    Hi guys:

The other day I got a copy of the Awake In Japan video (thanks Brandon) and I had noticed that in the intro to the Mirror, they rip off an Anthrax song in the heavy syncopated intro leading into the Mirror. Anyone else notice this? The riff that they stole is from 1:27 of the song This Is Not An Exit from the Sound Of White Noise album. Don't get me wrong, I'm not calling DT a pack of theives, they only used the riff in concert as a lead-in, I just thought that it was interesting and wondered if anyone else had noticed this?

Just picked up the Ivanhoe CD Symbols of Time the other night and so far it's pretty good. I was a little disappointed when I first heard it because I had heard such rave reviews of this band that I was under the impression that they were the next DT or something. They are nowhere near as complex, but their songs are well written.

Finally, anyone out there with DT concerts on video interested in a trade, please email me. Thanks. Later.

    -Scott

    Greetings jammers,

I found this nice little article on rec.music.artists.queensryche and thought it a bit interesting and that maybe someone would want to comment on the content included... I did not write it, so don't go flaming me, and if you want to respond how about some thought out musings on it, not 'that guy sucks'...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ****Forwarded message**** From: bl003c@uhura.cc.rochester.edu (Ben Lauter) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

This whole issue seems to me to be a very important one. I really am someone who marvels at Dream Theater's technique, but at the same time feel they are as songwriters, a bunch of no-talent wankers. A lot of their songs are based on exercises in speedy chops and flashy licks. They know what to do musically on the fretboard, but in truth they lack the real songwriting skills that a band like Queensryche has. DT are more about playing solos than anything else, that's clear. This is why one cannot lump them in with Rush, Queensryche, etc. *none* of those bands spends half a song on a solo, none of them.

While I am not faulting them for being good musicians, I am faulting DT for not having the good sense to play with emotion in their music. It's very two-dimensional. It's like they took everything they learned on the classroom chalkboard and said, "we need to use every one of these scales in a song". Definitely an 80's style band, Dream Theater fans while may claim there is emotion in DT's music, are wrong. In truth, there is nothing heartfelt about long, self-indulgent solo passages. Unfortunately without the shredding, DT really have no band, because they cannot just write "songs" without soloing through them. It doesn't help that the bassist, keyboardist, and guitarist are all competing for who is the virtuouso of the band.

Stay away from cpmparing the band to Queensryche, as QR are much more imaginative than DT. DT could and will never come up with a brilliant concept like Operation MIndcrime. Simply put.

Ben --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***End forwarded message*** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now obviously I don't agree with the post... I think the writer probably hasn't given DT much of a chance. At first listen it would be very easy to classify DT as 'a bunch of no-talent wankers'. However, I'm sure that all of us after many listens have grown to love the intricacies in each DT song and find a bottomless well of emotion contained in each and every one... from Space Dye Vest to Pull Me Under to 6:00 to Another Day to ACOS.

Just wanted to share this with you guys and see if anyone had some intelligent comments to make about this guys opinion.

    Two things

    1) I'm interested in getting in on the DT IRC stuff...where's it at, and about what times is everyone there?

    2) I'm looking for some Queenryche boots from the last tour...preferably the Great Woods show from July, 95. Any of them will do though. If anyone has one, or anyone knows where to get a hold of one, let me know.

Hey there! I've been poking around the DT areas of the WWW lately, and discovered the #ytsejam IRC channel. I decided "what the hell!" and went on last night. Well, everyone there was really nice, and encouraged me to join this mailing list, so here I am.

I thought I'd say a little about me, just so anyone who cared could know. I'm a 6th semester (junior) at the University of Connecticut, majoring in Audio Engineering. My primary focus is live theater, but I've taken piles of classes in MIDI, and general sound stuff. Hard to give 3.5 years of classes in one post, so I won't. I've been a big fan of DT since 1992, when a friend of mine's cousin introduced us to IAW and his Japanese copy of WDADU. Or at least I think that's what it was. Anyhoo, I immediatey bought all of the DT stuff I could find, and I now have IAW, Awake, ACOS, Live at the Marquee, and the Silent Man single. I just today put in my money order for WDATU and AQ. From what I hear they'll be worth it.

I've been a musician (regardless of the current list discussion's opinion of what makes one) since 4th grade. I currently play the euphonium, trumpet, keys, and bass guitar (in that order). I'm in the UConn Marching Band, and I'm in the pep band for the UConn Men's Basketball team.

I guess that's probably more that anyone wanted to know about me at any one time, so I'll quit now, and get back to reading the digests.

    Bye!

Wow, that was exciting ! "RESPONSE at IBMMAIL" nearly won the race ! These people either have no life (like me) or really have a lot of interresting things to share with us (you be the judge)

Anyway, Congratulations DreamNDay! You've managed to send 176 messages in about 4 1/2 months !!! Nice job !!! Notice the fact that DreamNDay posted 98 times more than Steve, the nr. 3 poster. How about starting a DreamNDay mailing list ? Maybe then we can go back to just 1 Ytsejam a day! We wouldn't even need moderation for that. (just a thought) -----------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you think that's really fair singling out DreamNDay like that? Yes, he is the undisputed champ as far as total # of posts, but you're not looking at the complete picture. When DreamNDay posts they may be many, but they're usually pretty short. A lot of people may only post once on a jam, but it takes up half the jam! Plus, DreamNDay is out of the country at the moment, so I don't think it's fair to be picking on someone when they're not around to defend themselves. If you don't like the way the jam is, then why don't you unsubscribe. It's really not that difficult and that way you don't have to see all those posts by one person.

like i said, that is my roommate's take on it. it does sound like he does giggle (or something), but i would think that would throw him off, yet it doesn't slow him down. i watched LiT over the weekend and at the same part, there is a slight something present, but not quite as apparent as on AQ. so does anyone have any ideas?

I get my permit tomorrow at 8:30AM. Rock!

I just figured out the real reason that I love Dream Theater. The music is so soothing. Most harder music relaxes you for a little bit but then makes you angrier. DT lets you get your aggression out but doesn't take you to the terminally angry point.

What is the real reason we like DT.

I sent a check to the guy who was re-releasing Subconcious. I know that I have to wait 10 working days for the check to clear, but I am getting real anxious to hear it. If it's not in by next Friday I will have to kill some small furry animal. Save the furry animal, and send me Subconcious. (Don't kill yourself sending it, I'm just bored and rambling.)
