I have a question for any studio experts in the jam... what are those things
that are by each member of DT in the Awake studio picture... there sort of
on a standed, and slanted a little, and in the back the have a bunch of
cables plugged in... are they monitors or something?
Besides that, I was wondering if somebody could clear up something I've
always been wanting to know... what exactly is a click track? I know it's
what they use to guide the musicians while they record there seperate parts,
but how is it made? do they all play together being guided by click? or is
it just a click? I think it's the first one, because that's what you here in
LiT when they show 'em laying down the track..
anyways, these are things I've figureed out on my own, and I just wanted to
see if I was right...
also, would that be them recording the click track in the Awake picture? and
woluld those slanted boxes have anything to do w/ it? maybe their 'click
generators' or whatever....
Hey everybody... let's play a new game! let's play the
'guess-what-they're-playing-in-the-Awake-picture' game... any guesses?

aha. I understand. It all comes clear to my poor eyes. Well, thanks for
enlightening me and I am sure you have enlightened other jammers as well.
And to all you guys who are impersonating DT for a laugh, you are going to
make us all so paranoid that if we ever do run into the guys on IRC or
something, we are going to grill them and speculate as to whether it really
was DT or not, and this is only detrimental to your relationship with the
guys. So, although it may be cute and funny, I am extending a plea. Please
stop the DT impersonations. After a while, it really does begin to suck and
if DT ever sends a post to the ytsejam, we are going to have six digests with
the subject of whether or not it is legit. I hope you all understand my
point. I want to be able to see Derek's name, or MP/JP's name and say, "Hey,
we're in the midst of the all knowing." I don't want to think about whether
or not I am being duped by some ass who is trying to be cute. We already went
through this on IRC with Labrie. I wasn't there, but some say Labrie really
stopped by IRC and some say he was a fake. We can't probe or disprove
anything, because it's so easy to impersonate people on the Net. So, please
stop. Or I will have to come over to your place and beat you seneseless with
my cane.

I am writing because I know my posts are many and lacking in true DT content.
I seem to be getting into Bafuvai territory with my sarcasm and attempt at
comedy, probably because I have always had this desire to be popular, and I
guess I never quite accomplished that. So, I figured well if Bafu can get
away with being really funny and sarcastic, two of my good traits, I think, I
could try my hand at it. While I haven't gotten flamed, I mustsay that I
haven't been acclaimed, either. So, I will probably just lay off for a while.
I am guilty of cluttering up the jams with useless banter, and I am partly to
blame for the mulitple jams each day. Every post counts, though. Oh well,
maybe my humor is humor that only I can appreciate. maybe my constant jokes
about my own handicap freak people out more than make them laugh. Who knows.
And truthfully, does anybody really care anyway?
thanks to the guy who posted about progressive rock night every first of the
month at the Rock and Roll cafe. I appreciated that post. And whoever goes to
see Power Windows, I am extremely jealous of you. If you have the
opportunity, please please go see them. They kick serious ass. Could somebody
let me know when they are coming to Jersey again.
DT content? HMMM. nah, this is Damon you are talking to. I have nothing
intelligent to say. I am here wasting bandwidth.

All right. Some actual DT content from me for once.
While I never saw the pictures, those thing you refer to could be monitors.
They could als be direct boxes, which is like an input into the mixer for
microphones and instruments. I'm more inclined to say studio monitors.
Click track is basically the metronome, or a way for a drummer to keep a
steady beat. Usually they are just a click, generated by a recoreding
machine, but I have heard of other sounds that replace the click, probably
triggered by MIDI like drums ounds or notes. Neil Peart once said that he
uses a bass drum sound as a click. As I said, usually the drummer uses the
click track to keep a steady beat, since you always lay down drums first.
Then the rest of the band plays to the steady drums. While clicks are good
for some things, they tend to make the music sound inhuman if the driummer is
too exact, although I happen to like a drummer that can stay at a steady beat
and not speed up and slow down. That more than anything is a sign of a good
drummer, if he or she can keep a good steady tempo. But, I digress. We now
return you to your regularily scheduled non-dreamtheater content jam.

Well, DJ DMF, if you've actually read some 'Jams lately, instead of trying
to outdo DreamNDay, you'd notice that a certain Oregonian and myself have
not flamed each other on the 'Jam since Warren's response and my rebuttal.
There have been more posts by third parties then ourselves. So, be careful

Well, everyone else is prolly behind on Janms, so lemme rehash some old threads:
Musician: Okay, one ingredient answer. To be a musician you must strive to be the best that you can on your chosen instrument(s)
Yes, this means that anyone with the attitude of "Well, I'll never play like (insert virtuoso here) so I'll just sing about free peaches" is _NOT_ a musician. I happen to think that being the best requires having the most knowledge you can, and that anyone who feels that formal theory, reading music, etc. is not important is seriously selling themselves short. A Native American, who studies his "theory" from tribal rituals, etc. is a musician, because the society and the music do not fit into the western theory. But, if he/she just picked up a drum and played, I doubt that the tribe would look upon that person as a "musician", just as a person with a bow is not a hunter, nor is someone who knows how to pick berries a cook.
Nor do I feel that someone who buys a set of drums and sits on a street corner banging away, begging for spare change a musician. You must always be learning. , always increasing your knowledge of the instrument, beyond simply playing. The moment you say "I know enough, let's just play for the rest of my life" you cease to be a true musician.
And, if that isn't enough, I feel that this applies not just to musicians, but to any profession/art/whatever.
Now, um (obMoo) what else was I gonna talk bout?
WHo knows. I gotta get sleep. In the infamous and ever wise of Arnold "The Terminator" Schwarzennager (however you spell it)

I don't like to flame in vain..:) > Art is very difficult to define, but I don't think that something beautiful, elaborated, original, intelligent, must be necessarily defined art. An artist, to produce a work of art, must have a great knowledge of art history, and must be able to understand and reproduce the art of the past. Then he can move one step forward, being original but at the same time bearing in mind the rules of what he's doing, maybe partially breaking some of them.
In this way music has moved from Greece to Rome to Gregorian rules to mottetto to Bach to Beethoven to Chopin to Debussy and so on.
For example, Picasso painted Guernica after learning how to paint in the previous "normal" style. Byron had in mind the previous literary experiences while writing his works. I believe in artistic genius, but it must develop on previous experiences. Hope I explained myself.
The point is, I think rock music partially had classical music as an influence, but I refuse to call it art. It's a popular form of music that is done for easy pleasure, not as an artistic purpouse. Progressive rock originates from rock. Of course, it is much more closer to art then others genres. But it belongs to another field, and it is completely separated from modern classical music.
But don't get me wrong: it's just a matter of definition. I don't listen to modern classical music, while I love DT. I also listen to easier music, for example Pearl Jam, because I like it. But they aren't art. You could say prog rock is an attempt to conciliate different music styles and classical music. I would agree.
But of course, this is only my opinion: I could be wrong.

Hi all
well yesterday I went out and listened to (and bought) Damnation Game by Symphony X. Great music, lots of interesting breaks/changes etc. but the lyrics are really grim and the vocalist sounds like Charlie D. with laryngitis - it nearly put me off buying the album. So, does anybody know of any prog bands that only play instrumentals? Almost all prog bands that I have heard write lyrics that are reminiscent of the pubescent outpourings of some teenager who has just been dumped by his first girl (OK, there are some exceptions to this sweeping generalization), or they attempt to paraphrase the works of Hermann Hesse, added to which, a lot of the vocalists try and outdo or at least keep up with the guys (and gals) who play the instruments, and the results are, to my ears, sometimes pretty bad. One obvious exception as far as the lyrics are concerned is Jon Anderson, who used to write complete nonsense (ever read the lyrics to Topo- graphic Oceans?): I'm convinced he used to put words together just for the sound they made, and not for the meaning.
This is not intentional flame bait (although I expect to smell the delicate aroma of singed butt-cheek hair quite soon) but a real question: does anybody know of such a band? I would be more than interested.
Any Pantera fans out there? I hear that the new album is due to be released (here in Germany anyway) at the end of May. Write it in your diary and lock up your grandmother. There should also be a new album by the great German band Blind Guardian at the same time, so start saving your Pfennigs now.
Damn BSE: I can't have my traditional Good Friday meal of a large rare steak any more. Is it just me, or is Good Friday possibly the most boring day in the whole year? Oh well, don't eat too many Easter eggs.

What a pile of bullshit. I used to think the people here had taste in music (maybe they really did and there's just a lot of newbies on the list), and that the reason we liked Dream Theater was that the music can be considered "metal", but is extremely progressive and isn't at all like your typical metal band.
Now all of a sudden people on this list are talking about death metal (please!), Korn (my brother has their CD - you call this MUSIC?!? TALENTED?!?!? HAHAHAHAHAH! Excuse me, I just pissed myself...)
