I have a question. Why is it that there are CDs released in Europe or
Japan that are never released in the US? And if they're released in the
US, why is it that the European or Japanese versions have extra songs? If
anyone knows why, please let me know. Thanks.

Cool to meet humble little ol' _me_? I'm afraid the reality falls
far short of the conception. :) I don't pay a great deal of attention to
how I dress or act, and in so doing I probably keep the t-shirt and
flip-flops industries in business full time... Brian Cox and Dr. Mosh
have both been here and met me, so they'll tell you what a slob I am.

Then again, people sure seem to enjoy meeting my cat, Tori Amos.
She's sort of an aberration among animals... a cat who isn't cold and
withdrawn, but who instead acts a great deal like a dog. The Dream
Theater posters, framed memorabilia, and other such things around the
room seem to be noticed as well, which I like since, after all, that's
what I bought 'em for! :)

Speaking of which, I must wonder (on a Dream-Theaterish note)
what do people think their homes must be like? I mean, this isn't one of
those "get-out-of-my-face" curiosities... I just wonder if, say, Portnoy
has a THX-grade home theater set up in one room, and a pool table in the
next, then maybe a jacuzzi out back... must be nice!

My least favourite Dream Theater moment? Any of the six minutes
of the original recording of the Gorilla Session. Yecch. Out of songs
only on the released albums, I'd have to say it's on WDADU... the song
"Afterlife" sometimes falls a bit flat on me. Sometimes.

Those DT window stickers are cool! I've got one, my friends all
have one, it's a happenin' thing. Buy one. :)

If you're talking about _To Live Forever_, you can't forget the live
version on the _Live in Tokoyo_ video. IMHO, that version completely
blows away any other version ever. James voice on that just rules, and it
doesnt hurt that it has that incredible solo after it....

Does anyone wanna make bets on how often ACoS will be played on the
radio? Does anyone know of plans for a single? Everyone knows that there
will be no single (the concept is insane) and of course ACoS will get
approximately nil air-play. I can count on one hand the number of DT
songs that I have heard on the radio, with a few fingers to spare.

Now, you may be asking yourself, why is this freak telling us all of
this, and why should we care anyways? The answer is simple. What does
this tell us about DT and what they think of their fans? DT is releasing
this album, with the (almost) legendary ACoS and a bunch of live cover
tunes from the Ronnie Scotts show. Both of these have gotten a lot of
bandwidth on this mailing list. This album will not have much popular
appeal, but DT apparently cares what their fans think a whole lot
more than the general public, and acts accordingly. I just think that
    that's cool.

Sorry, I kinda went off babbling... but before I leave, I have to add
something. My vector calculus teacher looks like Mike Bahr... and his
last name is Baur... coincidence? Mike, are you really a math teacher at
    the University of Arizona? :)

I still skip over them, but I do it because I don't like them. I just
listen to Dream Theater for the drumming and, for every band I've ever
listened to, when the song is slow, the drumming gets boring. I don't
like to get bored when I listen to music, so I never listen to slow(er)
    songs.

    > album. I couldn't get enough. To this day, Met. and UaGM have
    > changed the way I listen to music.
Same here, but, interestingly enough, I thought UaGM wasn't a terribly
interesting song until I bought the Live in Tokyo video. I was thoroughly
impressed by Mike's live version of it (in fact, I couldn't get enough of
it; to me, that one performance embodies "smoothness and precision").

Well, that one was definitely one of my early favorites (and still is).
I think the whole intro is a brilliant piece of composition and... well,
I'll just end the praises right there. I'm sure you get the idea.

    > why is it the favorite?
Here's my guess: It's the longest track on I&W and, appropriately
enough, goes through the most changes (whether you're looking at riffs,
time signatures, melodies, moods, tempos, whatever). That's usually
enough to get me hooked. On top of that, I think it's the closest thing
that I&W has to an "epic" song, just by virtue of all the different
things that happen in the song's music. People on this list are pretty
epic-hungry (witness all the hype on this list as people bought the
Subconscious CD [thanks again, Mike!!!] and raved about A Change of Seasons).
I definitely count myself as one of these people. I want DT to crank out
MORE epics, I also would like a few more 10-minute instrumentals on the
next album...(sigh), dare to dream, I guess.
    >
    > If you want, post your favorite parts and I'll give it another listen in

The intro. Go to the intro of LtL and listen to it about 10 times. That
    should do the trick.

to wait another week for the soundtrack to come out !>[> I saw it

from one pathetic walkman earpiece from behind the screen. Plus,
we got there 15 mins. late because it started earlier than they
thought. I love that part in the beginning with the _Mortal Kombat_

Yes...they are pretty good. A little too much repitition in their choruses
though. But they have a very cool drum and bass sound to them. Anyone know
what they are up to I havent heard anything from about them in a while. As for

My least favorite moment of DT -

I've seen DT 3 times in Dallas TX. The second time I saw them J.
Labrie made a comment introducing the next song (think it was
Fortune in Lies) that was off-color about Charlie in the vein of
the previous vocalist that did not to too much for the band. I
didn't appreciate that comment because I thought it was
un-professional and arrogant. Charlie contributed to the band in a
unique way. I prefer J. Labrie over Charlie but James can't touch
the "The Killing Hand", which is one of my three favorite songs on
the WDADU CD, if not my favorite. Also don't care for Mike's
spitting. I think in general they could work on their live
presentation, make it more classy - like their music. I think that
will come in time. Don't misunderstand me - the music is great
live!, it's just that it's a rough draft when it comes to watching
them play it. I consider myself DT's biggest FAN.

My most favorite moment of DT -

The last time I saw them (shortly after Awake's release) they
performed an excellent concert. Very impressed with DT bringing to
a live audience with what they concocted in the studio. I could
not control myself I was jumping up in the air and acting like a
fool during most of the show. Not that age matters all that much
but I'm 36 and haven't been that exciting at a live band in all my
        life.

I've a lot more to say, this is my first post and I've been on the
list about 9 mos now. Mike has taught my alot about double bass
drumming. In fact I know of no other drummer that does it better
than he. I'm a drummer of 24 years and I enjoy playing along with
their CDs. I can perform most of the things he does (not to brag)
but I didn't write it and that's what really matters.

        I welcome your replies.

        Michael C.

You've expressed my exact same sentiments. I still to this day find myself skipping over Another Day, Surrounded, and WFS. They're great songs, but I find the same thing, that I can't wait to hear the other amazing, faster paced songs. And because of that, there's also a lot of Awake I don't like - the music is great, but it's simply not as amazing and intense as on songs like PMU, TTT, Metropolis, etc.

    > I hate to be blasphemous, but LTL was the LAST song that I 'got into'.
    > I mean, it's a great song, but next to the Big Three, it just had to
    > a back seat. It was only after urging from Ytsejam that I gave it

I didn't listen to it for a while as well, I was too obsessed with those "big three" as well (as well as ACOS, of course). However, just a couple of weeks
ago I listened to it again, this time I noticed things I'd never noticed before. In particular, that long instrumental part in the middle. And the drumming ... whoa ... enough said.

LTL is probably my favourite song right now (I go through little phases where
    I have a favourite song for a little while - I really don't know if there's
any one DT song that I could call my favourite, period), and I can't seem to
get enough of it. It's IMHO their best flowing song (out of the long 8+ minute ones that is), and if anyone tells me Dream Theater's music lacks co-
herence, and a general theme for each song, while I agree that that's true to a little degree (not that that's a BAD thing, I like it when songs wander into all kinds of soloing, etc.), LTL definately prooves that they have great songwriting ability, even with longer songs.

    > Why does it top all the poll lists? It really seems to strike a chord
    > with some people. For me, it's UaGM.

I went through my UAGM phase before LTL and ACOS. :) Of course, now I'm sick of it, having learned the keyboard solo and playing it literally every time I sit down at a keyboard or piano. ;)

    > If you want, post your favorite parts and I'll give it another listen
    > in that light.

I love the intro to LTL, the "Once again we dance in the crowd, at times I step away" (I think) part, and all of that long instrumental part, as well as the ending, are all some of my favourite DT moments - not saying much when there's hundreds of them, but I try to recognize each moment individually. ;)

Just a quick bit of info for UK 'jammers.

In the current issue of Q one of the record store adverts at the back (can't remember which one) lists the release date for ACOS as Sept. 11th.

    That's Monday!

    Hi there,

I recently get some news from the band by their management. The band will start to write and rehearse for the new album in October, before going to Japan for 2 shows (26th and 28th of October, with a possibility to play in South Korea on October 23rd, but not confirmed). After these shows, the band will wontinue to work on thei new album to be release in spring 96. They don't know yet the producer but great names ere interested to work with them (I am not sure I am allowed to give names, but believe me if it happens, all ytsejammers will be surprised!). The new album will certainly be more "song oriented", more closer to IandW than to Awake. About ACOS, The Japanese version will be the same as the US and European one, except that probably the Japanese one will include a coupon and the 1000 first to sned back this coupon will receive a 3" mini cd featuring "tears" from the Ronnie Scott's. "Perfect strangers" will be release as a single in UK (and probably UK only), with "Damage Inc" as a B-side. What else? John Myung and Mike Portnoy will shoot instructionnal videos in November. 2 separate ones, but Mike will appear on John's one and John on Mike's one. That's all for today.

    Hello!

Hell, another one who quoted the whole digest... and I wondered why the digest was that big.

I think now I've also to post something to this best/worst moment thread. It's interesting how different the Ytsejammer's tastes are, although we all like the same band.

I like Dominici's version of "The Killing Hand" much more than the LatM version, for example. There needs to be that prog-rock pathos in it! But well, taste differs.

    Ok, let's see...

Best moments/parts/whatever, in a somewhat chronological order:

    - The vocal harmonies in the chorus of Status Seeker (YES! When I first heard WDADU in 1990 and reached the beginning of Status Seeker I first thought "What a cheesy hardrock-keyboard-riff", but the chorus saved it.) - The ending of Only A Matter Of Time, one of the most impressive album finals I've ever heard. - The whole instrumental section of Metropolis, escpecially the bass tapping. Four minutes of madness. - The rhythm guitar in Under A Glass Moon - Wait For Sleep and the corresponding part in LTL - The latin section in Learning To Live - The drum intro to 6:00 - The drum sound on the whole Awake album, after getting sick of that sampled drums on IAW. - The HEAVY seven-string rhythm guitars in Mirror/Lie - The also very heavy, distorted keyboard sound on some of the songs on Awake. - James LaBries evil voice especially in The Mirror. The combination of his very well trained voice with a raw and heavy sound kills! The vocal style on IAW bored me to death. Not only that there was no variation of vocal style, there was also a production problem. On IAW the vocals sound unnatural, flat, somewhat overproduced, not as nearly as natural and full as on Awake. As I heard Awake I realised what a great singer James LaBrie really is. Overall a killer production! - The guitar solo part at the end of Lie - The last fast instrumental part of the live-version of ACOS. Well, maybe I should take the whole song for a best moment...

    Worst moments:

    - The first few seconds of Status Seeker ;-) - The moment when I realised that the sound of WDADU wasn't as good as it should be! - The moment when I first heard IAW. After a few seconds I thought, yes, the sound is a lot better. Then I heard the vocals and thought, phew, the new singer sounds also fine. But after about eight minutes I suddenly thought, hell, there's something wrong with my CD! This "maybe they forgot to fade out" or "sounds like an engineer stumbled over the power cord"-ending just SUCKS! Live it's a LOT better, you hear the musicians stop instead of just the recording. - The moment when I realised that also IAW has its big sound problem (triggered drums, what else). Can't wait to hear ACOS!

BTW, speaking of vocal styles: Don't refer to the IAW-vocals as "the old style", because he did the raw "Awake"-vocals long before he joined DT! IMHO, he should use this raw style also in future, because it gives a lot more variety to the vocals. I don't think that it could ruin his voice, he sang this way for years!

Another subject: Sending Mike Bahr money? Maybe this would result in some spare time for guitar practice! How about a hidden bonus track on Acoustic Dreams? This time it would fit, wouldn't it ;->>>.......

    Bye,

    Good day jammers

Was wondering how many of you have gone into the CDNow Page and checked out their ratings on individual recordings. Was checking on an order of mine and decided to see of they offered ACoS yet. Lo and behold they did (but said it wasn't available yet) but I also checked out the only rating they did for DT cd (I&W). They gave it a score of 5 out 9 on whatever ratings system they use. Intrigued, I decided to check some other favorite groups and discovered the following.

    Queensryche Rage 7/9

    Warning 4/9

    Empire 8/9

    Mindcrime 7/9

    PL 7/9

    LiveCrime 5/9

Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian 5/9

    No Exit 6/9

    Parallels 5/9

(And just for shits and grins)

    Metallica ...and Justice... 8/9

    Live Shit...7/9

    MoP 9/9

    Metallica 9/9

    Ride... 8/9

Who does these ratings and where in the hell do they get them? Do you mean to tell me that Metallica's Master of Puppets is a better album (strictly by this rating system, mind you) then I&W. I think not but would be interested to hear what other people's opinions are. Sorry for the length.

I know this is an old subject but I wanted to ask/say a couple things. First, I'm still HIGHLY disappointed that the "Please don't go" part is gone. Can someone with the promotional copy (you bastards ;) please tell us what happens there. It's at 6:12 with "Prepare for the fight." How did they take that out? Did it get changed? I'm just baffled because in Providence they played it just like the Subconscious version except for new extended intro, some additional bits but nothing go removed. Wierd that they'd play it different than how they recorded it.

The other thing is replacing "massive fuck" with "sympathy." What's a massive fuck? It doesn't seem like that and sympathy are interchangeable. "massive fuck" doesn't make sense to me. I thought it sounded good when James sang "I don't need your sympathy." Oh well. I'm really anxious to hear the new version. I'd also love to hear what people's interpretation of ACOS is. I remember some people saying that it's anti-Christian or something. I can't find any religious references at all. It seems like a little auto-biography of sorts. I'm afraid to say what I think because I'm usually pretty bad at lyric interpretation. Anyone else?

    Hi all!

My Cygnus CD arrived last week, and I think it's great! It's got that awsome raw sound that I like. Close your eyes, and it's almost like you're at the actual concert, and not listening to a plastic disc.

There have been some complaints about the drop-outs. I'm not really bothered by them, though it's a pity that a part of Hemisperes is missing.

If you like Rush, Cygnus is definetly worth getting (IMHO). So there!

    Eagerly awaiting ACOS, YtseKen

MoP is the clasic thrash/speed/metal album, and the I&W is classic prog-metal.

i don't agree with the self-titled metallica album getting a 9/9...maybe a 6/9 or 5/9.... i don't agree with many of tehir ratings, so i never pay attention to them anyway...

    just my opinion

The 26th is my birthday (I'll be 22)!

Maybe the final version of it will clock in at around 30 minutes or something (up from the 23 minutes or so that it's at right now).

God, please let it be true!!!!!!!

Did my subject line get your attention? Good.

I went to my local CD swap store today and was very suprised and delighted to see they had copies of ACOS for sale. This is one of those "hole-in-the-wall" places and apparently they bought a bunch of promotional copies (they have one of those nice little stickers on the front that say "For promotional use only - sale is illegal" blah, blah, blah) . Needless to say, I bought one. :-) Any of you Jammers that live in the Washington D.C/Baltimore area, the place is called CD Depot and it's located on Route 1 in College Park (about 2 miles from the U of MD). Go grab yourself a copy. They're $10 each. .

After I bought my copy, they still have 11 copies left. Here's what I'm willing to do if any of you want to buy an early copy. Send me cash or a money order (I don't assume any risk for you losing cash in the mail) for $10.50 (to cover CD + tax) in a padded mailing envelope with return postage stamps on the inside. I'll go over there during lunch and pick up a copy. If for some reason they run out, I'll just return your money in your return envelope.

My email is clarke.woodfin@gsfc.nasa.gov and my snail mail is:

Clarke Woodfin 123 Dundee Ave. Chester, MD 21619

HOWEVER, I'm willing to make a deal with those of you who want to deal - I really, really, really, want a copy of Subconscious (I didn't get a copy). If any of you have any extra copies you are willing to part with, I'd be willing to pick up a copy of ACOS on good faith and we can work out a deal - I can pick up ACOS and send it to you with $15 ($25 minus $10 = the cost difference between the two CDs) and we can trade. Or whatever deal we work out. If you want to work a deal for Subconscious, email me.

By the way, ACOS sounds awesome. It's a nice "hybrid" of I&W and Awake. I prefer the I&W DT sound, so I'm glad to see them head back in that direction.

    Have a nice day!

    Clarke
