    >Marc - I would like to know why you feel learning more than one instrument
    >takes away from your skill at your usual weapon of choice.

I thought I explained that. Clearly, when you're practicing piano, you
cannot be practicing bass which means that part of your practice time on
bass has been given up for piano which does not improve your bass playing
although it may have an effect on your overall musicianship. It's not so
much that it takes away from your primary instrument, rather that it
doesn't give anything to it. If you have 3 hours to practice and you
split the time between two instruments, you won't make the same progress
on the two that you would if the whole time was spent on one.

    > I personally would rather have working knowledge of several
    > instruments than be a virtuoso on only one.

That's a wierd statement. Why? You, obviously, are not a performer. Being
mediocre on a number of instruments doesn't get you far.

    > Don't you think learning several instruments would
    > enhance one's musicianship and compositional skills?

Sure. But not to the point that it's so important to do that you take
time from your primary instrument. Like I said, a chordal instrument is
good to learn if you can so you can understand harmony better. Chords on
sax don't come out well :).

    > And what's wrong with knowing music history, even to the
    > beginnings of jazz? Can knowledge of music really do harm?
    > Of course not, but obviously you don't want to be a very
    > well-rounded person.

There is nothing _wrong_ with knowing music history. No amount of
knowledge is ever going to be bad. But, Deb, you made it a _requirement_!
Well rounded, well shmounded. There is no knowledge of music history
requirement to be a musician. But it sure can't hurt and will probably
help, especially if you are composing.

Just my $0.02 (<-- ripped off from someone else...sorry)

OK, as everyone knows, music is something that affects the very soul, it
is something that concatenates with our emotions, even our physical
being, and takes us somewhere spiritually. Anyone who can create sound
to achive this effect is, in my book, a musician.

MUSIC IS A PERSONAL THING, AND THUS, THE DEFINITION OF A MUSICIAN IS ALSO
    A PERSONAL THING

Music is an art (like painting, writing, computer programming) and can be
studied, but not readily defined. The same goes for the musician.

One more thing, although the use and knowledge of notes is a refined and
age old tradition, it is SOOOOO European!!! I can't stand people with
this damn uppidy western-euro mindset on things! You think the native
americans gave a shit as to what a half-note looks like, or where on the
scale there notes were NO! They created music, and thats all that matters!

All right, here's a few candid opinions (as Calvin put it). First,
about the "What is a Musician?" thread. Those were all good points, but
none of them are required to be a true musician. They do, however, help a
great deal. Next, thanks for the transcription for Metropolis. If anyone
finds an "official" version, please post it. As for our friend Peter
Collins, I'm sure he'll do an excellent job on the DT album. I've enjoyed
    all his work with Rush.
Here's a question: if Metropolis is part one, what is part two? If
there isn't one, does anyone know if more parts will be on upcoming
releases. I love musical trilogies. Rush did a bunch of them. Does anyone
know how many trilogies they did and what songs they include?
A friend of mine was telling me about some legal trouble Ibanez got
into for building 7-string guitars. Who else was building tham, and how
many models of them did Ibanez sell?
Finally, about learning several instruments. This does not always
improve playing of your main instrument, but it does allow you to have a
broader view of music. I play electric and upright bass right now, but I
used to play piano, violin, and cello and I'm trying to learn trombone.
There are problems with learning several instruments, though. My uncle, a
(French) horn player says that the number one way to ruin a horn embouchure
is learning to play trumbet. Learn new instruments, but don't ruin your
    skills on your main instrument.
I think that's all. Has anyone noticed a sudden increase in the
number of jams we've been getting? It's hard enough to keep up as it is.
                                                                       Feyd

"Maybe I'm just Cassandra fleeting, twentieth century icon bleeding..."
BTW, anyone know DT's position on religion? Not that it matters, but A Mind
Beside Itself and aCoS seem very critical of organized religion. I don't
know about you guys but I am.

Yeah. A friend of mine once told me that while driving to a dinner with the
president, he came upon Jennifer Aniston standing on the side of the road
hitchhiking. He picked her up, and right as she got in the car, aliens
destroyed the whole human population.....except for him and Ms. Aniston.
Jennifer suggested that they start reproducing right away so that they could
get the world back to normal as quickly as possible. They lived sexually
    ever after.

That just goes to show you that (ballsandchunkballsandchunk) either friends
don't always tell the truth, or that they're incredibly lucky.

    >musician if you can't read music or don't know any theory.

False or not, that sounds like a fact to me. And, you are not giving the
definition of a musician! That is the definition of a GOOD musician! Oookaay?

    >Swarup Bandyopadhyay

Just out of curiosity....what culture/nationality/country/you know what I
mean does this name come from? It carries striking similarities to Partha's
name, so I assume that they come from the same "you know what I mean". Don't
    mean to intrude, just interested.

    >James is in his "Head Voice" when he's singing all those high notes.

Waaaait...you can TELL when someone's using falsetto. James only uses
falsetto in one spot on Awake. The first chorus in (BEN) LSoaD, the word
"dream" is in falsetto. That spot in Innocence Faded is not. Just so you
know, I can sing the entire national anthem in my falsetto. Of course, all
the windows break, but that's not the point....

Okay. I is going to leave away now, because I learning the language so I
    could be a well musician.

from what i heard he liked the first few seconds, 'til the keyboards
came in... he bitched about that a bit and then said he doesnt like
    LaBrie's vocals either.

on one more note i've got a thing w/ Yngwie reviewing bands, this was
at the time of I&W, and he actually liked them. His only complaint was
the drumming, maybe it was those drum triggers...

i think it is more satisfying to really read it, i've been working on

but tab is also nice to know exactly what fingerings to use where on
the fretboard, for when you get up into those 90 mph solos i dunno bout
you but i dont have the notes of the board in my head THAT well, and
instead of working through everything slow at first you can build right
up and see it all, and also for those interested in playing for fun and
learning quick, its a big help.

I agree with Marc here. While being proficient with several musical instruments is a noble goal, I think that being a virtuoso on several is impossible. The time and effort required to maintain that level of proficiency precludes you from doing it on more than one.

For example: Eddie Van Halen also plays piano. Now, nobody is going to call him a keyboard virtuoso, but he could do it. The problem is that in order for that to happen, his guitar playing will suffer.

If you want to be good, play as many instruments as you want. If you want to be GREAT, pick one and stick with it.

Call me wacky, but knowing the names for what your doing does not improve your functional knowledge of music. I could memorize every word in the dictionary, and it still wouldn't make me speak any better.

    Hey all....

    Let's see.....

Pyramid Schemes. Blah, garbage. When I find some time I will try to get the list to only accept emails from subscribers. We tried to do this originally, but it didn't work right, so if I find some time (hahahah... that's a funny one) I will look in to it.

Metropolis. Ken is a busy man. Subscribers to the new release mailing list have gotten 2 lists in like the last 2 months, so be patient, let Ken catch up on his life, and we will start getting some Metropli.

Emailing me. I'm a busy guy too. Basically have spent the day trying to clean out my mailbox, so if you have sent me any mail, you should get a reply soon. If you send me mail in the future, it may take a few days for me to get back to you, but I will, promise.

My busyness. Well, basically, I am working two jobs now, so I have about zero free time these days. I am also on about 20 mailing lists, some of which send out 200+ emails daily, so my mailbox keeps me pretty busy too.

Bafu is nuts. End of story :) How does he do that end of jam thing????

Being a musician. IMHO, it takes two things, heart and time. You need to really love it and enjoy it. But you also need the time to practice :) I love music in general, own two guitars and never have a fuckin chance to play them, so I can't get any better. :(

DTC - good to see lots of it lately :)

RunDMC, Anthrax and Nirvana on the DT list in one week? AHHHHHH :) Made me go listen to some Anthrax though :)

    Thank yous.... Go out to:

Tim Lodge: Thanks for the CDs! They rock Jason Giles: The T shirt. As awesome as the last one I messed up :) Pellazzzzzz: Bonedance... One word: RAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Xwindows: AHHHHHHH. Xwindows and DOS/M$Winblowz don't belong in the same sentence together. Xwin was first and is much mcuh much better. You just have to know Unix to play with it :)

Hola mi amigos, I can now give my review of Superior. I've had it for about 3 weeks now. This CD ROCKS!!! I can't express how imperative that all of you have this for your collection. Production is some of the best I've ever heard. The songwriting ranks right up there with DT although they don't sound like them. They also have thought producing lyric. This is a very heavy CD, in the vein of AWAKE and heavier than FW. I Like the heavier edge which is why AWAKE is my favorite DT CD. Favorites on this are Escape from Reality, 911, and Why. Please do yourselves a favor and tell Jason Skewes you want this. Everyone that I've played this for loves it immediately, even the non DT fans <sacrilege). Jason, I'm working on a large order. I understand Bernd ships in lots of 10-perfect. I'll let you know if it pulls off. These guys SHOULD WARM UP FOR DT!!! They're definitely worthy. <visions of Garth and Wayne bowing down>. In conclusion, GET THIS!! You won't be sorry.

If the potential buyer doesn't know who Steve Vai is, he will probably pay less than you paid for it, and think that Steve's autograph is an ink stain/splotch. If the potential buyer is a Steve Vai aficionado, then you may get more, but I can't quantify how much.

Let us not forget about Broon's work with the Status Seeker and Afterlife remixes that he did - much better than the originals (production-wise) and also his work on Fates' Parallels CD. However, my choice would still be for Peter Collins - I think he'd push DT more than Broon would - just as he did with Rush.
