They are an incredible band, Chris Buzby of echolyn got me listening to
them. A great meld of many musical styles from rock, jazz, metal,
country, they are also very silly lyrically, it enables them to jam more
easily during songs. Live they are phenominal, I saw them last October,
though I really don't think the majority of Dream Theater fans would be
into Phish. If you are going to try them get "A Live One", a live album
full of brilliant improvisations, a jazz man's dream.

They are pretty much hit or miss. Estadium Nacional, Breaking These
Circles are really great songs. Friends of America is easily their worst
song, I skip it every time it comes up on the CD player, what is it
about, NATO? The Olympics? Please, I have nothing against historical
lyrics, but some topics just don't work really well. Iron Maiden really
wasn't writing historical lyrics, they were quoting famous authors, which
is something altogether different.

Wow! Grease is still around. He used to be on at night here on
KOME 98.5 in San Jose. He was based here as well (I talked to the
DJ that produced his show). I think they ousted him because of poor
ratings. KOME was a pretty messed up station prior to, and for a long
time after, their format change to alternative. Grease never used
to play music though.

Sorry If this has already been posted by anyone but I have a mailbox full
of unread jams.
Have any of you keyboard players seen the new PRO-VIEW magazine? This is a
publication printed by KORG which is basically one big advertisement for
their synths. I work in a music store that handles a lot of KORG equipment
and I happend to be bored the other day so I picked one up. What did I
see but a two page interview with Derek. The new poster boy for the
Trinity and Prophecy (new KORG keyboards). In the interview he discusses
many things from playing with Petrucci, to the new album and even mentions
that when he joined the band he read on the internet that people said he
couldn't fill Kevin's shoes.
I have a box of these things at work so if anyone is interested I would
mail you copies if you pay the postage. Let me know if any of you are
interested.

Maiden didn't get slagged at all, at least to my knowledge for
using the Mariner poem, I think the main reason for that is
because of the fact that, what you see as lyrics, is the actual
poem, no word changes, it's the real thing. Aparently, there's a
few version of the poem out in the world. I've seen a copy that
is like 10 pages, of course it has reference and footnotes
etc...but still, thats damn long.
If your ever in need of a resource of this poem, the maiden song
is a great place to start and for ONCE, you can get away with
listening to music while doing your homework :)
One of my old HS english teachers is a professor and he read it
and was quite impressed that maiden was able to do something new
with it.
Anyhow..."and look at what's happenin in this day in the fuckin

Have you no faith, Master Zero? Well, I decided to peruse the 1995-96
Guitar & Bass Buyer's Guide, and this is what I came up with:
-There were only two companies that had guitars with more than 6 or 12
strings. They were Conklin and Stick Enterprises.
-Conklin guitars are made in the U.S., and they custom build
6-,7-,10-,12,and 14-string guitars and doubleneck guitars. Their
Sidewinder 8-string guitar is $2300 and up. Available options include
various woods, colors, graphics, inlays, scale length, and electronics.
-The Stick is made in the U.S. It is also known as the Chapman Stick
Touchboard, and it comes in two models: the 10-string Standard and the
12-string Grand. Standard tuning consists of five bass strings in fifths
and five melody strings in fourths. It has 25 frets, and custom tunings
are an option. It lists for $1332.
The Ibanez Universe was not even listed. I also checked Hamer's
listings, and no 7-string guitars were there, either.
I also received Hamer's latest publication, "Hamer Tone", and there
wasn't really anything new in it. To cover all the bases (basses?) I
checked the Hamer World Wide Web page, and no mention there, either.

Well, I go to school at UVM, where they got their start. They're on the
radio a lot up here. I don't own any of their stuff, so I'm going by
what I have heard on the radio. I like it. Prog? Could be, musically,
with all the time changes and stuff. Lyrically, though, I'm not sure.
They definitely fit the bill in the weird category, though. But I LOVE
their harmonies. (If only DT and Rush had harmonies...)
I think the one thing that's going to hold them back (or, at least, keep
them where they are) is that so many people perceive them as The Next
Dead. It's not really a fair comparison, and from what I've heard, one
that the band isn't too happy about. Then again, it hasn't hurt their
ticket sales any.

Hamer has been making guitars & basses since at least 1977 - I should know, I'm ANCIENT! I remember the first poster I saw of their Explorer copy (except it was bookmatched flame maple a la '59 Les Paul) - the poster featured a hat-less, balding Rick Neilsen (Cheap Trick) doing a Pete Townshend jump in a red jumpsuit. (This was before CT hit it big).
