Hey look! This dick-boy is from America Online.

Here's the letter that I wrote to AOL (I have an AOL account too)
    ------Begin
    Hi,

I have an internet account and subscribe to a mailing list. A user whose
    screename is:

    JohnChen00

Has been spamming the list. When I tried to write him a polite email
asking him to stop, his screenname was invalid. The list gets a lot of
spam mail and I think that this user set up the above screen name,
spammed the internet (who knows how many other mailing lists he spammed)
    then canceled the name.

I would like to know if anything can or will be done about it?

    Thank you,
    Marc Respass
    -------End

I really did try to write him and I really was polite

I love the way that a quasi-intellectual debate about "What is a musician"
has deteriorated to the "sounds my ass makes" via the chair/table thing.
Keep it up gang! To the best of my knowledge a chair is something to put
your ass in perhaps to play an instrument and can sometimes be found in the
vicinity of a table. Oh yeah...IMHO.

If you stay away from Fates' early stuff, you'll just be missing out. John
does a terriffic job with Fates Warning, and really gives the earlier tunes
a great feel to them. His harmonies and melodies are such a compliment to
the music by the band. Definately check out Awaken the Guardian. You WILL
not be disappointed. I guarentee. I think if you were to compare Arch and
Alder, the race would be a tough one. Now that Fates music is calming down
somewhat, Ray fits in better than John would, but if Fates were still
writing the same type of material as back in the Spectre or Guardian days,
no one would be better than John was. So, that's that.

I've mentioned quite a few times that ytsejam should be set up to only
accept submissions from people on the list. I think Skadz mentioned that
he wil look into it when he has time. I sincerely hope he does have time
soon. I am getting tired of all this spamming.

I recently picked up Kansas's Leftoveture. This is a great progressive

    >I disagree. Real artists must have great knowledge, or they'll build castles in

Ah, but I argue that it is the artists who try to build the castles in
the air, that truly create something unique. Those who dare to do
something experimental or "ahead of their time", will starve because
of this evolutionary thinking, but will be labelled "visionaries"
after they are dead. So maybe it is better just to "go with the flow".
         <sarcasm fully intended> 8^)

    >Otherwise, I don't see why I'm studying Italian and English literature at
    >school or art history, for example...
Most of this is to lay a foundation from which to build upon. Where you go
from there is completely up to you. If you study Shakespeare and then go off
and write a work of your own, but just a notch different than that of old
Bill, you'll be perceived as a hack. But, if you study Bill and others of his
era, some modern writers, playwrights, musicians, Monty Python, etc... and
then use all of these influences to create something new and unique, you'll be
    judged as an original (hopefully)....

    >I agree with you, but I add one more thing that is the one that makes me be so
    >careful to define something art: the content must be original, but the form
    >is also very important.
Ah, but originality is another tough one to define. Some would argue that
only the first person to ever arrange music for an orchestra was original, all
the ones who followed were just milking a good idea.... 8^)

I guess the only conclusions that we can come to is that everybody has a
different idea about what art is, and leave it at that...

I am updating the FAQ currently. It is a little dated at this point, but
other than administrative things (mailing list, IRC), there isn't much new
to add. I am working on it. Look for it towards the middle to end of the

OK, question time. Think back to the 80s (Koba, that's before your crack
dependancy :). Remember the pop band Power Station? They had that
cheesy song "The Heat is On" or something. Anyway, I remember Robert
Palmer and Tony Levin being in that band, but who else???

BTW, Michael Jackson singing ACoS? They would have never gotten him into
the studio! He would still be on the beach talking to the little kid.

Know what the woman said to Michael Jackson at the beach?
"Would you mind getting out of my son?"

Has anyone noticed that the ACOS on AQ seems to be sped up? I haven't check

tempo is also faster (even faster than the live boot version from DOE).

btw, get AQ. Well worth it.

I would say that not only smoking crack, but doing Ice is another
    requirement for being a musician!

Now that the fight is dead and gone....I have to say that both
D-man and Gandalf came out with an even score. 2-2. game point 5.

When does Bafu Vai become his own damn persona qualifier. {Dear
Ladies, Gentelman and Bafu Vai's.} Bafu??? What makes you so damned
    weird!

Big Question...does anyone know the exact string of phrase's
said on the recorded version of ACOS...(The part just before James would
sing live, "Please Don't Go") The string ends with "she was killed"
    ..what is the whole thing?

Does anyone know of web pages for these bands? Damn Yankees,
    Night Ranger, Mr. Big

Whats this I hear about Tommy Shaw touring with Styx. Last I
heard he was going to tour to support his album with Jack Blades....but
I dont think that ever happened. I also know that he was taking a
break, along with the rest of the band, from Damn Yankees....now he's
back in Styx???? whats going on?

For those who are interested: Journey has reunited, and will
release a new album a little more than 2 months from now. The line-up
is the original Escape + Frontiers line-up. (Steve Perry, Steve Smith,
Ross Valory, Neal Schon, and Jonathan Cain)

    Hi
I just wanted to let everybody who e mailed me since last Friday
know that my e mail was out of order for the whole weekend (imagine my
shock when I tried to log in, only to find that I was completely cut off
from the world). Even worse, my car was in the shop, so I might as well
have been on a desert island.

But I just got my e mail AND my car back (hallelujia!), so it
looks like I'm back in business. Most of you guys probably don't care,
or even know who I am for that matter, but I wanted to let people like
Mike B. and Scott C. who might have tried to e mail me this weekend know
what happened. So try it again, guys.

I guess I don't have any DT content to post. Um, let's see. I
think that Dream Theater is a really good band, and I like them a lot.
    There.

Point of clarification: Glenn Frey (of the Eagles) sang "The Heat Is
On". Power Station had two hits: "Get It On (Bang A Gong)", and a song
entitled "Feel The Heat" or "Some Like It Hot", I think. Robert Palmer was
the lead singer, but the guitarist and bassist were from Duran Duran. I
don't know if Tony Levin was ever in an incarnation.

I just got back from a week-long vacation. I thought about
reading all the jams I missed, but then elected to just say "fuck it" and
deleted most of them. Here's what I think of the disc (sorry if I post
things which have already been mentioned):

    A Crack In The Mirror/Mirror/TTT
-Nothing I really haven't heard before. The "Crack" part of
"Mirror" is slightly extended than other versions I've heard. As far as
TTT goes, the jam at the end is the clearest recording of this I've heard
yet. Does anyone have a full copy of this show? It seems to be the Awake
equivilant to "Lost In The Sky" in terms of performance and sound quality.

    Under A Glas Moon
-Seems a bit slower during the instrumental break. Other than
    that, a nice take.

    ACOS
-Whoa!! Holy smokes! This is worth the price of the CD alone. All
those harmonies & stuff are really cool, though the released version is
still ny favorite to date. I agree. This is definitely the difinitive
    "old" version. Very cool.

    Don't Look Past Me
-HELLO!! I've never heard THIS before. Incredible. Cool, melodic,
everything I like about DT. I can see why this wouldn't have fit on I&W,
but maybe there's a chance of them recording a real version of this as a
b-side, like they did with TLF. You know that feeling you get when you
want to articulate something, but you've got so much running around in
your head you don't know where to start? That describes how I feel about
    this song.

    Metropolis
-And now for the other end of the spectrum. This blows big time.
Not that the music is bad (this is DT afterall). The liner notes say that
Steve Stones takes a Coverdale approach to the song. More like a shit
approach to the song. There is an interesting little "round" (I don't
know the musical terminology) happening during the "Swimming in a lake of
fire" line, but that can't save his pathetic delivery. With my luck, he's
a member of this list and I'll be awakened tomorrow morning by a
disgruntled frontman pounding on my bedroom door.

The Killing Hand & A Fortune In Lies
-Not bad. No offenese John, but The Killing Hand didn't really do
anything for me. You were MUCH better on a Fortune In Lies. Great job on
that one. Also, to Mike Bahr- what is that weired jump that happenes at 3:55?

Before people get TOO sick of the "what canstitutes a musical instrument" thread
(I'm beginning to get there, but it does make for some stimulating discussion), I just
wanted to say that I remember an episode of Beavis & Butthead where they were watching
some crap video and beavis said that if he could be an instrument, he'd be an M-80.
butthead then replied "An M-80's not an instrument" to which Beavis replied "Mrs. (I
forgot the name of the teacher mentioned) said that we can make anythign a musical
    instrument." Hmm...

I've been on the Ytsejam since november 24th '95.
To make reading the digests easier, I wrote a little program
that shows a 'Table of Contents' of a selected digest (I always
save the digests to a .txt file before I read them). I can then
select the message I want to read from this table of contents.

    ------------------------------

Yesterday I added a new option that let's you select a range of
digests and have the program count the amount of people that
posted to these digests and how many messages they sent.
    Here's the result of digests 1165 (nov 24th '95) through 1417:

    Amount of posters : 708
    Amount of messages : 4133

THE TOP 10 LIST OF MOST FREQUENT YTSEJAM POSTERS
    ------------------------------------------------
     1. DreamNDay@aol.com (176)
     2. RESPONSE at IBMMAIL (156)
     3. Steve Borzilleri <magellan@u.washington.edu> (78)
     4. Ben Laussade <laussade@enet.net> (68)
     5. "Damon M. Fibraio" <s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu> (65)
     6. WildKoba@aol.com (61)
     7. "Christopher R. Merlo" <cmerlo@emba.uvm.edu> (56)
     8. Pat Griffin <c675311@everest.cclabs.missouri.edu> (46)
     9. KTYA28B@prodigy.com (MS DEBBIE M VESTAL) (45)
    10. Michael Bahr <durnik@indirect.com> (44)

Wow, that was exciting ! "RESPONSE at IBMMAIL" nearly won the
race ! These people either have no life (like me) or really have
a lot of interresting things to share with us (you be the judge)

    Anyway, Congratulations DreamNDay!
    You've managed to send 176 messages in about 4 1/2 months !!!
Nice job !!! Notice the fact that DreamNDay posted 98 times more
than Steve, the nr. 3 poster. How about starting a DreamNDay
mailing list ? Maybe then we can go back to just 1 Ytsejam a day!
We wouldn't even need moderation for that. (just a thought)

BTW, the number 1 poster on the Freaks Mailing List (Marillion)
*only* sent 59 messages... But then again... They *only* get
1 (ONE) digest a day... Personally I'd rather get 5 Ytsejams
a day (spot the irony, or is it sarcasm?)

I hope I didn't offend you, DreamNDay, but 176 posts IS ridiculous
IMO it would have been funnier if "RESPONSE at IBMMAIL" had won...
    oh well...

If you guys are interrested in, let's say, a monthly top 10 of
'Most Frequent Posters', let me know!

    Sorry for the NDTC...

If anyone wants to reply, please do it to me personally...
Let's stop polluting the YtseJam... "Just say NO to NDTC"
BTW, I'm at the bottom of the list of "Most Frequent Posters".
Only 1 message... This is my second post to the Ytsejam !
