(Acronym central in the subject field, eh?!
)Is NDTC a universal acronym? Someone used it once,
and I thought it was better than typing out No DT Content.
(if not, can we make it universal?)

    >Johnny, member of the YLHB (Ytsejam Long-Haired Brotherhood)

    Regarding the YLHB -
I am no longer eligible to be a member! =) That's right, gang -
I got it chopped off! :(

Yesterday, I get a phone call from an NBC affiliate in Lancaster, PA.
(For those of you not from the east coast, it's basically a dinky hick
town with a lot of Amish/Pennsylvania Dutch people up there.)
Anyway, I'd sent this guy a resume about a relief tech position.
The phone rings at 11:00am, and I hear the machine in the other
room go off. I JUMPED out of bed when I heard the guy's name,
played the message back, and, within 2 minutes, I had an interview
    set up for 9/5 @ 11am.

Well, considering that I'm fresh out of college, and need a job BADLY -
mind you, I'm not sure what this pays, but, it's full time!; so, I did it.
    It's gone. (Sigh)

However, it would make me feel better if you all still refered to me as
Hairball...then again, only people who've gotten checks from me know
    my real name. =)

My band is gonna shit a collective brick. And so will my now ex-g/f, who
called at 3am asking me to get back together...haha. This oughta keep
    her away from me! =)

Sorry to waste space, but, I had to tell someone!

-Hairball, still an audio type/musician; just minus the hair. =(

    Hi all!

For the past year or so, I've been trying to find Damn the Machine's
album, but it doesn't seem to be available here in Norway. A friend
of mine is going to Washington D.C. in a few weeks, and he's going to
buy a copy of the album if he could find it. I was wondering if someone
    in the
D.C. area could tell me where he could find the CD.

I'm also interested in any information about the band. The only thing
I've heard is that they made one album and then broke up.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

A month ago I got this info from a guy when I asked in the usenet about
    the actual status of DTM:

What a coincidence, I've spent months looking for info on Damn The
Machine, and then this morning I actually found something out, so I can
actually tell you about it. Anyway, apparently the original line-up for
Damn The Machine, minus the singer, are in a new band called Mumbo's
Brain. I'm not sure if they're getting another vocalist in, or if one
    of
the band are gonna do it, or what the story is there. If I find out
    more
    I'll let you know.

    Hope I could help!
If you don't succeed in getting the album, lemme know!

It's funny the way things turn out when we're not paying
attention to them. I've posted nonstop on CDs, CD-related material, my
general observations, etc, while not actively participating in a lot of
    the arguments at hand.

I figure it's high time I posted some of my thoughts on DT for
comment, and I would like commentary from anyone interested to post their
    replies to the list...

You see, in a position like mine, for some strange reason (which
is even stranger when you consider what a goof-off I am in real life) a
lot of Jammers and alt.music.*ers mail _me_ when they have a question
about something, or at times, mail _me_ when there's an argument going on
that I haven't jumped in on, to get my take on it. Most fascinating is
that half the time I don't know the answer myself. Not that I mind the
mail. It's nice to be liked in cyberspace (oooh I hate that word tho). I
am then put into the interesting position that since people usually
listen at least passively to what I say, I don't want to destroy the
coniguity of a thread or make a person's (totally valid) opinion seem
"wrong" _just because_ I disagree. This isn't an ego thing; it was
brought to my attention by another Jammer as I didn't even realize it
myself. So with that in mind, I hope nobody will hold back a biting,
hard, evil response to my comments on the perception that the rest of the
Jam will take sides against them. :)

    * My top 5 ESSENTIAL DREAM THEATER moments *

    1. The end jam on Innocence Faded. Takes an otherwise average song and
makes it the very best. There is no other song currently out that surges
my blood and pumps my adrenaline like the end jam on IF.

    2. "By nature's inflexible grace, I'm learning to liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
    iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii
iiiiiiive......." (bass notes follow). This entire part of the song LTL,
concluding with the passage above, is of an intensity level to be awed.

    3. "I sit down with my son, and with him we watch the crimson sunset...
(Gather ye rosebuds while ye may....)" This part of A Change of Seasons
is awe-inspiring, as is the whole opening section, hell, the whole song.
but this final passage is so appropriate, so perfect, so touching, and
the backup vocals make it even more insistent.

    4. "Seen my diary on the newsstand, seems we've lost the truth to
quicksand, it's a shame no one is praying, cause these voices in my head
keep saying...." The high point of the AMBI trilogy. The backup harmony
is beautiful, and this passage has a person instinctively singing along
even if they don't realize it. I sat down and learned the vocal harmony
part, and it sounds _so cool_ to sing the high part while the low part
dominates on the album, and to hit the harmony just right.

    5. "Pull me under, pull me under, pull me under I'm not afraid. Living my
life too much in the sun, only until your will is DONE!!!" the final
chorus. A lot of times we forget the popular PMU, which is even more odd
since it's the song that got 90% of us into Dream Theater. The chorus of
PMU is what makes it shine. The final chorus is the best. Listen to the
ALBUM VERSION (the non-harmonized live version don't cut it) again and
re-capture the awe and wonder at this musical masterpiece.

There are other parts that I like as well, but those are the most
vital, the most thrilling to me. I'm interested to see what people think
of these choices, not simply to see a cavalcade of LISTS, but to see WHY
people love or hate MY choices and WHY they like theirs. It just may be
    that there's a mind-bendingly great passage that I haven't given due
    course to.

More on ACOS... when you guys get this album, you're gonna
shit... it just rules, beginning to end. ACOS has grown on me and it's
NOT getting old and boring... every time I listen to it I find something
new. It's much in the style of Images & Words musically and vocally,
which was fine by me since I liked both IAW and Awake, but those who
shunned Awake will be reborn anew. Also, there is the most AWESOME
riff/lick/basic theme in ACOS that gets played acoustically first, then
electrically, that sounds for all the world like they pulled it out of
an Ultima or Myst soundtrack. See if you can spot this lick. It was
particularly impacted on me since I'm reading the Jordan "Wheel of Time"
series now and my mind is attuned to fantasy/D&D.

Magic... can't live with it, can't live without it. I'm working
on a Dream Theater expansion, with such Summon Legends as the Miracle and
The Sleeper, and enchantments like Glass Moon. :) That'd be cool...

"Don't Look Past Me" was the most promising of DT's earlier
musical experiments, if you ask me, if a bit cheesecakey. King's X would
    have been proud, though.

When will we get another GALACTIC COWBOYS album??

I can't wait to hear DT's next summer album, since Showdown was
    interesting enough....

The best movies out right _now_ are Waterworld, Desperado, Under
Siege II, and Mortal Kombat. The best movie so far this year is
Braveheart. The best animation so far is Pocahontas. The worst movie so
far is the Jerky Boys. (what a sad excuse for a movie! the tapes were
more than enough of this idiotic pair, and were funny to boot!)

I second this recommendation for Illuvitar. The music reminds me

I just wanted to let everybody know there's some guy called John Petrucci
living in San Francisco. Apparently, he got burned up about something in

    All -

I was somewhat surprised when I got the latest copy of "Guitar For The
Practicing Musician" to see a review of the new DT EP "A Change of
Seasons."(October 1995 issue - the one with the two members of Red Hot
Chili Peppers kissing on the front....from them that DOESN'T surprise me!!!
    <g>).

I was surprised because, #1) it's not out yet, and #2) technically, "ACoS"
is being released as an "EP," and I've never seen an EP reviewed in such a
    magazine before.

While I'm thinking of it, one thing of note: "Awake" was released on
East-West records (division of Atco), while the article lists "ACoS" as
being released on Elektra.....is "A Change of Seasons" also "A Change of
    Labels??" Hmmmm....

Anyway, for those of you who might be interested, following is the entire
text of the review, reprinted without permission of GFTPM (Which, BTW, is
THE best Guitar-oriented magazine in print, IMHO). [My comments are in
    these brackets].

    ******************************************************************
[Taken from October 1995 "Guitar For The Practicing Musician"]

DREAM THEATER - A Change of Seasons (Elektra)

PERFOMANCE: From a serious epic to light cover tunes
HOT SPOTS: "A Change Of Seasons," "Funeral For A Friend,"
                "Achilles Last Stand."
BOTTOM LINE: The two faces of Dream Theater revealed.

Here's something different from Dream Theater: their first large-scale
epic, "A Change of Seasons," plus a whole batch of groovy cover tunes. The
title cut kicks off with lilting, baritone-sounding arpeggios that segue
into a thrashy overture with lots of DT trademarks: odd-meter rhythms,
dark, minor-flavored passages, and the vicious power riffing of John
Petrucci. Stylistically, this isn't much of a departure from DT's standard
    fare--just a lot longer.

The musicianship of Petrucci and his bandmates is stellar as usual (there's
one stunning instrumental riff in the middle that delightfully blasts off
into the chromatic ozone), though if you weren't a fan before, this
probably won't convert you. Really, "A Change Of Seasons" is a love letter
to the band's loyal cult of fans, in effect thanking them for the years of
support. No doubt, the Theaterheads will go gaga for this epic, much the
same way Rush fans went berserk over the side-long "Hemispheres" back in
    1978.

The cover tracks, on the other hand, show a lighter side of the band. Gone
are the minor-key shadings and the overly dramatic vocal posturings of
singer Jamie [The author's typo, not mine] LaBrie; instead, you'll hear
faithful covers of such tracks as Elton John's "Funeral For A Friend/Love
Lies Bleeding" and Deep Purple's "Perfect Strangers," in which Petrucci
absolutely _KILLS_ during his solo. Equally exciting is their take on
Zeppelin's "The Rover" and "Achilles Last Stand," which has another
    barnburning guitar break.

[ It seems like the author of this article LOVES Petrucci, but doesn't care
too much for LaBrie...which means that I only HALFway agree with him.
    <grin> ]

Less successful is the medley of "Carry On Wayward Son," "Bohemian
Rhapsody," Journey's "Loving, Touching, Squeezing" (now you know why the
singer sounds like he does), The Dixie Dregs' "Cruise Control," and
Genesis' "Turn It On Again." These latter performances are perfectly fine
and you can see why they would go over well in concert, but as small
snippets of famous tunes they don't seem to have any purpose in a
pre-recorded format. The full-length Purple and Zeppelin tracks work far
    better.

Ultimately, no matter how you slice it, this Dream Theater disc is simply a
gift to their existing fans. And when you hear the band playing simpler,
more straightforward cover material so successfully, you'll realize that
it's food for thought, too. Check it out and feed your head. --- Pete
    Prown

[From this last paragraph, I think Pete liked the disc as a whole. I DON'T
think he realizes that this is supposed to be an "ACoS" _EP_ and that the
covers are basically just bonus songs]
    ******************************************************************

Hope you all found that to be interesting!!!!

    Later....I'm BEACH-BOUND for the week!!!!!

Again, I'd appreciate it if I could get some help in obtaining the upcoming

I've heard the arguement that this is unethical because it will keep The
Theater from touring the U.S. but hey! The news is out! They're not going to
tour for this release. I'm sure it could be said that SOMEHOW I'm hurting the
future U.S. touring possiblities, but this is SUCH a minute little drop in the
bucket that I can live with the guilt. ;) I mean, sure you can have you
opinion, but I have mine. And that's that.

Okay, enough about politics!!! (I can't stand the subject, personally.) I'm
just here to beg for some help finding that Japanese release, so if you can
help, please e-mail me directly. If there's enough demand (as I am expecting
there to be) then post it if you wish.

    Thanks again!

Innocence Faded, and miner along with my friend's reactions was "This
sounds kind of Bon Jovi-ish. That was, of course, before the jamming
outro. I could understand the naive statement; thank god I've seen
