowing *all* Zeppelin, I didn't recognize it really until TSRTS, but it's still neat. The Big Medley - Very cool, although I can't hear James singing too much Roger Waters stuff... the Carry On/Bohemian is really wicked... aside from the fact that it's a major break in the song's meaning/flow, Lovin' Touchin' Sqeezin is cool, and Turn it On Again is rather ironic as a closer.

Of course, I'm probably being a blasphemer by taking it *out* of the CD player today. (Hey, I had to play my new Tori CD too.......)

All in all, very cool, and definitely worth skipping class to go buy...

Does anyone ever send these people info, or does Ken just catch those requests that he can? Just wondering... ('cause I just did).

    (ACOS)

On "another" note, I think that the cover/innersleeve art concept is really cool. I also think that the ACOS production could've been a little better. Do you think that the "coffee-can" sounding snare is Prater's way of getting back at Portnoy for saying all those bad things?

ACOS is on the 5th or 6th round on the CD player at work now... I'll play as much as I can on the way home, too !>)>

And about movies: go see _Desperado_, then get the soundtrack... both are really great!

Thanks to Steve, Chris and Dave. Yes, I'll spell it the other way and I'll find out what Frank liked. We've had the discussion before, but it's important to remind people that nature of the business at hand.

Enough babble. I just got back from the Portnoy drum clinic. It totally, completely and irrevicably kicked my ass!! The guy is incredible. Not only did he take the time (pardon the pun) to go through all the parts that people couldn't figure out, but he spent 15 great minutes jamming with two local players. He can make everyone sound good.

I caught up with him afterwards. The guy is just too cool. After playing his balls off for fifty-so minutes (including a double bass example that ranks up there with Lombardo and Paul), the guy spent the next half-hour signing everything that people could put in front of him. Kudos go to Buke, the guy that put the whole thing on. It's a really cool sign when music store owners will take losses in income to pay for true talents to come and spread the gospel. Anyway, Mike was great. I told him I was his "friendly-neighborhood-one-man-local-chapter- of-the-ytsejammers," and he immediately asked me for a request. He would like, if possible, for anyone going to any of the other drum clinics to bring him an as up to date as possible listing of the past month's ytsejam posts. It was cool to find out he reads the stuff. It was even cooler to find that he WANTS to read the stuff. He says "Hi!" to all, and hopes to get some good bathroom-reading material ASAP. To top off a totally excellent day, the lounge music for the clinic was ACoS (just the covers). Half the audience was stunned by the fact that a new EP was out. The other half had if with them for signing. Someone mentioned before that it was cool of DT to release an EP that few people, besides the fans, would want. I have to second that. It's not radio-friendly, but it was (and is) a great piece of music for those that are "sophisticated" enough to buy it. O.K. O.K.- gossip! The best we heard at the clinic was that Kevin is bald, and John Myung just got married. Boy, all this excitement!!

To be honest (aren't we all ;) when I first head PMU, I thought it rocked! It was so cool but I thought it was an old european group like Future Maid or something. Then when I was working for Musicland (yes 'that' Musicland) we got in I&W. The asst mgr said that this was a follow up to WDADU. I bought both that day and have loved them since. I bought Awake the Dec after it cam out. I just didn't know it had been released. I was at work when a coworking mentioned he liked them and that they had a new album out. I left work within minutes, (pissing off my boss!) and owned Awake withing 15 minutes of first hearing of it. :) ACoS.... Best Buy opened at 10:00... Dave bought ACoS at 10:01! :)

I haven't heard one good thing about Mike Portnoy's choice in snare for ACoS. I think it sounds kind of rad, almost like Helmet. Well damn, I don't know if that high pitched snare is on Helmet or Tool, it's been awhile since I've listened to something other than DT. But still, that point aside, I don't think anything is better than the snare on Awake. I do like that crisp quality though.

All right. Let's go with this thread, here.

I work for a college radio station called WMCX. On the weekends, they do special block shows. some friends of mine had done a heavy metal show every Saturday. I had heard mention of DT in several places, and even heard some songs, but never really played attention, just passing them up as some other Metal band. But, then, that fateful day early this year, at the end of March, or the beginning of April, I went to the Whiz to buy a walkman for myself. when I got into the car with my friend, we turned on the college station like we always do, and I heard this amazing drum solo going on. As a musician, I immediately went into analyze mode. this guy sounded like Neil Peart of Rush, but I don't know this solo. Wait, this isn't Neil. Who the hell is this? He's good. where did this come from? As it turns out, I was hearing a live version of Ytsejam from a bootleg cd he had. I had my friend, who was also amazed, pull over to a phone. I called the station and demanded the name of the band. When they told me it was Dream theater, I went to the store and bought Awake, IW and WDADU all in the same day. Listening to them, I found my heroes of the nineties, in a world where grunge and nonmusicianship rules, I found a purpose to keep playing. And in a musical world where keyboard players seem to be doing only techno music, Kevin More became my hero. So, DT has renewed my faith in talent, and in a way, kept me from giving up my own musical dream. Thanks, Fred, if you are on the list.

Reading over the yesterday's TWO jams... :) I just have to say WHAT A FEELING!!! I must admit that I haven't been on here all that long but it's so cool to see everyone so pumped about ACoS! Almost every message ended with a "I'm going to get it" ot "I'm listening to it!" And to think that we're all thanked! I agree with the jammer who said that we should write the record company to release the Ronnie Scott gig in it's complete form. Anyone know that address?? Speaking of blowing ears and speakers... I work at a hotel 800 reservation center and had listened to ACoS so loud that for the first hour I could hardly hear any of the callers!! To all the audio philes out there... yes I know I can permently damage my hearing, I know. I just had to... Also, if you think about it, it's not _that_ funny, but it's cool how everyone is so suprised that you can actually hear bits and pieces of Myung's work on this album! :)

Oh well.. enough babbling... back to the reviews! :)

One last thing... then I'll shut up for a while! :)

I think that "sympathy" was used well in ACoS. I just don't see how "fuck" would have fit. Much less "massive fuck"??? I never heard the version where James sings it that way, but if they had to change the Subcon version they changed it well.

Ok I lied, one more thing... listen careful to ACoS at 17:08. Mike does a little roll from Bombay Vindaloo. Neat. And the guitar slide at 10:40 makes me shiver.. that's the reason I stared playing guitar.. to make that sound!!! :)

all right. I'm the bitchy person about the queen song and Derek. Can we all stop ripping me now? I appologize. I amy care but others don't. And it isn't that big of a deal to me, as long as Derek plays the DT stuff right. And he'd better. :)

You can find that version on the YesYears box set. The CD version is preety steep in price, but if you like Yes, it's good to have. The original version of Heart of the sunrise with Rick Wakeman, the good keyboardist, is on there as well as Tony K's butcher job. You don't want to know what he does to it. Let's put it this way, the guitar does most of the keyboard solos. arrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh. Sucks. If you can't handle the part, don't play in the band.

    Hi there,

Here some news from me again. First I have to tell that the bucket on ACoS isn't blue but yellow. Sorry guys but you have to remember that I wrote this on a friday morning at a quarter past seven. I even didn't have any coffee than. I had to tell you this, although I think everyone has seen it yet.

    > Anyway, I'm willing to manage a dub site list if anyone else is willing > to do tapes in addition to me. I'm only going to make a few tape copies > of my CD (#68 cause I owe Mike one :). I don't have a great stereo, but > it will make decent copies. If you want one, e-mail me. I'm located in > San Jose, California, and if other dub sites open, I'll handle Northern > California.

Add me to that list as well. My copy is somewhere in the 400 (I think it's #493). But if people overhere are interested I am willing to open a dub-site for Europe. It would be strange if people aren't interesting about the stuff. So if you want a cassette copy of Subconscious, please let me know I am willing to make a copy.

First send me an e-mail to one of the addresses mentioned below.

Later on you can send me a ninety minutes tape, stamps*, for return postage, a jiffy envelope (or something sturdy to ship it in -- like a casette mailer), and of course an address to return it to.

    * I collect stamps so it isn't a problem when you send me unused ones from your own country. Make sure they're a bit interested. So don't send those ordinairy heads of queens, kings or presidents etc.

It makes me mad when I read people don't like Rush. I think they're great. I am into them since the All The Worlds A Stage album. I can't understand the fact that people on this list think they suck. Man I think you have to be nuts. How can you listen to DT, without getting the Rush simularity.

    > Marillion's Fugazi: EVERYBODY here says that Misplaced Childhood > was better than this album. Well, the same thing as for Metallica, I like > the second album (Fugazi) a lot more than the third (MC). MC got one of > the most powerful ballads I've ever heard on it (Kayleigh), the other > songs are also quite good, but not as nearly as brilliant as the ones > on Fugazi.

MC has some nice features, but I think you're right Fugazi is the better one. But I think the best ever album made by Marillion, during the Fish period, has to be to my opinion the Real To Reel album. It has the best songs of the first two albums on it, and all played live. The live atmosphere is great and it contains a suburb version of Forgotten Sons. My favourite Marillion album overall has to be Seasons End. It has the highlights of the atmospheric Marillion with songs like King Of Sunset Town, Easter, Seasons End and The Space.

The way I got into DT is rather strange. One of the editors of SI Magazine (which is a Dutch Progressive Magazine I write for as well) told me that the WDaDU album was in the stores for five guilders (between two or three Dollar). I just had read some stuff about DT, and so I bought the album. To be honest I didn't like it that much. The music was nice, but the lyrical part was terrible. About half a year later I&W was released. It wasn't until the release of the Another Day single that I decided to buy I&W. After hearing the album I lost my soul to DT. To interview James last year made a wish come through.

Sorry for the long mail but I had to tell this. Be sure to check Everon, they're great. If you like Rush, and who doesn't, cheque out the English group Summer Indoors. They have a lot Rush influences.

By the way can anyone tell me when the new Magellan album will be released?

    Greetings, Wilco Barg WBG@GSS101.GES.GETRONICS.NL WBG@GESASDSC.NT.GETRONICS.NL

Firstly. I think the debate over whether DT is prog or metal is moot. They are very metalish, but let's not forget that there aren't many metal bands that can do what DT does. So, maybe the appropriate title for DT is progressive metal. The Rush-basher actually had some good points about this, but then again, on the progressive side, DT does a ot of Rush and Yes type stuff, like time signature changes, complex fills and riffs, and other elements of progressive rock. And when James isn't grunging the hell out of his voice, he sings better than most any other singer I have heard. So, they are not just prog rock, and they are not just heavy metal. Let's call them progressive metal. Isn't that a nice compromise?

On a different note, does anyone know what Kevin's and Derek's keyboard setup is? What keyboards and effects and racks are they using? I want to know, because I play keyboards and am always interested in other keyboardists setups, especially when hteir sounds are so awesome like Kevin's and Derek's. And if anyone has some keyboard articles from either person, can they transcribe and mail them to me, please? I want to read them. If you have any answers, send them to the list or to my email account at s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. thanks in advance, and please don't blow this question off. It's important to me.

Can somebody fill me in as to the set list for this uncovered show, top to bottom? I would love to know what they played. and also, I heard somewhere that DT covered Free Will by Rush on a bootleg. where can I get this, and how does it sound? Thanks.

Hi all.. some things to ponder:

    * The Chris Cintron vocalist audition of ACOS is closer to the final version than is the one that is on Subconscious. It's sort of a hybrid, but sound quality suffers. However this *will* be making an appearance on a forthcoming CD, more on that shortly.

    * The cover concept is Portnoy's, but who drew it? It looks like the art of Rob Alexander, best known for drawing covers to fantasy novels by Jordan, Feist, Weis/Hickman, and for art on Magic: The Gathering cards.

    * Anyone want to take over the discography? Damn, I've let that thing get dated. Let me know.

    * We need a vote! I've got the next few CDs planned out. I am moving the release of When Dream and Today Unite forward just a bit (how far is yet to be determined) and postponing Death of a Dictionary until early 1996. After WDATU, due to overwhelming demand, I will release a CD that will contain vocalist auditions, demos, outtakes, errata, unfinished works, unreleased works, and the like. I need to decide on a NAME for it and can't make the choice. My DT-loving friends and I have come up with a few and we want everyone to decide.

    - Antiquities - The Lost Artifacts - Hymns of the Ancients - The Darkest Years (reflecting DT's status during 1987-1991) - Forgotten Lore

    * Acoustic Dreams is, God willing, apparently still on schedule. Nothing "wrong" has happened yet, per se. I should have the CDs by the release date of 9/30/95. I've also got an ulcer.

    * If you have 23 odds and ends on a table, and 22 of them fall off, what do you have left, an odd or an end?

    * Cygnus is both my biggest success and my greatest disappointment. It's outsold Subconscious (750+ copies gone so far) mostly due to me making it available on alt.music.rush... On the other hand, NOBODY disliked Subconscious. And now it seems almost fashionable over on a.m.r. to hate Cygnus, to the point at which people are asking me to stop advertising. A lot of people were expecting album quality, and while Cygnus is well above average for a boot, it falls well short of ATWAS. I guess I can't win... on the bright side, the Jam as a general whole seems to be liking it. I'll say this: that's the last time I ever offer anything to alt.music.rush. I hate to let a few rotten apples spoil the batch, but, well.... they have. Mostly I'm bummed because it's the first time someone's hated something I created (on this great of scale). I was worried that people would hate Subconscious, worried to the point that I was losing sleep as the days counted down toward release, but apparently it was wasted worry. :) Thanks, everyone.

    * A Christmas-flavor Ytsecon out west??! It could happen! I can't say anything about the band being there, but I think we might be able to put this together. So many Jammers are migrating to Phoenix/Tucson or already live here (me, Nathan Bradley, Mark Tedhams, Brian Fieg, Mike Kizer, Hairball) that we could probably collaborate most productively. I wouldn't want to take time away from the studies of college-bound Jammers, so it would have to happen during the holiday break.

    * It's been a long game and you've got 1 life point left. Your opponent's Rack will kill you during your next upkeep if you don't win now. She is at 3 life. She has a swamp, Drudge Skeletons with Unholy Strength on them, and a Hypnotic Specter with Unholy Strength, Creature Bond, and White Ward on it. To make things worse, she has out Circle of Protection: Red and a plains. You have a Farrel's Zealot, a Serra Angel, a Tawnos' Wand, 2 mountains, and a plains, and you have in your hand only two cards: Chaoslace and Lightning Bolt. Kill your opponent before the end of your turn or you lose. What do you do?

    * All of the mis-sorted Cygni have made their way into the hands of their intended owners at last... except one that defied finding. I'm still working with that person so we can determine what happened to her letter! If you are lacking a Cygnus you ordered a while back, let me know and I'll go digging.

    * The band photos on the ACOS liner are excellent. Also, the poor young boy on the front seems to have the great misfortune of being a double-amputee below the knees. If I'm wrong, then where the hell are his feet! He's sitting smack flat in the snow. In other artwork news, the art on the CD itself would have IMO made a better cover, but I like the cover they _did_ use. It's less dark and menacing, and DT needed a bit of a refresher there after LATM and Awake, and the gothic IAW cover.

    * I talk too much.

    Mike Bahr, durnik@indirect.com
