>>First I'd like to address the music reading thing - no, you're not a
musician if you can't read music or don't know any theory. Then you
are one who plays a musical instrument. If you're content with that, so
be it.<<
This world's in a lot of trouble because there are a lot of people
making some great music out there that couldn't read a note if there
life depended on it. But I guess we're not too high on ourselves, are
we. I don't know how the air up there is, but down here it smells like

Got my tape the other day. I'll get the negative out of the way right
away: Watercolor? Huh? I don't get it.
On the Page and Chroma Key, on the other hand, kick some serious butt.
Zonder is brilliant as usual, and I'm really glad Kevin decided to
quicken the pace and let himself loose a bit. I like his previous demos
immensely, but these songs are more exciting, and not lacking any of the
depth of his others. My only complaint is that there are only two songs
(watercolor? huh?)
Anyway, I hope Kevin and Mark work together more in the future, and that
we'll see more of chroma key than these two (okay, three) songs. I think
the people who didn't like the earlier demos should give these a
try...they're more progressive and not quite as depressing. Also the
sound quality is much better, probably because it's coming straight from
the source.

Woo hoo! I got my boxed, unopened G2 Jazz and Optimus Prime today!
Uh...whoops...wrong Internet group. Anyway, on with the miasma...
>Okay, screw Letterman. DT should do an ER soundtrack.
Okay, screw ER. DT should do a NYPD Blue soundtrack. It's in their
backyard (even though the show is filmed in CA), and I can see Dennis
Franz's character: "Dammit you punk, you listen to ME! Balls and
chunk are where it's at!" Also, in order to get more female 'Jammers, towards
the end of the show one could see Portnoy's gluteus maximus.

Man, some people. They're lucky enough to get engaged AND hear advance
recordings of DT. Gandalf, you're the man!
>Like when you're on a rollercoaster and you're trying to harmonize with
>the person screaming behind you, then they change the pitch...
So that's how Mariah Carey sings so gosh darn high. Yeah, I know, she's
not a prog artist, but she covered a Journey song, and another band
covered a part of a Journey song for a certain medley...
>Subject: Various vicariances...
Huh? Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.
>Who? Asdf? they rock. Their guitarist Jkl; is pretty good, and their drummer
>Qwerty is almost as good as Mike P.
The new album by Dvorak is excellent, it's on the Code of Hammurabi label.
>Just so you know, I sent a letter to the Nirvana list and said to stop
>sending us their stupid things.
DreamNDay, please keep correspondence with other mailing lists
civilized. The last thing the 'Jam needs is to be spammed with "How
Smells Like Teen Spirit changed my life"-type messages. If you are
sending an e-mail about our list, you are representing each and everyone
of us.
>The only bands that are gonna be in Paris that week are Sting, The
>Cranberries (I think) and Green day.
Go see Sting for me. Kenny Kirkland is back on keyboards, and Vinnie
Colaiuta rocks! Plus, he's added backup singers and a horn section.
While you're in France, represent us well. You are our Ytsejambassador,
make us proud!
>Hi there! I just got off the phone with Derek Sherinian and he wants to

Another guy is in contact with DT. Oh well, at least I met Vernon Reid
(my all-time biggest influence) once.
>BTW, if anybody as that transformers soundtrack, would you consider sending

Don't bother. It's still in the stores under the "Soundtracks" section.
And if the store misspells the word "soundtracks", please don't remove
the cardboard marker.
>...It's a hilarious song and its also to the Jewish tune, Havanageela (I

I never noticed this! Anyway, Scott Ian is Jewish, so that explains it.
Another trend-setting fact: Scott's real name is Scott Rosenfeld, Ian is
his middle name. All these newer bands with weird pseudonyms...sheesh.
>If Peter Collins can manage to sound Portnoy's snare like the snare on

Why be content with old sounds? Let Mr. Collins (if he becomes the

the piccolo snare, that's the Helmet fan in me talking.

He does make the occasional appearance on Conan O'Brien though.

Learning new instruments doesn't detract from your abilities, it enhances
them. I try to incorporate phrasing horn players would use when I play the
guitar. Music is holistic (IMO), the more areas you cover, the more tools
you have to use.

eat and pay bills, y'know.
>I know everyone on the Jam would want to see more videos, but the

I recently discovered MuchMusic while on spring break. One of the first
videos I saw was "Promise" from Victor. I was shocked. There's more to
broadcasting than MTV, however huge that enterprise may be. The bigger
they are, the harder they fall.

I think you need to clarify between "shaving one's head", and "cutting
one's hair off". Peter Garrett (the lead singer from Midnight Oil), has a
shaved head. Mike Patton has short hair, Billy Gould's is even
shorter. As far as the trend of everybody in the rock world cutting
their hair off, what about The Who or the Rolling Stones?
>BTW...I don't have anything against shaved heads, just that after seeing
>Billy Corgan w/ one (doesn't he look awful) I cringe at the thought of Satch

Since when does one's hair length determine one's musical abilities? (I
know you're not implying that). To quote the Sprite commercial, "Image is
nothing".
>That sounds good, but the key is F# (listen to the rhythm tracks). I think

Not if he uses an alternate tuning.

Exactly, your humble opinion. Let DT decide what sounds THEY like, and
then we can analyze it up the wazoo.
>As much as I would love Trevor Horn produce the album, I am afraid he
>would lean to the more poppy side. One name comes to mind, SEAL. Not
>that I don't like Seal but, there is a definate difference in the music.
Don't judge a producer's potential with one album. We can only predict
what they may or may not do. As long as DT doesn't use Dave Jerden, I'll
be happy.
>IMHO, he hits the note in IF with ease, and my girlfriend who studies

Oh no! The falsetto thread is not dead! Sig files are on standby...
>1. Create sound waves with an object (as designated by the laws of

"Rumble, Frenzy, Laserbeak, Ravage, eject...operation: warfare"
"Get ready to rock, get ready to tumble, you're gonna roll, cuz here
comes Rumble!" Piledrivers shake the earth in unison with Derek's TIE
Fighter/bull being violated/train noise.
>I'd quote the Art Manual, but unfortunately there is no Art Manual.
The Art Manual is always sold out at the university bookstore. Even used
ones are astronomically high.
>Aha. So I'd better throw away this here pick, since the first strung
>instruments were played with the bare fingers.
Don't throw away your picks, recycle them, or better yet, take them to
the Dr. Dre show in exchange for a concert ticket.
>While we are bashing David Prater, I discovered he produced Firehouse.
I always though Labrie sounded like the Firehouse guy at times. Not that
this is a bad thing, those damn Firehouse videos were on heavy rotation
not too long ago. One more thing, please don't confuse Firehouse with
Firehose (No one has yet). Two totally different bands.
>I am interested to know how old you are, because it seems that the
>"contest" you seem to be having with yourself to see how many times you
>can post is extremely immature.
Uh oh. The generation gap is finally starting to kick in. Masters
Laussade and Zero are on the front lines...Ytsejambassador Brian is
flying in from France...the "men" are ready to retaliate. Mutual assured
destruction is imminent. What happens next? Find out in Marvel Comics!
>MojoMan has spoken.
Nuff' said.
Finally, stop "picking on" Debbie. She provided her _opinion_, not fact, so
take it for what you will. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Respect those opinions, however much you disagree with them. I'd like to
end on a lighter note, B-flat, so Ytsejambassador Brian, if you only
remember one thing in France: please don't put any antifreeze in the wine!

Agree (1) but you needed to add (3) leaping around on stage with
picks in ya mouth can be hazardous, I almost choked one down about 2
years ago. A friend of mine has a miny pick rack on his bass and
loads it with about 8 picks. You just chuck em away when you need to
switch and grab one when ya need one, and reload the rack every
couple of songs.

Hi! This is actually important only to a few people, so I'll try
and add some news that everyone might care about, just after it.
If your name is one of these, PLEASE e-mail me ASAP. Your
Antiquities CD is on the way... or I should say it WOULD BE on the way,
if I hadn't accidentally saved your addresses to /dev/null. I need to get
'em again so I can send. The durn packet's already sealed and everything,
and the front label is sort of lonely for some ink. :)
Jeff Chew - James Phillips - John Arch - Skadz -
Paul Cashman - John Kotzian - Wilco Barg - Patricia McLoughlin
Tymoteusz Altman - Trey Allen
I _had_ all your addresses saved before, but when my drive took a
shit on me last week, they went right along with it. This time I'm
putting them on paper. :)
I have the first... get this... 180 CDs packed as of this very
first night of shipping. The first dozen or so packs are already sent. I
will be putting the rest into the already-overcrowded mail system with
all possible speed, as the week goes on. This is Antiquities by the way.
Oh yes, the second shipment (#501-1000) of WDATU should be here
next Wednesday. Looks like they finally got their damned ass in gear over
at the printshop.
OK, I've received numerous requests from people asking if they
can, as dealers, purchase quantities of my CDs for resale. Now, I'm a
believer in capitalism. However I don't want to neglect the people who
put me in the position I'm in, so whatever I decide, it will be something
that will not take CDs away from Jammers who want them. Everything I do
and create gets offered here first before anyone else gets a shot at it.
With that said, I am thinking of setting up some case assortments (a la
standardized shipping channels) and making them available at a discount
to dealers, due to the money saved on packaging and postage (not due to
the quantity bought.) It costs me the same to manufacture the Cds whether
you buy one or twenty. BUT It costs me less to send a box with 20 discs
in it than it costs me to send 20 packets with 1 CD apiece in them. If
you'd like to arrange for a case of Mike Bahr CDs at a dealer discount,
please e-mail me and we'll work it out. At this time, I can provide case
assortments with WDATU, Antiquities, and possibly some Cygnus, without
depriving any Jammers of the ability to priority-order CDs. :) That case
assortment will change as new CDs come out... at the rate Antiquities is
selling, it will likely be replaced in the case assortment by Scenes From
A Memory, though an assortment might sneak through with both, right
around the time that Scenes is finished. As always, I'm willing to listen
to any ideas people have, especially if they're better than mine. :)
By the way, now that Antiquities is shipping, the following
people can expect to get large shipments as requested to distribute in
their home countries:
- Stephane Auzilleau (probably be sent next week)
- Timo Haanpaa (new AQ and WDATU shipments due out tomorrow)
- Kris Claerhout (WDATU shipment due out next week)
This list is small but I'm willing to get other people involved.
If you'd like to get my CDs distributed in your home country, please
e-mail me at any time.
Take care everyone!!
