On Trevor Rabin... I think he's an absolute genius! I haven't heard anything

soon! I saw him during the tour for his solo album at Peabody's in The Flats
(Cleveland), the show was amazing! Especially his solo medley of Solly's

Gene... Stabbing Westward's 'Ungod'... I have it. Thought it was pretty cool
when I got it. It grows on me more every time I listen to it! I haven't
heard a peep out of these guys since....
Oh. I was checking my source for boots and cool stuff last weekend while I
was back in Ohio for a friend's wedding. I went in to find out if I could
get a promo copy of ACoS... no luck. I did pick up the single for 'Lie'
which had TLF on it. I love that song! But I think I still like the live
version from LiT better (With that amazing solo after it!).

That does it. What the fuck. How can the song change so much??!! I will pay
if anyone has a good quality boot of the Providence show. They did an
awesome ACOS there that was different from Subcon and different from the
studio version. I'm sure the studio version will be good, but I'm really
glad I have the subcon version. Man. I don't get it. I hope I understand
when the disk is released. I'll be interested to hear what it sounds like
now. Must be quite different from Subcon.
Oh yeah. In case anyone from DT reads this list or anything, I'm really
psyched and thankful for the ACOS EP being released. It's very cool of DT
to do it. It's just that ACOS is one of my favorites and I'm used to the
Subcon version and now it's something else. That's all :).

Because Portnoy's a-fuckin-mazing! I always forget to play air-bass too. I
got caught speeding (and an accompanying ticket :( ) while listening to I&W

I went to Sam Goody last night to check on their release date
for ACOS. I didn't want to, but it's the only music store left in
Columbus, Indiana. :( Anyway, the manager didn't bother to look it
up. He just said that AC/DC's new release was coming out on the 26th,
so he suspected that ACOS would be out on the same day, since they're
both heavy metal. I think I was slightly offended by his implied
comparison between AC/DC and DT. Oh well.....

I'll try my hardest to keep this short. ;)
First off, today I visited a slightly-larger-than-a-hole-in-the-wall
privately owned music store called Lovell's in Whittier, CA. It was my first
trip, so I was kinda excited. (I was hoping to run into some hard-to-get
imports like Everon...yes Jason, I still plan on sending you a tape.) Anyway,
guess what I ran into? The import single of _Lie_ with "To Live Forever" on
it. Well, I had never heard TLF before, but some many people in the past few
'Jams have been hyping it up that I decided to spend the $6.99 (it was on sale)
and buy it. It was a wonder I even found it...'cuz it doesn't say DT or Lie on
the spine, just "East West Recordings". Wait a minute...
Oke, I'm back. I also picked up a _Red Light Records Music Sampler_
for $0.49 (that's right...50 centavos), just because it was so cheap. It had
some pretty good stuff on it, but the last 4 songs were Death Metal. I had to
turn that crap off. It is so f**king annoying! Can you say "absolutely NO
talent?"
Well, now I have TLF on. It is so cool. Petrucci's solo at 2:51 is
groovy. Like he is saying, "Yeah...I know I'm good." The live version of
"Another Day" (from LatM) is also very good, except for when LaBrie gets REALLY
raw at 3:55. "So try another daa-aa-a-a-a-a-ay!" OUCH!
I wanted to thank Dr. Teeth for contributing the Portnoy insert form
the Japanese version of ACoS...as long as it is not included in the US ver. ;)
To add my own opinion to "Why DT releases bonus tracks on Japanese vers.": I
believe Dr. Teeth is right, but someone from before stated something about
album sales but didn't totally add it all together. This 'Jammer stated that
DT went triple gold in Japan (1.5 million copies), of which he is not sure.
Best case scenario vs. US sales (for DT) is almost 8:1, worst case is almost
2:1. Hmmm...if they sell that many more albums in Japan, they might (IMHO)
favor those fans a little more. This also *may* answer questions concerning
touring.
Oke, to wrap things up I have three questions/requests:
1) Which part of Journey's LTS is included in The Big Medley on ACoS?
(Hopefully, "It won't be long, yes, till your alone/When your lover,
oh, he hasn't come home" to the end...that part is simply awesome!)
2) Anybody making/selling Ytsejam shirts? Someone mentioned James (?) made
the last ones (which I have never seen). I want to show my support!
3) Can any 'Jammer e-mail a review (personal) of Marillion's _Fugazi_?
I saw it at Blockbuster Music for $20.99. Is it worth it? (I didn't
have the time to listen to it, 'cuz I was visiting a friend. I want to
know if I should all the way back out to my friend's house to check it
out.)

It's not a welcome change! I liked the variety that came with the rough
voice on Awake (I told you before), but ok, I think for this song it's the way
it has to be. There's so much of this I&W-spirit in it, so it had to get a

again. Remember how fucked up Mike Portnoy was when he talked about the
drum sound on I&W. (I remember he said something like "This time [for

Listen to the guitar sound on I&W, is it that way? I haven't heard the EP
yet (counting the HOURS!), but I can imagine how it could sound after I
read your comments.
If you mean the same thing as I do with "guitarish-Hammond-sound" I can
just say: YES, YES, YES! I just LOVE that crunching keyboard sound! As I
first heard 6:00 I thought the intro keyboard riff was a guitar! My
favourite keyboard sounds are a really heavy Hammond and simply piano. Some
cool sound FX maybe, but I never would miss this "synth-y" sound you like
better. So far for diverse tastes.

hope it was the last time they recorded with Prater - live drums or not!
Well, the chapter I&W is closed now and with it hopefully this producer's
also...

DT got rid of some of the parts of which they thought that didn't fit
anymore but which some of us really loved. I think that always happens when
a band works that long on a song. It's a evolutionary process, we have to
accept it the way they finally done it. It's DT at present state.
Well, we got the old version, so if you want to hear the missing parts,
listen to the old recordings.
There's something that comes to my mind in this context (evolution, song
writing process, etc). That one's for the ones who liked I&W more than
Awake because it's more "perfect". Listen to Awake. Some parts of it may be
not that worked out or perfectly arranged as the songs on I&W, but on the
other hand Awake's much more lively, more natural. What the hell... it also
worked this way, taking just one day per song instead of YEARS as it
happened with ACOS.
Nethertheless a really GREAT song, in every version I heard yet (incl. the
live version they played this summer)...
I just read the Japanese notes to ACOS... I'd LOVE to hear DT's version of
Child In Time, especially James singing it!
As I'm thinking of possible covers that DT could play, I realised that
there are (at least) hundreds of tunes they could do. And every single
cover would be great fun. Just do it!
Ok, that's it for now. About 33 hours to go!

anyone notice how good a band echolyn is to air-drum to? Maybe

About WDADU. I really feel sorry for all you guys (and there seems to be a
lot) who heard WDADU after I&W or even after Awake. I got WDADU the month
it was released and it was awesome then. It's still awesome. I think I'm
beginning to see what people are saying about Dominici but he didn't do a
bad job. The song writers are the same. Dominici wrote lyrics to 1.5 songs
(Afterlife and Status Seeker - w/Petrucci). Anyway, I guess I hear it
differently because, to me, that's the first DT album. It's dated 1989
which I thought was interesting in light of Portnoy's message to Japanese
fans. He says ACOS has changed since the 1989 version. That would put ACOS
in the same writing period as WDADU. People are saying it sounds more
I&W-ish which isn't surprising if it's that old. I&W also had 3 years of
writing-revising-rewriting (isn't it 3?). ACOS had 6 years of that. Well, I
was just thinking about that. I feel like a lot of people are viewing WDADU
in the same way Rush fans view the first Rush album but I don't see it that
way at all.

This has nothing to do with DT. On the recommendations of a couple of
people, I bought Fates Warning's "No Exit" and "Parallels". I was
impressed by the drumming on both. Now, I'm not going to complain about
the band's choice of Mark Zonder as the replacement drummer, but I was
wondering what happened to Steve Zimmerman. Did he quit or did he get
the boot? Anybody know what he's doing now?
Appreciate any info.

You can use car wax (I've heard this will work), but use a CD scratch remover
if you can find one. Take a soft cloth and run in a circular motion
(in direction of grooves -- as in a record).

I'm a keyboardist, but I've found myself playing air keys, air
guitar, air bass, and air drums. It's all there, dude! -except air
singing. . . that takes real talent.
I absolutely despise Dominici's spoiling of the Killing Hand, but
on the other hand, pun unintended, the version on LatM, with another
hand, lacks the absolutely astounding quality of the instrumental
opening, though they do recycle the riffs.
I find that I dislike Dominici's voice alot, but I prefer the
older instrumental stuff to the more recent. I know it's not healthy for
a growing band to look backwards, but I think that they should play more
of their older songs when they perform. That would be incredibly cool.

The DT version of "Tears" isn't really that interesting
instrumentally. The interesting part is the emotion that
James adds to the song.

Yes, buy a new one! I've bought two new copies and one used.
The bastards at the Good Guys' repair place kiped mine out of
my CD player (my fault, of course). Support our favorite band!
And, are those who've obtained promo copies of ACOS planning
on buying the official release? There seem to be quite a few
of you; after all, we on the ytsejam were an impetus for them
to record the EP. (Please don't flame, I know that a lot of us
are students strapped for $$, but what about the others..?

that John Petrucci would be coming there the first weekend of October

Related news: my informant and his band, Bonedance, will be playing a
"test" show at the Wreck Room in Atlanta tonight (Thurs.) After I
brought A CHANGE OF SEASONS down and played on the house PA Wed., I've
been told to come down again tonight to play it again. If you're in
the area and haven't heard it yet, feel free to drop by. If nothing

I just noticed the other day in my car where I have 6 speakers that the very beginning few seconds of 6:00 there is a drum part that goes in a circular direction around the car. When I first noticed it I kept starting the song over and over.

well i attended mike portnoy's drum clinic last night in houston and was blown away yet again. he is just amazing.
before he came out, they played ACOS over the PA. we got sweet 2nd row center seats (it was in a medium size club, 1000 people capacity) i would guess there was around 200 or so people there. good turnout. anyway, i told everyone around me that ACOS was the new dream theater song, and to listen to it. alot of them seemed to be really bored with it, oh well.
mike came out, and immediately broke into a solo that lasted around 10 minutes. he then mentioned the release of ACOS, and went into a discussion of odd time composing, jamming, writing, etc. most of the questions were very intelligent and relevant with a few notable exceptions.
mike played part of a change of seasons as an odd time example, the verse riff that is in 15. he showed how he takes the pattern and divides it up differently for the first verse and the second. really cool. he also played the entire middle secion of metropolis, more solo stuff, and ended the night playing along to a DAT of erotomania. that was pretty intense.
it was funny, before erotomania he said "well i've got my DAT with me..." and i *almost* said "cool, so do i" but luckily i restrained myself :)
i was DAT taping, btw. the tape sounds incredible if anyone wants copies. i dont really have time to be doing much trading, so if there is interest maybe we can set up a tape tree or something. i was going to bring my camcorder (you could bring in a mobile recording studio for all mike cared) but my camcorder met an untimely demise. i did get the number and address of a guy that was filming. he filmed the entire thing plus the autograph session.
after the session, the idiots from the texas music emporium gave away all kinds of sabian and mapex crap (t-shirts, stickers, hats, price lists...) and mike *finally* came out to sign shit. i brought him a present, a DAT clone of one of the queensryche shows i taped. he was pretty happy about that. i got him to sign my ACOS cd, one of my subcon cds, and he commented about it. he asked me if i knew mike bahr (yes, he asked me, not the other way around) and i said yeah, that tucson ryche show i just gave you, mike went with me to that show :) he got a kick out of that, and i told him that i taped one of the tracks that ended up on subconcious, and he started asking me about the origins of some of the stuff. seems that he was never informed or forgot or something about where some of the tracks came from. he saw my ytsejam shirt too, and said to say hi to everyone.
i also got alot of scoops on some of our other favorite bands. here is what i can remember.
helstar: broke up again a couple of weeks ago
galactic cowboys: new guitarist is wally farkus, longtime friend of the band. he was the guitar tech, and the keyboard player they added at their last gig in houston. he is a really small guy. :) for those of you that saw GC open for DT, wally is the dude that came out onstage wearing overalls with a pitchfork and riding a toy tractor during circles in the fields. dane sonnier was at the clinic, and he told me that he helped wally learn the songs. dane said the main reason he left GC was that he didnt like the deal with metal blade, he didnt think it was the right label to be with. also, he is wanting to do more bluesier stuff, and he didnt think metal blade would let him do that.
fates warning: this is totally unconfirmed, but two different friends of mine tell me that andre corbin (formerly of helstar, he wrote most of the nosferatu album) has joined fates warning!!! supposedly he flew out to LA, and they are rehearsing right now. anyone that has any news about this please let me know...
oh yeah, mike said that he is having another clinic on long island monday, so everyone up there show up with your camcorders and/or DATs :)
