Well, I see I got some of you to use your brains for a change. Some didn't
    like doing that, I see.

First I'd like to address the music reading thing - no, you're not a
musician if you can't read music or don't know any theory. Then you are
one who plays a musical instrument. If you're content with that, so be it.

Marc - I would like to know why you feel learning more than one instrument
takes away from your skill at your usual weapon of choice. I personally
would rather have working knowledge of several instruments than be a
virtuoso on only one. Don't you think learning several instruments would
enhance one's musicianship and compositional skills?

Bafu, Bafu, Bafu, where do I start? I can't believe you had so much to
say. I personally believe that we'd still be in the times of Gregorian
chant (ugh) and simple polyphonic music if it wasn't for those of us who
actually read. Obviously you don't have a problem with church and state
being one. The church controlling music almost destroyed Western Art
Music as we know it. And what's wrong with knowing music history, even to
the beginnings of jazz? Can knowledge of music really do harm? Of course
not, but obviously you don't want to be a very well-rounded person.

And don't get the impression that I'm a rich bitch just because I'm a
college student. Dignified White Trash, I like to call myself. You people
don't know how I grew up. You don't know my bank account balance. Did you
ever hear of student loans, grants, and work study? They help the lower
middle class like me get a fucking education. Comprenden?

    That is all.

      Wagers anyone?

    Will I:

    a) get no response at all?

Interestingly, I can still read music, though I don't play any
instruments these days (used to play baritone, and then slide
trombone). Sometimes, I'll watch my friend's [7 yrs. old] daughter
play the piano and, following along reading the music, I'll tell her
she's playing it wrong. Then she gets pissed off at me, and I'll
hum what it should be. Of course, being 7, she still doesn't believe
    me !>)>

    I agree with some points:

HAVE THE DRIVE: Yep, yer not a musician unless you have a cool car.

LEARN THE LANGUAGE: "I iz a myoozeeshun!" -- yer never gonna get any cute
girls (or guys, depending on your gender/preference) if you speak like this. :)

    But seriously ...

I agree with Deb. I think that the non-scholars on this list, not being
scholars, have grossly misinterpreted her post. I have to go, so I can't
elaborate right now (There's not enough room in this margin for a fill
proof) but one point I want to address. Bafu said that when he creates he
hopes to "forget" any learning and just be. I say no. The ideal is to have
the technique down so well that you don't need to think about it. You
_transcend_ (not forget) about technique when you are a good player. And a
last word. No one who has _ever_ studued music has _ever_ said that it hurt
their ability to be a musician. At least, as far as I know.

12 posts in a jam is entirely fucking ridiculous!! I know you're proud
that you post all the time, but when your posts are only put up seconds
apart from eachother, it is a little extreme! I am interested to know
how old you are, because it seems that the "contest" you seem to be
having with yourself to see how many times you can post is extremely
immature. If you think your posts are interesting enough to have 12 in
one jam, you are fooling yourself, because you like your posts a lot
better than I do. You are making yourself look foolish, so have a little
    self respect. Be seeing you.....

Dude, you should check out Steve DiGiorgio's jazz band, Dark Hall. It
has the ex-guitarist from Autopsy, a flutist, and some other cool
instrument, I can't remember. Write to Steve and ask him about it. He's

That 9-11-9 right-handed part really looks like what Myung does whenever
I've seen him do this, so I'd have to vote for this tab for whomever's is
more correct. I'm just going by what I hear, and I don't hear that 11 in
there. I only hear two octaves. But watching my hands instantly reminded
me of the live Myung every time he rips this part, whereas the tab I wrote
out didn't involve the right hand going as high up the neck as Myung
always does. My tab also didn't have that flutter-tap shown here that I
always see Myung's right hand oddly jumping around on.

    > If they ever release the Myung instructional video here in the
    > States, then we'll all have the tab _and_ the video demonstration of

So then this tab is from Myung himself? Can't argue with that...

#1) A Record Producer has NOTHING to do with the photo style of
a band or an artist's released work. A Producer's job is to
guide the band musically, create a strong finished recorded
with the tape the engineer has recorded. Don't start blaming
Blaming David Prater for the hair on I&W.

#2) What still kicks me in the ass is the FACT that almost all of
you on this list became Dream Theater fans AFTER I&W was
released (Including myself). (**I dont wanna hear the 5% that
were fans during WDADU, you are a minority...including you
Gandalf**) I'm not asking you to not hate David Prater or
like him. The fact remains that David Prater is an industry
that has a great deal of good and bad recordings under his
belt. Just simply respect the work he's trying to get
across...Remember, almost all of you enjoy I&W, so Prater did
               something right...

#3) How can you judge a producer based on the reputations of his
clients. The lawyer that defends a murderer may not be a bad
lawyer, in fact he may be an excellent one. Just because his
client is undesireable, that doesn't invalidate his work.

Unfortunately, time and time again it seems like way to many
people are jumping before thinking on the Jam. Don't bash someone
without thinking out the reason why....not because it's hip to say
"David Prater sucks because he did Firehouse!"

    MojoMan has spoken.

Ooh. I just *have to* add my $0.02 to this one...

Well, most of that $0.02 was already posted here several jams ago (earlier
today) by a certain Ms. Debbie Seeger (herein referred to as DJS). But
I've got a little more to say, so :P.

I agree with her inasmuch as one should strive to learn everything you
can about that which you love, whatever it is. It's ironic how DJS
has become flame bait for some people, while someone who gets up
on a soapbox and says that an engineer should learn whatever he/she can
about engineering isn't going to be shot down at all.

I *think* part of what DJS was saying was that if you choose to pursue
music as a career, it is no different than any other professional pursuit.
You need to know your shit, regardless of what field you go into.

Yeah yeah.. I know. "But doesn't that stifle your creativity?" Of
course not! Any of you aspiring authors out there... wouldn't you agree
that your writing got better as your vocabulary grew?

One last thing. When I was a little kid, when multi-syllabic words were
still a problem, I used to get the words "musician" and "magician" mixed up.
Now I'm thinking, "gee, maybe I wasn't confused."

Bafu, Bafu, Bafu... you got it all wrong... when people learn theory and say
things like, I'm gonna play a flat 9th over the phrygian-diminished scale of
D, they're not thinking in terms of rules and books... it's just that
they're familiar w/ the sounds in they're heads... they know how all those
weird chords sound and what effect they'll have on the music... so basically
the 'follow you're ear' principle is still there, just that they have a
wider knowledge, and know all the names....

About the Metropolis Part1 bass part... of all the descriptions of it I've
seen, none has been similiar to how my bass player does it... he does a
weird cross tapping thing(i.e. his right hand is tapping in the lower frets
and the left on the higher ones)... anybody think this could be write? I can
ask him to transcribe it for me to see what you bass players think...

This has to be new record, 8 jams in a 24 hour period. Jeez,
don't you guys and girls work or go to school or do anything except
look at you computers all day?
Kenny Myung is supposed to let me know whom the producer will be
on the next album by Friday. I'll post as soon as I hear it from him.
( DTC )Peter Collins is doing the Rush album period !!! That is why
it's not out yet. They had to wait for him.

OK I propose that we firebomb the email address of the next person who
sends a "get rich quick scheme to the list. It's very simple if enough
of us send enough mail the server he/she is on will close the account or
just won't accept anymore messages until all the flames are cleared out.
then you do it all over again just to harass them.

Any Jammers going to the show this friday night at the Troubador? They should
blow that tiny little club apart.
I'll be wearing my Ytsejammer shirt if it gets here in time (Trey, has it been
sent?). If not, look for a group of six people suckin' down the Heinekens!
What a way to spend good friday.
